Ask any two music fans what qualifies as yacht rock, and an argument is sure to ensue.
Does Steely Dan count? (Absolutely.) What about Hall & Oates?
In the late 1970s and early ’80s, the term “yacht rock” was not yet a thing. But everyone knew the music of the Doobie Brothers, Toto and Christopher Cross — who swept the 1980 Grammys with his shimmering ballad “Sailing.”
Those acts topped the charts in an era when slick production, smooth melodies and expert chops ruled the radio waves alongside the country-tinged hits of the Eagles. That would all change when MTV crashed the scene. Suddenly the likes of “What a Fool Believes” and “Africa” were consigned to the uncool “soft rock” heap. After the rise of Madonna and Michael Jackson, some of the earlier wave of musicians moved on to soundtracks, like Kenny Loggins with the “Top Gun” hit “Danger Zone.”

Did Reese Witherspoon make $1 Billion from a media company? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Elle Woods wasn’t just conquering courtrooms—she was running a full-blown empire. In 2021, Reese’s five-year-old baby, Hello Sunshine, sold for a whopping $900 million. The buyers? Some big-money media firms backed by Blackstone weren’t messing around.
Hello, Sunshine wasn’t your typical Hollywood production house, either. Reese built it in 2016 with a badass mission: to spotlight stories by women, for women. And boy, did it deliver—think Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, Gone Girl, and Little Fires Everywhere. Oh, and did we mention Reese even had her talk show? Classic overachiever energy, and we’re here for it.
The sale didn’t just make headlines—it turned heads. Blackstone threw down over $500 million in cash to scoop up investor shares, valuing the whole thing at a cool $900 million. But here’s the twist: Reese and...

As music critic and writer Steve Huey once explained, “from 1976 to 1984, the radio airwaves were dominated by really smooth music.” Once known as soft rock, since the mid-2000s pretty much everyone has called it Yacht Rock.
We’re talking of course about the music of people like Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Steely Dan, Toto, Christopher Cross — pop songwriters at the intersection of soul, jazz and disco who were defiantly uncool for their day but are now recognized as the legends they are. And as an early Christmas president, HBO is giving people a crash course via “Yacht Rock: A Documentary,” which debuts Nov. 29.
Directed by Garret Price, the film features commentary from legends like McDonald, Loggins, Cross and more, plus some of the people they influenced — like Thundercat, Mac DeMarco and Questlove.

One cool feature that’s relatively unique to Amazon Prime Video is the streamer’s X-Ray feature, which pops up the name of an actor or the music you’re currently hearing or seeing on screen when you pause the show. No need to go to IMDb to figure out where you recognize that guy from or to Shazam that song — so long as you’re actually watching a show or movie on Amazon.
Now Amazon Prime Video is extending that X-Ray feature a step further by summarizing full episodes or even entire seasons of TV through the push of a button. The company is calling it “X-Ray Recaps,” and it’s available now in Beta version on Amazon MGM Originals and for Fire TV users specifically.

Amazon has turned to AI to create recaps for TV shows on Prime Video — starting with its own original series — in a way the company says won’t risk revealing spoilers.
On Monday, Amazon announced X-Ray Recaps on Prime Video, touting the generative-ai-based feature as “delivering a new way to get up to speed without wasting time or risking spoilers.” The system creates text of “brief, easy-to-digest summaries” of full seasons of TV shows, single episodes or specific segments of episodes “down to the exact minute of where you are watching,” the company said.
At launch, Prime Video viewers can use X-Ray Recaps for all Amazon MGM Studios original series including “The Boys” (pictured above), “Upload,” “Daisy Jones & the Six,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “The Wheel of Time.” X-Ray Recaps, currently in beta, is available now to users of Amazon’s Fire TV connected devices in the U.

Nepo baby Riley Keough, the late singer Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, has admitted that her familial ties to the singer have made her career easier as she opens up about her choice to enter the acting industry.
In a recent interview, Keough, 35, recognized that her nepotism has helped her make strides.
“I’m sure being Elvis’ granddaughter has made it easier for me to get an agent, to have meetings and all this stuff, when I started out,” Keough told Elle. “I know there’s so much nepo-baby stuff at the moment [and] I certainly acknowledge that aspect of the privilege of coming where I come from.”

