In a couple of weeks, a new Lord of the Rings movie is coming to theaters: The War of the Rohirrim is an animated feature set over 100 years before The Lord of the Rings proper, about a conflict that leads to the construction of Helm's Deep, the fortress for the people of Rohan memorably featured in Peter Jackson's movie The Two Towers. It's a fairly obscure bit of lore, so why did producer Philippa Boyens, who also wrote the original Lord of the Rings movie trilogy alongside Jackson and Fran Walsh, think it was a good candidate to turn into a movie?
"Rohirrim was us testing the waters for ourselves," Boyens explained in the new issue of SFX Magazine. "Can we go back to Middle-earth? Should we go back? And it's been a joy to go back. I've fallen back in love with the whole story and the world,...

It is an exciting time for fans of DC comics for James Gunn’s Dcu has been coming along nicely, with the first film, Superman, expected to release next year. Full of several new characters and new faces in familiar roles, it stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Superman/Clark Kent’s one true love.

While it is exciting to have new actors redefine familiar characters and add to the legacy, there is one thing that even Gunn’s Dcu can’t do that Bitsie Tulloch did in Superman & Lois.

Lois Lane is a character often found in the many versions of Superman mythos, and in fact, without Lane, the Kryptonian superhero’s story might remain unfinished in a lot of iterations.

Despite shows like The Bear and Succession making the cut, the decline of entertainment is evident. Streaming has put an end to the reign of television, and Breaking Bad perhaps stands as one of the last original series to have come out of a network studio. In such desperate times, when every project lives under the threat of being scrapped or canceled on a whim, do we really need another reminder of the gross blunder committed by Game of Thrones?

Since the advent of modern television, shows have faced controversy and backlash due to their bad endings. How I Met Your Mother, Lost, Dexter, The X-Files, and Ozark remain etched in the halls of TV history for their horrifically bad, non-committal, or poorly scripted finales. By the look of things, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone may be spiraling down the same path.

Beatles ’64 (David Tedeschi)
While Andrei Ujică’s Twst / Things We Said Today, which premiered on the fall festival circuit this year, took a more avant-garde approach to Beatlemania in the United States, the David Tedeschi-directed, Martin Scorsese-produced Beatles ’64 is a far more straightforward and therefore fan-pleasing documentary about the Fab Four. Capturing their February 7, 1964 descent upon NYC, the neatly-assembled, restored archival footage shot by Albert and David Maysles is the finest part of the documentary, while present-day talking heads memories from Paul McCartney (speaking on how their lyrics attempted to make a universal yet personal connection), Ringo Starr, and especially David Lynch provide welcome context. David Jonsson, the fast-rising British star of “Alien: Romulus,” “Rye Lane” and “Industry,” has joined Phoebe Arnstein’s short film “If You’re Happy” as executive producer.
Starring “The Crown” alumnus Erin Doherty (soon to be seen in Disney+ series “A Thousand Blows”), “If You’re Happy” follows Lotte (Doherty) as she navigates the daunting challenges and demands of early motherhood. Seeking connection, she attends a local baby group led by a bizarre teacher (Jo Hartley). Lotte is further displaced by the surreal environment and uses a childish game to vent her fury, sparking an unexpected, primal outpouring of emotions amongst the other mothers.
“All the things about British cinema. Shot in my hometown — honest, complex simplicity. A story of our time,” said Jonsson, who was recently unveiled as one of Variety‘s 10 actors to watch in 2024.

Sarah Snook portrayed the role of Brian Cox’s daughter in the Emmy-winning drama Succession. And while starring in the show the actress witnessed the occasional explosive “diabetic rage” of the 78-year-old actor, who portrayed the family patriarch, Logan Roy throughout the show’s four seasons.

While these outbursts were integral to his character on-screen, Snook later revealed that Cox’s on-set eruptions, likely influenced by his diabetes, were likely to energize the atmosphere during filming and reflected in his portrayal of Logan Roy.

“Bob Marley: One Love”
Bob Marley’s fans have long been brought together by joyous songs, but his revolutionary ideas are sometimes overlooked because the music is so uplifting. His son Ziggy Marley says, “In order to better understand Bob’s message you have to look past the legend and see the human being, his struggles, emotionally, spiritually and physically.” The film “Bob Marley: One Love” does just that. It reminds us ofMarley’s courage in pursuit of his mission (dare we call it a vocation?), showing him performing days after an assassination attempt,...

The Sopranos may just be one of the most celebrated shows on earth. With its explosive plot, chaotically charged characters, blinding betrayals, and divisive ending, the HBO show easily ranks high among an elite group of shows fit for kings. However, despite the fancy ratings and the golden reviews, the behind-the-scenes account of the making of the show was most troubling.

