"Welcome to the MCU. You're joining at a bit of a low point," says the Merc with the Mouth aka Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) in "Deadpool & Wolverine." He's not wrong. Most would agree the Marvel Cinematic Universe suffered a drop-off in quality in the aftermath of "Avengers: Endgame," with some of the franchise's Disney+ series, in particular, being met with immense criticism. Admittedly, some of that stemmed from a toxic fandom that just couldn't abide by, say, the visual of Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) twerking with Megan Thee Stallion in "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law." However, the lowest rated MCU Disney+ show on Rotten Tomatoes is one that just about everyone agrees would be better forgotten.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been around and going strong for nearly two decades now, and Marvel Studios has definitely enjoyed more hits than misses across its movie and TV slate. However, when it comes to the MCU, that’s not to say that every project has been a hit and stuck the landing.

The Eternals and Inhumans are two prime examples of ambitious ideas that didn’t quite resonate with audiences and weren’t exactly the slam dunks Marvel hoped they would be.

As brilliant as Eternals was, the film failed to captivate audiences in the way Marvel intended with many complaining about the film being too overly crowded and not the introduction of the characters not really making sense within the broader MCU stories. Meanwhile, Marvel’s Inhumans series landed with more of a whimper than a bang, falling short of expectations and being panned by fans and critics alike.

Jac Schaeffer's 2024 TV series "Agatha All Along" stars Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, a wicked sorceress who serves as a nemesis to the Scarlet Witch. The show is a direct spinoff of 2021's "WandaVision," where the character was first introduced. The new series saw Agatha forming a new coven of witches so that they along with her new teenage sidekick Teen (Joe Locke) could face the trials of the Witches' Road, a mysterious process that grants its survivors any wish they want. Agatha lost her witch powers, so she very much would like to have them back. The series also featured Aubrey Plaza as the Rio Vidal aka Death (who was Agatha's ex-girlfriend), as well as living legend, Patti LuPone, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, and Debra Jo Rupp.

The D23 Marvel Studios panel in Brazil has wrapped up. During the event, we got a lot of new information about the MCU’s future, including sneak peeks at upcoming movies and animated shows. A special look at Thunderbolts* was released, along with a new trailer for Captain America: Brave New World.

Exclusive: Industry‘s Ken Leung has signed with Paradigm for representation in all areas.

The news comes fresh on the heels of explosive Season 3 finale of the HBO finance drama, in which Leung’s rough-around-the-edges character Eric Tao sees his world turned upside down when the future of investment bank Pierpoint is called into question.

Industry has generated quite a bit of buzz this season, moving into HBO’s marquee Sunday night primetime window for the first time. As was the hope, the series has increased its visibility to attract its best audiences ever. Industry has already been renewed for Season 4.

Leung will next be seen in Joker: Folie À Deux, where he reunites with Industry co-star Harry Lawtey. He also recently shot a leading role in Justin Lin’s upcoming film Last Days, based on the story John Allen Chau.

Leung has expansive credits in both film and television.

Genre cinema fans are surely familiar with the name Mercedes Bryce Morgan, whose one-two punch of Fixation and Spoonful of Sugar took the festival circuit by storm in 2022. This year, her third feature, Bone Lake, brought her back to Fantastic Fest for its world premiere. Marvel Studios' Blade recently lost a second director in Yann Demange, prompting a fresh round of speculation about why Kevin Feige and company simply can't get this long-awaited movie - first announced in 2019 - into theaters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both sides are to have grown frustrated with Blade's prolonged development process, with the Daywalker himself, Mahershala Ali, said to be "increasingly frustrated" with the situation.

The trade explains that he handpicked Demange after Bassam Tariq walked away from Blade in September 2022. At the time, the movie had been in pre-production and was gearing up to start shooting two months later.

Marvel Studios decided Tariq wasn't a good fit and, after presenting Ali with a list of possible directors, executives were surprised when the Oscar-winner "conducted his own search after having concerns that the list largely featured filmmakers who were untested at the big studio level."

