Newly minted Oscar winner Ed Berger, director, co-writer and producer of All Quiet On the Western Front, which was named Best International Film last night, is set to direct and executive produce Helltown, an eight-episode crime thriller in development at Amazon Studios from Mohamad El Masri (Severance), Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey’s Team Downey. Fremantle has struck a two-year, first-look deal with Nine Hours, the new production label set up by Edward Berger, director of the Oscar-nominated “All Quiet on the Western Front,” and his partner Luke Rivett.

Netflix drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” recently scored nine Oscar nominations, including best picture, and a record 14 BAFTA nominations. Berger’s other directing credits include “Patrick Melrose,” “Your Honor,” “ The Terror” and Fremantle’s “Deutschland 83.”

The two-year deal will see Fremantle become the primary home for all of Nine Hours’ television projects. It will also give the super-indie second look access to Berger’s new film pipeline. The new production company was launched by Berger and Rivett with producer Jeanne Tremsal.

The deal with Berger was spearheaded by Fremantle’s Christian Vesper, who was recently promoted to CEO of global drama, and Seb Shorr, executive VP of commercial and business affairs. Lorenzo De Maio assisted on the deal.

Fans rushed to Lizzo’s defence after comedian Aries Spears said multiple insulting comments about the “Good as Hell” singer.

There's probably no doubt that "The Rehearsal" is one of the most intriguing HBO shows to have been released in a while. As the events of the show unraveled, it went from a fairly innocuous if not tedious experiment to something that challenges our preconceived notions of free will and choice. Nathan Fielder might be a madman for these experiments, but he also proved himself to be perhaps the most humanistic and thoughtful comedian currently working. He just happens to display these characteristics of his comedy in an unconventional way.

As thought-provoking as the show is, it can't be ignored that it is also objectively hilarious. A lot of this comedy came from the subjects that Fielder featured on the show, as well as from his natural reactions to what they say or do. “Yellowjackets” has turned into one of Showtime’s buzziest new shows in years. The highly addictive drama centers on a group of teenage girls on the same soccer team whose plane crashes, forcing them to adapt to a new life in the wilderness. As they eventually resort to desperate measures to survive, the series also tracks the lives of four of the girls who survived into adulthood, each of them hoping to keep their past hidden. With positive acclaim from both critics and audiences, “Yellowjackets” might just be the series that Showtime needs to get back in the Emmy conversation.

While Showtime has landed multiple acting nominations in recent years, the network has struggled to break through in the main series categories. Its last comedy, drama or limited series to be nominated for the top prize was the miniseries “Escape at Dannemora” in 2019, with another miniseries, “Patrick Melrose,” getting in the year before.

The Oscars are a few days away, and I’m looking not only at the nominated actors’ performances this year, but at the stage careers that helped them develop and/or refine their skills to be eligible for Academy Awards. Half of this year’s Oscar nominees for acting were previously involved with Tony-nominated and other productions on Broadway.

For example, Ariana DeBose, the Academy Award Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee, most-predicted on Gold Derby to win, cut her teeth on Broadway for a decade before she landed her nominated role as “Anita” in West Side Story. A mother and daughter deal with an ambiguous and uncertain threat that binds them closer together in The Girl at The Window, a new thriller helmed by Mark Hartley and starring Radha Mitchell, Vince Colosimo and Ella Newton.

Producer Antony I. Ginnane describes the feature, now shooting in Melbourne, as a mix between Rear Window and Disturbia.

The film is the prolific producer’s 72nd, and already looks set to reach a wide audience – international sales agent Blue Fox Entertainment has already sold the it to territories including USA, UK, South Africa, Indonesia, Cis (Commonwealth of Independent States) and the Middle East.

“Audiences worldwide love thrillers, and our script is filled with twists and turns that will engage and excite. I’m looking forward to seeing Mark Hartley work with our terrific cast to bring this story to life,” Ginnane says.

LA-based Blue Fox Entertainment and Australian producer Antony I. Ginnane have announced the start of principal photography in Melbourne on Radha Mitchell thriller The Girl At The Window.

Mark Hartley is directing the film from a screenplay by Terence Hammond (Last Dance) and Nicolette Minster under strict Covid Safety protocols.

Ginnane, whose producing credits include Screamers and Patrick, described the project about a mother and daughter dealing with an ambiguous threat that brings them closer together as a blend of Rear Window and Disturbia.

Cedric the Entertainer, star of hit CBS comedy series The Neighborhood, has been tapped by the network and the Television Academy to host the 73rd Emmy Awards on Sept. 19. The live ceremony will be held in-person at the Microsoft Theater with a limited audience of nominees and their guests.