The Sopranos was not the average HBO project. It marked the beginning of a revolution that radically changed the face of the television industry for the better. The mob crime drama not only dramatically altered the narrative structure of television projects but also had an impact on their tone, dialogue, cinematography, and grounded realism. Meanwhile, something else about the cast stood out in The Sopranos, too.

What do you mean TV insults are not the reason for the season? Family gatherings throughout the holidays are not always bastions of constructive thought and civilized conversation!
Well, maybe they are for some. But where is the fun in that? If you’re anything like me, you have a relatively dysfunctional family that hurls as many insults as compliments.
In that situation, it pays to be on your toes and keep your wits about you.
(Fox)
While this list is all about defending oneself from familial onslaughts, it’s not about making enemies of your own blood. Well, maybe the in-laws, but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles all too often.
Try to avoid creating a massive rift in the family by slinging an ill-timed Family Guy joke in front of grandma.
Of course, some of the best insults come from the raunchiest shows and characters.

Plaintiffs in the suit say the company intentionally misled them about the harm that the departure of the NBA would have.
There’s not much time left to watch the NBA on TNT or Max — relatively speaking, anyway. Live NBA games will officially depart from TNT and Max in the United States starting with the 2025 regular season, after Wbd settled a last-ditch lawsuit intended to claw back one of the three broadcast and streaming rights packages the league sold earlier this year. Now, however, the company faces a lawsuit from investors who claim that it misled them about the hit the company’s value would take if it lost live NBA games.
Key Details: Richard Collura seeks class-action status for his suit, claiming that Wbd willfully misled investors about the impacts of losing the NBA. The complaint says Wbd execs made “materially false and misleading statements regarding the company’s business.

Plot: Estranged cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) join a holocaust tour in Poland to fulfill the dying request of their late grandmother.
Review: A Real Pain is Jesse Eisenberg’s second film as a director and marks a substantial leap in quality since his pleasant – but minor – first effort, When You Finish Saving the World. With a tight running time, evocative location shooting, and two terrific performances at its heart, it’s no wonder this scored one of Sundance’s biggest deals, with Searchlight shelling out a cool $10 million for it.
At its heart, the film is a character study, allowing Jesse Eisenberg’s David and Kieran Culkin’s Benji to spar over eighty minutes without making their holiday too earth-shattering an event, with characters ending the film just as broken (or not) as the movie began. It’s one of the few films I’ve seen...

Deadpool and Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds has shared a new video to Instagram, and while we can't actually hear what he's saying, the fact that he's suited-up as the Merc With a Mouth in a Yuletide setting would certainly appear to confirm that a new Special Presentation is on the way.
Last month, Reynolds shared some behind-the-scenes photos of himself alongside Blind Al actress Leslie Uggams, and the Christmas decorations visible in the background led to speculation that they were shooting new scenes for a Holiday Special.
More recently, a rumor did the rounds that a new Marvel Studios-produced Deadpool (and Wolverine?) Special was indeed in the works, though no other details or a potential premiere date were disclosed.
There's a chance this is simply for some kind of Holiday-themed ad campaign, but with Deadpool and Wolverine already available on Disney+ and Blu-ray, we'd say a new Special is more likely.

Gareth Neame, whose Carnival Films shepherded “Downton Abbey” to international success, “could not have anticipated” that the British period drama would not only become a worldwide hit, but launch a successful film franchise, with a third film due September 2025.
But Carnival’s success isn’t limited to the moonshot of “Downton”: The British powerhouse, which sold to NBCUniversal in 2008, just launched “The Day of the Jackal” with Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch for Sky/Peacock and has the upcoming dramas “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,” starring Colin Firth, and the hotly anticipated “All Her Fault,” Sarah Snook’s first series since “Succession” wrapped.
Neame talked to TheWrap about how his series’ successes have changed the landscape for other U.K.-based productions and how Carnival still feels like a “boutique” studio despite being part of one of the biggest media corporations on the planet.
Read his full Office With a View Q&a below.

J.K. Rowling is the creator of the Harry Potter franchise, but in recent years, she’s gotten a lot more press for her views on transgender people. As Warner Bros. is currently developing a Harry Potter TV series, there was a question of how involved Rowling would be. Turns out, she’ll be involved quite a bit. At a recent press event, HBO chief Casey Bloy said Rowling was “very, very involved in the process selecting the writer and the director,” and her statements on transgender people “haven’t affected the casting or hiring of writers or production staff.“
In a further statement to Variety, HBO said Warner Bros. has “been working with J.K. Rowling and in the Harry Potter business for over 20 years” and “her contribution has been invaluable.” The statement continued, “We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship,...

