Tonatiuh has signed with CAA.
Tonatiuh recently wrapped filming the lead role of Molina in “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” directed by Bill Condon, opposite Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna.
The film, produced by Artists Equity and Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions, is based on Manuel Puig’s critically acclaimed and bestselling 1976 novel. “Kiss of the Spider Woman is set in an Argentinian prison in 1981. Lopez stars as the titular role, a fantasy woman named Aurora created by Luis Molina (Tonatiuh), a queer window dresser serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor. To escape the horrors of his imprisonment, Molina imagines movies starring Aurora as a classic silver screen diva, including a role of the spider woman, who kills her prey with a kiss. Molina forms an unlikely bond with his cellmate, a Marxist, Valentin Arregui Paz (Luna).
“It’s a very special musical,” Lopez told Variety in May.

Emmy Rossum is a jack of all trades and has dived deeper into several facets of the industry. Alongside her stint as an actress, Rossum is also a producer, singer and songwriter. Her cinematic journey began at a young age when she started performing in the Metropolitan Opera. While she did have some well-acclaimed projects to her name, it was 2011’s Shameless, that gave her the much-needed push towards stardom.

Last month, we were so excited to learn that Netflix would be bringing not one but two of Emily Henry's most popular bestsellers to life. While Jennifer Lopez will be producing a series adaptation of Happy Place for Netflix, the streamer will also be adapting People We Meet on Vacation as a movie. The film's leading stars have already been set, and now we're learning who's joined the cast.
In the leading roles as the book's main characters Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen, People We Meet on Vacation will star Emily Bader and Tom Blyth. Both are rising stars and excellent choices for these characters. Bader and Blyth will be joined by four familiar faces that we have all definitely watched in various Netflix movies and shows before.
On Sept. 18, Netflix announced that Sarah Catherine Hook, Jameela Jamil, Lucien Laviscount, and Lukas Gage have booked their ticket for this vacation!

[The story contains mild spoilers from the season finale of Sunny.]
In less than five years of its existence, Apple TV+ has carved a niche out for itself as a home to evocative, well-made and interesting science fiction, and the streamer has delivered once more with Sunny, the dark Japan-set retrofuturist comedy that wrapped its first season this week.
Starring Rashida Jones, Sunny tells the story of Suzie Sakamoto, a taciturn American woman living in Kyoto, whose life is upended by tragedy after her husband Masahiko (Hidetoshi Nishijima) and son Zen (Fares Belkheir) disappear in a mysterious plane crash. Poleaxed by grief, Masahiko’s company sends Suzie a domestic robot named Sunny, with artificial intelligence attuned to her particular needs and feelings. As Suzie, reluctantly, begins to bond with Sunny, and eccentric new friend Mixxy (annie the clumsy), the great enigma surrounding the plane crash begins to unravel involving the yakuza and domestic Japanese politics.

Lionsgate is set to release the film from writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett on Jan. 26 after it debuts at the Palm Springs International Film Festival earlier that month. Ortega stars as Cairo, a promising writer who navigates her complicated relationship with Jonathan Miller (Freeman) after his assignment leads to tension.

Later, Freeman laments, “If she can convince them that something happened between us, I would lose my job.”
Bartlett directs from her own script, which landed on the Black List in 2016. Dagmara Domińczyk, Bashir Salahuddin and Gideon Adlon co-star in the movie that counts Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Josh Fagen...

If cyberattacks and storms are any indication, writer-director Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind” looks to expand upon the more lo-fi terrors of Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name.
That’s surely helped by a big budget, as this is a Netflix production from the Obamas’ Higher Ground productions banner, plus major star backing: Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Kevin Bacon, plus “Industry” breakout actress Myha’la Herrold. In the book, an Airbnb vacation goes awry when an unknown apocalyptic event seems to shutter the world around the core characters.

Ach der lieber! German Expressionism fans everywhere are in sorrow as Sam Esmail’s seven-years-in-the-making passion project, a series adaptation of Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” has been shelved, Deadline confirms.
The series, from Universal Cable Productions (UCP), had been prepping for production in Australia and was expected to be the biggest TV series ever shot there. It was going to stream on Apple TV+, which had given it a full series order last year. “Push costs and uncertainty related to the ongoing strike led to this difficult decision,” a UCP told Deadline.
“Metropolis” is just the latest casualty of the ongoing WGA strike: the third seasons of “P-Valley” and “Yellowjackets” have been indefinitely delayed, as has the Disney+ show “Daredevil: Born Again” and Season 2 of “Severance.”
Esmail has had a flurry of new shows in recent years: Just since 2020 there’s been USA’s “Briarpatch,” Starz’s “Gaslit,” and Peacock’s “Angelyne” and “The Resort.

