Traditional horror movies with an easy-to-follow plot, relatable characters, and a healthy dose of scares are probably every horror fan’s comfort food. That’s because, when it comes to horror, the experimental and abstract genre pieces can be very hit or miss. In 2024 alone, I have come across In A Violent Nature, and I loved its take on the slasher subgenre. Bramayugam’s exploration of casteism and classism on a monochrome canvas was excellent. Oddity’s portrayal of revenge was haunting. And Outside’s use of the zombie subgenre to talk about the patriarchy was worthy of all the applause in the world. Then you have movies like Night Swim, The Devil’s Bath, Consumed, Baghead, The Hangman, Munjya, MadS, Mr. Crocket, and Don’t Move, which undoubtedly have a good concept at their core, but the execution is simply too muddled to be impactful. The erstwhile Crossbones of the MCU has crafted a niche for himself as a contemporary Charles Bronson over the last decade, parlaying mainstream buzz from projects like “The Purge 2” and Mma drama series “Warrior” into a string of superior indie action movies — even if he himself shies away from Bronson comparisons when speaking about his career.

“Not that I’m comparing myself to Charles Bronson, because I couldn’t,” Grillo told IndieWire during a recent interview over Zoom, adding with a laugh, “Charles Bronson never took his shirt off on a soap opera.”

Stephen Emery, a producer and film executive who worked for Gale Anne Hurd and Bill Gerber and on films featuring the likes of Clint Eastwood, Anna Kendrick, Liam Hemsworth, Aaron Eckhart and Liam Neeson, has died. He was 46.

Emery died Saturday in a Los Angeles gym after a workout, Big Swell Entertainment CEO Andy Horwitz told The Hollywood Reporter. He recently joined the production company that had launched in October.

“Everyone that had the pleasure to know Stephen Emery is heartbroken over the sudden loss of one of our own,” Horwitz said in a statement. “Stephen was much more than an invaluable producer, he was also an irreplaceable friend. His passion for film was outweighed only by his passion for life, and he lived every day like it was his last. We will miss his adventurous spirit, his loyal friendship and his genuine love for life. Rest in peace, brother.

A cause of death has not been determined, but Emery had survived a heart attack five years ago.

Emery was a producer at Big Swell Entertainment, a production company launched by Andy Horowitz in late 2022, and previously served as head of film and TV at The Solution Entertainment Group from 2016 until 2022. He is known for his work co-executive producing Netflix’s “Wheelman” and executive producing “Killerman,” “Line of Duty,” “Honest Thief” and the upcoming “Werewolves.”

Exclusive: Jeremy Rush, whose feature directing debut was Netflix thriller Wheelman starring Frank Grillo, has been set to direct contained space thriller Retrograde.

The project comes from producers Mandalay Pictures and Juniper Productions. The two companies previously teamed on supernatural drama Nine Days, which debuted at Sundance this year and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.

Mark Mazur has penned the Retrograde screenplay, which was on the 2019 Hit List. The story, set after a nuclear war has erupted between the U.S. and Russia, follows six astronauts aboard the International Space Station who are ordered to seize control of the facility from their foreign colleagues by any means necessary.

Saban Films announced on Thursday that it has picked up U.S. rights to Steven C. Miller’s “Line of Duty,” starring Aaron Eckhart.

“Line of Duty” follows a disgraced cop (Eckhart) who finds himself in a race against time to find a kidnap victim whose abductor he accidentally killed.

The action thriller was directed by Miller from a script penned by Jeremy Drysdale (“Grand Theft Parsons”). In addition to Eckhart, the film stars Giancarlo Esposito, Courtney Eaton (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), Dina Meyer and Ben McKenzie (“Gotham”).

Grillo’s long list of credits includes “The Purge: Anarchy,” “The Purge: Election Year,” “Captain America: Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Wheelman,” and “Warrior.” On the TV side, he was the star of the Audience drama series “Kingdom,” which also starred Nick Jonas and Jonathan Tucker.

