Dead Space Downfall (2008) is an animated prequel film to the best selling video game Dead Space which was also released in 2008.
The Dead Space video game is about a space vessel engineer named Isaac Clarke who is sent into space to investigate a strange distress signal coming from a planet cracker vessel named the Ishimura. All communications aboard the Ishimura have been disabled and the ship floats through space aimlessly without power. Isaac boards the Ishimura only to discover a nightmare come true when he is attacked by hideously deformed creatures that use dead human bodies as parasitic hosts. Isaac makes his way slowly through the ship looking for a way off the ship as he uses multiple laser type weapons to kill the creatures via limb and bodily dismemberment.
Dead Space is an ultra violent video game that focuses on putting the player in dark, enclosed environments while facing off against various types of horrifying parasitic creatures that attempt to tear the player limb from limb. So how do you take an ultra violent video game like Dead Space and make it into a feature length animated movie?.
Dead Space Downfall tells the story of what happened aboard the Ishimura before engineer Isaac Clarke came aboard. Downfall starts with the discovery of an ancient artifact called the Marker that in the video game Isaac discovers is responsible for the creation of the creatures which also causes hallucinations and violent behaviour in anyone and anything within proximity to the Marker. The crew of the Ishimura are tasked with returning the Marker to earth so it can be examined by a group religious fanatics known as Unitologists who believe it to be the key to life beyond death. Things start to go badly aboard the Ishimura when the Marker is brought aboard and begins causing people to act violently towards themselves and others in order to provide dead bodies to be taken over by parasitic creatures created by the Marker. The security team aboard the Ishimura begin fighting back against the creatures in an attempt to eradicate the parasites and destroy the Marker before it reaches earth and infects the entire human race.
Downfalls story doesn't really add anything of worth to the Dead Space universe as it essentially tells us the story we already learned about while playing the Dead Space video game. This is a completely unnecessary prequel film in terms of backstory and plot. Unless you are one of the small percentage of people who watched Downfall first before playing the Dead Space game, but it is highly likely more people played the game first before watching this prequel movie seeing how the movie itself is based on the video game.
I do however recommend watching Dead Space Downfall despite the fact that it offers nothing new to the Dead Space universe in terms of backstory and lore. I highly recommend Downfall for it's high levels of blood, gore and ultra violence. I enjoyed watching this movie's characters getting butchered and then having their dead bodies transform into parasitic monsters who are then in turn shot and chopped up into pieces by laser saws.
I highly recommend giving Dead Space Downfall a chance even if you have no interest in the Dead Space video game franchise. Downfall can easily be watched on it's own without learning anything about the game. The high levels of ultra violence and gore make this movie a joy to watch for horror movie fans.
