In a blend of nostalgic horror and time-twisting thrills, Time Cut—featuring Outer Banks star Madelaine Petsch and Cobra Kai’s Griffin Gluck—captures audiences with its unique spin on the classic slasher genre. Directed by Matt Smukler, this film echoes the gripping suspense of time travel, as it merges horror with a mind-bending narrative. Rooted in the classic ‘80s horror tradition yet reimagined with fresh, inventive elements, Time Cut has found a special place in this year’s releases. While there aren’t any movies quite like Coralie Fergeat’s “The Substance,” there are plenty of over-the-top horror films about transformation, incredibly weird science, shared identities and losing your damn mind, like the 1981 cult movie “Possession,” pretty much every David Cronenberg movie, as well as offerings from Ken Russell, Peter Strickland, Julia Ducournau and Ari Aster.
Expect screaming, exploding heads, lots of blood and some of the most insane endings ever.
Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill in “Possession” (Credit: Gaumont) Possession (1981)
Isabelle Adjani has the mother of all freakouts in a subway in this role that earned her a César for Best Actress (the French equivalent of the Oscars) and Best Actress at the Cannes Film Fest that year, but that’s not even the most mind-blowing part of the movie form Polish director Andrzej Żuławski. She’s also cheating on her husband (Sam Neill) with something that isn’t really human.

With the momentum of stardom in her favor after Netflix’s Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega will surely take on more Hollywood projects following Season 2 of Wednesday, which is currently in production.
Before these two Tim Burton projects, Ortega had roles in several other Netflix films and a television show as well as separate feature films. She got her start in a Colgate toothpaste commercial and then a Disney Channel show that mirrored the aspect of her big family.
Some might recognize Ortega as the actress who portrayed the younger version of Jane Gloriana Villanueva (portrayed by Gina Rodriguez when she’s older) in the CW’s Jane the Virgin. She also appeared in Studio 666 a horror film in which the Foo Fighters move into a storied rock ‘n roll studio that starts to haunt their work. Most recently right before the arrival of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice in theaters,...

“Things get messy when you make a deal with the devil.”
Babysitters occupy a unique place in society. Somewhere between child and adult, they step into the family system for a brief moment in time to hold the line of parental responsibility. Of course people of all ages and identities can and do babysit, but when we think of the amateur profession, it’s a high school girl that usually comes to mind. She is polite, demure, and responsible, young enough to kick back and have fun with the kids, but old enough to take charge in the event of a crisis. Cosplaying the role of mother, she often becomes an object of sexual desire and stereotypical temptation for discontent fathers and curious young boys. McG plays with this enigmatic archetype in The Babysitter, a satanic horror comedy featuring one of the coolest and most endearing antagonists in recent horror memory.

Is there an issue more contentious in Hollywood than facial hair? Frankly, yes. But it's still fun to talk about. Throughout the history of the industry, stars' choice of facial adornment have caused no end of issues for studio executives. Such was the case with Gregory Peck and 1950's "The Gunfighter," in which he donned a majestic mustache that then-20th Century Fox head Darryl F. Zanuck claimed he would have paid $25K to shave. Sadly, however, Zanuck was out of the country when the film shot, and only discovered the offending stache upon his return. According to the exec, it was this precise element that was to blame for the film failing to meet box office expectations.
This is but one facial hair-related debacle in the annals of Hollywood lore. What about when some sort of facial fuzz is actually required for a role? Well, in the '90s,...

Clay Kaytis' 2018 family film "The Christmas Chronicles" has a pretty typical plot for a Christmas movie. A pair of mischievous kids (Judah Lewis and Darby Camp) catch Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) delivering gifts on Christmas Eve, and stow away on his sleigh. Their subterfuge, however, causes the sleigh to crash, scattering Santa's ephemera across Chicago. Santa and the two kids will have to work overtime to retrieve Santa's magical belongings -- his reindeer, his hat, and his gift bag -- so that he may deliver all his gifts by Christmas morning. Like in many kids' movies, the kids are mourning the loss of a parent, so "Chronicles" is also about regaining hope and realizing that childhood magic still exists in a world of grief.
The film was such a hit, a sequel, "The Christmas Chronicles 2" was released in 2020. Kurt Russell's real-life long-term sweetheart Goldie Hawn played Mrs. Claus in both films,...