The eighth annual Napa Valley Film Festival, which takes place Nov. 7-11, continues to have a lot going for it. Beyond top-notch meals and wine from 50 chefs and 75 wineries, the festival has 10 screening venues for 100 new independent films starring the likes of Natalie Portman, Willem Dafoe and Helena Bonham Carter.

“It’s the party of the year,” says Brenda Lhormer, the festival’s co-founder/director, of the nearly week-long event that will be held at various Napa Valley landmarks including the Cameo Cinema, Charles Krug Winery, Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch, Jam Cellars Ballroom at the Margrit Mondavi Theater, Lincoln Theater, Native Sons, Uptown Theater, the Archer Hotel Napa, Las Alcobas Napa Valley and the Drive-In at the Napa County Fairgrounds.

In a previous iteration of the movie business, a derivative B movie such as “Reprisal” would have provided gainful employment for actors such as Eric Roberts, Ice-t, and Gary Busey — who, truth to tell, likely would have delivered more than a fair share of down-and-dirty cheap thrills — and premiered on the New Releases shelf at Blockbuster Video stores everywhere. That was then, this is now: Fodder of this kind can land at least a smattering of theatrical engagements on the same day it’s made available on demand. Actress Caitlin Carmichael has landed the female lead in the new series Dwight in Shining Armor, set for the BYUtv network.

The series is a contemporary fish out of water original scripted comedy with Carmichael as “Gretta,” a young warrior princess who has been sleeping for a thousand years and wakes up in the 21st century with no understanding of the world around her.

Carmichael was recently seen in a recurring role on Fox’s The Mick, and next up plays a young Olivia Wilde in the Amazon film Life Itself, which will be released in September. She has also appeared on Young Sheldon and in the film Wheelman.

With strong effects work belying what was surely a tiny budget, Liam O'Donnell's Beyond Skyline finds the first-time director relying on his experience in VFX departments of much bigger Hollywood productions. Barnes in “The Purge” series of horror films. He recently has partnered in a production company (WarParty Films) and is the title character in their debut movie “Wheelman,” which is distributed and available now on Netflix, as part of their film group.

The “Wheelman” is also the debut film for writer/director Jeremy Rush, and currently has an 88% favorability rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In this tense thriller, Grillo portrays a getaway driver who is double crossed, and suddenly has to protect his family from retribution. This morning, Netflix has officially announced the renewal of their adult animated show “Big Mouth” for a second season. The show was created by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Jennifer Flackett, and Mark Levin, and Season 2 is slated for 2018.

This vulgar yet introspective original series is a hilarious coming-of-age story that follows the adolescent experiences of three best friends as they navigate their teenage crises: Nick (voiced by Nick Kroll), Andrew (John Mulaney), and Jessi (Jessi Klein).

Frank Grillo is the kind of guy you would trust with your life — or at least he seems like it.

The 52-year-old New York City native has cultivated a career out of playing someone you’d want in your corner — a small-town police chief, a commanding officer in the Army, and even a Marvel super villain — on screens both big and small. (For what it’s worth, his character in “Purge 3: Election Year” also passionately dedicated his life to protecting the first female president. Do with that what you will.)

In all seriousness, the buzz around Wheelman, the feature film debut of writer/director Jeremy Rush, has been described to me by more than one person who has seen it as an extension of the driving sequences in Drive; basically, non-stop driving action.

Grillo stars as a nameless getaway driver who gets a tip that he's been double crossed and he spends the remainder of the movie trying to figure out who sold him upriver without a paddle.

We featured a teaser trailer for this last month, and here's the full trailer to follow that. Wheelman is told entirely from the perspective of the driver, with most shots inside the car, taking place over the course of one night and one bank robbery that goes terribly wrong. Frank Grillo plays the wheelman, co-starring Garret Dillahunt, Caitlin Carmichael, Wendy Moniz, and William Xifaras. This actually looks pretty damn good, and buzz from Fantastic Fest seems to indicate it might even exceed expectations. This really does look a lot like a grittier Baby Driver, though.
