Taiwan-Italy production outfit Volos Films has unveiled a diverse slate of features and documentaries at the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf).

The feature film lineup includes “Polaris,” directed by Yamanaka Yoko, whose “Desert of Namibia” screened at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. Set in a Tokyo bar, the film follows women from different backgrounds whose lives intersect. The project marks Volos’s first Japan co-production, with producers Chang Chuti, Chuma Kusuke, Mao Okuno and Stefano Centini attached.

Stefanos Tsai’s “Sunshower” centers on a Chinese-American man visiting his grandmother with dementia, who mistakes him for her first love. Jonathan Hsu produces, with Centini executive producing.

In the documentary section, Hong Kong director Frankie Sin presents “Nomads of the Island,” exploring his family’s fishing heritage and migration to Taiwan. Sin’s previous documentary “Another Home” won the Biff Mecenat Award at Busan 2024. Chiu Ping-Yu and Centini produce, with Peter Yam and Huang Hui-Chen are executive producing.

The story of a personal and artistic crisis slowly becomes a tale about a nation at an important point in its history, not so much because of the events which occur, but because of the mood and mentality which can be observed in the streets of Taipei.

Exclusive: Florencia Lozano (Life After You) and Juan Pablo Espinosa (Half Brothers) are set for recurring roles opposite Melissa Barrera in Breathe, Netflix’s one-hour drama series from Blindspot creator Martin Gero and writer-executive producer Brendan Gall, and Warner Bros. Television.

In Breathe, written by Gero and Gall, when a small plane crashes in the middle of the Canadian wilderness, a lone woman (Barrera) must battle the elements and odds to survive. Barrera’s Liv is a razor-sharp Manhattan attorney who finds herself profoundly out of her comfort zone when her plane crashes and she must battle for survival.

Lozano and Espinosa will play Liv’s mother and father, respectively.

Gero executive produces via his Quinn’s House production company, along with Gall. Warner Bros. TV is the studio.

Lozano co-wrote and stars in Life After You, which was awarded Best Feature and Best Actress at the Nice International Film Festival.

Vertical Ent. has debuted an official trailer for an amusing romantic comedy titled Here After, previously known as Faraway Eyes when it initially premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival last year. This is a dark fantasy-comedy about the meaning of love in the afterlife. When an actor dies after a bad breakup, he finds himself stuck in "singles Purgatory" where he must find his soul mate in order to cross over to the other side. Ha! And you thought dating in real life was hard, just wait until the "ghostly dating scene". The film stars Andy Karl as Michael, with Christina Ricci, Nora Arnezeder, Jackie Cruz, and Michael Rispoli. This reminds me a bit of The Lobster at first, about being stuck somewhere until you find a partner. It looks quite sweet, I'm curious.

Sales and distribution executives Ryan McCombs and Alfredo Lara Orbezo have unveiled their US-based sales, finance and production company Sublimity Entertainment and announced a slew of AFM deals.

The company’s maiden market slate comprised nine titles including fantasy romance Faraway Eyes starring Christina Ricci and France’s Nora Arnezeder from Zack Snyder’s upcoming Army Of The Dead for Netflix.

Deals on Faraway Eyes closed in Russia (Paradise), Mexico (Renaissance Media), Brazil (A2), Latin America (MundoFilms) and Middle East (Front Row) along with Vertical Entertainment for North America.

Written and executive produced by Jenna Bans, Good Girls stars Christina Hendricks, Retta and Mae Whitman as suburban moms who are tired of trying to make ends meet and decide it’s time to stick up for themselves by robbing the local grocery store.

Cruz will play Rhea, a warm, easygoing dental hygienist and single mom who becomes a new friend to Beth (Hendricks) after they start bonding at the park while watching their kids play. Rhea appreciates the company and wants to help Beth but has no idea that the two of them are more connected than she realizes.

Exclusive: Jackie Cruz, best known for Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, will join Lucy Hale when filming for the romantic comedy A Nice Girl Like You commences next month in New Jersey. Siblings Chris & Nick Riedell are directing the film based on a screenplay by Andrea Marcellus.

Based on a true story by Ayn Carillo-Gailey, the pic follows Lucy Neal (Hale), an adorable, follow-the-rules, somewhat repressed, well-educated violinist who is thrown for a loop when she is accused of being too inhibited by her ex-boyfriend. In an effort to prove him wrong, Lucy creates a rather wild to-do list that sends her on a whirlwind journey of self-discovery, friendship, and new love.

Cruz will star as Nessa, a personal assistant and overgrown “girl gone wild” who is adventurous, flirtatious and openly embraces her sexuality. Cruz has spent six seasons as Flaca Gonzales on Oitnb, which is wrapping after it’s upcoming seventh season.

Three-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl, last seen on Broadway in Groundhog Day, has been cast as the male lead in the upcoming Pretty Woman: The Musical. He’ll play Edward Lewis (Richard Gere in the 1990 movie) opposite Samantha Barks’ Vivian (the role that made a superstar of Julia Roberts).

Karl, who won an Olivier Award for the London production of Groundhog Day and also starred in Broadway’s Saturday Night Fever, replaces Steve Kazee, who left the Pretty Woman production for family reasons, according to producers.

The new musical, which begins performances July 20 at the Nederlander Theatre, also stars Karl’s real-life wife Orfeh, a Tony nominee for Legally Blonde. Karl had seen the show in pre-Broadway workshops and the Chicago run.