Anyone who knows me would say my taste runs ever so slightly counter to the popular opinion but up top I wanted to shout out some big titles that I appreciate but didn’t quite make my favorites list. Oftentimes it feels like the days of true-blue horror icons are behind us, but Gerard Johnstone and Akela Cooper’s M3GAN was a veritable hoot that gave us an instantly iconic tiny terror in tights who more than lived up to the memes and showed everyone that hasn’t quite come around yet on HBO’s Girls just how #mother Allison Williams is. Also, that Skatt Brothers “Walk the Night” needle drop took up residence in my head last January and has not left. Talk to Me was one of the more intense in-theater experiences I had this year, and though it lost something the more I sat with it, what...

The best way I can describe the past year is as a year of trend shifts in the film zeitgeist. In a film environment where the most popular discussions often revolved around the never-ending slate of superhero blockbusters (and Martin Scorsese’s opinions on them for some reason), 2023 positioned itself as a time of change in the film industry.
Between the struggles faced by once-dominant cape flicks to break even at the box office and the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes being at the forefront of industry shakeups into awards season, 2023 has been a year of unlikely and/or unusual success stories for off-kilter genre movies.
In 2023 alone, we bore witness to a horror game adaptation outperforming superhero movies from both Marvel and DC, video game movies in general overtaking the conversation surrounding films and of course, the Barbenheimer double feature born from a meme before blossoming into two of the most successful films of the year.

Consider the career of one Joseph McGinty Nichol, better known by the nom de plume McG. This is a man whose directorial debut as a feature filmmaker in 2000 was the paradigm-shifting, zeitgeist-grabbing, new millennium bar-setter "Charlie's Angels." Sit with that for a moment. His next film? The extraordinary sequel "Full Throttle." Mind you these were gigs that star and producer Drew Barrymore personally sought out McG for based on the music videos he made for the band Sugar Ray. One of the more significant sliding doors moments in modern American history is the fact that McG was the original frontman for the band that would become Sugar Ray, before humbly realizing his talents lay elsewhere and convincing high school buddy Mark McGrath to take over.
McG helped launch and executive produce both "The Oc" and "Supernatural," he produced "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll" and "Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious,...

Filmed near the end of 2015, director McG’s horror comedy The Babysitter was released through the Netflix streaming service during the Halloween season of 2017 – and not only did it help establish Samara Weaving as a modern genre icon, it also did well enough to spawn a sequel. The Babysitter: Killer Queen was released by Netflix in September of 2020. Three years later (and eight years after he was in production on the first film), McG has confirmed to ComicBook.com that he’s still interested in making The Babysitter 3!
McG said, “We’re still talking about it. It was fun. The first movie, obviously, gave Samara Weaving to the world, and the second movie was Jenna Ortega. Hopefully we can answer the call and find a third star that reaches those lofty heights.“
The director previously told our friends at Bloody Disgusting, “There have always been three beats to this story. There’s the first beat,...

It was a moment film nerds could only dream of: Actor/director Joe Lynch was seated next to Quentin Tarantino at an event, and they were going deep on lenses. Specifically, how Tarantino had gotten his mitts on Ultra Panavision 70, a 70mm format from Ben Hur, for his 2015 Western The Hateful Eight. Not much could distract Lynch from a moment like that — until he heard Stuart Gordon, of Re-Animator fame, discussing his latest collaboration with screenwriter Dennis Paoli: a modern-day retelling of H.P. Lovecraft’s story “The Thing at the Doorstep” called Suitable Flesh.