Reginald Hudlin and Ian Stewart, who executive produced the well received virtual 2020 Emmys on ABC, and Hamish Hamilton, who directed it, are returning in the same capacity this year, with Done+Dusted and Hudlin Entertainment producing. UK TV outfit Little Island Productions (Patrick Melrose) has acquired TV rights to T. C. Farren’s well-received sci-fi thriller novel The Book of Malachi, we can reveal.

The story follows Malachi, a mute thirty-year-old man who receives an extraordinary job offer. In exchange for six months as a warden on a top-secret organ-farming project, Raizier Pharmaceuticals will graft him a new tongue. Malachi finds himself on an oil rig among warlords and mass murderers but the book ponders whether the prisoner-donors deserve their fate.

Amazon Studios has released the first set of images from Spanish blockbuster series “El Cid.” The series tells the story of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, A.K.A. El Cid, a Castilian nobleman and war hero in medieval Spain and traces his journey as he tries to find his place within a complex monarchy that tries to control him. Jaime Lorente (“Money Heist”) plays the titular character, and the cast also includes José Luis García-Pérez, Elia Galera, Carlos Bardem, Alicia Sanz and Jaime Olías.

Anti-Worlds Releasing has secured UK and Ireland rights to Zoé Wittock’s Jumbo from Paris-based WTFilms.

The surreal French drama received its world premiere in competition at Sundance earlier this year and was also selected for the Berlinale, playing in the Generation 14plus strand.

It marks the directorial debut of Belgian director Wittock and stars Noémie Merlant as a shy fairground worker who becomes attracted to one of the carousel rides. The cast also include Emmanuelle Bercot and Sam Louwyck.

Montreal-based sales agent Attraction Distribution has closed deals across Europe and Asia on Dutch road-rage thriller Tailgate.

The film, which Attraction will screen at the Cannes’ Marché du Film Online this week, has sold to the UK (Signature), France (Trade Media), Russia/Cis (Volga), China (Jetsen), Japan (New Select) and South Korea (Challan).

Written and directed by Dutch filmmaker Lodewijk Crijns, the film is produced by Amsterdam-based Topkapi Films and Savage Film, the Belgian production outfit behind Patrick and The Ardennes.

Australian action thriller “2099: The Soldier Protocol,” starring David Arquette, has been picked up for international sales by Los Angeles-based Spotlight Pictures. Directed by transgender woman Dee McLachlan (“The Jammed”) it will be launched for buyers at the European Film Market.

Boosting the film’s sales potential is an agreement with Vertical Entertainment to release it in North American theaters on March 27.

The film, released in Australia as “The Wheel,” is the story of a neuroscientist who is forced to take part in a project to build an enhanced human fighting machine. McLachlan, who was born in South Africa and transitioned gender after moving to Australia, weaves in themes of greed, loss and humanity, and questions our compliance in such atrocity, all in the name of science.

Here's everything coming to Amazon Prime instant video in March 2020!

For its new releases in March 2020, Amazon Prime is enlisting help from some horror friends.

Yes, horror is the name of the game this month with Night of the Living Dead (albeit the 2007 version), The Crazies, and The Descent all arriving on March 1. And if that weren't enough, Pet Sematary comes a little later on on May 19. Look at Church the cat in that thumbnail image. How could you not want to watch his spooky adventures?

The Amazon original offerings are typically sparse for March 2020 but still pack some punch. Italian import ZeroZeroZero stars Gabriel Byrne and arrives on May 6. Then British import Agatha Christie's The Pale Horse comes a little later on March 13.

For what it's worth, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot debuts on March 13 so it's not all horror and all European TV all the time.

The full line-up for this year's Glasgow Film Festival was announced today. Opening with Alice Winocour’s Proxima, which stars Eva Green as an astronaut preparing for a mission to the International Space Station, the festival includes nine world premières, ten European premières, 102 UK premières and 39 Scottish premières.

Cambodia-born British filmmaker Hong Khaou brings the follow-up to his critically acclaimed Sundance debut “Lilting” with a moving drama about a young man of Vietnamese descent rediscovering his roots in “Monsoon,” starring “Crazy Rich Asians” actor Henry Golding.

Despite producing only around 15 feature films per year, Portuguese cinema has consistently won significant festival prizes.

Reese Witherspoon is teaming with MGM to produce a movie version of Gail Honeyman’s bestselling novel “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.”

Witherspoon and Lauren Levy Neustadter will produce for their Hello Sunshine production company, which picked up the rights last year. The book is the winner of the 2018 Costa Debut Novel Award and is told from the point of the protagonist, a socially awkward 29-year-old in Glasgow, Scotland, with suppressed memories of a brutal childhood. The adaptation is being written by Liz Hannah, who wrote Steven Spielberg’s “The Post.”
