One of this year’s funniest comedies, Friendship, is available to rent or purchase on Digital! You can rent the Tim Robinson-led film for $19.99 or buy the feature digitally for $24.99 on Prime Video, Apple TV, and other video-on-demand platforms. If physical media is your poison, you can pre-purchase the movie on Blu-ray and DVD at participating retailers. The physical version of Friendship does not have a release date, but A24 should let us know when it’s coming to shelves soon.
Written and directed by Andrew DeYoung, the film stars Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) in the story of a suburban dad (Robinson) who becomes hellbent on being BFFs with his charismatic new neighbor (Rudd). In his review, Chris Bumbray wrote that the film is, in addition to being very funny, “surprisingly nuanced about how hard it is to make friends as an adult male.

Forming meaningful platonic relationships can become complicated as we age, and Andrew DeYoung's directorial debut explored this to cringeworthy yet hilarious effect. With the signature humor of Tim Robinson and the always reliable assistance of Paul Rudd, their new A24 film became one of the best-reviewed comedies on Rotten Tomatoes this year and now, if you missed the opportunity to catch the film in theaters, you have the opportunity to experience the second-hand embarrassment from the comfort of your own home.
Friendship is now available on digital platforms to rent for $19.99 or to own for $24.99. Released by A24, the film enjoyed a pretty solid box office run that began as a limited engagement before going wide at the end of May. The film grossed $15.7 million, not bad for a movie that opened to a mere $444,759 and only played in 1,293 theaters at the widest point of its release. This week’s new indie comedy (a “micro-budgeted” flick squeezed in between two holiday-weekend studio “tentpoles”) explores the difficulty for adults to make new, meaningful connections in the hectic modern world. Now it’s not really a “rom-com” (though some may interpret it as such) about the meet-cute and “wooing” of two “camera-ready” twenty-somethings. This focuses on a duo in their early 40’s, though one of them was a recent People Magazine “Sexiest Man Alive”. It’s concerned with the convoluted, rocky road to acquiring a new pal, echoing a similar film from one of the actors, 2009’s I Love You Man. He’s considered a “mainstream” star while the other is the offbeat star/creator of several streaming cult comedies. So, one of the film’s big questions, and a “curiosity factor” is, will they somehow form a convincing and compelling Friendship?

Kate Mara is piling on the cringe comedy, one “weird” role at a time. The actress, who has deftly balanced indie features alongside the rare IP film and dramatic TV roles, gives a standout performance in viral hit “Friendship” alongside her onscreen husband Tim Robinson. It’s Mara’s dedication to being the straight-faced heroine who rediscovers her sexuality in a tunnel sewer system post-chemo that makes her character Tami’s outrageous behavior seem sane. Leave it to Mara to have her comedic debut be akin to a serious. dramatic performance — one that should be recognized come this awards season.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Josh Westcott for Wbgr-fm on May 15th, 2025, reviewing the new film “Friendship,” a sly and subtle buddy satire featuring Paul Rudd. In theaters on May 16th.
The film features Rudd as Austin, a new local TV weatherman in a wintry town, who moves into the same neighborhood as Craig (Tim Robinson). They strike up an awkward friendship, as Craig is dealing with his wife Tami (Kate Mara) and son Steven (Jack Dylan Grazer). Everything goes well initially, until Craig goes too far off the rails at a boys night gathering in Austin’s garage, and the weatherman wants nothing to do with him from then on. As Craig obsesses with his lost friendship, and spirals out of control, can anything bring him back from the brink?

Writer/director Andrew DeYoung’s dark comedy Friendship explores what happens when a budding bromance suddenly and disastrously comes to an end. Unfortunately, the film’s central bromance involves an incredibly unlikable character.
Craig Waterman has a decent life. Craig has a lovely wife, Tami, who has been cancer-free for a year now, a teenage son, Steven, and a job in technology that makes apps habit-forming. Yes, life is good.
When the mailman accidentally leaves a package for Craig’s new neighbor, Austin Carmichael, on his doorstep, Craig delivers it. This is the beginning of the end of Craig’s melancholy life. Austin befriends Craig unrealistically quickly, inviting him to have a beer the next night and calling him at work to leave early and go play hooky. Craig becomes enamored with Austin and develops a man crush on his neighbor,...

Plot: A suburban dad (Tim Robinson) becomes hellbent on being BFFs with his charismatic new neighbour (Paul Rudd).
Review: Confession time – this movie is my introduction to Tim Robinson. Sure, I’ve had folks name-drop his show I Think You Should Leave, and it’s always been on my list of stuff to check out. But, I walked into this more-or-less fresh, not knowing what to expect. What I got was one of the most cringe-inducing comedies I’ve ever seen – and I loved every second of it.
To be sure, this kind of humour isn’t for everyone. There were times while I was watching Friendship in the jam-packed screening that I’m sure I annoyed the people sitting next to me by how many times I sunk in my seat, covering my face with my hands and repeating “no, no, no” louder than I should. That’s the effect this had on me.