Stevie Nicks wasn’t clamoring to watch Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & the Six, but after having viewed — and liked — the show (adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel and loosely based on her romance with fellow Fleetwood Mac bandmate Lindsey Buckingham), she has some ideas of her own to contribute for Season 2.
“I didn’t even want to see it, because I thought I was going to hate it so much,” the Grammy winner told Rolling Stone in a recent interview. “I had Covid when I saw it. I was in my condo in Los Angeles, and I can remember saying, ‘Am I just watching my life go by?'”
She continued, “Riley [Keough] doesn’t look like me. She’s much snappier than me. I couldn’t be as snappy as her in Fleetwood Mac. Christine [McVie] and I couldn’t do that, because we were the peacemakers. [Keough] could...

Last year, the Prime Video streaming service released the ten episode series Daisy Jones & The Six (watch it Here), based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid – a novel that was partially inspired by the complicated issues Fleetwood Mac band members Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks dealt with behind the scenes. It isn’t directly the Fleetwood Mac story, but comparisons are unavoidable… and Steve Nicks soon let it be known that she loved the show and had watched its full run multiple times. She said, “It brought back memories that made me feel like a ghost watching my own story. It was very emotional for me,” and she joined many fans in hoping that there would be a second season. Since Daisy Jones & The Six covered the full story of Reid’s novel and was categorized as a limited series,...

No, Stevie Nicks has not seen Stereophonic, David Adjmi’s hit Broadway play about a fictional (but very Mac-like) ’70s band recording what will become its (very Rumours-like) masterpiece album.
In fact, the singer who shared vocals (and decades of triumphs and tribulations) with her Fleetwood Mac bandmates Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie has never even heard of the Broadway smash.
In a new Rolling Stone interview promoting her latest song “The Lighthouse” (which she performed on Saturday Night Live earlier this month – just four blocks from the home of Stereophonic), Nicks was asked whether she had seen the play, which, among other storylines, chronicles the crumbling of a relationship between a Stevie-like singer and a Lindsey-like guitarist.
Here’s the exchange:
Rolling Stone: Have you seen the Stereophonic play?
Nicks: What is that?

Stevie Nicks has an idea for a second season of Daisy Jones & The Six.
In an in-depth interview with Rolling Stone published Thursday, the music icon reflected on the ending of the Prime series in which Sam Claflin’s Billy Dunne reunites with Riley Keough’s Daisy after encouragement from his wife to give his former bandmate a call after she passes away.
Though the series’ ending was left for the audience to debate on what truly happens and offered a feeling of possibility, Nicks ponders what could be if the show should ever have another season.

Two years ago, it was announced that Sam Claflin, who may be best known for playing Oswald Mosley on Peaky Blinders, Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games franchise, and Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones & the Six, had signed on to star in the supernatural thriller Bagman, from Hunger Games‘ home studio Lionsgate. The first season of A24 and Prime Video's smash-hit animated series "Hazbin Hotel" ended on February 2, 2024, and while the creative team is hard at work on season 2, the show's popularity hasn't decreased. "Hazbin Hotel" earned the largest global debut viewership for a new animated title on Prime Video, surpassing other hot commodities like "Invincible" and "The Boys Presents: Diabolical." The series doesn't boast the same recognizable IP as its contemporaries, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a phenomenon. In the months since the season's end, convention circuits have shown that "Hazbin Hotel" has become one of the most popular shows for cosplayers to emulate, fanart floods social media feeds on the daily, but thanks to the death of the monoculture, the popularity often feels like it exists in a vacuum.
I've previously described "Hazbin Hotel" as adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons.

