The Hateful Straights: Mills Finds Bigots in the Backwoods in Exploitation Effort

One of the many silver linings of genre filmmaking is the powerful ability of subtext. However, there’s a formidable power in siphoning the subtext to the foreground in compelling ways, like The Stepford Wives (1975) or Get Out (2017), which formulate their own niche of persuasively terrifying social issue horror. However, there’s also a fine line between eloquence and exploitation, and the latest film from Canadian filmmaker Pat Mills, The Retreat, gravitates towards the latter. It’s a far cry from Mills’ previous output, who heretofore reveled in showcasing teen pariahs embracing their freak flags in intriguing ways, such as his 2014 standalone debut Guidance (read review) and 2017’s Don’t Talk to Irene (2017).…...

We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Boys returning with its second season, but based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks as if we’re in for another wild ride. One that may even top the first run of the show, which was one of the best things that we’d seen on television in a long time.

An election season is fast-approaching in the U.S. So for its new releases in September 2020, Amazon Prime is bringing back one of its most political shows.

The Boys season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4. Though the show on its face is a superhero story, viewers of season 1 will know it’s really about America’s troubling embrace of entertainment with fascism. Sounds fun and not at all terrifying right before a presidential election!

That’s not the only bleak Amazon original on the schedule for September. British TV adaptation Utopia arrives on September 25. This Gillian Flynn-produced series follows fans of a comic book who believe it predicts…world-ending pandemics. Darn it. Amazon’s only original film this month is a…documentary about voter suppression from Liz Garbus called All In: The Fight for Democracy. Yikes.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired the U.S. rights to the indie comedy Don't Talk to Irene, which features Thelma and Louise star Geena Davis.

Gravitas Ventures plans to release the indie that had a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD on March 2, 2018. Pat Mills' sophomore feature comedy from Edyson Entertainment also stars newcomer Michelle McLeod, Scott Thompson, the late Bruce Gray and Anastasia Phillips.

The 2018 edition of the Glasgow Film Festival (Feb 21 – March 4) revealed its full line-up this evening, including Scottish premieres of You Were Never Really Here, Submergence and In The Fade.

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan will world premiere her debut feature as a director, The Party’s Just Beginning, in Glasgow. Gillan was also recently announced as the patron of the festival’s expanding youth strand.

As previously reported, the festival will open with a screening of Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animation Isle Of Dogs.

In total, the festival will host 13 world and European premieres, 77 UK premieres and 52 Scottish premieres.

Further world premieres include Felipe Bustos Sierra’s Nae Pasaran, a Scottish made documentary that will close their year’s festival, Douglas King’s feature debut Super November, and Donal O’Ceilleachair’s documentary The Camino Voyage.