I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson has presented its titular creator and star to us in some of the most humiliating situations ever conceived. Characters he’s played have asked a restaurant server to intervene with a date he thinks is being too greedy with the toppings on a shared plate of nachos, tried to pull off a perm like an Irish setter’s ears, gotten disruptively dirty with questions on an “adult” ghost tour and of course, driven a hot dog-shaped car through a store window and loudly disclaimed responsibility — while wearing a hot dog costume.
If our era has a living avatar of social anxiety, Robinson is it. Now, with Friendship, Robinson is making his début as a feature-film headliner, and I have no higher compliment than to say he’s doing it in an extremely Tim Robinson way.

Friendship stars Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson in the lead roles; the movie premiered at last year's Toronto International Film Festival to excellent reviews, and is poised to emerge as a crowd-pleaser of the topmost order when it expands nationwide in a few weeks. Robinson plays a suburban dad whose quest to make a new adult friend leads him to his charismatic neighbor, played by Rudd. Their blossoming friendship threatens to derail their lives.

Are the guys Ok? So rarely do we get smart, subversive screen comedies about male friendship these days, and writer/director Andrew DeYoung’s feature directing debut “Friendship” turns the genre inside out.
Casting Paul Rudd as forlorn weatherman Austin Carmichael, neighbor to Tim Robinson’s anxiously neurotic Craig Waterman, in his A24 movie will immediately bring to mind another male friendship comedy, “I Love You, Man.” “Friendship” is like the dark mirror of John Hamburg’s 2009 cult classic, as the desperately friendless Craig strikes up (or even forces) a bond with the charismatic man across the street who keeps getting his packages. It proves ruinous for all, including Craig’s wife Tami (played by Kate Mara), who is obsessed with an ex and oh-so eager to get Craig out of the house.

Friendship, an upcoming A24 comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, is now regarded as one of the best films of the year thus far. Meet Craig Waterman, the world’s most socially awkward suburbanite. The fact that he’s played by Tim Robinson — co-creator of the brilliant sketch show-slash-meme-generator I Think You Should Leave — tells you everything you need to know from the jump. Writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s Friendship, featuring Tim Robinson in his first starring film role, boasts a strong supporting cast, including the likes of Paul Rudd, Kate Mara, and Jack Dylan Grazer. The movie's limited May 9 theatrical release, followed by a wide release on May 23, marks the second A24 flick to head to theaters in quick succession for Rudd, with Death of a Unicorn failing to capture audience imagination. Earning just $15 million at the global box office to date, which is only just enough to recoup the film's reported production budget, a 54% on review Rotten Tomatoes solidifies just how poorly Death of a Unicorn has performed.
Thankfully for Rudd, the upcoming Friendship will look to turn the tide on his A24 fortune, with early reviews of the movie on the aforementioned review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes seeing the film earn a huge 91% critic approval rating, almost double the score achieved by Death of a Unicorn.

Tim Robinson is a comedic wrecking ball. A uniquely expressive, endlessly chaotic and wholly unpredictable performer, there is truly no one like him. Set him loose in even the most familiar of scenarios and he’ll blow it all up in hilarious fashion. None of this will be news to those who’ve seen his uproarious series “I Think You Should Leave,” an absurd gem because of how he decisively turns otherwise ordinary social situations inside out. Still, even existing fans of Robinson’s work aren’t prepared for what he’s done with the showstopper of a film, “Friendship.”
Written and directed by Andrew DeYoung, who aligns perfectly with Robinson’s sensibilities, it’s a comedy about a guy who just wants his neighbor to be his friend. The man is Craig Waterman (Robinson) and he initially makes a connection with weatherman Austin Carmichael (Paul Rudd) after a package delivery mix-up brings them together.

“There’s no rules for male friendship!” exclaims Paul Rudd’s Peter Klaven in John Hamburg’s 2009 film I Love You, Man as he agonizes over the intricacies of platonic etiquette. Over a decade and a half later, the actor returns to find humor and insight across the same thematic terrain in writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s Friendship. This time, however, his character is the object of anxious affection rather than its originator.
Society, too, has shifted since 2009. Today, the epidemic of male loneliness is taken seriously as an “issue” to debate rather than merely a topic of discussion, though it’s also prone to being skewered by meme culture. Friendship lands somewhere in the middle of that spectrum, offering little in the way of answers or cures yet providing plenty of gut-busting laughs. While not necessarily a response to the times, it’s undeniably a product of them.