In the series premiere of Disney+ and Marvel's latest project "Agatha All Along," Kathryn Hahn turns in a pitch-perfect performance as Detective Agnes O'Connor, with the entire episode mimicking the HBO hit "Mare of Easttown" before the "TV magic" is stripped away to reveal that Agnes is actually Agatha, a now-powerless witch. So, what popular series does the fourth episode, titled "If I Can't Reach You Let My Song Teach You," reference? A former sound engineer who coauthored a 2012 memoir about his days working on the Fleetwood Mac album Rumours has filed a lawsuit, along with his coauthor of the book Making Rumours, against the makers of Broadway’s smash hit play Stereophonic, alleging that playwright David Adjmi relied on portions of Making Rumours in the creation of the similarly themed Broadway play.
Stereophonic, the suit states, “copies the heart and soul of Making Rumours, and is substantially similar.”
Stereophonic is perhaps best described as a roman a clef of Fleetwood Mac and the mid-’70s making of what would be their 1977 masterpiece Rumours. The play, which does not use the band members’ names or songs, fashions its characters and situations in ways that align closely to Mac’s classic line-up of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. The troubled recording of their seminal album, which endured months of romantic break-ups,...

Reese Witherspoon is adding “published author” to her résumé.
Ben Sevier, president & publisher of Grand Central Publishing, announced Wednesday the acquisition of a new suspense novel by Witherspoon and best-selling author and TV creator Harlan Coben.
The novel is Witherspoon’s debut and is based on her original idea. In addition to writing and publishing the novel, a screen adaptation is also in development.
Witherspoon said in a statement, “To say I am a fan of Harlan’s body of work is a massive understatement … the fact that he found my idea for this thriller intriguing enough to want to partner with me on it as co-author is a dream becoming a reality. Scheming with Harlan on how to thrill audiences with mysterious characters and complex narrative twists and turns has already been more fun than I can describe. I can’t wait for everyone to read what we have been imagining.

The 35-year-old actress performed a cover of Prince‘s song “When Doves Cry” while hanging from a swing inside a giant birdcage during the show on Tuesday (October 1) in Paris, France.
Riley, who is the granddaughter of the late Elvis Presley, also sings in her Prime Video series Daisy Jones and the Six.
“It was something that was meant to be joyful and fun. I felt inspired by this sort of, like, French nonchalance,” Riley told Elle. “I’m not, like, an incredibly good trained singer, but I think that if I get the opportunity [to sing], I’ll take it. Marvel puts centuries-old witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) on the road to redemption in “Agatha All Along,” a thoroughly enjoyable if slightly revisionist Disney+ spinoff of its hit 2021 show “WandaVision.”
Wacky neighbor turned black-hearted Wanda antagonist Agatha morphs here into someone who is less evil than simply incorrigible. Smack-talking, self-involved and a natural (yet reluctant) leader, Hahn’s Agatha is a blast to watch as she plays off fellow witches almost as compelling as herself.
Hahn struts through “Agatha” with an impermeable comedic self-confidence that further demonstrates her remarkable versatility. Although Hahn excels at playing searching, insecure women, Agatha’s comedic arrogance suits her even better.
“WandaVision” and “Agatha” creator Jac Schaeffer played with fire — and air, earth and water — by casting Aubrey Plaza as Agatha’s antagonist, a witch named Rio who helps free Agatha from being cursed by Wanda into magic-free anonymity in Westview, N.J. Comic arrogance is Plaza’s bit,...

Just in time for Judgment Day, Netflix has a new installment in the “Terminator” franchise for fans of the iconic, long-running sci-fi action franchise. This time, however, you won’t see any familiar faces — the series is animated. However, you might recognize some of the voices, so we’ve put together a handy guide to the “Terminator Zero” cast.
You won’t see Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese or Arnold’s T-800 in this story — it introduces a new timeline and all new characters to go with it. Set in 1997, Japan, “Terminator Zero” focuses on a developer named Malcolm Lee, who is hard at work on another AI system to compete with Skynet and save the human race. Naturally, a Terminator unit is sent back in time to target him and his three children, while a soldier from the future is sent back with a mission of her own.

Right up until his death in 2022, Bob Neuwirth was known to cognoscenti as a songwriter (“Mercedes Benz,” famously recorded by Janis Joplin), painter, recording artist, and onetime member of Bob Dylan’s inner hipster circle. The last thing he was known for was being famous, which his longtime partner, music executive Paula Batson, says was intentional. “He was very self-effacing in a way,” she says. “He didn’t believe in blowing your own horn. He loved promoting other people and helping them, but he wasn’t good at self-promotion.”