NBCU Launch is unveiling two new below-the-line diversity, equity and inclusion efforts aimed at boosting representation in key production roles within the TV industry.
The Below-the-Line Traineeship and Production Assistant Initiative will offer opportunities for paid on-the-job experiences on NBCUniversal TV productions to qualified talent from communities historically marginalized within the industry. The pipeline programs will focus on increasing the pool of talent of underrepresented groups ready to be hired directly onto projects.
“Below-the-line production roles have been historically underserved across our industry when we look at inclusion efforts. Our first major endeavor to increase representation on our production crews across Universal Studio Group and our entertainment networks are just a start in addressing this critical need,” Jeanne Mau, senior vp, TV Programming Diversity Equity & Inclusion, NBCUniversal, said in a statement.
Mau added that NBCU is confident “our ongoing below-the-line efforts will effectively contribute to lasting change in the composition...

How well do fact-based limited and anthology series perform at the Emmys? (Spoiler alert: very well)
Just as limited and anthology series based on real events have taken over the TV landscape, they have taken over the Emmys. But how well have programs of this particular genre actually gone over with the academy throughout the past few years?
Let’s take a look back at all nominations earned by limited and anthology series starting in 2015; that’s the year in which the rules were tweaked to require that a program can only compete as a limited series if it has a minimum of two episodes with a total running time of at least 150 minutes, tells a complete, non-recurring story, and doesn’t have an ongoing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.
This rule change came just a year after limited series (referred to as “miniseries” at the time) and TV movies were once again split up into separate program categories, undoing a three-year-old change that consolidated the two awards.

Quiz: The Year in Swag. Can You Guess Which Studio Sent the Guitar? The Coffee Maker? The Barf Bag?!

One of the perks that does not come with being an awards editor? Extra storage space.
It’s a necessity, particularly in the late spring (ahead of the Emmy-qualifying premiere dates of buzzy new TV shows) and in the fall (as Oscar hopefuls begin industry screenings) when swag boxes start to pile up on my doorstep. Let’s face it: Awards season is, at this point, year-round; so, too, is Swag Season — and the gifts are seemingly endless, and of varying quality and ingenuity.
There are the personalized items, like the Levi’s denim jacket with a hot-pink “Tyler” embroidered on the front left pocket, courtesy of Peacock in its promotion of Angelyne, or the size-11 Air Jordans also sent by Peacock to promote Bel-Air (which arrived in a package with a Kehinde Wiley-designed basketball in a glass case). Lukas Gage has joined the cast of the “Dead Boy Detectives” series at HBO Max, Variety has learned.
The eight-episode series was ordered at HBO Max back in April. It is based on the DC comics of the same name as well as “The Sandman,” from characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner.
The official series description states, “It’s a fresh take on a ghost story that explores loss, grief, and death through the lens of Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), two dead British teenagers, and their very alive friend, Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson). So, it’s a lot like a vintage detective series — only darker and on acid.”
Gage will play the recurring role of the Cat King, described as a charming trickster and itinerant cat spirit, who takes keen interest in Edwin.” Gage takes over the role from Alexander Calvert.

A version of this story about the designers behind “Angelyne,” “Impeachment: American Crime Story” and “Pam & Tommy” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
A nostalgic look in the rearview mirror is nothing new for television creators. But it is unusual when so many mine the same era, in this case reframing controversial personalities and events from the recent past. The frenetic landscape of the 1980s smashing directly into the 1990s was omnipresent in three different limited series: Peacock’s “Angelyne,” FX’s “Impeachment: American Crime Story” and Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy”. They not only provided viewers with a satisfying reintroduction to the excesses of those decades, but also gave their leading female characters a dissecting reevaluation. And the designers on all three projects were vital to the series’ success.

For Peacock’s limited series Angelyne, looks were everything. Getting the visuals of the Los Angeles legend right was vital for sure, but so was imbuing Emmy Rossum’s portrayal of the mysterious billboard model with a sense of humanity, allowing a real character to move and exist beneath the intense makeup and prosthetics.
“This is obviously a herculean, Everest-style undertaking,” explains Rossum, who in addition to starring serves as an executive producer. “You have to have people of a certain caliber to pull this off. Otherwise, you see a mask and you don’t see a human being.” She articulates that while the show takes inspiration from a real person, it’s an interpretation of reality. “We’re not doing a biopic, we’re telling a story that is about a character. But it’s also a fantasy of everything that she represents.

