On Thursday, the American Film Institute made its selection of the top 10 films and TV shows of the 2024 calendar year. The AFI Awards list includes Oscar frontrunners like Neon’s “Anora” and A24’s “The Brutalist,” and hot new small-screen favorites like HBO’s “The Penguin” and FX’s “Shōgun.” Did Your favorite projects make the cut? See the full lists below.
Among the acclaimed movies that were passed over this year are “September 5,” “Gladiator II,” and “The Substance.”
Some of the notable overlooked television programs include “Slow Horses,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Ripley.”
Over the past two decades, the AFI list has been a pretty strong indicator of how the Academy Awards category for Best Picture will ultimately look. Last year, only two out of AFI’s top 10 — “May December” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” — failed to make that Oscar lineup. They were ultimately replaced by two...

The American Film Institute has unveiled its list of the 10 best films and television programs of the year, a selection that reflects the rich diversity of storytelling across genres, budgets and platforms. With turkeys packed in bellies and holiday gift shopping now officially underway, it’s getting to be that time of year where we look back on 2024 and reflect on what’s most important: The movies that made it all bearable. Kicking things off, the storied French film magazine Cahiers du Cinema has released its top 10, which include some selections from IndieWire’s own 2023 best-of list. Though our official 2024 list is not yet locked in, we also share some items on our 2024, so far best-of list. The list only includes movies that opened theatrically in France in 2024, hence the crossover.
Serving as the hub for the French New Wave and launching the careers of legendary talents such as François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, Cahiers du Cinema has been in publication since 1951 and continues to offer a bold, distinct voice in the world of film. One of its more unique choices over...

It’s one of the biggest weekends of the year, not just because we’ve all stuffed ourselves with turkey and pie, and not just because we’re all madly dashing to get our shopping done for the holidays. It’s also that rare, long weekend where we have time to actually go to the movies, and possibly bring the whole family. This year there are a lot of great movies at the multiplex, from award-winning international features, Academy Awards contenders with ambition to spare, beautiful movies the whole family can enjoy, and genre flicks aplenty to scare and to thrill you. So to help make the decision of what to see if you want to ditch streaming for a day, we’ve curated a helpful list.
These are the best of the very best movies in theaters this weekend.

No matter the changes and upheavals from recent years, Cahiers du cinéma’s status as cinematic north pole has waned little––evidenced by annual top 10 lists combining beloved arthouse titles, one or two mainstream favorites, and titles whose status has yet to be established stateside.
This year is the epitome of such, topping out with Alain Guiraudie’s great Misericordia––his fifth time on the list and second in first place, after 2013’s Stranger by the Lake––and continuing with Todd Haynes’ May December. Works that have shown up many places this year and last find real estate with three those either lesser-seen or entirely disregarded in America: Rodrigo Moreno’s The Delinquents, Sophie Fillières’ Ma vie ma guele, and Jonás Trueba’s Septembre sans attendre. Meanwhile––and in a sterling confirmation that Cahiers knows what is up––there is love for M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap.

96 years of Oscars, 14 international feaure films nominated for Best Picture.
While some awards bodies have already commenced the season, Best Picture is still very much an open race. One of the statistics many predictors consider is the presence of international feature films in the category. Since 2018’s Roma - and save 2020, where Another Round even got into Director - every Best Picture lineup has included one. Last year, history was made, when two international features making it in, with Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest.
Perhaps this is one of the effects of the inclusivity efforts the Academy has initiated post-#OscarsSoWhite, where they included more world artists into their membership. This year, which international feature films will stand a chance of getting into this year’s Best Picture roster? Consider...

Plot: Estranged cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) join a holocaust tour in Poland to fulfill the dying request of their late grandmother.
Review: A Real Pain is Jesse Eisenberg’s second film as a director and marks a substantial leap in quality since his pleasant – but minor – first effort, When You Finish Saving the World. With a tight running time, evocative location shooting, and two terrific performances at its heart, it’s no wonder this scored one of Sundance’s biggest deals, with Searchlight shelling out a cool $10 million for it.
At its heart, the film is a character study, allowing Jesse Eisenberg’s David and Kieran Culkin’s Benji to spar over eighty minutes without making their holiday too earth-shattering an event, with characters ending the film just as broken (or not) as the movie began. It’s one of the few films I’ve seen...

