Based on the 2008 Jeff Jefferson Award nominated play "Superior Donuts," written by Tracy Letts and first produced at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre.
James Burrows, who directed countless episodes of "Taxi" starring Judd Hirsch, is also the director of this series.
Unfortunately, along with other CBS sitcoms such as Kevin Can Wait, 9JKL, Living Biblically, and Me, Myself & I, this show (Superior Donuts) was cancelled due to low ratings and to make room for new sitcoms for 2018-2019 TV schedule.
James and Maya were written out of the series after season one, with Sofia essentially replacing Maya. James was said to have been transferred to another department, and no explanation was given for Maya's absence, though it can be presumed she moved on after completing her Ph D studies and research at the shop.
Katey Sagal and Judd Hirsch had a guest appearance on the same episode of The Big Bang Theory (2007).
