“My Lady Jane” may be chock full of corsets but this is not your average bodice ripper. A feminist retelling of the life of Lady Jane Grey – famous for being on the throne for a mere nine days before she got the chop (literally) – the series stars Emily Bader as a kickass Jane who dreams of running away from her overbearing mother and forced marriage to write a compendium about medicinal herbs.

Trachtenberg is set to direct the movie for 20th Century Studios from a script he co-wrote with Patrick Aison. “Badlands” comes following the success of Trachtenberg’s “Prey” — the “Predator” prequel which was a critical hit and broke records with its release on Hulu. Sources close to Deadline say that Elle Fanning is in negotiations to star in the film with Trachtenberg directing. Trachtenberg co-wrote script with Patrick Aison.
20th Century had no comment.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, other than it will feature everyone’s favorite extraterrestrial big game hunter. It is also not known about release plans as the last film exclusively streamed on Hulu (breaking numerous viewerships records for the streamer) but given that 20th Century has been very much back in the theatrical game with films like Boogeyman and the upcoming Alien: Romulus film bowing in theaters, a theatrical premiere isn’t out of the question.

The second time I saw "Doctor Strange" in a theater (I liked it enough to watch it more than once), I was seated next to a young boy. I vividly recall the scene where Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) crashes his car on a mountain road and violently flips over several times before landing in a body of water below. There was a brief pause, at which point the boy next to me said (loud enough for me to hear), "I sure wouldn't want that to happen to my Lamborghini!"
Kids sure do say the darndest things. They can also be somewhat sociopathic. It's not because they're all secretly the Antichrist in disguise (although it happens more often than you'd think), it's because they simply don't know any better. This can make things particularly awkward when they're potty training or discover that their genitals have multiple uses, like Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) in "Poor Things.

According to Deadline, no reason was given for the cancellation, but it’s worth nothing that “The Great” joins several other series cancelled in recent weeks amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Son of a bitch. What’s the opposite of Huzzah? Deadline reports that Hulu has canceled The Great after three seasons. The series was a satirical black comedy-drama that chronicled the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. Equal parts bizarre, touching, and downright hilarious, The Great has been one of my favourite recent series so it’s tough to see it go.

For three seasons, "The Great" has operated as one of the wildest, most debaucherous, and otherwise fantastic shows to emerge in the era of streaming. Created and overseen by "The Favourite" writer Tony McNamara, the series re-imagines a young Catherine the Great (played superbly by Elle Fanning) and her reign as the Empress of All Russia, taking immense liberties with history in whatever way it deems fit to serve its story. Alas, all things must eventually come to an end, even something as beautifully bizarre and outlandish as "The Great."
Coming off a stellar third season that proved the show has yet to miss a step, Hulu has sadly elected not to renew "The Great" for a fourth season. As Deadline observed while confirming the news, "It's unclear what made the streamer decide to cancel the comedy," given its almost-universally positive reviews and apparent popularity.

Sorrows abound as Hulu‘s dark costume dramedy The Great has been canceled following the recent release of its third season starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Debuting in 2020, the Emmy-winning series created by Tony McNamara (The Favourite) tells the origin story of Catherine the Great (Fanning) and tracks her progress as she works toward becoming Russia’s reigning 18th-century empress. Taking liberties with the historical figures, the show delivers zany and surreal elements alongside Catherine’s mission to take control after discovering the volatile and unpredictable nature of her new husband Peter (Hoult). (Credit: Christopher Raphael/Hulu) News of the cancellation was shared by Deadline. The show’s end comes as a bit of a surprise as Season 3 seemed to set up a new chapter for Catherine following [Spoiler] Peter’s shocking death in Episode 6. Along with winning the Emmy in 2020 for Outstanding Period Costumes, both Fanning and Holt received...

Well, this will go down as one of the most shocking cancellations ever.
Hulu has canceled the Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult comedy The Great after three seasons.
The sad news was first reported by Deadline.
Created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great followed Catherine The Great's story as "an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter," according to the official description.
"Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change."
"All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside."
News of the cancellation comes over three months on from the premiere of The Great Season 3, which unspooled all episodes on May 12.

