Comedy “Breeders” Australian Premiere 16 July on ABC Australia...

Exclusive: Kimberly Carver, who represents the likes of Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, who are behind Wizards of Waverly Place reboot, has moved from Anonymous Content to Avalon.

Carver, who also recently exec produced Max’s Julia Child drama Julia, has joined the company as a manger based in LA.

It is the latest expansion for UK-founded firm Avalon in the U.S., where it has added six manager in the U.S. and struck a partnership with literary talent at The Agency.

Carver joined Anonymous Content at the end of 2021, where she was a manager and producer working in scripted and non-fiction formats, representing a diverse group of writers, directors, documentary filmmakers, and podcasters. In addition to exec producing Julia, she also produced several comedy series, including Barely Famous and Comedy Get Down, and co-created the non-scripted series The Julia Child Challenge during her tenure at 3 Arts Entertainment.

Trying is one of the most heartfelt and brilliant comedy series about parenting ever made. Created by Andy Wolton, the Apple TV+ original series stars Rafe Spall and Esther Smith as Jason and Nikki, an adorable couple in their mid-thirties who have been having difficulties getting pregnant. British boxing champion and “Love Island” runner-up Tommy Fury will make his acting debut with Oceana Studios’ “The Debt Inherited.”

The film also marks the directorial debut of Oceana CEO Danny Sawaf. Dubai-based distribution and production outfit Oceana, whose credits include “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend,” starring Gabriel Byrne and Mira Sorvino, “Monstrous,” starring Christina Ricci, and “Terrifier 2,” will launch sales on “The Debt Inherited” at the Cannes Film Market.

The black comedy crime film is written by Niki Sheldrake and tells the story of Colin and Stanley, two good-for-nothing brothers who are faced with the repayment of their dead father’s debt to a notorious loan shark named Maggie. Soon enough, they unwittingly become involved in a criminal underworld and entangled in a web of blackmail and deceit with a host of insalubrious characters.

FX’s John Landgraf’s annual tally of original series has revealed that there were 516 scripted titles on air in 2023, which was a 12% drop from 2022.

This marks the first reduction in scripted series in over a decade, since Landgraf and his team have been keeping score, outside of 2020’s Covid year.

It is notably down on the 600 shows that aired in 2022, which itself was a 7% rise from the year before.

Landgraf, speaking at TCA, joked that he was “finally correct” when it comes to peak TV. He said that it proves that even a broken watch is right twice day.

It comes 12 months after Landgraf predicted that there would be a “strong” indication that there would be a decline last year. While he was wrong a couple of times before, the exec has been proved right this time.

Lionsgate’s first trailer for Miller’s Girl sets up the twisted dynamic between a student, played by Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), and a teacher, played by Martin Freeman (Breeders).

Written and directed by first time feature filmmaker Jade Halley Bartlett, Lionsgate will be introducing the film at the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Festival. It will begin its theatrical run on January 26, 2024.

Dagmara Domińczyk, Bashir Salahuddin, and Gideon Adlon co-star. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Josh Fagen, and Mary-Margaret Kunze served as producers.

It’s rare to find a truly endearing comedy that deals well with the nuances of parenting and deftly handles dramatic moments in a compelling way. I’d argue there are two vastly underappreciated such shows, Trying from Apple TV+ and Breeders from FX. The former was renewed for a fourth season almost a year ago, and the fourth and final season of the latter is officially here. If you haven’t seen either, now is the time to check them out, and I would highly recommend starting with the lovely Breeders, which you can find on Hulu.

It’s understandable that the turn from July to August on the calendar doesn’t create much excitement for most TV viewers. “We did always want it to be honest, that’s for sure,” Martin Freeman told TheWrap in an interview conducted ahead of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. “From me, Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison’s first conversations about this show — when we were making what it would be six or seven years ago — it was basically a collection of all the things that were difficult about being parents.”

Freeman likened those initial conversations to a “comedy therapy session,” adding that he always wanted the show to be “fairly unflinching” and “not too pretty.”

The fourth season of Breeders introduces new challenges for the Worsley family, including Luke facing unexpected fatherhood and Paul and Ally questioning the future of their marriage. Martin Freeman, known for roles in major franchises like the MCU and The Hobbit, plays Paul, who must navigate his own shortcomings as a father while helping his son become a better dad. The news comes just one month before the premiere of Season 4, which debuts on the network July 31 with episodes available to stream the next day on Hulu. Starring Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard, the comedy about parenthood will pick up five years after the events of Season 3, which saw Freeman’s Paul and Haggard’s Ally on the brink of splitting up.

According to a press release, the fourth and final season of “Breeders” will bring “the biggest parenting challenge that Paul and Ally have ever faced, as 18-year-old Luke (Oscar Kennedy) drops a bombshell at Christmas dinner that will change everyone’s lives forever. FX’s Breeders is coming to its conclusion.