Summer technically doesn’t arrive for another seven weeks, but don’t tell Hollywood. This weekend, Marvel’s Thunderbolts* kicks off summer blockbuster season, the latest in a long line of Marvel releases to fire the starting gun on the industry’s most lucrative annual stretch, following in the footsteps of such movies like Iron Man and its sequels, the Avengers films through Avengers: Endgame, and the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
Between now and Labor Day, several significant films will arrive in theaters with something for everyone. The 2025 summer movie calendar features sequels such as Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning and Jurassic World Rebirth, superhero reboots including Superman and The Fantastic Four: The First Steps, and family-friendly animated projects like Bad Guys 2 and The Smurfs.

"Do you think if he's sees this he's gonna figure it out?" A24 has revealed a very strange promo featurette for the indie comedy titled Friendship, an awkward film about friends from filmmaker Andrew DeYoung. Ready to open in theaters in May with final release dates set. This first premiered at TIFF 2024 last fall in Toronto, and it also screened at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival in March. Suburban dad Craig falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor, as Craig's attempts to make an adult male friend threaten to ruin both of their lives. A24 describes it as "a laugh-until-you-cry nightmare comedy about male bonding gone awry." Starring Tim Robinson as Craig, Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Eric Rahill as Mike, and Paul Rudd as Brian. This earned rave reviews at TIFF last year - calling this "I Love You, Man for sickos." This featurette includes three actors – Rudd, Robinson and...

HBO is known for its legacy shows such as The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, and Game of Thrones. The premium network is known for its quality storytelling and was instrumental in ushering in the Golden Age of TV at the turn of the millennium. The shows that were aired during this time transformed TV storytelling.
However, in the age of streaming, there are plenty of networks and streamers who have built on HBO’s legacy. The network also has a streaming platform of its own in Max, which has been giving some excellent work in the form of The White Lotus and The Last of Us.
However, there are a few shows that seem to have fallen under the radar for fans, which proves that HBO is still one of the big players in the game. Here are 8 underrated HBO shows that did not get the love they deserved when they first aired.

The hipster on the indie block, A24, loves to do things differently. They have built almost a cult-ish following by making stuff legacy studios have refused to touch, and by selling cool merch that downtown celebrities and legions of film-bros love to show off. In the last few years, however, even a company like theirs had to start thinking bigger.
Having raised $225 million from Stripes in 2022, A24 was suddenly valued at $2.5 billion – a rather insane number for an indie film company. It goes without saying that growing pains are a real thing, with Hollywood already in upheaval due to writer strikes and empty theatres. Many indie companies have failed when they tried to go big. A24, nevertheless, believes in their credibility – over 60% of their moviegoers picked them just because they were from A24, a level of loyalty even Disney would envy.
The leap to blockbuster success, nonetheless, has been risky.

It’s no secret that Hollywood has been somewhat reluctant to dump resources into comedies that do not have a definitive genre slant, as these projects were among the first to be sent directly to streaming services during the fluctuation of distribution methods. Despite the emergence of more unique, diverse comedic voices than ever before in the history of cinema, a straightforward comedy isn’t enough to solidify a theatrical release; those coveted spots are typically reserved for films that appear to be definitely “cinematic” due to some moment of spectacle. While the time may have passed in which defining 21st-century comedic filmmakers like Adam McKay, the Farrelly brothers, David Gordon Green, or Paul Feig could generate buzz based solely on their name, it has encouraged the next generation of humorists to embrace their idiosyncrasies in hopes of standing out.

Some people still don’t understand why half the internet is hating on Rachel Zegler or why revamping a classic children’s tale has caused such a massive uproar. But whether it’s her comments, the creative direction of Snow White, or just internet outrage culture doing its thing, the controversy hasn’t slowed down. Of course, the movie itself had its own flaws, but that’s a story for another time.
What many people don’t realize is that, before all this Snow White drama, Zegler was actually in the running to play Supergirl in The Flash! Yep, before Sasha Calle ultimately landed the role, Zegler was considered for the part. Here is what actually happened!

You have to be like a rubber band, bendable and resilient. This could be the sentiment that seems to echo the struggles Rachel Zegler has faced in her career. But let’s talk about the real rubber band stretch—auditioning.
Picture yourself in a room; the casting director says, “Come back,” and you’re back again. And again. That’s what Zegler, the brilliant talent behind West Side Story, endured—nine times, to be exact, for a role that was never hers. As a fresh face in the industry, she got a taste of how grueling Hollywood can be.
She described it as “borderline abuse,” having her hopes repeatedly dashed in the name of ‘trying out’.

Here’s how it all unfolded, from auditioning for the role of Supergirl in The Flash to eventually becoming part of the Shazam family.