‘Suitable Flesh’ – Barbara Crampton and Heather Graham on Gender-Flipped Lovecraft Roles [Interview]
Director Joe Lynch’s (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem, “Creepshow”) new movie Suitable Flesh, based on H.P. Lovecraft’s The Thing On The Doorstep, is set to unleash body-hopping madness in theaters and VOD on October 27, 2023.
Heather Graham and producer Barbara Crampton star in Suitable Flesh, executive produced by Brian Yuzna (Re-Animator). Dennis Paoli, the writer of Re-Animator and From Beyond, wrote the script.
Joe Lynch and the late Stuart Gordon’s frequent collaborators seamlessly insert Suitable Flesh into Gordon’s Lovecraftian universe (our review) but give it a slight twist in gender-flipping archetypical Lovecraft roles. Bloody Disgusting spoke with Joe Lynch, Heather Graham, and Barbara Crampton out of Tribeca earlier this year, before the SAG-AFTRA strike, where they discussed how Lynch came to direct Suitable Flesh and taking on these rare roles.
It was Barbara Crampton, a producer on Suitable Flesh, who reached out to Joe Lynch about helming the new feature.

Plot: A psychiatrist becomes obsessed with one of her young clients with multiple personalities.
Review: There have been few horror films more anticipated this year than Joe Lynch’s Suitable Flesh. The buzz coming out of various festivals has made this sound like a blood-soaked, sex-crazed, good time. Then add Barbara Crampton and writer Dennis Paoli returning to the world of Lovecraftian Horror, and my excitement was off the charts. I loved the setup of the film, using Lovecraft to help bring a new flavor to the possession/body swap formula. There are namedrops like Miskatonic University and even Cthulu, so it casts a wide net for Lovecraft fans.
If you don’t consider yourself up to date on all things H.P. Lovecraft, don’t worry, there’s plenty here to grasp onto. Because whether it’s Freaky or Freaky Friday , the body swap genre has many different approaches to take.

H.P. Lovecraft is easily one of the least sexy writers of all time but that hasn’t stopped director Joe Lynch (Mayhem) from dusting off one of ole grandad’s tentacle-less tales and spinning it into a true-blue Erotic Thriller. Paying homage to the prestige De Palma’s pictures that elevated the genre, and the trashier lesser-known titles that flooded the early 90s, Suitable Flesh is a dreamy, steamy, soft-core vibe full of body-swapping & bonin’ down.
Set in the Miskatonic Universe, this tawdry tale takes a break from the weird gods and even weirder monsters that make up so many of Lovecraft’s other stories. Elizabeth Derby (played by Heather Graham) is a psychiatrist specializing in dissociative identity disorder whose life gets flip-turned upside-down after meeting with a mysterious new patient, named Asa Waite.

When “Re-Animator” director Stuart Gordon died in 2020, he left behind a blood-soaked legacy that includes a handful of giddily exploitative horror classics and a legion of genre filmmakers who grew up in the shadow of his low-budget Lovecraft adaptations.
In that light, it would be hard to imagine a more fitting tribute to Gordon’s work than a goofy-smart and gore-happy wad of immaculate trash about an ancient Entity that inhabits the body of an undersexed psychiatrist played by Heather Graham. Lucky for us, Gordon ensured that we wouldn’t have to; based on the Lovecraft story “The Thing on the Doorstep” and written by Gordon’s longtime collaborator Dennis Paoli, “Suitable Flesh” is one of the last projects the late schlockmeister was developing before his death. And director Joe Lynch’s take on the material is every bit as loving and heretical towards Gordon’s memory as you would expect from a true devotee.

Adapted from a 1937 Hp Lovecraft story, this has some nice stylistic touches, even if the demonic possession, wafting sax and softcore silliness is a bit over the top
There’s some ripe softcore silliness here from veteran horror screenwriter Dennis Paoli and director Joe Lynch, inspired by Hp Lovecraft’s 1937 story, The Thing on the Doorstep. Despite a very game lead performance from Heather Graham, and some amusing 90s-style erotic thriller mannerisms – voile curtains blowing on a hot summer night while a sex scene happens to a wafting sax accompaniment – this left me not knowing quite where to look.
Graham plays the entirely preposterous psychiatrist Dr Elizabeth Derby (gender-flipped from Lovecraft’s original male protagonist), professionally fulfilled and happily married to devoted middle-aged hunk Edward (Johnathon Schaech), who cooks her branzino in the evening and spends a lot of time with his shirt off. One afternoon, Dr Derby has to...

