The BBC is to triple its investment in UK-made animation for 7-to-12 year olds over the coming years as kids chief Patricia Hidalgo talks up the potential for the corporation to produce the next generation of global hits.
The BBC’s goal is to air three UK original animations for this older children’s audience per year, up from just one as it currently stands.
Addressing the Manchester Animation Festival this morning, former Turner Emea kids boss Hidalgo described the move as a “significant increase,” which comes as the BBC delivers on “great content for this older target” in the factual-entertainment, drama and comedy spaces.
Additional animations will start appearing in around 18 months and in the meantime the BBC is looking to increase its animation mix through acquisitions and pre-buys. Last year’s content budget for older-skewing kids channel Cbbc was £58M ($78M), with £25M ($33.8M) spent on younger-skewing CBeebies.

To understand the ambition, talent and artistry of the Irish animation industry, it’s worth watching Cartoon Saloon’s “Wolfwalkers” on Apple TV Plus.
A hand-drawn adventure set in 1650s Ireland, “Wolfwalkers” was nominated for an Oscar this week. It’s the latest in a string of Oscar nominations for Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon, which has previously been nominated for “The Breadwinner” in 2017, “Song of the Sea” in 2015, and “The Secret of Kells” in 2010, and short animation film “Late Afternoon” in 2019.
The Irish animation sector has flourished in recent years, earning a strong reputation for storytelling and visual artistry. Animation now represents around 50% of all audiovisual production spending in the country, according to Moe Honan, chair of industry body Animation Ireland, and CEO of Galway-based animation studio Moetion Films.
Honan says Animation Ireland has more than 33 member companies, directly employing around 2,000 people, as well as many freelancers. She stresses the diverse nature of the studios,...

When “Moana” left Netflix on Dec. 20, parents of little kids let out a collective wail of despair on Twitter and Facebook parenting groups everywhere. The phrase “ruined Christmas” was pointedly used in the streamer’s direction — sometimes facetiously, sometimes with the reflected ire of a preschooler who had awakened one morning to find her favorite movie unexpectedly wiped from the universe.
Overly dramatic? Yes. But even more dramatic is the fight for the next generation of television viewers, primed to expect their shows on demand and unlikely to have ever set eyes on a TV listing grid. As families consider which platforms best fulfill their television desires, the industry’s thirst for younger eyeballs (and parental cash) means that the forthcoming direct-to-consumer entertainment turf war is bound to draw blood from the wholesome realm of children’s programming.
In the linear world, viewership figures at ad-supported kid-oriented cable networks are pretty grim.

CBS Corp. delivered strong second quarter earnings on Thursday, posting top and bottom line growth as the company prepares for the transformation of a merger with its corporate sibling Viacom.
CBS reported what it described as record second quarter revenue of $3.81 billion, up 10% from the comparable quarter last year. Operating income was up 5% to $695 million. Net earnings climbed 10% to $440 million while adjusted earnings per share hit $1.16, up 4%. CBS’ numbers met or beat Wall Street analysts expectations for the quarter.

Ianniello disclosed during CBS’ conference call with analysts that CBS All Access will launch a kids programming section later this year with 1,000 hours of programming.

On the morning of September 5th, Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach walked into Auerbach’s Nashville studio, picked up their instruments and became the Black Keys again. By season’s end, they had finished their ninth album, the self-produced “Let’s Rock” (yes, that’s really the title). As usual, they created the entire album’s worth of songs from scratch in the studio, with nothing written in advance and very little discussion. It had been five years since they recorded together, but that didn’t seem to matter at all.

Karen O and Danger Mouse enlisted filmmaker Spike Jonze to direct a stunning performance of their new track “Woman” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday.

