The movie revolves around the Bellas going on a USO tour. During the movie's release, Adam Devine, whose character Bumper isn't in this movie, was actually on a USO tour to support the troops.

This and their surnames (Smith and Jones) seems to have been done in keeping with the in-joke about both characters' irrelevance, a running gag since the first movie. There is no Middleton in New Jersey, but a township called Middletown.