No Huzzahs will be had today. In something of a surprise, Hulu has canceled “The Great,” the period comedy series from creator Tony McNamara that starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, IndieWire has confirmed.
The series will end after airing three seasons, with the most recent season dropping back on May 12. The show is nominated for an Emmy this year after landing acting nominations for both Fanning and Hoult in its standout second season. It’s been nominated for seven Emmys in all. The show had also been nominated for several Golden Globes, Film Independent Spirit Awards, WGA and SAG Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.
Hulu had no comment.
It’s unclear whether the show’s cancellation is related to the ongoing writers and actors strike, which has resulted in several shows being un-renewed of late, or other factors.

“The Great” will not return for a fourth season at Hulu. The streaming service canceled the period drama after three critically acclaimed seasons.
The series was created, written and executive produced by “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara, and it starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult in a kooky tale about the life of Russian empress Catherine the Great.
The third season, which dropped all episodes on May 12, followed Catherine (Fanning) and her husband Peter (Hoult) as they worked on their relationship following her staged coup to take control of Russia. Thankfully, the Season 3 finale provided some closure to Catherine’s story, as it featured her growing into her role as leader while grieving a major loss.
The reasons for the cancellation are unclear, given the show’s garnered strong fan response as well as seven Emmy nominations since debuting in 2020. The drama won the Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in...

Exclusive: Ok, this one hurts. Hulu has canceled fan favorite The Great after three seasons.
The series starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great reinvented the period drama by revisiting the life of Catherine the Great, Russia’s reigning empress from 1762 to 1796. It depicted an iconic character and her place in history through a unique prism.
The third season dropped May 12 and revolved around Catherine (Fanning) and Nicholas (Hoult) working on their marriage.
It’s unclear what made the streamer decide to cancel the comedy, which garnered positive reviews and seven Emmy nominations since launching in 2020. "Ahsoka" has finally arrived on Disney+, bringing us the further adventures of Ahsoka Tano, the former Jedi Padawan turned Rebel voiced by Ashley Eckstein in the animated shows "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels" and played in live-action by Rosario Dawson. Ahsoka has also appeared in the Disney+ series "The Book of Boba Fett" and "The Mandalorian," the latter of which introduced us to one of the big villains of "Ahsoka," Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto). The character showed up in "Chapter 13: The Jedi" as the Imperial Magistrate of Calodan on the planet Corvus. She battled with Ahsoka, who defeated her before demanding to know the location of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). Costume designer Sharon Long won an Emmy Award last year for her work on the Hulu series “The Great.” But it was easy for her to not rest on any laurels heading into the show’s third season due to the story itself.
“We had the advantage in the change was Catherine [Elle Fanning] wasn’t pregnant. So there was already a sort of built-in change there. Which I think is really helpful,” Long, an Emmy nominee this year as well, tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel. Long and her team gets scripts in a block, two at a time, and the workflow allows her to take the costumes in the moment of the story. A potential actors strike may be looming, but the 75th Primetime Emmys looks full-steam ahead, for now.
Announcing the nominations today at the historic Hollywood Athletic Club, Yvette Nicole Brown and TV Academy boss Frank Scherma read out some familiar and once again strongly tipped names including Succession, The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Ted Lasso and The White Lotus. However, it was the names and shows the past Emmy nominee and the RadicalMedia co-founder did not utter that left some hopefuls with a bad taste in their mouths this morning.
Noting that they hoped the “ongoing guild negotiations can come to equitable and swift end,” the duo did not mention the work of a Dame of the realm, a real prince, a big-screen legend or, yet again, Yellowstone.

