Michael Hodgson is a British screenwriter and producer based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He qualified as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 1997 and practiced as a legal aid lawyer in Liverpool, UK, for 10 years. Whilst working as a lawyer in the day he wrote stories in the evening and was awarded a Masters Degree in Screenwriting at Liverpool John Moores University in 2000. He received the Lynda La Plante Screenwriting Prize in 1999 and was shortlisted for it in 2000. Based in Cambodia since 2007 he was Proconsul at the British Embassy, Cambodia for several years and was later General Counsel for a private equity fund, Leopard Capital. In recent years he worked as a consultant for the Cambodia Film Commission where he taught script writing to new writers. Prior to that he worked as a consultant for several years on a multi-million dollar construction project and was honored to be made a Commander of the Royal Order of Sahametrei, for services to the King and people of Cambodia in 2015*. Working with directors he has co-written a number of feature films which have screened at international film festivals across the globe as well as screening theatrically in various countries. Martial arts action-comedy, Jailbreak, is the first Cambodian film to be made available on Netflix apart from First They Killed My Father which was financed by Netflix. He is currently developing a number of projects.