Heather Graham may have a legendary decades-long career in Hollywood, but she’s never done horror…or rather, never shed her skin completely for a project quite like “Suitable Flesh.”
In the film, Graham plays psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby, who becomes obsessed with a handsome younger patient (Judah Lewis) who is suffering from extreme personality disorder. Yet Elizabeth soon realizes there is a dark occult danger within his presence, and after consummating their relationship, she too becomes possessed by an otherworldly spirit.
Turns out, Elizabeth Derby was in fact originally written as a man, and it was director Joe Lynch’s decision to flip the gender of the lead star.
“Just to get to play sort of like that powerful male role as a woman, you never usually get to play one where you’re like the ultimate villain that can’t die. It’s just like a something I’ve...

"It's a fantasy, to spice up your sex life!" Rlje Films + Shudder have revealed an official trailer for an indie horror flick titled Suitable Flesh, a new Lovecraftian tale arriving to watch starting in October. This first premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival & FrightFest earlier this year, and it's next set to play at both Fantastic Fest and Sitges before the release. Written by H.P. Lovecraft, Suitable Flesh follows Psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby who becomes obsessed with helping a patient suffering extreme personality disorder. But it leads her into dark occult danger as she tries to escape a horrific fate. From Joe Lynch "comes a gory, horny, and outlandish love letter to the late, great Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon, a new body horror take on H.P Lovecraft-minded cosmic mayhem that's a must-watch for fans of raunchy 80s horror." Heather Graham stars, with Judah Lewis, Bruce Davison, Johnathon Schaech, and Barbara Crampton.

Heather Graham is becoming unhinged playing a slew of characters, including an undead demon, in H.P. Lovecraft adaptation “Suitable Flesh.”
Graham stars as psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby who becomes obsessed with a seductive younger patient (Judah Lewis) suffering extreme personality disorder. Yet Elizabeth soon realizes there is a dark occult danger to being in his presence.
Bruce Davison, Johnathon Schaech, and Barbara Crampton also star in the film directed by Joe Lynch, with Crampton producing. Dennis Paoli penned the script, based on Lovecraft’s 1933 short story “The Thing on the Doorstep.”
“Re-Animator” scribe Paoli first developed the original script for “Suitable Flesh,” then titled “Envy,” with late filmmaker Stuart Gordon, who died in 2020. After later signing on, director Lynch swapped the gender of the lead psychiatrist character, now played by Graham.
“Joe Lynch is such a cinephile,” Graham told IndieWire in an interview conducted during the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

One of my most eagerly anticipated horror releases of the year is the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Suitable Flesh, which is coming our way from the team of director Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem), screenwriter Dennis Paoli – who has contributed to the screenplays for some of the most popular H.P. Lovecraft adaptations ever made; Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak, Dagon, Masters of Horror: Dreams in the Witch-House – and producer Barbara Crampton (who was in Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Castle Freak). Stars: Heather Graham, Barbara Crampton, Johnathon Schaech, Bruce Davison, Drake Malone, Judah Lewis | Written by Dennis Paoli | Directed by Joe Lynch
Directed by FrightFest favourite Joe Lynch, Suitable Flesh is a deliberate homage to the work of director Stuart Gordon (who died in 2020), specifically his adaptations of the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, such as Re-Animator, From Beyond and Castle Freak. Sadly, though it definitely has its moments, the end result is something of a mixed bag.
Set in the Miskatonic University hospital facility (where Re-Animator took place), the film begins with psychiatrist Dr Danielle Upton (longtime Gordon collaborator and all-around horror superstar Barbara Crampton) investigating her disturbed psych ward patient Elizabeth (Heather Graham), also a former psychiatrist. As Elizabeth relates her tale, flashbacks reveal that she became obsessed with handsome young patient Asa Waite (Judah Lewis), who was suffering with paranoid delusions.
However, it soon becomes clear that Asa is something far more sinister,...