Peacock Paid Subscribers Stall at 13 Million in Q2, Streamer Sheds 1 Million Monthly Active Accounts
Peacock ended the second quarter of the year with a “relatively flat” 13 million paid subscribers and fell to 27 million monthly active accounts, Comcast revealed along with its Q1 earnings results Thursday. The streamer also lost 467 million during that three month stretch between April 1 — June 30, and its parent company advises Peacock will likely continue to post a loss throughout the rest of the fiscal year.
The NBCU streamer’s Q2 paying customer total is the same as the 13 million that Comcast reported in Q1 for Peacock, which has both free, ad-supported and paid, ad-free tiers. During the 2021-2022 season 94 scripted series earned the ReFrame Stamp for gender-balanced hiring. Among them were “Bridgerton,” “Euphoria,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Yellowjackets” and more. As 200 series were considered, 47 were found to earn the stamp — a 7 decrease since the previous year.
Each “Stamped” series was found to hire women or individuals of other underrepresented gender identities (including those who are non-binary or gender non-conforming) in at least four out of eight key roles including writer, director, producer, lead, co-leads and department heads. Additional points were awarded to productions that hire women of color in key positions, and to those with overall gender parity in their crews.

This is a 7 decrease from the previous season but more than double the number of shows that qualified when ReFrame Stamp first launched in 2018. ReFrame and IMDbPro have now renewed their collaboration on the Stamp initiative through 2025.
The ReFrame TV Stamp is awarded to scripted television and episodic productions that hire women or individuals of other underrepresented gender identities/expressions in at least four out of eight key roles including writer, director, lead actor, and producer. Additional points are awarded to productions that hire women of color in these positions, and to those with overall gender parity in their crews.
The 200 shows were chosen based on their top-performing four weeks during the eligibility period on the IMDbPro proprietary ranking of titles.
For the first time, ReFrame has also issued a Company Report Card, indicating where studios, streamers, and networks have met the ReFrame Stamp standard. Apple had the highest percentage of its content earn the Stamp – 75 of its eligible series met gender-balanced hiring criteria – and the majority of the major studios saw at least 40 of their content earn the Stamp.
Key findings of the 2021-2022 report include:
The majority of showrunners are men, and the majority of women showrunners are white. Of the 200 shows analyzed, 59 had a woman showrunner (29.5). Of those shows, only 7 had a woman of color showrunner (3.5). Men directed the majority of episodes; many women directed multiple episodes. Of the 2008 episodes analyzed, 723 (36) were directed by 293 women. 194 episodes (9.7) were directed by 88 women of color. We are nearing gender parity for episodes written by women, but not for women of color writers. Of the 2008 episodes analyzed, 973 were written by women (48.5). 325 episodes (16.2) were written by women of color. More women cinematographers are getting hired, but very few women of color. 44 of the 200 shows (22) hired a woman cinematographer for at least one episode, which indicates an increase of over 100 from prior year. However, only 7 shows hired a cinematographer who was a woman of color (3.5). 62.5 of shows in the Emmy Awards Outstanding Comedy Series category received the Stamp, as did 60 of shows in the Outstanding Limited Series category and 37.5 of shows nominated in the Emmys category of Outstanding Drama Series.
“The Stamp is a mechanism to show us where the work of building a more inclusive industry is being done, and to celebrate the executives, producers, showrunners, creatives and department heads who are making that happen by building gender-balanced teams,” Andria Wilson Mirza, ReFrame’s Director said. “It also serves as a method for accountability. With this report, we’re sharing the studios’ current standing, and we invite them to set a goal of increasing the Stamps they earn year-over-year.”
To address areas that have continued gender disparity, ReFrame is tweaking current criteria for next season. Effective June 1, 2022, there will be a higher value assigned to a series’ showrunner, as well as a more expansive analysis of key roles in production, adding 1st Assistant Directors, Unit Production Managers, Line Producers, Intimacy Coordinators, and more to the reviewed roles. Furthermore, the total points needed to secure the Stamp will be increasing.
Since the Stamp was launched four years ago, over 800 productions have earned it.

Apparently the next best thing to being Emmy nominated is being Emmy snubbed. At least, that seemed to be the case on Tuesday morning, when publicists quickly switched gears after their clients failed to get an Emmy nomination — and instead started pitching them to be included in the roundup of this year’s biggest “snubs.”
It’s a further sign of just how important the awards industrial complex has become in Hollywood. If you aren’t nominated, the next best thing is to have fans and the press agonizing about the fact that you should have been nominated. And sometimes it finally works: Look at how years of “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn being on the “snub” list got to the point that many of us in the media — myself included — started threatening to burn this whole town down if Seehorn didn’t get a nod. She finally did this year,...