Jurors at the EnergaCamerimage cinematography fest say the Golden Frog main competition films have been remarkably varied and inspiring in the event’s 32nd edition.
The 12 competing films “were radically different from each other,” said “Barbie” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, whose directorial debut, “Pedro Paramo,” is also screening at the fest. “I enjoyed that.”
The varied styles, approaches and storytellers, he added, defied easy categorization. “Happily, I didn’t notice trends, which I have noticed sometimes in the past in some festivals.”
Juror Anthony Dod Mantle, who won Golden Frogs in 2008 for his lensing of “Slumdog Millionaire” and in 2016 for “Snowden,” said, “I’ve been to this festival before and the overall collection of films and categories, I felt, was even wider. I feel slight absence of certain films from other ethnic backgrounds. They were different, these films, but they could be far more different.

The Academy has unveiled its list of eligible films for the 97th Oscars in the animated, documentary, and international feature categories, spotlighting various blockbusters and critically lauded works. Submissions span major studios and independent filmmakers alike, and the competition promises to be one of the most competitive as films seek nominations.
A total of 31 animated feature films are in contention this year, including DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot,” IFC Films’ “Memoir of a Snail,” and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” which recently became the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. While this year’s number is slightly down from 33 submissions in 2023, it marks an increase from the 27 entries in 2022, reflecting a robust year for animation. Among the list also is Janus Film and Sideshow’s “Flow,” which will also compete in the international feature race for Latvia.

At the Cannes Film Festival six years ago, British producer Tessa Ross arranged a meeting with an emerging German-born filmmaker named Edward Berger. Ross — the Oscar-winning force behind 12 Years a Slave, Slumdog Millionaire and The Zone of Interest — had fallen in love with Berger’s British historical miniseries Patrick Melrose and wanted to work with him. She proposed several projects — she won’t say which — but none took.
Pondering her options back in London, Ross hit on it: Conclave, an adaptation of Robert Harris’ novel to which she controlled the rights. The story told of the infighting, scandals and crises of faith at the Vatican after the pope’s unexpected death — a compelling if hardly uncontroversial yarn. Enchanted by a first draft from Oscar-nominated screenwriter Peter Straughan (of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy fame), Berger soon said yes to the story of the world’s most secretive and sacred election.

Remember the days when anyone could simply head on over to their local theater on a whim, check the marquee for whichever movies happened to be playing next, and treat themselves to any number of solid, efficiently-made pictures made specifically for adults? That nostalgic scenario might as well feel as extinct as the dinosaurs in the year of our Lord 2024, but don't you dare tell that to Clint Eastwood. It goes without saying that at 94 years old, the nonagenarian is much closer to the twilight of his prolific career than its dawn, but the inevitable passing of time hasn't slowed him down one bit. If anything, he continues to prove that time has only forged a filmmaker as scrupulous, focused, and impassioned as ever.
Granted, the release of his latest sees Eastwood navigating a much different studio system than the one which first ushered him into the spotlight as one of our greatest American storytellers.

For the first time in its history, the contest for the Audience Award at the Middleburg Film Festival has resulted in a tie. “Conclave” from Edward Berger and “September 5” from Tim Fehlbaum won top honors at the 12th edition of the Northern Virginia event.

It also stars Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. Rossellini received the Agnès Varda Trailblazing Film Artist Award at this year’s festivities.

J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow is one of Netflix’s most-watched movies of this year so far yet the director revealed today it was mainly intended for an older audience.
Speaking at MIPCOM, the Oscar-nominee said his creative team were “surprised” when the movie about the Uruguayan rugby team’s survival experience after their plane crashed in the Andes proved to be a “phenomenon” with younger audiences.
“Society of the Snow was meant to be for a more mature audience,” said Bayona. “When I look back it makes sense because it had young actors going through a difficult situation and the younger audience felt related to these characters. But it was never intended to be a film for young people and it became one.”

Polish director Olga Chajdas continues chasing different projects as she follows Netflix’s “1983,” HBO’s “The Border” and award-winning features “Nina” and “Imago” with the new six-episode historical drama “A World Divided.”
“A long time ago, I promised myself I wouldn’t repeat myself, ever,” she explained to Variety. “I lean towards fiction, so it seemed intriguing, but I wasn’t interested in making another documentary about World War II. We focus on real-life characters. Some are more famous than others, but we keep things subjective, trying to reflect what they were experiencing at that very time.”

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” In 2022 this prize went to “Dune” while “Top Gun: Maverick” won in 2023. The reigning champ is “The Zone of Interest.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Sound.)

