Tough as nails gran Ann Hunter isn’t about to go quietly in Karl R. Hearne’s revenge thriller The G. Known to her family as simply “The G”, Ann finds herself the victim of a legal guardianship scam that strips away her independence. But this aggrieved pensioner won’t stay a victim for long.
Inspired by the director’s own defiant grandmother and real cases of elder abuse, the film sees Ann and her ailing husband declared incapable and placed under the control of a crooked guardian. Soon their assets are taken, and they’re imprisoned in a grim care home. Yet Ann is no shrinking violet—she’s a hard-drinking, chain-smoking force of nature not accustomed to following anyone’s rules but her own.

The retribution visited upon exploiters of seniors by June Squibb in current sleeper hit “Thelma” has but Nerf-ball impact compared to the brass-knuckles style of vengeance practiced by Dale Dickey in “The G.” This considerably less cozy tale has the star as a vinegary veteran of hard living who turns out to be very much the wrong person for organized criminals to safely prey upon.
Canadian writer-director Karl R. Hearne’s second feature recalls much 1970s cinema in its emphasis on gritty character detail over suspense mechanics, resulting in an ostensible thriller that’s not very thrilling. Still, its storytelling has the same grim satisfaction that drives its heroine, a woman who’s not particularly ingratiating but is quite capable of doling out punishment to deserving parties.

Ann Hunter (Dale Dickey) loves her husband. She’s simply never been the caregiver type. That’s what drew him to her in the first place––leaving his wife to be with someone more his speed in their ruthless, take-no-prisoners attitude. Age comes for everyone, though. And it came for him fast. Unfortunately, they had already moved closer to his son in a place Ann couldn’t stand beyond the ability it afforded her to grow close with his granddaughter Emma (Romane Denis). So she filled the time with cigarettes and alcohol, alienated herself from everyone but the girl, and inevitably found herself being chastised by his doctor for neglecting the care his deteriorating body needs.
Whereas this development would generally give Ann the chance to turn things around or double-down on the self-destruction, Karl R. Hearne’s The G grabs hold and drags her towards a place of vengeance...

From writer, director Karl R. Hearne and 3Buck Productions, The G takes aim at how in today’s world the elderly can be routinely undervalued or taken advantage of. Dale Dickey (Hell or High Water, Winter’s Bone) takes the lead as the Ann Hunter aka ‘The G’, with a forceful performance and an unforgettable reminder of why you shouldn’t underestimate the elderly.
The G follows Ann and her husband, who retired to an unnamed American suburb 10 years ago to be near his family. But one day out of the blue they are snatched from their home by a corrupt legal guardian who believes they have hidden wealth.

“If you let your anger out, you live longer.” This growled assessment could be the life motto of Ann Hunter - or as her step-granddaughter Emma (Romane Denis) calls her “The G”. Played with a fierce intensity by Dale Dickey, who continues to shine in leading roles after years playing memorable character support, Ann is not your average gran.
Inspired by genuine real-life cases and the forceful personality of his own gran, Karl R Hearne’s taut and enjoyably complex thriller outlines a legal scam that sees Ann and her sick husband Chip (Greg Ellwand) branded incapable of looking after themselves and thrust into a care home under the instruction of a “guardian”, who is convinced that the couple have a secret stash of assets.
That Ann is essentially a tough-talking, permanently smoking, heavy drinking old boot, who hates most people but also cares deeply, and for, Chip, makes it.

[Note: With the film debuting on Shudder today, here’s a reposting of our review of horror comedy Slaxx, from its festival run last year]
Back in 2010 writer/director Quentin Dupieux brought forth Rubber on an unsuspecting genre audience. That film, about a tyre that killed people – not by running them over but by using telekinesis… I mention Rubber as it seems that film now has a cinematic sibling in Slaxx. A film about another homicidal inanimate object… a killer pair of jeans. Literally.
At Canadian Cotton Clothiers the flagship store staff is preparing for ‘Monday Madness’. For joining the range of supposedly organic, Gmo-free, fair-trade, ethically sourced tops and bottoms is the eagerly awaited new line of Super Shaper designer jeans – thermally activated denim that adapts to any body size.

"Are you afraid there's a killer... out there?" Shudder has unveiled a super bloody trailer for the Canadian horror comedy film titled Slaxx, about a possessed pair of jeans. This premiered at last year's Fantasia Film Festival, and we featured a promo trailer back then. "From the producers of Turbo Kid comes a new type of killer, a pair of jeans, in this raucous horror-comedy." When a possessed pair of jeans begins to kill the staff of a trendy clothing store, it is up to Libby, an idealistic young salesclerk and a hew hire, to stop its bloody rampage. Starring Romane Denis, Brett Donahue, Sehar Bhojani, Kenny Wong, Tianna Nori, and Hanneke Talbot. I was already looking forward to this last year with the first trailer, now I'm double sold! I'll take two pairs, please! This is an extra bloody, gory trailer so don't watch it with any kids around,...

When you choose to watch a film about a pair of jeans that kills people, you're probably not expecting great art. Whilst films of this sort can be fun, they usually have a single idea, throwaway characters and nothing to sustain the pace but weak jokes and gore. Prepare to be surprised. Slaxx delivers on the puns and the ridiculous kills, but it's a consistently smart, well-structured film with well-drawn characters, superb performances and a serious point to make.

Sexual power plays and slut-shaming are the central themes of “Slut in a Good Way,” director Sophie Lorain’s slight but amiable story of three straight teenage girls and their romantic lives. Shot in black and white and set mostly in a retail environment, the French-Canadian film gives off a “Clerks” vibe as the trio of protagonists slack off, bitch about pay, and talk about life and love.
Catherine Léger’s story starts off in a sex shop as 17-year-old Charlotte (Marguerite Bouchard) looks for a bustier that matches one she saw in one of her boyfriend’s porn clips. What she buys doesn’t have the desired effect, though it wouldn’t have mattered what she chose: Her boyfriend tells her that he’s gay. So she gets drunk on a playground with friends Mégane (Romane Denis) and Aube (Rose Adam), lamenting that he’s “perfect” and she loves him.

"He was all over me!" "Don't fall in love." Comedy Dynamics has debuted an official Us trailer for an indie comedy titled Slut in a Good Way, which is a provocative title and comes straight from the film. This is in French because it's from Quebec, with the original title as Charlotte a du fun, or Charlotte has fun. It's about a group of three wild, carefree teenage girls who decide to start working at a "Toy Depot" store that is also staffed by a group of attractive young men with whom they fool around with. "The film explores teenage girls' desires, the blurred lines between sex and friendship, and the unfair double standard imposed upon girls. It is a story of desire, self-censorship, and self-assertion." Starring Marguerite Bouchard, Romane Denis, Rose Adam, Alex Godbout, and Marylou Belugou. The colorful subtitles with the B&W footage is really creative and cool,...

Can skin tell the difference between love and desire? It’s an intriguing question Marie-Claire (Brigitte Poupart) can’t help but want to answer as a dermatology professor and lover of sex if only to supply a reprieve from the usual carcinoma studies her doctorate students tediously gravitate towards. She knows the young woman who presents it (Charlotte Aubin’s Sofia) is up to the challenge scholastically, but unsure experimentally. So Marie-Claire takes it upon herself to collect samples of her own cells before and after masturbating, those from a one-night stand (Paul Ahmarani’s Louis) she met at lunch one day, her husband Adam’s (Vincent Leclerc), and who knows how many others that she sleeps with too. It’s an increase in suitors that inevitably risks her personal and professional lives for science.
