Mr. 3 was more of a joke character than a serious villain in the One Piece anime, but David Dastmalchian's live-action version will come across as a far more severe threat to Monkey D. Luffy's Straw Hat Pirates. Netflix's adaptation teased Baroque Works during its first season, and the criminal organization is now set to play a major role in One Piece season 2. Led by Joe Manganiello's Crocodile, the show's contingent of Baroque Works villains will also include lower-ranking members like Mr. 9 (Daniel Lasker), Miss Valentine (Jazzara Jaslyn), Mr. 5 (Camrus Johnson), and of course, Dastmalchian's Mr. 3.
In the One Piece anime and manga series by Eiichiro Oda, Mr. 3 was never more than a minor antagonist. He briefly caused the Straw Hats some trouble on the island of Little Garden, but was soon beaten by Luffy without putting up much of a fight. Moreover, Mr. 3 was consistently portrayed as a comedy character,...

It is no secret that One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda has been putting in serious efforts behind the scenes when it comes to Netflix’s live action adaptation of his series.
From visiting the sets, to giving inputs in casting and story, Oda’s presence has been there in the production one way or the other.
At Jump Festa 2025, the author addressed the reasoning behind his commitment to the live-action adaptation of One Piece manga.
In his statement, he noted how fans often questioned him about why a live-action adaptation for the already well known series was necessary.
In response to that, Oda emphasized the desire to expand the series’ reach beyond the established manga and anime fanbase.
He saw the live-action series as part of a broader effort to bring One Piece into new spaces and reach an even larger audience.

The casting for Netflix’s One Piece live-action Season 2 has been met with controversy, with certain sections of the fanbase expressing dissatisfaction over the choices for key characters.
Criticism arose when it was revealed that Sendhil Ramamurthy and Charitra Chandran, both Indian-origin actors, would portray King Cobra, ruler of Alabasta, a kingdom inspired by ancient Egypt, and his daughter Nefertari Vivi.
This led to accusations of “Arab erasure” from some fans online.
Similarly, Lera Abova’s casting as Miss All Sunday also faced backlash due to her Russian heritage, with fans questioning the accuracy of her portrayal.
However, the latest message from One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, which came out on Nov 26, 2024, may quell these concerns.
After visiting the production set in Cape Town, South Africa, Oda shared his impressions of the cast and crew, offering his full endorsement of the casting decisions.

Production on the second season of Netflix's One Piece is in full swing, with filming currently underway in South Africa and the hype train building momentum. When last we saw Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his misfit crew of pirates, they were just setting out for the Grand Line in their quest to find the legendary One Piece treasure. Suffice to say, the anticipation is sky high for season 2.

The voyage of the Straw Hat pirates continues apace in South Africa, where the team behind Netflix's live-action One Piece series are hard at work on filming season 2. Based on the beloved and long-running manga by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is about a ragtag crew of pirates led by an unflappable young man named Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), who's on a quest to claim the mythical One Piece treasure and become king of the pirates. Live-action adaptations of manga and anime don't always turn out well, but One Piece's first season was the rare exception that pleased fans of the original source material, newcomers and critics alike.

Netflix is about two months into filming the second season of One Piece, according to Deadline. The first season of One Piece, based on the world-famous manga by Eiichiro Oda, was a big hit when it landed in 2023; bucking the trend of so many anime-to-live-action adaptations, it preserved the loopy elasticity of the animated original while still taking viewers on a rip-roaring journey that worked well in live-action. Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Romero) and Sanji (Taz Skylar) will all return as the crew travels into the dangerous Grand Line to fulfill Luffy's quest of finding the One Piece treasure and becoming king of the pirates.

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, recently shared insights into the production of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of his beloved manga.
According to Oda, his demands during the production of One Piece Live-action Season 2 has lead to challenges for the show’s team.
The author admitted that he has been involved in various aspects of production, including the script and the cast. And his hands-on approach has led to show’s team, including showrunner Matt Owens and executives at Netflix and Tomorrow Studios pulling out their hair in frustration.
“But whether it’s the script or the cast, I continue to insist on this or that, which makes Matt the showrunner go ‘Aaarrgh!’ and Netflix go ‘Noooo!’ and Tomorrow Studios goes ‘Whaaaat’ as they all pull their hairs out,” Oda commented.

Portgas D. Ace has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming second season of Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action series.
The announcement was made by Ace’s anime voice actor, Toshio Furukawa, during a fan interaction at Otakuthon
Furukawa, who has been voicing the character since his first appearance in episode 91 of the anime, also confirmed that he would reprise his role for the Japanese dub of the live-action series.
However, the actor portraying Ace in the series is yet to be officially announced.
While expressing excitement about the live-action project, Furukawa also shared his hope to continue voicing Ace in the One Piece anime remake produced by Wit Studio.
“I would love to continue voicing Ace in the remake, but I’m not sure if I will be invited to do so. However, I will at least be voicing Ace in the second season of the One Piece live-action Japanese dub.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios, and Becky Clements, President of the company, confirmed that Jamie Lee Curtis will not be joining the cast for One Piece Live-Action Season 2.
Despite Jamie’s keen interest in taking up the role of Doctor Kureha and excitement among fans, scheduling conflicts have prevented her from joining the series.
“She loves the show,” Clements stated. “She has too many films and TV shows that she’s going into production on, so our production dates aren’t going to work. She definitely wanted to do it but she’s got deals in first position, and it just became complicated.“
The production team has, however, reassured fans that the role of Kureha will still be brought to life in season 2, and that they have found a suitable replacement

Netflix’s runaway hit series One Piece sets sail for the anticipated season 2. The manga adaptation became such a success that Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis, who is a vet of the film industry, has been lobbying for a role in the next season as the character Doctor Kureha. Curtis, who recently started production on Freaky Friday 2, had taken to her social media with photoshopped images of her in the role, which even got the attention of the show’s official accounts.
While fans wait for that announcement, Variety has reported on the casting of several villains in the upcoming season. Daniel Lasker, known from Raised by Wolves, has been cast to play Mr. 9, Batwoman’s Camrus Johnson will be added to season 2 as Mr. 5, Jazzara Jaslyn, who can be seen in Warrior, will be playing Miss Valentine and Late Night With the Devil star David Dastmalchian will be portraying the role of Mr.