Karen O and Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton started making noise around the same time, with a similar irreverent zest. In the early 2000s, when Karen was rampaging around the world with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, rocking fishnets-and-lipstick classics like “Maps” and “Y Control,” Danger Mouse rewrote the rulebook with his pioneering Jay-z/Beatles mash-up, The Grey Album. Karen O and Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton released “Turn the Light” ahead of their collaborative album, Lux Prima (out March 15th). The song features an upbeat groove that pairs Karen O singing about “starry, starry nights” in silky falsetto with Burton’s minimalist synth-and-bass sound. Astute listeners will recognize that funk throttle as a staple of Burton’s collaborative productions like Broken Bells, his project with Shins’ singer James Mercer.
O and Burton have both described their collaboration as an atmospheric experience — one that creates a world more than it creates a sound.

Broken Bells, the group featuring the Shins’ James Mercer and producer Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton, have shared their new song “Shelter,” the duo’s first new recording in four years.
Touted as the first time Broken Bells have “combined their unmistakable melodies, lyrics, vocals and singular composition style with samples,” the expressive track boasts Danger Mouse’s “deconstruction and reconstruction of sampled beats” alongside Mercer’s knack for catchy hooks and incisive lyrics.
On the duo’s Instagram, Mercer and Danger Mouse posted photos of their summertime recording sessions together.

Grandaddy have unveiled their sprawling new song “Bison on the Plains,” the band’s first new music since releasing their reunion album Last Place in March 2017.
The synth-heavy song was inspired by the Cars’ 1984 single “Drive,” frontman Jason Lytle said in a statement. “Setting out with the intent of replicating the ‘feel and vibe’ of the song ‘Drive’ which is one of my favorite Cars songs …I got a little of the way into “Bison on the Plains” (Botp) and realized I had failed,” Lytle said.

Danger Mouse: The Danger Games is a port of a (free) mobile game to the Nintendo Switch and the fact that, after paying for the game, the mobile games’ original paywall is still in effect feels like a poke in the eye and whilst some aspects of the game are fun, the repetitiveness and cynicism of the design eats away at the limited fun factor that exists.
I’m always dubious about mobile ports as the vast majority of the games are designed to pass time with a limited control scheme and design sensibilities that don’t translate well onto consoles. The case with Danger Mouse is that it’s clearly designed primarily for minute-long online races that may be a basic time-killer on a phone but just aren’t interesting when ported anywhere else.
The ‘Danger Games’ here are a series of races that are viewed from a third-person perspective.

Minnie The Minx, the classic British comic book character, is to get her first starring TV role after Beano Studios teamed up with British production company Lime Pictures to develop a live-action comedy drama.
Minnie, whose real name is Hermione Makepeace, was one of the key characters in the Beano comic books, which starred Dennis The Menace, and first appeared in 1953.
Beano Studios and All3Media-backed Lime, which is behind Netflix’s teen horse drama Free Rein, are developing The Magnificent Misadventures of Minnie, aimed at kids aged between 8 and 12. The scripts are being developed by Julie Bower, creator of Cbbc’s So Awkward and writer on Disney’s Evermore Chronicles and Danger Mouse writer Danielle Ward.
It will feature the rebellious 13-year old heroine, a budding comic book artist herself, who together with her best friends Becky and Same tackle the trudgery of school and leave a trail of chaos in their wake.

Ever wonder what it would be like if Gandhi met up with Benjamin Franklin? Or if Galileo sat down for a chat with Queen Elizabeth? What about a dance-off between Joan of Arc and Albert Einstein?
All those things and more can be found on Netflix’s new kids and family series “The Who Was? Show,” which launched on the streaming service on Friday.
The sketch comedy series is based on the popular “Who Was?” children’s books published by Penguin Random House and features a who’s who of comedy producers and writers who can boast 900 Emmys between them, according to executive producer-showrunner Richard Korson and writer-executive producer Brian McCann (“Conan”), who recently chatted with Variety about the silly, yet slyly educational show.