R-rated movies aren’t just surviving in the shadow of their PG-13 counterparts; they’re thriving, raking in massive box office numbers and smashing records left and right. Take the last decade’s chart-toppers like Joker with a staggering $1.07 billion or Deadpool 2 at $785.9 million. Deadpool & Wolverine is already leading the charge this decade, earning a jaw-dropping $1.33 billion. Then there’s Oppenheimer, proving that brainy, historical dramas can pull in $976.9 million. Combined, these ten blockbusters have earned a mind-blowing $8.97 billion globally. Yes, you read that right: billion with a capital B.

Cringe comedy master Tim Robinson makes his feature lead debut alongside an always dependable Paul Rudd in Andrew DeYoung’s hilarious bromantic-comedy, Friendship. Craig Betterman (Robinson) is a man in a rut. He lives his life in an unending triangle between his job as a tech consultant, support group meetings with his cancer-survivor wife, Tami (Kate Mara), and home with his son Steven (Jack Dylan Grazer). None of these experiences are fulfilling in any way, but he is resigned to the life he leads, having found a bit of comfort in the monotony. When a misdelivered package introduces him to suave new neighbor, Austin (Rudd), his world gets turned upside-down. A friendship is born, a bond is forged that seems like it can never be broken;...

With Tim Robinson’s first starring film role in writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s A24 debut Friendship, the comedian hits every cringe note with assistance from Paul Rudd and Kate Mara.
The anxiety-inducing dark bromance stars Robinson as suburban family man Craig, who quickly develops a man crush on his new neighbor Austin (Rudd), a beloved local weatherman with his own rock band and an eclectic collection of ancient artifacts.
But his desperate attempts to impress his new pal only makes things disastrously awkward, reverberating through his life and impacting his marriage, job and entire wellbeing as he gets recurring nosebleeds throughout, which Robinson uses as a hilarious physical comedy device.
“This is why guys shouldn’t have friends,” Craig gripes in one scene, which feels like a good thesis for this film who’s desperate for connection but keeps getting in his own way.

It's hard not to love a good fan theory, because sometimes they're absolutely bonkers while actually having some pretty salient points. Fan theories have been around since long before the internet, of course, with theories about the potential eighth passenger on The Minnow on "Gilligan's Island" dating back to at least the 1960s, but the world wide web has made it much easier for fans to develop and share their theories. Anyone with a wild take can head to social media and proliferate it, which means we are in an era of some truly fascinating fan theories. One of the most unique connects Stephen King's terrifying monstrous clown Pennywise from "It" to a beloved character from a Disney classic, and while it sounds ludicrous at first, it's really not all that far-fetched. At the very least, it's not any more far-fetched than the idea that Jesus Christ was an Engineer in the "Alien" movies,...

Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd are uncertain BFFs in the trailer for Friendship. The A24 film, written and directed by Andrew DeYoung, will play at SXSW in March before arriving in theaters in May.
In the clip, Robinson plays an average guy named Craig, who is encouraged by his wife (Kate Mara) to hang out with his new neighbor (Rudd) and a group of guys. The pair quickly become mates, with a montage of the two hanging out in bars and driving around together. “I can see the future,” Craig says in a voiceover.

Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson realize that some people are not meant to become besties in the trailer for the A24 comedy Friendship.
Writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s feature is set to hit theaters in May from A24 after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Midnight Madness roster. Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra and Billy Bryk round out the cast. Friendship centers on Craig (Robinson), whose attempts to connect with neighbor Austin (Rudd) run the risk of destroying both of their lives.
“Look, we had a couple of really nice hangs, but I think it best if we go our separate ways,” Rudd tells Robinson in the trailer. “I don’t wish to continue this friendship.”
Later, Robinson expresses his own frustrations. “You all accepted me way too fast,” he says. “You cant do that.”
Serving as producers are Johnny Holland, J.D. Lifshitz, Raphael Margules and Nick Weidenfeld.

Years before he directed Challengers, Luca Guadagnino created the coming-of-age miniseries We Are Who We Are, based on an original idea by writer Paolo Giordano. The series starred Jack Dylan Grazer (Shazam!), who gives a stunning performance as Fraser Wilson. Fraser is a troubled teen who moves with his moms– played by Chloe Sevigny(American Psycho) and Alice Braga(Queen of the South)– to a military base in Italy. At the base, he meets Harper Poythress (Jordan Kristine Seamon), a teen struggling with his gender identity. Guadagnino specializes in compelling, messy relationships and Fraser and Caitlin are one of his best. The longer runtime of a miniseries rather than a movie allows Guadagnino to give the world of We Are Who Are a sprawling, lived-in feel. We Are Who We Are is a well-observed portrayal of teen romance that rivals Challengers in its provocative relationship dynamics.