Altogether, now… Huzzah! The Great is back on our screens this week for a third season of raunchy comedy and political machinations, all set in the lavish court of Russian empress, Catherine The Great.
After season two’s cliffhanger ending, Catherine (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) are trying to make their marriage work. The fact that Peter’s now First Husband to her reign doesn’t help, despite his efforts to keep himself busy by looking after their young son and getting involved in culinary ventures.
Among the returning faces from the first two seasons are Adam Godley, as “Archie”, the conflicted leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, and Charity Wakefield as Georgina, who is simultaneously Peter’s mistress and Catherine’s close confidante. Actress Elle Fanning has revealed that she lost a role as a 16-year-old because she “wasn’t sexy enough”. According to Deadline, Fanning, 25, the younger sister of actress Dakota, told The Times newspaper that when she was 16 years old, she auditioned for a role in a comedy movie about a father and daughter going on a road trip.
The star of the comedy drama series ‘The Great’ said that she was told she had been rejected for the role “because she wasn’t sexy enough” – “unf***able” was the verdict she was given.

It certainly isn’t true to how history really happened, but “The Great” is one of the most inventive, entertaining series out there right now. Billed by Hulu alternately as “an occasionally true story” and “an almost entirely untrue story,” it takes the real-life relationship between Catherine the Great and Peter III and twists it into something that makes for maddeningly watchable comedy and drama. Season 3 begins with a new reality for Catherine and Peter as they examine how their marriage can work with the empress in power and Russia’s former leader by her side, and things only get wilder and more chaotic from there.

There are a lot of guns in season 3 of Hulu’s The Great, particularly a season where Catherine the Great is trying to outlaw Russia’s pastime –murder. But throughout the chaos, reason and serenity arise as Elle Fanning’s royal comes into her full reign.
“We don’t know how it’s going to end,” says Fanning on The Great creator Tony McNamara’s approach every season. While he’s happy to share some sort of end-game with actors, the creator leaves himself in a position where he can tweak and pivot if needed storywise.
One of the major to-dos this season was the fate of Nicholas Hoult’s Peter the III.
“I think we knew it was looming, even though we’re not completely historically accurate,” says Fanning about the show’s insane and zany fun in blurring fact with fiction, “It had to happen at some point.

“The Great” Season 3 contains some titanic shifts of character — and actors — so even though AP European History has already spoiled the broad strokes of the Hulu series, spoilers ahead.
Catherine (Elle Fanning) grieves in the last five episodes of the season, leading to an eventual, equally tragic and thrilling transformation that brings her closer to becoming a great ruler with a capital-g, capital-r. But underneath the ice — metaphorically speaking, not the literal ice-covered lake into which Peter (Nicholas Hoult) falls and drowns — showrunner Tony McNamara and casting director Dixie Chassay and her team did a lot to make sure the show always felt full even with Peter gone.
Some of this happens by keeping Hoult around, playing Peter’s double Pugachev, who rabble-rouses at the behest of Archie (Adam Godley) and then starts liking all this arousal a little too much. The show also makes strategic additions to the regulars of Catherine’s court.

“The talent is all there. Every person is hitting that rhythm. “The Great” is billed as “an occasional true story” about the rise of Catherine the Great (played by Elle Fanning) in Russia during the 18th century. The third season of the comedy was released on Hulu a few weeks ago. It is created by the Oscar-nominated writer of “The Favourite,” Tony McNamara. Mahmood says, “I was blown away by the tonal balance the show achieves. The fact it can be as hysterical as it can be heartbreaking. It’s constantly balancing these high stakes with levity. Not a lot of shows can pull that off. It’s Tony McNamara’s genius writing.

This story about Elle Fanning and “The Great” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
There’s a scene in Episode 4 of the third season of Tony McNamara’s “The Great” in which Elle Fanning’s Catherine the Great has a huge argument with her husband, the deposed Russian Emperor Peter III, over his delight at the fact that their son’s first word is pussy. After the shouting is over, Catherine storms into an empty room, throws back her head and screams at the top of her lungs — and the camera, hovering above her, has a perfect view directly down her throat to an unnerving depth.
“We were all laughing after that shot, and Tony was like, ‘We basically saw inside your body,’” Fanning said with a grin. “It was not an attractive shot, but we don’t care about looking attractive on this show.