Arguably horror is the most symbolic of film genres, as it relies heavily on senses and imagery to convey suspense and the moral message of the story. The mark of successful horror films as seen in the last few years such as The Babadook, Don’t Breathe, and this year’s sensation Get Out, have managed to balance tone and exposition well – paving the path for more sophisticated endeavours. Sadly, Caradog W. James’ Don’t Knock Twice seems to be taking backward steps down that path, in what can only be described as a juvenile and slapdash piece of cinema.
The film entails American sculptor Jess (Katee Sackhoff), reuniting with her teenage daughter Chloe (Lucy Boynton) who’s living in a foster home. Jess invites Chloe to come live with her but distraught at her mother’s abandonment, the latter refuses. That night Chloe and her boyfriend Danny...

The first episode of Red Dwarf XI is an ideal series opener in which everyone gets a moment in the spotlight...
This review contains spoilers.
11.1 Twentica
The history of Red Dwarf is a series of jarring transitions, with the series evolving over the years to fit in with its surroundings (and, of course, its budget). The sprawling sci-fi of Red Dwarf V was different to the claustrophobia of Red Dwarf VI and VII, which underwent a massive transformation into the populated world and broader humour of Red Dwarf VIII, at which point the show went off air until the super low-budget real-world antics of Back to Earth… You get the idea.
The shift from Red Dwarf X to Red Dwarf XI echoes the biggest (and still the most divisive) of these regenerations - that of Red Dwarf II to Red Dwarf III. When Red Dwarf X...

Cbbc has ordered another pile of Danger Mouse episodes, with Alexander Armstrong and Kevin Eldon set to return...
Cbbc’s Danger Mouse revamp has been renewed for a second series. You’d expect the show’s impressive voice cast – including Alexander Armstrong, Kevin Eldon, Dave Lamb, Stephen Fry and Lena Headey – to assemble once again.
Alexander Armstrong is definitely coming back, and he had this to say about the renewal:
“I have had enormous fun playing Danger Mouse, whose style, bravery and wit I greatly admire. I am almost unbearably excited about what new magnificent missions and terrifying situations the writing team will come up with for Danger Mouse and Penfold in series two!”
Penfold himself, Mr Kevin Eldon, added this:
“It’s a funny old world. You get no series of Danger Mouse for 23 years and then two come along at once. All right, there’s been 18 months between them,...

"No threat is too small, no evil too great for this secret agent mouse and his sidekick! Villains: You've been warned.”
Netflix has released the first trailer for their upcoming animated action series, Danger Mouse. This is a remake of the original cartoon that aired in the UK from 1981 to 1992. I remember watching a few episodes of that show, but I was more into Mighty Mouse since that’s what was airing in the Us when I was growing up. The new Danger Mouse series updates the world’s greatest super spy rodent for the 21st century, and it looks like a lot of fun.

Brian Blessed and Richard Ayoade join the cast of Danger Mouse for its new Christmas Special, a festive classic in the making...
When we reviewed the pilot for the revived Danger Mouse back in September, it seemed like a promising start to the new series, albeit not one without issues: it was a bit too self-aware and the voices would take some getting used to. Fifteen episodes later, the team are unleashing Danger Mouse’s first-ever Christmas special upon the world, and we’re pleased to report that it’s set to go down in the grand pantheon of TV Christmas specials as a classic.
Running at twice the length of a regular episode, The Snowman Cometh features guest star Richard Ayoade as the titular Snowman, one of Danger Mouse’s least fearsome nemeses, whose initial attack on London is met with derision from rodent superspies and members of the public alike.

Update: Sony Pictures has reached out to inform us that the report picked up The Tracking Board is inaccurate, and there is no Danger Mouse movie in development at this time.
Original Story: It’s incredible what a small-screen revival can do for a dormant property. Take Danger Mouse, for instance. Fresh off its return to the airwaves last month – boasting a voice cast comprised of Alexander Armstrong, Kevin Eldon and Stephen Fry – The Tracking Board now reports that Sony and StudioCanal are keen on propelling the popular British spy series onto the big screen.
Both studios are said to be in the early stages of planning with Neal Mortiz and Toby Ascher attached to produce the diminutive adaptation. Rather appropriately, plot details are being locked away behind closed doors, though the outlet suggests the project could serve as an origin tale of sorts, documenting the day-to-day operations of the...