Remember when Woody Allen discovered the cinematic beauty of Europe? That’s what we’re dealing with here. The quaint, cobbled streets of Europe, with their picturesque, romantic buildings, which, otherwise seen, might evoke misery and poverty. Yet, through the right lens and a few carefully placed hanging flower baskets, these images are transformed, adding colour and hope as a sentimental story unfolds.
For his second feature film, Jesse Eisenberg has taken this easy route, featuring himself (again) alongside his on-screen alter ego, Kieran Culkin. By weaving in the atrocities suffered by the Jewish people in Poland, Eisenberg (coming from a Jewish Polish family tree) has crafted a narrative with personal resonance—a choice that, apparently, permits him the references and justifies his attempt to tackle such a heavy subject.

Int’l Oscar Race Heats Up
Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón in ‘Emilia Perez
Only a handful left to declare: With the deadline for entry to the Best International Feature Film of the 97th Academy Awards closing on October 2, the race is seriously heating up and frontrunners are starting to emerge. Deadline has tracked 83 entries so far against 88 last year, with a handful of territories still expected to publicly declare their submissions, so we are nearly there in the highly anticipated race. We’ve been on the ground at many a film festival in the past few months and therefore have a decent sense of the frontrunners at this stage.
Hot contenders: Early heat is emanating from Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez for France. Karla Sofía Gascón stars as...

Sound designer Johnnie Burn — a newly-minted Oscar winner for his acclaimed work on “The Zone of Interest” — has detailed the thorough and deeply considered process that went into recreating the sounds of Auschwitz for Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama.
With the film telling the real-life story of German SS officer Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, who raised their children in a farmhouse next door to the Nazi death camp, the horrifying sounds heard from across the wall provide much of the film’s chilling impact. Taking into account the historical context, Burn — speaking at the BFI London Film Festival on Thursday at an event sponsored by Variety — explained that a very “ethical approach” was taken, saying that it was “very important not to sensationalize” anything and “to be respectful” throughout the process.
Glazer’s initial concept of using sound “to suggest” the industrial-scale mass murder taking place was the main “ethical choice,...

Predicting the eventual five Oscar nominees for Best International Feature is made difficult by the three-step process that begins after the October 2, 2024 deadline for countries to submit entries. To be part of the selection process for this category, which was called Best Foreign Language Film before 2020, requires a great deal of dedication. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best International Feature.)
In the days following the deadline for submissions, the academy determines each film’s eligibility. Then the several hundred academy members who serve on the International Feature screening committee are divided into groups and required to watch all their submissions over a six-week period that ends in early December. Their top 15 vote-getters will make it to the next round. That list of semi-finalists will be revealed on December 17, 2024.

Industry representatives at the Zurich Film Festival are optimistic that moviegoers are returning to cinemas and signs are aplenty that business is improving as the international theatrical sector recovers from the impact of the pandemic and two Hollywood strikes.
Discussing the disruption and current state of the sector at the Zurich Summit industry forum were Rebecca Kearey, head of international and business operations at Searchlight Pictures; Neon CEO Tom Quinn; Stefanie Fahrion, head of distribution and sales at Film4; and MK2 Chairman Nathanaël Karmitz.
Business may not be back to normal, but it is picking up and there are positive signs, according to Kearey.
“The pressures are enormous and have been enormous and continue to be fairly large. I think though, like everything, resilience and creativity come through, trumping some of that.”

If humanity were to one day be forced to welcome a celebrity overlord, it could do worse than the tuxedoed visage of Jesse Eisenberg.
At least so the scene at the New York Film Festival this weekend suggested, where on Sunday an unsettlingly large Eisenberg — Zooming in from Budapest — hovered literally and figuratively over the proceedings.
“Please telI me you’re in costume,” said actor Kieran Culkin, gazing upon the looming human penguin.
“Yeah, this is my costume. The last time I wore a tuxedo on my own was a bar mitzvah,” Eisenberg mused. (The filmmaker was wardrobed up for a day of shooting his new Now You See Me movie.)
The occasion of the NYFF gathering was Searchlight’s premiere of A Real Pain, Eisenberg’s Sundance sensation (he wrote, directed and stars) with designs on awards and audiences when it arrives in theaters Nov 1.

With awards season in full swing, a quartet of top publicity and marketing execs and campaign veterans took to the stage at the Zurich Summit over the weekend to discuss its evolution and tips for success.
PremierPR Director of Film Jonathan Rutter said the season had expanded considerably in terms of its impact, duration and geographical reach over the course of his career.
“25, 30 years ago, awards campaigning didn’t really exist. Now it’s the driving factor for film releases between September and February,” Rutter told film professionals at the Zurich Film Festival’s annual industry meeting.
“Before, the day a film opened in cinemas, that was it. That was the end of your work. You just moved onto the next film. Now, something opens in November, and you have to sustain interest through to the last point at which people can vote, and that’s the Oscars,” he said.