Marvel’s ‘Multiverse Saga’ is all set to end with the climactic cinematic event Avengers: Secret Wars. Even though the film is a long way ahead, the MCU has probably begun to set up the ultimate battle between the Avengers and the multiversal threat. While the film will definitely see many of the superheroes established from the beginning of the MCU make an appearance, one group that will not be seen is the Inhumans. While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn't include as many surprises as some fans had hoped for, one of the biggest saw Anson Mount reprise his Inhumans role as Black Bolt.

Decked out in a comic-accurate costume, we finally saw the extent of his powers when his voice reduced Earth-838's Doctor Strange to little more than a pile of dust. However, after he crossed paths with Earth-616's Scarlet Witch, his head was blown up from the inside out.

Whether we'll see more of the Inhumans in the MCU remains to be seen. Former Marvel Entertainment Chairman Isaac Perlmutter tried to force Kevin Feige into making a movie featuring the characters and, when he refused, we ended up with the disastrous Marvel Television series.

"Spider-Man: Far from Home," released in July of 2019, was the 23rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and served as a victory lap for the franchise following the release of "Avengers: Endgame" -- one of the biggest films of all time -- the previous May. That was 23 films in 11 years, released at a pretty steady -- but mostly tolerable -- clip. From 2008 to 2016, Marvel Studios released two films every year. From 2017 to 2019, it upped its output to three a year. The frantic release schedule, paired with carefully curated press releases, whipped fans into a frenzy of eternal anticipation. In 2019, it seemed like the MCU would never end.

2020 saw no MCU theatrical releases thanks to Covid. The release schedule was thrown way off and the cycle of anticipation was interrupted. To adjust, Marvel began dumping a lot of its resources into McU-connected streaming shows starting with "WandaVision" in January 2021. The many...

Yesterday evening, the news broke that Disney has resurrected the "Marvel Television" banner for future live-action TV shows on Disney+. The hope is that this will allow that division to focus on streaming, while Marvel Studios concentrates on the movies. 

It's all part of a plan to get back to quality over quantity after a rocky few years. However, there's a big difference between this Marvel Television and the one which launched in 2010 and was ultimately shuttered in 2019 when Kevin Feige took charge. 

The news got us thinking about the original Marvel Television's stint and the many mistakes made under the man in charge, Jeph Loeb. In this feature, we take a look back at their biggest blunders and what Marvel Studios can learn from them.

The downside to the now-inoperative Marvel Television was that its offerings were exhaustively inconsistent in quality. Would you get a mature, nuanced examination of topics like systemic corruption, religious faith, and personal trauma like in "Daredevil"? Or would you get a clumsy mashup of "Succession"-style dynasty drama and white savior tropes like in "Iron Fist"? One could never be too sure. But while the lows were especially low, the highs also tended to be higher than the Marvel Cinematic Universe's films.

Funnily enough, that trend has only continued since Marvel Television was restructured and folded into Marvel Studios. The McU's Disney+ shows have been all over the board so far, with the added wrinkle that most of them are woven deeper into the tapestry of the franchise's greater mythology and, as such, are harder for the McU's movies to ignore -- as we saw when "The Marvels" had to...

Kevin Feige has been the mastermind of the MCU for more than 10 years now and has created the most commercially successful franchise in the history of cinema. Creating an interconnected universe over multiple films is an ambitious idea that many have tried and failed. But Feige’s vision and conviction made it possible.

Deadpool 3 has its official title: Deadpool & Wolverine. The first teaser trailer for the movie hit the internet during Super Bowl Lviii, giving superhero film fans their first glimpse at the wackiness it will offer.

One of the biggest reveals from the trailer was confirmation of the longstanding rumor that the Time Variance Authority would appear in the movie. The Time Variance Authority (or Tva for short) is the temporal enforcement organization seen in the Disney+ Loki series, which ensures time flows as it should in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Most people assume Deadpool and Wolverine will be tasked with killing rogue variants of live-action Marvel characters who deviated from the Sacred Timeline. However, a new theory by the YouTube channel New Rockstars suggests they’ll be tasked with fixing the lousy writing and plot holes in various live-action Marvel Studios and Fox superhero films.