Last year was a tumultuous awards season for Netflix. After missing out on the Emmy nominations morning crown by one, the streaming service went on to nab the most trophies on when the season finished in September. If Netflix wants to repeat, the battle will be even more uphill this time around. Standing in their way is perennial rival HBO, which nabbed 140 nominations across HBO and HBO Max on Tuesday morning.
HBO didn’t quite reach “second and third place combined” numbers, but it stands as the clear overall leader after the nominations dust settled. Netflix was the only other service to crack triple digits, getting to 105. Depending on how you value the breadth of distribution, that’s an average of 3 nominations across 35 projects, compared to the average of nearly 6 for HBO/HBO Max’s 24 nominated series, movies, and specials.

One of the newest and fastest-growing streaming services at the moment is NBCUniversal’s Peacock. Launched in 2020, the platform already boasts (as of April 2022) more than 13 million paid subscribers across the US and Europe. Recent shows include the reboot of “Queer as Folk,” the pop miniseries “Angelyne,” and the hit comedy “Rutherford Falls,” whose second season premiered earlier this month.

In an Emmys season of some truly memorable transformations on screen, Emmy Rossum leading the cast of Peacock’s “Angelyne” may be the most mind-boggling.
The legendary billboard queen of Los Angeles is well-known for her larger-than-life appearance, with breasts, hair and makeup that could only be rivaled by a Barbie doll or drag queen. That is, until Rossum stepped into the role.
She sat in the makeup chair for upwards of five hours on some shoot days and embodied the icon over six decades, with each time period requiring a totally different set of accouterments. Those included individual prosthetics on her cheeks, chin, lips, nose, forehead, eyelids, breasts and neck. Even her ear lobes required their own unique pieces. Although it sounds like a lot, prosthetic designer Vincent Van Dyke told Variety he appreciated the challenge of transforming Rossum without it being obvious how much work went into the process.

Given the volume of TV out there, it’s no surprise that viewers are seeing double or even triple, with overlapping trends and actors seemingly everywhere you look. As my colleague Emily Longeretta recently noted, stars like Elle Fanning, Chloë Sevigny, Sandra Oh, Julia Garner and Nicole Byer are just some of the performers eligible for multiple projects in this year’s Emmy race.
That’s a tremendous trend among actors. It’s also pretty clear that 2022 will go down as the year of true-crime adaptations, both of the murder and the non-murder varieties. And then there are just the good ol’ fashioned “adapting a true story because it’s a good yarn” entrants such as “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” and “Angelyne.”
As I’ve noted before there are so many damn shows this year that the titles start to merge: “Anatomy of a Scandal” versus “A Very British Scandal.

If you’ve lived in Los Angeles for more than two years, actually if you’ve lived or worked near Sunset Blvd, there is a good chance you’ve spotted the city’s mercurial angel, Angelyne. A fixture in the city for almost 40 years, Angelyne is part sex goddess, part wannabe celebrity, and a good chunk of aspirational businesswoman. She never truly hit the peak of show business she was aiming for, but her ability to get free billboards all over the city endeared her to the masses.

For decades, countless Angelenos wondered about the identity of the mysterious blonde bombshell who appeared on hundreds of billboards across town beginning in the mid ’80s, most bearing little but her pseudonym: Angelyne.
A precursor to famous-for-being-famous megastars like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, Angelyne was the ultimate pop-culture tease. Her intention was to pique curiosity, but never satisfy it.
It wasn’t until The Hollywood Reporter‘s Gary Baum published two probing feature profiles of her — in 2015 and 2017 — that her true story was revealed: The sex-symbol who eternally cruised around L.A. in a pink Corvette and seemed to embody the glitz of the city itself was born about as far from that world as one could imagine— in Poland, in 1950, to Holocaust survivors.

What’s the best strategy to get ahead in the brutally competitive Outstanding Limited Series category at the Emmys?
Should you drop your show early, so voters have plenty of time to watch, absorb and live with it before they’re overwhelmed by other contenders? HBO’s “The White Lotus,” Hulu’s “Dopesick” and Netflix’s “Maid” hope so.
Or is it better to come out in the first couple of months of the new year, as Television Academy members begin to think more seriously about this year’s Emmys? That could be the ticket for later Hulu entries like “The Dropout,” “Pam & Tommy” and “The Girl From Plainville.”
Or should you wait and premiere in the last month or two of Emmy eligibility, where you might be one of the final things voters discover and love? Starz’s “Gaslit,” HBO Max’s “The Staircase” and FX’s “Under the Banner of Heaven...