Yellowstone returned earlier this month with a polarizing twist that killed its leading man, John Dutton (Kevin Costner).
While John’s death perfectly set up the final episodes of Yellowstone Season 5, it was driven by Costner’s departure from the mega-hit drama amid unrest behind the scenes.
The series will now proceed without its lead, which has compelled many fans to draw some comparisons to HBO’s Succession.
The Brian Cox-fronted drama wrapped its four-season run in 2023, but its leading man was written out early in the season after his character, Logan Roy, died of a heart attack.
The aftermath focused on Logan’s children’s quest to take over the family business and outmaneuver everyone in their way.
Yellowstone seems to have a similar path forward, with vultures circling at every corner to take control of John’s land.
Fans think the similarities are now uncanny

A host of new names have been added to the cast of dark comedy The Gallerist, joining the already-announced Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega.

AI has been haunting the film industry for some time, but has become a particularly pressing topic in the last year or so. One of the central issues at the heart of the 2023 writers' and actors' strikes, the rise of generative AI has proven to be truly a contentious development, and not just with writers looking to make sure their work isn't used to train some machine to emulate their work.
Until very recently, the threat of AI seemed to belong to a distant future when something akin to Skynet would become self-aware and we'd all find ourselves in some sort of post-apocalyptic nightmare world battling chrome skeleton robots with human teeth. Such a development would, in real-world terms, be thought of as the arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (Agi) — the type of AI that can adapt to multiple tasks just like a human. But the opposite, so-called Narrow AI,...

Are you hooked on gritty true crime series but wish they could occasionally be more colorful, female and fun? Well, Netflix might just have the next show for you.
The streamer is revealing a sneak peek Tuesday of its forthcoming Australian limited series Apple Cider Vinegar, a playfully fictionalized take on the story of Belle Gibson, the Australian single mother who launched a wellness empire by convincing the world she had brain cancer but was successfully curing herself with an all-natural lifestyle.
“This is a true-ish story based on a lie, about the rise and fall of a wellness empire; the culture that built it up and the people who tore it down,” Netflix’s official summary reads.
Netflix unveiled a batch of first-look images and a teaser video this morning featuring star Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, Dopesick, Unbelievable) as Belle during various stages of her improbable journey from anonymous striver to globally disgraced grifter.

Ben Affleck is not worried about AI taking over Hollywood. Speaking to “Squawk on the Street” co-anchor David Faber during a recent interview at this month’s 2024 CNBC Delivering Alpha investor summit, Affleck declared that “movies will be one of the last things, if everything gets replaced, to be replaced by AI.”
“AI can write you excellent imitative verse that sounds Elizabethan. It cannot write you Shakespeare,” Affleck explained after Faber asked if AI is a benefit or a threat to Hollywood creatives.
“The function of having two actors or three or four actors in a room and the taste to discern and construct… that is something that currently entirely alludes AI’s capability and I think will for a meaningful period of time,” Affleck said. “What AI is going to do is dis-intermediate the more laborious, less creative, and more costly aspects of filmmaking that will allow costs to be brought down,...

Playing Donald Trump’s mentor Roy Cohn in Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice is not the first time Jeremy Strong has tackled recent American history. Before the actor became synonymous with Kendall Roy in Succession, he played parts in The Big Short, Selma and Parkland. While the actor feels a slight discomfort discussing acting choices for a film whose main subject “poses such a clear and present danger to you and I,” Strong is no less proud of the work. “I am happy with how it turned out and happy that I went for it,” he says. “I almost didn’t.”
Deadline: What made you run toward this role and this film?
Jeremy Strong: You run toward it, because it’s so dangerous. Because it’s been done before brilliantly. It was done by Al Pacino [in Angels in America] in a really definitive way, that had such an impact on me.

Live games will move off TNT in 2025, but a creative settlement allows Wbd to save some face.
The NBA has one less headache on its plate. The league has agreed to a settlement deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, putting an end to a desperate effort by the company to keep its hands on a package of live NBA games past the end of the 2024-25 season. Those games are officially moving on to Amazon’s streaming service Prime Video, but Wbd did win a few concessions in the settlement, and as part of another deal have made an arrangement to keep the beloved “Inside the NBA” studio show alive.
Key Details: Wbd will continue to distribute NBA games in areas like Latin America and Northern Europe. “Inside the NBA” will be licensed to ABC and ESPN in a separate deal. Wbd will get the rights to some Big 12 college football...

There’s a specific kind of mischief that HBO’s Harry Potter series will need to manage as production gets underway, and that’s the offscreen aging of its young stars.
In September, the network launched a casting call for its TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novels, seeking children who, by April 2025, will be 9 to 11 years old and can feasibly play kid wizards Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. But in recent years, it’s become quite common for cable and streaming series to put two (or even three) years between seasons; in the case of shows like Netflix’s Stranger Things,...
