Elizabeth Olsen had already been playing the Marvel superhero Scarlet Witch for years before she starred in the spinoff WandaVision. Despite Marvel’s success with movies, however, Olsen felt doing a television series like WandaVision was a huge risk for both her and the studio.

Olsen already fulfilled her contractual obligations as the Avenger Scarlet Witch when she was offered WandaVision. The limited series would be one of Disney +’s first live-action superhero streaming shows, and took an experimental approach to Marvel’s familiar formula. WandaVision would have Scarlet Witch using her reality warping powers to live out the sitcoms she’d seen as a child. But Olsen had a few reservations regarding the series.

“My contract with Marvel was done. Kevin Feige, who runs Marvel, had me come into his office, and he pitched me WandaVision.

The DC Universe has numerous projects in the pipeline, including a TV series centered on Booster Gold. Currently, we have little information about the show other than its announcement, but James Gunn has stated that just because something is announced doesn’t guarantee it will be released.

A few months ago, credible sources began reporting that Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani was cast in the role, which disappointed some fans who felt he didn’t physically match the character.

This speculation is particularly heightened given that fans have favored actors like Antony Starr and Chris Pratt for the role. Nanjiani has frequently been seen with James Gunn and the Superman cast at various events, fueling further rumors.

Recently, James Gunn shared an image showcasing the confirmed roles for the DC Universe, which included Nanjiani as Booster Gold. When asked if this was a confirmation of Nanjiani’s casting, Gunn responded with a clear “no.

Indie filmmaker Azazel Jacobs makes a true New York movie with “His Three Daughters,” his profound and moving drama about a trio of sisters hemorrhaging emotions about their father, who is dying in the next room. Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen deliver career-class performances as Katie, Rachel, and Christina, respectively, who stress over how to write their father’s obituary and how to come together despite years of spite between them. And tensions bubble up in a monologue-driven, theatrical directing style where Jacobs holds on the performances in long takes where other directors might want to cut to a reaction shot or somewhere else.

“I wrote it to a cutting rhythm. I tried to write the script so it would move exactly how I wanted it to film,” Jacobs, who has explored New York stories before, from “French Exit” to “The Lovers” and his breakout, “Momma’s Man,” said in a recent IndieWire interview.

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Netflix has taken in for development an untitled drama from former A Million Little Things showrunner Terrence Coli, Rabbi and author Steve Leder and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, Deadline has learned.

Written by Coli, the untitled project is described as a spiritual procedural about a group of ancient humans who’ve been sent back to Earth with a Heavenly mission: to bring hope to those struggling in their darkest hour and healing to our fractured world.

Coli, Leder and Kaplan executive produce. Kevin Marco is the creative executive for Kapital Entertainment. A rep for Netflix declined comment.

Finding faith/spiritually-based scripted series has been a goal for Netflix, whose model is built on offering programming for every segment of its worldwide audience. Ousley plays Everett, a man living out of his van as he struggles to cope with the death of his wife, Abigail, played by Preslea Elliott. Isolated from friends and family, Everett is haunted by memories of traveling around the world in his van with his brother Cameron (Chasen Parker) and his late wife.

“The story of The Runner deals with how we experience traumatic events in our lives. It is so relatable and I’m grateful that Tony entrusted me with Everett as the film is such a personal story for Tony. This was the most challenging role I’ve taken on so far,” Ousley said in a statement.

Hulu has canceled the comedy series based on the book of the same name by Zakiya Dalila Harris after a single season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

First put in development in April 2020 before Tara Duncan signed on to serve as president of Disney’s Bipoc-focused studio Onyx Collective, the 10-episode satirical comedy about the publishing world dropped its full season in September to impressive reviews. The series currently has an 86 percent rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences seem to have rejected The Other Black Girl with that score sitting at a lackluster 50 percent among viewers.

Danielle Henderson (Sorry for Your Loss) originally was set to serve as showrunner but was ultimately replaced by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey. Exec producers on the series included Onyx’s Duncan, Rashida Jones, Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, Adam Fishbach and author Harris.

It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Exclusive: Producers Peter Saraf and Eddie Rubin, who are in Park City to premiere the Sundance buzz titles Out of My Mind and Winner, have joined forces to create Optimistic Pictures, to develop and produce film and TV properties with an independent sensibility.

Saraf is the co-founder of Big Beach, the producer/financier responsible for one of the greatest successes to break at Sundance, the 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine. After a massive bidding battle that was won by Fox Searchlight ($10.5 million and 10% gross), the film got four Oscar noms including Best Picture, won two Oscars and grossed $101 million, on an $8 million production budget.

After their first teaming on The Farewell, Saraf and Rubin are reuniting with that indie hit’s star Awkwafina. She’ll produce and star in an adaptation of G, the Ling Ma short story which is included in her National Book Critics Circle Award winning collection, Bliss Montage.

Netflix is going to start solving the 3 Body Problem a little later than planned.

The series based on Cixin Liu’s sci-fi novels will be released on Thursday, March 21, 2024, the streamer announced Friday. The date is a few months later than expected; in June, Netflix said that 3 Body Problem would premiere in January 2024.

Since then, she’s played the character in numerous other Marvel projects, including “Aveengers: Age of Ultron”, “Captain America: Civil War”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, “Avengers: Endgame”, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, and the Disney+ series “WandaVision”.