The Disney-owned cable network on Wednesday announced that the family comedy starring Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard will end with its upcoming fourth season. The final 10 episodes of the show will premiere July 31 on FX, with weekly installments of the series available the following day on Hulu.

Season four of Breeders was formally announced in July 2022, a day after its third season concluded on the linear network. The series grew its international base last year when it was available on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star banner elsewhere in the world.

The final season will jump ahead five years and follow the Worsleys on the verge of splitting up and facing their biggest challenges as parents.

Exclusive: Avalon, the production company behind HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and FX/Sky comedy Breeders, has hired Jenelle Lindsay as Executive Vice President of Television.

Lindsay, who is based in LA, joins from Steph Curry’s Unanimous Media, where she was President.

She will oversee the creative team developing and producing scripted series for the studio, which had over 40 productions last year.

Reporting to Avalon’s Global CEO Laura Kennedy, Lindsay helped Curry’s bolster his production company with series such as ABC’s Holey Moley, Netflix animated series Good Times with Norman Lear and Seth McFarlane, and Apple+ film Underrated with producer Ryan Coogler as well as a comedy for NBC and films for Amazon and Disney+.

Speaking exclusively to Deadline as BBC Studios shops the show at the London TV Screenings, creator and producer Akemnji Ndifornyen said cultural touchstones such as Netflix’s Top Boy are “accessible to our American cousins like never before.”

British director Piers Haggard OBE has died aged 83.

The film, TV and theatre director is perhaps best known for his 1978 BBC drama series Pennies From Heaven, for which he received a Bafta, and for establishing the directors guild Directors UK.

Haggard’s agents Casarotto Ramsay & Associates announced the news on Twitter, writing: “Our beloved client, Piers Haggard was a truly remarkable filmmaker, campaigner for directors’ rights, and wonderful human being. He will be deeply missed by us and all who knew him.”

HBO has announced a new stand-up comedy special featuring Marc Maron, set to debut in 2023. The special, which will feature all-new material, will be taped in front of a live audience at New York City’s Town Hall on Thursday, December 8.

To outsiders, Only Connect can be a punchline. They see it as the impossible quiz show – tough, smug and incomprehensible to anybody whose photo wasn’t in the local paper for passing A-level maths aged nine. Its host makes weird jokes, its questions may as well be in another language, and its contestants are nerds who probably cut their own hair. A line in an episode of Sky comedy Breeders typifies the stance when a parent tells their child that no, they can’t be home-schooled because then they’d end up on Only Connect.

Those people couldn’t be more wrong. Not about the host’s weird jokes, the esoteric questions – which often are in another language, especially if it boasts its own computer keyboard configuration or shares homophones with English words depictable in cartoon form. Nor are they wrong about the gloriously nerdy contestants, that’s all clearly true.

Martin Freeman, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Butters and Taylor Schilling will play the dysfunctional family at the center of folk horror film “Queen of Bones.” Production is currently underway in Canada.

Directed by Robert Budreau (“Delia’s Gone”) from a script by Michael Burgner, the film follows a widowed violin maker named Malcolm (Freeman) who lives on a remote Oregon homestead in 1931. His life is turned upside down when his twin children Lily (Butters) and Sam (Tremblay) find a spell book in their cellar which reveals that their mother’s death is connected to something that lives in the woods. The siblings decide to do whatever it takes to get their father and his friend Ida May (Schilling) to reveal the truth about what happened.

Queen of Bones follows twin siblings Lily (Butters) and Sam (Tremblay) who live at a remote homestead with their widowed father, Malcolm (Freeman), a violinmaker in 1931 Oregon. When Lily and Sam find an Icelandic spell book in the cellar, they begin to suspect a connection between their mother’s death and dark forces in the woods. They then embark on a dangerous mission to force their father and his friend, Ida May (Schilling), to reveal the truth.

ITV has unveiled a slate of new comedy commissions, most of which will premiere on Itvx, its upcoming free streaming service.

New comedy titles include “Plebs: Soldiers of Rome,” “Deep Fake Neighbour Wars,” “Ruby Speaking Count,” “Abdulla” and “Significant Other.”

“The arrival of Itvx gives us more opportunities to commission a broad range of comedies and a dedicated place for the genre to call home,” said Nana Hughes, ITV’s Head of Comedy. The executive added that ITV aspired to showcase a “huge cross section of contemporary, diverse and inclusive comedy.”

“We want to take risks but most importantly we want our audiences to find shows that reflect them and make them laugh,” Hughes continued.

“Plebs: Soldiers of Rome” is a a feature-length special based on the award-winning comedy series “Plebs” which has had five successful seasons. “Plebs” is directed and written by Sam Leifer and co-written by Tom Basden.