The first "Fantastic Four" comic book was published in November 1961, although it wasn't until issue #3 that the comics regularly came emblazoned with the superlative declaration "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine!" No one protested. The goal of the Fantastic Four was to tap into the natural enormity of comic book superhero stories: These were larger-than-life characters going on cosmic adventures and doing battle with planet-eating alien demigods. The very bodies of the titular Four were reminiscent of the four elements: One was made of stone, one was made of fire, one had a liquid-like body, and one was invisible like air. 

And yet, through the melodramatic opera of their adventures, the Fantastic Four had appealingly banal personal lives. Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman struggled to make their marriage work. The Human Torch and the Thing bickered constantly. The fact that the Human Torch was the Invisible Woman's brother only complicated matters.

In Sam Raimi's 2022 superhero film "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," the titular wizard (Benedict Cumberbatch) was able to skip across multiple dimensions merrily, thanks to the portal-creating superpowers of one America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez). Halfway through the film, Doctor Strange finds himself in a distant dimension, standing in the courtroom of the Illuminati, a superhero team that a parallel version of himself once belonged to. The Illuminati explains to the good Doctor that his alternate self has gone mad and needs to be executed, something they find might be true of the O.G. Doctor Strange as well. 

In an orgy of fan service, the Illuminati is made up of alternate Marvel characters culled from the history of Marvel media. Black Bolt (Anson Mount) is from the oft-forgotten TV series "Inhumans." There is an alternate Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch) as she was seen in 2019's "Captain Marvel.

Consider the opening scene from Marvel‘s Eternals. A teenage boy picks up a power drill and switches it on. As the whirring of the motor intensifies, the boy puts the drill to his ear and slowly, methodically. pushes it in.

What? You don’t remember that scene? Probably because it comes not from the 2021 movie Eternals, but from the 2015 television show Eternals. Moreover, it comes from a treatment from writer John Ridley, who had been hired by Marvel to develop the show, which never came to fruition.

Unlike Inhumans, another unpopular Jack Kirby tale about an anti-social group of superpowered weirdos, which was announced as a movie but became a TV series, Eternals began as a television program before it transitioned to a movie. A veteran of television, movies (winner of the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for 12 Years a Slave), and comics, Ridley seemed like the perfect person...

Reacher Season 2 star Serinda Swan shed some light on one complaint she had while filming the Amazon Prime Video show.

Ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off with 2008's "Iron Man," fans around the world have delighted at seeing some of their favorite comic book characters share the screen with one another in an ever-expanding world. For the most part, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and the countless writers, directors, actors, and others who've helped shape the MCU have delivered wildly entertaining shows and movies while also staying true to what made the source material so captivating. From classic plotlines to iconic panels to lesser-known characters, the McU's creators have done a stellar job of transposing some of the most beloved elements from the comic books to both the big and small screen.

Still, because of how different comics are from television and film, numerous changes have been made to adapt these larger-than-life characters to a live action medium. Some of these decisions make sense; what may work on...

In March of 2019, Disney finally sealed a deal to purchase 20th Century Fox for $71.3 billion. While some were wise enough to lament a lack of marketplace diversity and foresee the studio's shuttering of various sub-companies they had bought, fans of superhero cinema focused instead on how the merger would affect the already-huge Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fox owned the film rights to characters like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, and many fanboys immediately began speculating as to how Wolverine would come to meet Captain America, or how Mr. Fantastic would come to fight Rocket Raccoon. 

The Fantastic Four character of Reed Richards, a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic, already debuted in the MCU in Sam Raimi's 2022 film "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness." While traipsing through a parallel universe, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) met alternate versions of known Marvel characters.

