Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd’s offbeat buddy comedy Friendship is set to arrive on digital streaming platforms later this month. The A24 release, which had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, opened in U.S. theaters on May 9th, 2025. Now, according to industry sources, the film is expected to hit VOD and digital platforms soon. Please note that A24 has not officially confirmed the date, and as always, release plans remain subject to change.

What is Friendship About?

Friendship marks the directorial debut of Andrew DeYoung, who also penned the screenplay. The film follows Craig (played by Tim Robinson), a suburban dad struggling with loneliness and a desire for deeper connection. When a new neighbor (Paul Rudd) moves in, Craig sees an opportunity to finally form an adult male friendship. But his efforts to bond quickly spiral into chaos, threatening not only his new relationship but also both their lives.

Oscar-winning movie producer Brian Grazer just revealed that he voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, despite past support for Democrats.

The 73-year-old producer, who is the uncle of It actor Jack Dylan Grazer, is featured in the new Fox Nation documentary series Art of the Surge.

Review: Confession time – this movie is my introduction to Tim Robinson. Sure, I’ve had folks name-drop his show I Think You Should Leave, and it’s always been on my list of stuff to check out. But, I walked into this more-or-less fresh, not knowing what to expect. What I got was one of the most cringe-inducing comedies I’ve ever seen – and I loved every second of it.

To be sure, this kind of humour isn’t for everyone. There were times while I was watching Friendship in the jam-packed screening that I’m sure I annoyed the people sitting next to me by how many times I sunk in my seat, covering my face with my hands and repeating “no, no, no” louder than I should. That’s the effect this had on me.

I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson has presented its titular creator and star to us in some of the most humiliating situations ever conceived. Characters he’s played have asked a restaurant server to intervene with a date he thinks is being too greedy with the toppings on a shared plate of nachos, tried to pull off a perm like an Irish setter’s ears, gotten disruptively dirty with questions on an “adult” ghost tour and of course, driven a hot dog-shaped car through a store window and loudly disclaimed responsibility — while wearing a hot dog costume.

If our era has a living avatar of social anxiety, Robinson is it. Now, with Friendship, Robinson is making his début as a feature-film headliner, and I have no higher compliment than to say he’s doing it in an extremely Tim Robinson way.

While Marvel's Thunderbolts* dominated headlines this weekend after topping the domestic box office charts for the second time in a row, an indie comedy was setting its own records. Released in just six New York and Los Angeles theaters, Friendship delivered the biggest debut for a limited release this year. The movie grossed over $451,000 in its first three days of release, delivering a per-theater average of $75,000. By comparison, Thunderbolts*' per-theater average for the weekend stood at $7,600.

The TIFF and SXSW film, which marks the debut of writer-director Andrew DeYoung, follows suburban dad Craig who falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor, but his attempts to make an adult male friend threaten to ruin both of their lives.

None of this will be news to those who’ve seen his uproarious series “I Think You Should Leave,” an absurd gem because of how he decisively turns otherwise ordinary social situations inside out. It’s no secret that Hollywood has been somewhat reluctant to dump resources into comedies that do not have a definitive genre slant, as these projects were among the first to be sent directly to streaming services during the fluctuation of distribution methods. Despite the emergence of more unique, diverse comedic voices than ever before in the history of cinema, a straightforward comedy isn’t enough to solidify a theatrical release; those coveted spots are typically reserved for films that appear to be definitely “cinematic” due to some moment of spectacle. While the time may have passed in which defining 21st-century comedic filmmakers like Adam McKay, the Farrelly brothers, David Gordon Green, or Paul Feig could generate buzz based solely on their name, it has encouraged the next generation of humorists to embrace their idiosyncrasies in hopes of standing out.

With Tim Robinson’s first starring film role in writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s A24 debut Friendship, the comedian hits every cringe note with assistance from Paul Rudd and Kate Mara.

The anxiety-inducing dark bromance stars Robinson as suburban family man Craig, who quickly develops a man crush on his new neighbor Austin (Rudd), a beloved local weatherman with his own rock band and an eclectic collection of ancient artifacts.

But his desperate attempts to impress his new pal only makes things disastrously awkward, reverberating through his life and impacting his marriage, job and entire wellbeing as he gets recurring nosebleeds throughout, which Robinson uses as a hilarious physical comedy device.

Writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s feature is set to hit theaters in May from A24 after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Midnight Madness roster. Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra and Billy Bryk round out the cast. Friendship centers on Craig (Robinson), whose attempts to connect with neighbor Austin (Rudd) run the risk of destroying both of their lives.

“Look, we had a couple of really nice hangs, but I think it best if we go our separate ways,” Rudd tells Robinson in the trailer. “I don’t wish to continue this friendship.”

Later, Robinson expresses his own frustrations. “You all accepted me way too fast,” he says. “You cant do that.”

Years before he directed Challengers, Luca Guadagnino created the coming-of-age miniseries We Are Who We Are, based on an original idea by writer Paolo Giordano. Fraser is a troubled teen who moves with his moms– played by Chloe Sevigny(American Psycho) and Alice Braga(Queen of the South)– to a military base in Italy. The longer runtime of a miniseries rather than a movie allows Guadagnino to give the world of We Are Who Are a sprawling, lived-in feel. We Are Who We Are is a well-observed portrayal of teen romance that rivals Challengers in its provocative relationship dynamics.