Sony Pictures has picked up classic British cartoon "Danger Mouse" with plans to turn it into an animated feature which Original Film, Fremantle Media and Neal Mortiz will produce.
The Tracking Board reports that the film could well be an origin story about the world's best secret agent, a white mouse with an eye patch, and his timid assistant Penfold. The cartoon effectively served as a kind of Bond spoof, with Danger Mouse often facing his evil toad enemy Baron Silas von Greenback.
The series ran from 1981 to 1992 and was recently rebooted and relaunched on Cbbc in the UK with the likes of Alexander Armstrong, Stephen Fry, Lena Headey and John Oliver lending their voices to the series. That reboot will screen on Netflix U.S. starting in the Spring.

Bringing back Danger Mouse is a big deal - and the stars of Cbbc's new revamp have promised they won't mess it up.
The team behind the new show were "respectful" of the classic '80s animation, said Kevin Eldon - who voices Dm's assistant Penfold.
"People are possessive of stuff that belongs to their childhood, and you can understand that," he said. "You don't want to it be 'Scrappy Doo' - coming back and doing a horrible thing to the memory of something brilliant.
"I think that the people involved in this were respectful of the original. It has hauled itself into the 21st century, but it hasn't done it at the expense of the original's spirit.
"The scripts were just great - so imaginative, and with the same anarchic spirit as the original."

See Alexander Armstrong and Kevin Eldon voice Danger Mouse and Penfold in this first look at the new series' theme song...
"The fate of the entire galaxy rests in the hands of our greatest, most beloved, heroes..."
Fresh on the tail of the latest casting news for Cbbc's new Danger Mouse series (Lena Headey and John Oliver are the latest to join up) comes this first-look teaser trailer of the revamped show.
The action starts following a Star Wars episode VII parody ("Penfold, we're home!"), and it's looking good. From what little we see of them, Alexander Armstrong and Kevin Eldon are great choices for the roles of Dm and Penfold, the original theme song is intact, and so, by the looks of this brief teaser, is the sense of humour.

Game Of Thrones star Lena Headey and The Daily Show's John Oliver have joined the Danger Mouse telly reboot cast...
While I never could have predicted this news story, I'm very glad to be passing it on - Lena Headey (Game Of Thrones' Cersei Lannister) and John Oliver (The Daily Show's hilarious co-host, formerly seen on Community) have both signed up for roles in the upcoming Danger Mouse reboot.
Lena Headey will play Us Secret Agent Jeopardy Mouse, “a super-proficient American, female version of Danger Mouse” who has been described as “the unseen star of the Us Secret Service" who completes her missions “with the minimum of fuss.”
Said Headey of the role: “I wanted to do [Danger Mouse] because it was pure nostalgia for me. I have children now and it’s just a treat to be involved in something that you loved as a kid and be able to share it.

Netflix are making a grab for the kids market, adding Inspector Gadget, Danger Mouse and more to their streaming library…
As Netflix continue to make waves in the world of entertainment, with 2015 promising more original content than ever, kids TV is the next target in their sights.
The headline here is that Netflix has nabbed the rights to distribute the Boomerang network's new Inspector Gadget animated series, and will also do the same for Cbbc’s new Danger Mouse (with Alexander Armstrong and Stephen Fry). Danger Mouse isn’t expected until spring 2016, but Inspector Gadget (which will serve as a CGI sequel to the classic cartoon) will air on Netflix this March, we’re told. It's actually already started on Boomerang.
It's also announced Some Assembly Required, a summer comedy based on a 14-year-old who becomes the owner of a toy company, and Bottersnikes & Gumbles based on the Australian book...