How difficult is it to write a convincing hit record for a film or TV show? Just take one look at the Harry Connick Jr rom-com Find Me Falling, streaming on Netflix…
There are all kinds of elements that, even in the best-written or best-directed films or TV shows, can pull the viewer out of the moment: it might be an off-key performance, an unconvincing prop or a special effect that doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. One thing that can be particularly difficult for filmmakers to get right, though, is to write a song that, in the movie or show’s fictional world at least, is a much-loved, multi-platinum hit.
This brings us to Find Me Falling, a romantic comedy by writer-director Stelana Kliris that appeared on Netflix on the 19th July. The premise is quite a good one: Harry Connick Jr plays John Allman, a creatively exhausted, middle-aged...

In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Tuvix", the jolly hobbit-like chef Neelix (Ethan Phillips) and the emotionless Vulcan security officer Tuvok (Tim Russ) are on a botanical mission together, collecting rare alien fauna for survival purposes. When they beam back to the U.S.S. Voyager with a bag of plants, however, the transporter goes haywire and accidentally fuses them into a single amalgamated being. The new entity bears a perfect blend of Neelix and Tuvok's physical appearances, and possesses both of their memories and personalities. The new being calls themself Tuvix (Tom Wright) and soon incorporates themself into the crew, finding that they are happy as an amalgamated being with their own identity.
"Tuvix" is one of the most notorious episodes of "Voyager," as the two-beings-in-one premise sounds like something out of a Saturday morning cartoon. It's doubly notorious for its conclusion. It turns out the Voyager's engineers have...

Calling all Baytriots! Bro King and director Michael Bay may finally be turning his gaze from the big screen to the small screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bay is in talks to direct "an acerbic fantasy series" entitled "Barbaric" for Netflix, which is based on the Vault Comics series of the same name.
"Barbaric" is due to star Sam Claflin (from "The Hunger Games" and most recently "Daisy Jones and the Six") and Patrick Stewart (Professor X and Captain Picard himself), with Sheldon Turner of "X-Men: First Class" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" acting as writer and executive producer of the series.
That last credit, of course, is how Turner met Bay in the latter's capacity as producer and founder of the Platinum Dunes production company, which began in 2003 with the company's remake of the original "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." While Platinum Dunes has overseen several television projects before,...

“The Great Lillian Hall” reunites three “American Horror Story” actresses to deliver a tour de force in TV movies. Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Lily Rabe all star in this HBO TV Movie, directed by Michael Cristofer, that follows the careers of fictional Broadway actress Lillian Hall.
It’s Lange who plays Lillian and the veteran actress has turned in another masterclass in acting. She has always been a commanding screen presence and that doesn’t change here as she depicts a legendary actress as a triumph on stage but a nervous wreck in rehearsals while she battles with early dementia. It’s always a treat watching icons play icons (Lange did this again in “Feud: Bette and Joan”) and while Lillian is fictional, the impact is no less felt. Critics agree, this could be Lange’s greatest performance yet.

The battle ended when Riley agreed to pay her grandmother $1 million, and Priscilla dropped her fight. Lisa Marie’s ex-husband, Michael Lockwood, claimed a part in that settlement, and now he wants Riley to pay for it.

It looks like Timothy Olyphant shall be the chosen one.
The Hitman star is set to voice the terse, redoubtable Terminator – the epic character once portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator franchise – in the forthcoming anime series, Terminator Zero.

While replacing the legendary 76-year-old star is no short of a mammoth feat, fans seem to be excited about Olyphant’s casting as the voice actor for the cyborg assassin. At least half of the pressure must be alleviated for him after having secured the fandom’s support, and as for the other half, we’ll soon find out.

On June 6, the 2024 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 13 creators and stars responsible for some of the most stellar work of the TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, the event is a new edition of previous IndieWire Honors ceremonies, this time focused entirely on television. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles celebration.
Coming off what would ultimately become her Emmy-nominated role as Daisy Jones in Prime Video’s conversation-dominating “Daisy Jones & The Six” miniseries, Keough wasn’t sure of her next move.
The actress, who will receive the Maverick Award at IndieWire Honors, was immersed in her production company, Felix Culpa, and her debut co-writing and co-directing feature, “War Pony,” received the Caméra d’Or at Cannes. There were paths to go down — but a true tale about the horrific murder of Canadian teenager Reena Virk didn’t seem like the obvious choice.
