After teaming up for the biographical period drama Queer, filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and Daniel Craig could pull the pin on an adaptation of Sgt. Rock for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios. According to Deadline, Guadagnino would go behind enemy lines for this project before shooting his American Psycho film for Lionsgate. No deals are in place, but reports say Challengers and Queer scribe Justin Kuritzkes is in charge of the screenplay.

The Prime Video series amassed 1.02 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, good for first place among original series and second among all titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Season two premiered on Aug. 29 with three episodes, and Nielsen says about 70 percent of the show’s weekly total was for those three, with the remainder devoted to season one. (Viewing totals on the ratings service’s charts cover all episodes of a series.)

Variety will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Bleecker Street with a cocktail party and awards presentation to Bleecker Street CEO Andrew Karpen on Oct. 5 at the New York Film Festival. Karpen will be honored with the Variety Vanguard Award for his exemplary leadership and extensive contributions to the indie film community. AMC made a bet earlier this year that licensing a number of its shows to Netflix would help them find more viewers. That bet appears to have paid off.

Two AMC shows, Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches, are among the top 10 streaming titles for the week of Aug. 19-25. They were added to Netflix at the beginning of that week as part of a deal struck in July to place about a dozen AMC shows on the service, complete with branding as the “AMC Collection.” (The shows will be available for 12 months.)

It’s not new territory for AMC, which partially credited Netflix for a huge spike in ratings for Breaking Bad’s final season and has also licensed The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, among others, to the streamer in the past.

Dark Winds drew 929 million minutes of viewing for the week, good for fourth place overall.

After their critically acclaimed and audience-favorite romance Challengers earlier this year, writer Justin Kuritzkes and director Luca Guadagnino have re-teamed for Queer, and it couldn’t be more different. Surreal, funny, and most of all sexy, Queer challenges the audience in ways that will almost certainly ensure it is divisive, but are incredibly ambitious swings nonetheless.

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by William S. Burroughs (Naked Lunch), Queer follows Lee, an American expatriate living in Mexico City, as he searches for connection and a drug that will unlock the power of telepathy. This is certainly Guadagnino’s most out-there film yet, sharing more resemblance with something like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas than the Italian auteur’s filmography.

Now, Craig adds William Lee, a drug-addicted gay American expat, to that list in Luca Guadagnino’s sexually charged and fantastical love story, “Queer.” The film made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, where Guadagnino and co-star Drew Starkey participated in a post-screening Q&a.

Craig’s sensitive and transformative portrayal of a emotionally fractured man could be his greatest performance yet. It might even land him at the center of the Oscar race for best actor — if the more conservative Academy voters aren’t squeamish about the film’s sexually graphic scenes or put off by its non-traditional narrative.

“Inside Out 2” (Disney), the biggest domestic movie since “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022, finally arrived at home. Released in theaters June 10, it still ranked #10 at the box office last weekend — which is probably why it could debut with a $24.99 three-day rental and take first place at both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (ranking by revenue).

This week Netflix had three of its own original films among the top four, led by “The Union” starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry. The secret agent comedy-thriller is #1 for the second week, uncommon among Netflix Originals.

VOD charts also saw Neon’s low-budget sleeper success “Longlegs” place third at both sites. This came after six weeks of strong theatrical success, with $73 million so far.

Unusually, iTunes and Fandango shared the same top four films. “Twisters” (Universal), last week’s #1, is second at both, while “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) is fourth.

Steven Soderbergh rarely ever misses. The director almost retired some time back with the intention of 2013's "Behind the Candelabra" being the final film he would helm, but thankfully, that did not come to pass. The script for "Logan Lucky" intrigued Soderbergh so much that he came out of retirement to direct it, and since then, he has been steadily involved in several projects over the years, including the upcoming "Presence," which emerges as a brilliant entry in the supernatural horror genre. The 2017 heist-comedy, "Logan Lucky," is quite underrated when mapped against the rest of Soderbergh's filmography, but the film has made somewhat of a comeback, as it is currently among Netflix's Top 10 movies in the U.S. (via FlixPatrol).

Tony McFarr, who was Chris Pratt’s stunt double in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and two of the “Jurassic World” movies, died on Monday. He was 47.

McFarr’s mother told TMZ that he died at his home outside of Orlando, Fla. No cause of death has been given. His death was reported on the website of the Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home in Merritt Island, Fla.

The stuntman performed in dozens of movies and shows, dating back to the early 2010s. He first doubled for Pratt on the 2015 film “Jurassic World” and followed that up with 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and 2018’s “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” He also performed Pratt’s stunts in the 2016 drama “Passengers.”

Kent Sanderson has been promoted to president of Bleecker Street, the indie studio behind “Logan Lucky” and “Captain Fantastic.” The veteran executive previously served as the company’s head of acquisitions and ancillary distribution. Sanderson has been with Bleecker Street, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary, since its inception in 2014.

In his previous role, he led both the curation of Bleecker’s film slate and the company’s home entertainment strategy, including co-founding and co-running home entertainment label Decal, which Bleecker operates as a joint-venture with Neon. In his new post, Sanderson will continue to report to Bleecker Street CEO Andrew Karpen.

The news comes in the wake of Pruitt Taylor Vince landing the role of Pa Kent, who is Martha’s husband.

Howell joins a list of those who’ve played Ma Kent on the big screen that includes Phyllis Thaxter in Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman, Eva Marie Saint in Bryan Singer’s 2006 Superman Returns, and Diane Lane in Zack Snyder’s 2013 Man of Steel.

Murder Party was the feature directorial debut of Jeremy Saulnier, who has gone on to direct films like the revenge thriller Blue Ruin, the neo-Nazi horror film Green Room, and the mystery thriller Hold the Dark, as well as episodes of True Detective season 3. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are set to star in a prequel to the iconic heist film ‘Oceans 11’, which will explore the origins of the original crew and their romantic entanglements in the 1960s. The film, tentatively titled ‘Oceans 10’, is still in development and has not been officially announced by Warner Bros., but producer Josey McNamara has confirmed that the project is alive and well.

“I think we’re just trying to do right by the franchise. I’m excited for people to experience it when it’s ready,” McNamara said in an interview with Collider. He added that the script, written by Olivia Milch, is “fantastic” and that the film will have a “different tone” from the previous ‘Oceans’ movies, which were directed by Steven Soderbergh and starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and others.

Steven Soderbergh starts things off with an apology. His assistant is on vacation, and he was certain that our interview was scheduled to start a full 15 minutes after it was supposed to commence. That resulted in a mad scramble of calls and text messages to track down the filmmaker.

Though you’ll undoubtedly forget many times while you’re watching it, Prime Video’s music drama Daisy Jones & The Six is not based on a true story. At least, not really. Adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel of the same name, this series about the titular band was inspired by the real life drama of classic ’70s rock group Fleetwood Mac.

While Fleetwood Mac is very much real (and great!), Daisy Jones & The Six is not real (though also great!). Still, that does not make the Behind the Music-esque drama they experience in these 10 episodes feel any less real.