In a significant leap for British-Indian cinema, Sandhya Suri’s gripping crime thriller Santosh (2024) has been chosen to represent the U.K. in the Oscars’ International Feature Film category. Following its acclaimed debut at Cannes earlier this year, where it premiered in the prestigious Un Certain Regard competition, the Hindi-language film is already generating considerable buzz. As the U.K. proudly eyes a second consecutive Oscar in this category, following its triumph with Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, all eyes are on Suri’s debut feature to carry the torch forward.
Santosh stands as an enthralling and introspective crime drama, set in rural northern India, that delves into the complexities of caste and gender. The film introduces audiences to Santosh, a recently widowed woman who unexpectedly inherits her late husband’s position as a police constable.

“Nickel Boys,” the acclaimed drama from director RaMell Ross based on a Colson Whitehead novel, is being pushed from its planned release in October to now open in a platform release late in the year in December.
Amazon MGM is rescheduling “Nickel Boys” from a release on October 25 in New York City and November 1 in Los Angeles to now open December 13 in NYC and December 20 in LA, an individual with knowledge of the shift told IndieWire. The film premiered at Telluride and was the opening night film for the New York Film Festival.
The change is significant for a serious Oscar front runner. But distributor Amazon MGM is thinking of another movie of its own that worked its way to some Oscar glory with the same exact approach: last year’s “American Fiction.”

Exclusive: After a successful world premiere at Telluride and opening night at the New York Film Festival, and with Rotten Tomatoes critical reviews at 80% fresh, Amazon MGM Studios is taking Orion/Plan B’s Nickel Boys to screens later in December.
Originally the RaMell Ross-directed and co-written feature based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was scheduled to go October 25 in New York City and November 1 in Los Angeles. Now Nickel Boys will debut December 13 in NYC and December 20 in LA.
That’s a platform launch similar to Amazon MGM’s Oscar-nominated American Fiction, which opened last year on December 15, ultimately making $21 million stateside. In addition, A24’s The Zone of Interest had a mid-December launch and expanded throughout January off the heat of several awards and noms.
The release-date move gives Nickel Boys ample ways to be discovered not only during awards season but also by moviegoers.

Daniel Day-Lewis said he was through with acting after 2017’s “The Phantom Thread” but his son Ronan has got him back in front of the camera. The pair co-wrote the script for “Anemone,” which explores the relationships between fathers, sons and brothers. This marks the directorial debut for Ronan Day-Lewis, who is also an accomplished artist. Filming is underway in the UK on this Focus Features flick which co-stars Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green.
Ronan has recruited some top tier talent behind-the-camera as well. The cinematographer is Ben Fordesman, who won a British Independent Film Award for his lensing of “Saint Maud.” The costume designer is Jane Petrie, who collected an Emmy for “The Crown” and a BAFTA for “The Essex Serpent.” And the production designer is BAFTA nominee Chris Oddy (“The Zone of Interest”).

Tunisia has selected Nada Mezni Hfaiedh’s drama Take My Breath, exploring intersex identity, to represent it in the Best International Feature Film category of the 97th Oscars.

Oksana Karpovych’s Intercepted is a chilly but significant document of war. It aims to psychoanalyze imperial violence by juxtaposing haunting, desaturated, depersonalized landscape and interior photography of physical damage wrought by the Russian invasion of Ukraine—and life persisting in its wake—with allegedly intercepted audio of phone calls by Russian men on the front to their mothers, wives, and sisters back home.
Some men we hear question the war and the Russian government only for the women to parrot state propaganda narratives justifying the invasion as correction or encouragement. But in other conversations, the roles are reversed, with the men falling back on state narratives to justify their actions. Several confess to war crimes—looting, rape, killing of civilians, torture and execution of prisoners—and the women’s responses range from shocked and horrified to the chillingly supportive.

The Film Federation of India (Ffi), a non-governmental body of producers, distributors and studio owners formed in 1951, is facing backlash over its choice of Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies as India’s official submission to the Oscars’ best international feature category.
The selection of Laapataa from a competitive slate of 29 films came as a surprise to many who expected Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light to represent the country. Kapadia’s film made history as the first Indian title to compete at the Cannes Film Festival in three decades, and it went on to win the Grand Prix, the festival’s second-highest award. Given that last year’s Grand Prix winner, Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, subsequently won the Oscar for best international feature, questions have emerged regarding the jury’s choices.