Elle Fanning, 25, and Jenna Ortega, 20, have learned a lot from their roles as Catherine the Great and Wednesday Addams (respectively). Hulu’s “The Great” and Netflix’s “Wednesday” have educated them about their craft as actors, but also about how producing can liberate them from toxic workplace dynamics. These former child stars let each other in on how they’re navigating adulthood and the pressures of social media, a topic that makes Ortega teary.
Elle Fanning: Are you a good auditioner? I’m terrible. I fainted once. I think I was 12. But I got Pinkberry and Burger King afterwards, so I was like, “This is great!” They make me so nervous.
Jenna Ortega: I had really awful experiences with screaming and things like that. The first time I ever had to scream for an audition, it was a three-hour drive, so my mom was saying, “Hey, do you want to practice?...

Production designers had their hands full the past year, recreating everything from an 18th century palace large enough for indoor badminton games to retro kitchens that looked like they were straight out of the 1970s. For the third season of “The Great,” production designer Francesca Di Mottola a built a “gigantic games room where anything could happen and served many different purposes,” horse breeding among them. The production designer began scouting locations in the U.K., where the black comedy about Catherine the Great is filmed, but none quite fit what she was looking for, so she built the room on a soundstage.
The room, which first appeared in episode 3 of the Hulu series, had high ceilings and paneled walls with timber all around. It needed to be large enough for parties in addition to badminton games and horse breeding.

Missing “Succession” already?
It’s understandable, considering the critically acclaimed and easily quotable HBO series just had its swan song last Sunday.

The most popular series among “Succession” fans lately has been “White House Plumbers,” the Nixon-era satirical drama starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. Since debuting on Max on May 1, “Succession” fans have been...

The third season of Hulu's historical dark comedy "The Great" features a shocking plot twist - though, perhaps not so shocking to anyone familiar with the real history on which the show is based. After dodging numerous near-deadly feats and assassination attempts, Peter III finally meets his maker in a sudden and shocking way. In real life, Peter III's death was just as sudden, but it happened very differently.
How Does Peter III of Russia Die on "The Great"?
As we've expected, the third season of "The Great" features Peter and Catherine alternating between plotting against each other and expressing their tangled, twisted love for each other. Peter spends the first half of the season undermining Catherine at every turn and chafing at her being in charge. The final straw comes when he can't resist the idea of invading Sweden.
Peter essentially steals Catherine's army and marches them off...

When it comes to acting, talent counts. But as Elle Fanning told Josh Horowitz on his “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, there’s another factor that sometimes counts even more.
Fanning said that she wasn’t considered for a role in an unnamed franchise movie because her Instagram following wasn’t large enough for the studio’s taste.
“I didn’t get a part once for something big because – it might not have just been this reason, but this was the feedback that I heard – was because I didn’t have enough Instagram followers at the time,” she said. Fanning currently sits at 6.2 million.
“That’s something I firmly don’t believe in, for not getting a part,” she said.
Fortunately, Fanning claims she isn’t under pressure to join the tentpoles.
“I don’t feel that way. I don’t,” she said. “It does something for people, you know, but...

It’s always something. Either divorce is on your mind or your subjects may rise up against you. Welcome to the world of ambitious Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) in the dark comedy The Great’s third season, which depicts (with some creative liberties) her 18th-century rule after dethroning defiant and often infantile husband Peter III of Russia (Nicholas Hoult). “We always try to have a couple of things that are a base for story, even if we tell it a little differently to how it happened,” says show creator Tony McNamara. Christopher Raphael/Hulu Of course, as a way to deal with a spouse she blames for her mother’s death, divorce may be an unsatisfying second choice. In the Season 2 finale, we saw Catherine murder “Peter”…only to find she had viciously stabbed his doppelgänger, Yemelyan Puga-chev (also played by Hoult). Which side of this extreme love-hate relationship will prevail?...