Even though Agents of Shield and its loose connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe seem to be a thing of the past, there still might be a chance for fan favorite characters to return if the circumstances are right. We’ve already seen Anson Mount reprise his role as Black Bolt from the short-lived Inhumans series in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and thanks to the ever-expanding multiverse of the MCU it could be only a matter of time before we see other fan-favorite characters appear.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has rounded out the ensemble cast of Chief of War, its upcoming series starring, written and executive produced by Jason Momoa. Te Ao o Hinepehinga (Breakwater), newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods (NCIS: Hawai’i), Siua Ikale’o (NCIS: Hawai’i), Brandon Finn (Three Women), James Udom (The Sandman) Mainei Kinimaka (See) and Te Kohe Tuhaka (The Convert) are set as series regulars in the drama from Fifth Season and Chernin Entertainment. The Inhumans are one of the most popular and important groups within the Marvel continuity. It seemed like their presence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a surefire thing, considering the Mutants were unavailable to Marvel Studios in the early days. A favorite of head honcho Ike Perlmutter, an Inhumans movie was even announced; one of the few projects that the company would never make.

If you paid attention to the most recent San Diego Comic-Con, it would have been very apparent that the Inhumans were once again nowhere in sight. Although neither were the Mutants, who are widely considered to be replacements for the Kree-created characters moving forward. So, is there any kind of future for the royal family and the wider roster to show up once more on screen?

In a recent article in The Hollywood Reporter, writer Devin Grayson and artist J.G. Jones described the insidious battle they had to fight with the lawyers and contract writers at Marvel in order to be paid for the film rights to a character they had created. The character, Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh) first appeared in "Inhumans" #5 in March of 1999, when she had adopted the mantle of Black Widow from Natasha Romanoff (played in the movies by Scarlett Johansson). “The is no normal,” Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) says in the finale of Ms. Marvel. That turns out to be an understatement, as the true extent of her powers is revealed to her in the final minutes of the series.

The six-episode Disney+ series, led by head writer Bisha K. Ali and directing team, Adil & Bilall, made some significant changes to the character’s mythos, while still retaining the core of who Kamala Khan is — “good is not a thing you are. It’s a thing you do.”

The season finale of "Ms. Marvel" is packed with big showdowns and equally big revelations, but one of the most important moments of all is hidden away in a single bit of dialogue. Following the finale, the question on everyone's mind is: is Kamala Khan actually a member of the X-Men?

The reveal comes near the end of the finale, after the final battle has wrapped up. Bruno pulls Kamala aside to give her an update that throws a new wrinkle into the mystery behind her powers. He's taken a closer look at her DNA, and while her family connection still plays a role in her access to superpowers, it seems like her particular abilities are linked to something else, which he calls "a mutation." Kamala brushes it off as "just another label," but sharp-eared viewers will recognize the music that plays over his line: the theme music from the '90s animated "X-Men" series.

Well, it finally happened! While they didn’t actually say the word “mutant” we now have our first, undeniable, canonical mutant in the MCU, and it’s Kamala Khan. But wait, let’s back up for a moment…

Throughout Ms. Marvel, there have been a series of mysteries surrounding Kamala’s powers. At first, the show wanted us to believe that the bangle was the source of her light-based powers. But then it was revealed that because of Kamala’s ties to the Clandestine, and their connection to the Noor Dimension, that it was her lineage that allowed her to channel that power via the bangle. In other words, Kamala’s powers were inborn to some degree, and the bangle just helped her unlock them. But in the season finale on Disney+, Ms. Marvel episode 6 revealed that there’s something else behind Kamala’s power,...

The season finale of “Ms. Marvel” ended, per Marvel Cinematic Universe tradition, with a post-credits scene setting up a future project.

But as much fun as the brief moment was (and yes we’ll talk about it more below) it was vastly overshadowed by the episode’s final scene proper, which contained a huge reveal so important to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we’re honestly surprised this wasn’t the post-credit scene instead.

Literally, it changes everything for Kamala — even more than learning she’s part-Djinn did — and just as important, also seems to set up how Marvel is going to finally introduce, uh, a flurry of X-related puns into the MCU.