While she’s managed to slide in a few other projects, she’s ready to play more roles that aren’t within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a cruel twist of fate, Sorry For Your Loss, one of the best shows about grief to premiere in recent years, may soon be wiped from the internet entirely. Last month, Meta announced it's shuttering the Facebook Watch originals group, a move that brings the company's foray into the streaming wars to an end.

The shutdown has been a long time coming: Facebook shifted away from scripted programming in early 2020, when it canceled Sorry For Your Loss after two seasons, and in June 2022, the Facebook Watch app was discontinued on Apple TVs and other devices. But while ongoing series like Red Table Talk are being shopped elsewhere, the demise of Facebook Watch means the service's back catalog could disappear at any moment — and with that threat in mind, there's never been a better time to check out Elizabeth Olsen's poignant half-hour drama.

Meta is shutting down its Facebook Watch original programming, a company spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter, leaving the future of shows like Red Table Talk in limbo as production company Westbrook Studios shops around the talk show for a new home.

The shuttering of the Facebook Watch originals division, first reported by Deadline, comes as Meta implements wide-ranging cost cuts across the company, with the most recent including a round of layoffs that is expected to impact 10,000 employees. Included in the cuts is Mina Lefevre, the former MTV executive who led development and original programming for Facebook Watch.

One of Facebook Watch’s most well-known shows was Red Table Talk, the talk show co-hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris. The series had five seasons on Facebook Watch and led to a spinoff series, Red Table Talk: The Estefans, with Gloria Estefan, Emily Estefan and Lili Estefan.

Facebook Watch is shutting down all of its original programming, which includes the Jada Pinkett Smith-hosted talk show, our sister site Variety reports. The show’s production company Westbrook Studios, founded by Pinkett Smith and her husband Will Smith, is reportedly looking for a new distributor for the series, which features Pinkett Smith in conversation with her daughter Willow Smith and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris as well as special guests. Amid broad cost-cutting moves, Meta is shuttering the Facebook Watch originals group, whose small slate of shows included the hit “Red Table Talk” hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, Variety has confirmed.

A Meta representative confirmed that the company is shuttering its originals group but declined to provide further comment. The news was first reported by Deadline.

With the shutdown of Facebook Watch originals, Mina Lefevre, head of development and programing for the group, is leaving the company. Lefevre joined Meta (then called Facebook) in 2017, after serving as MTV’s head of scripted development. At Meta, Lefevre reported to Ricky Van Veen, VP of creative strategy.

Lefevre’s exit comes as Meta is cutting 10,000 jobs across the company, coming after it laid off 11,000 staffers at the end of 2022. On Wednesday, Meta announced first-quarter 2023 earnings that beat Wall Street expectations, as its revenue grew 3% for the period.

Lefevre, who was formerly EVP and Head of Scripted at MTV, is exiting as part of the latest round of layoffs at the Mark Zuckerberg-run company, which has seen more than 20,000 employees leave.

The departure comes amid a pivot for Facebook, which already had scaled back its original programming efforts since the days of scripted series such as Elizabeth Olsen-fronted Sorry For Your Loss and Sacred Lies, shepherded by Lefevre.

None of the remaining Fb Watch Originals, most notably Red Table Talk, are coming back for new seasons as the company is getting out of that business, shifting its focus on creating VR experiences in Meta Horizon Worlds that can also be deployed across Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. Those words represent the cruelest thing Frank (Peter Friedman) can think to say to Brian Cox’s Logan Roy in the pilot for HBO’s Succession. Logan has just told Frank that, after 35 years of service, he’s being pushed into a secondary role, in part because Logan is considering which of his reprobate children will be taking over his corporate empire.

In the end, you’re just what you do.

Frank’s job was saved because, of course, the Succession pilot ends with Logan experiencing a brain hemorrhage on one of the family’s private helicopters — one of several times in the show’s run that Logan’s demise was approached asymptotically but never reached.

Desperate housewives never got out of style on television, and in “Love & Death,” Elizabeth Olsen is playing a particularly troubled one. The “Wandavision” and “Sorry for Your Loss” actor stars in the final trailer for the HBO Max series, released this Thursday.

In “Love & Death,” Olsen portrays Candy Montgomery, a real-life Texas housewife charged in 1980 for the murder of her friend and neighbor Betty Gore after Gore was found dead in her house from 41 axe wounds. David Chase has set his next series at FX with Hannah Fidell with Chase and Fidell attached as creators and co-writers.

The series, which is in development with a pilot commitment, is based on a previously unproduced script by “The Sopranos” director featuring a contemporary take by Fidell.

Fidell is set to direct the pilot with FX Productions producing the pilot. Chase, Fidell and Chase Films’ Nicole Lambert will serve as executive producers.

FX is heading to The Border.

The Disney-owned cable outlet has ordered a drama pilot based on a trio of novels by best-selling author Don Winslow. The Border — named after the third book in Winslow’s cartel trilogy — will delve into the drug war at the U.S.-Mexico border via the lives of several people on both sides of the conflict.

E.J. Bonilla (The Old Man) will star as Art Keller, a Mexican-American DEA agent. The cast also includes Frank Blake (Normal People) as Sean Callan, Annie Shapero as Nora Hayden, Sebastián Buitrón (Narcos: Mexico) as Adan Barrera and Luis Bordonada (Vida) as Miguel Angel Barrera.

FX optioned Winslow’s cartel trilogy — which also includes 2005’s The Power of the Dog (no relation to the 2021 film of the same title) and 2015’s The Cartel — in March 2019, shortly after The Border was published.
