FX’s John Landgraf’s annual tally of original series has revealed that there were 516 scripted titles on air in 2023, which was a 12% drop from 2022.
This marks the first reduction in scripted series in over a decade, since Landgraf and his team have been keeping score, outside of 2020’s Covid year.
It is notably down on the 600 shows that aired in 2022, which itself was a 7% rise from the year before.
Landgraf, speaking at TCA, joked that he was “finally correct” when it comes to peak TV. He said that it proves that even a broken watch is right twice day.
It comes 12 months after Landgraf predicted that there would be a “strong” indication that there would be a decline last year. While he was wrong a couple of times before, the exec has been proved right this time.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Breeders” Season 4, Episode 10, “No Matter What: Part Two,” the series finale.]
Typically, when a parent is caught screaming at their child, it’s not the errant adult who needs comforting. But “Breeders” — the FX series about childcare’s unexpected, even unbearable burdens — knows that good moms and dads can have bad moments. Martin Freeman, Chris Addison, and Simon Blackwell’s dark comedy offers itself, time and again, as a shoulder to cry on for caregivers who’ve given so much, they’re no longer themselves. It does so again during Episode 10, “No Matter What,” wrapping its figurative arms around the infuriated father. Well, fathers.
In the series finale, Luke (Oscar Kennedy) is at his wit’s end. He’s been traveling back and forth between Manchester and London, the former for a coveted music production course at the Manchester Institute and the latter to see his girlfriend, Maya (Deepica Stephen), and their newborn son,...

It’s rare to find a truly endearing comedy that deals well with the nuances of parenting and deftly handles dramatic moments in a compelling way. I’d argue there are two vastly underappreciated such shows, Trying from Apple TV+ and Breeders from FX. The former was renewed for a fourth season almost a year ago, and the fourth and final season of the latter is officially here. If you haven’t seen either, now is the time to check them out, and I would highly recommend starting with the lovely Breeders, which you can find on Hulu.

It’s understandable that the turn from July to August on the calendar doesn’t create much excitement for most TV viewers. That’s especially true this year, as Hollywood writers and actors are both on strike, meaning that new episodes of scripted TV shows will be hard to come by this fall unless the work stoppage is resolved very quickly (spoiler alert: it won’t be).
But August will bring some beloved titles back to streaming for new seasons, and some new selections that viewers may fall in love with while they wait for a world in which their old favorites are firing up production once again. Check below to see which shows and movies are making their way to streaming this week!

In its fourth and final season, FX’s “Breeders” is ending exactly the way its three creators always wanted: with brutal honesty.
“We did always want it to be honest, that’s for sure,” Martin Freeman told TheWrap in an interview conducted ahead of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. “From me, Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison’s first conversations about this show — when we were making what it would be six or seven years ago — it was basically a collection of all the things that were difficult about being parents.”
Freeman likened those initial conversations to a “comedy therapy session,” adding that he always wanted the show to be “fairly unflinching” and “not too pretty.”
According to the co-creator, executive producer and star, “very, very early on” the plan was to follow the series’ central family from when the kids were very young through college age. “We weren’t exactly...

The fourth season of Breeders introduces new challenges for the Worsley family, including Luke facing unexpected fatherhood and Paul and Ally questioning the future of their marriage. Martin Freeman, known for roles in major franchises like the MCU and The Hobbit, plays Paul, who must navigate his own shortcomings as a father while helping his son become a better dad. Daisy Haggard, best known for her work in Back to Life and Black Mirror, portrays Ally, a woman grappling with turning 50, her role as a mother, and deciding the fate of her marriage.
The Breeders season 4 cast will see the original cast members joined by some new faces to finish off the story of the Worsley family. The series first premiered in 2020 and focused on Paul and Ally, parents of two kids who had little experience or idea of how to raise them thanks in large part to their own ineffective parents growing up.

When FX announced late last month that its hit comedy series Breeders was ending, we didn't anticipate the trailer for the fourth and final season would have this much closure.
FX went public with the Breeders Season 4 trailer on Wednesday, and it's filled with bombshells about your favorite characters.
Before we get into the revelations, we should probably remind you that there's a five-year time jump by the time the series returns.
Paul and Ally are left blindsided when Luke reveals he's leaving the family home because his girlfriend is pregnant.
The teenager is ready to embrace the new chapter of his life away from the prying eyes of his family.
Ava reveals that she has feelings for her grandad's hairdresser, which leaves the family with many questions.
And it wouldn't be Breeders without some drama from Paul and Ally.
They're like the glue that holds the show together, but somehow,...

The story of the Worsley family is coming to a close. FX and the UK's Sky One have revealed that the Breeders TV series' upcoming fourth season will be its last. The show was created by Martin Freeman, Chris Addison, and Simon Blackwell.
A dark parenting comedy series, the Breeders TV show stars Freeman, Daisy Haggard, Alex Eastwood, Eve Prenelle, Joanna Bacon, Alun Armstrong, and Stella Gonet. The show explores the paradox that every parent knows but will never admit -- you would willingly die for your children, but quite often you also want to kill them. Paul (Freeman) is a caring father who discovers that he's not quite the patient man that he thought he was. His parenting partner is Ally (Haggard), a nurturing mother, loving wife, and a skilled businesswoman who has everything under control...

To outsiders, Only Connect can be a punchline. They see it as the impossible quiz show – tough, smug and incomprehensible to anybody whose photo wasn’t in the local paper for passing A-level maths aged nine. Its host makes weird jokes, its questions may as well be in another language, and its contestants are nerds who probably cut their own hair. A line in an episode of Sky comedy Breeders typifies the stance when a parent tells their child that no, they can’t be home-schooled because then they’d end up on Only Connect.
Those people couldn’t be more wrong. Not about the host’s weird jokes, the esoteric questions – which often are in another language, especially if it boasts its own computer keyboard configuration or shares homophones with English words depictable in cartoon form. Nor are they wrong about the gloriously nerdy contestants, that’s all clearly true.

This year marked the event’s return to in-person panels following virtual sessions during the height of the pandemic.
“The Mayans have battled for respect, territory and power through four intense seasons that have set the stage for an explosive fifth season that will test their very survival under ‘Ez’s’ newly claimed leadership,” said Nick Grad, president of originals at FX. “Elgin James and the creative team, the brilliant cast, crew and our partners at 20th Television have...
