The 2025 Sundance Film Festival‘s lineup will include 87 feature films and six episodic projects. Sundance received 15,775 submissions from 156 countries, including 4,138 feature-length film submissions. The 87 films selected represent 33 countries and territories, with 36 of the chosen films coming from first-time feature filmmakers.

“The Sundance Film Festival remains steadfast in its commitment to elevating unique and urgent voices in independent storytelling. Audiences can expect a 2025 program that showcases varied and vibrant filmmaking globally,” stated Robert Redford, Sundance Institute Founder and President.

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival revealed the 87 feature films and six episodic projects selected for the festival on Wednesday, announcing that new films starring Jennifer Lopez, Dylan O’Brien, Chloe Sevigny, André Holland, Conan O’Brien and Olivia Colman will debut in Park City in January.

Ahead of the festival, which runs from from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2, TheWrap spoke to Eugene Hernandez, Director, Sundance Film Festival and Public Programming and Kim Yutani, Sundance Film Festival Director of Programming, about this year’s festival – what people should look out for and if they’re ready for the Sundance arrival of Lopez, whose new version of “Kiss of the Spider Woman” from director Bill Condon is one of the buzzier titles at the festival.

Considering this is awards season, Hernandez said that Sundance is “the crystal ball.” “This is the chance to look into the future,” Hernandez said. And he’s right – current Oscar contenders...

The 2025 line-up for the Sundance Film Festival has been announced.

This year’s fest features the latest projects from Oscar winners, studio filmmakers, and indie stalwarts like Justin Lin, Ira Sachs, Barry Levinson, and Questlove while the U.S. Dramatic Competition section is made of selections from directors new to the Park City fest.

“The combination of these new voices and some of these filmmakers who might be more household names, speaks to the the power of independent cinema and how, no matter where you are in your career, you are drawn to this community that Sundance has helped build over the years,” Sundance director of programming Kim Yutani told The Hollywood Reporter. Of the 87 feature films announced thus far, 36 titles (41 percent) are directed by first-time feature film directors.

The Sundance Film Festival is still deliberating about where to move in 2027, but in the meantime, the 2025 festival will go on in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. On Wednesday, the festival announced its Features and Episodic lineup, with a rich selection of independent projects that feature a lot of big names.

Charli xcx made a daring fashion statement while attending Variety’s Hitmakers Brunch at Nya West on Saturday (December 7) in Los Angeles.

The 32-year-old Brat singer was honored as the Hitmaker of the Year at the event. She walked the red carpet wearing a sheer tan gown that exposed her chest.

Other honorees included the likes of Lainey Wilson, Raye and Benson Boone. Fellow stars such as Lana Del Rey and Olivia Rodrigo were also in attendance.

The Sundance Film Festival might be moving in 2028, but until then, it’s parking itself back in Park City for another edition of what are expected to be just under 100 features and 50 shorts. The second Sundance under the supervision of new festival director (and IndieWire co-founder) Eugene Hernandez takes place January 23 through February 2, with the lineup expecting to start trickling out next week.

Ahead of the announcement, however, IndieWire has the scoop on films we’re hearing will be in Utah this year and the ones — some long-gestating indies, others secret surprise drops — we’re hoping will pop there. Some expected titles, like Celine Song’s “Past Lives” follow-up “Materialists” or “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” from Kogonoda either aren’t finished yet or are holding out for Cannes and into the fall festivals. Others, like Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s “Hot Milk,” have been on this list before.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series that shines a spotlight on the scripts for this year’s buzziest films is now pointing the viewfinder on Saturday Night, the Jason Reitman-directed film that tells the origin story of NBC’s venerable late-night franchise by focusing on the 90 minutes leading up to its TV debut.

Saturday Night Live celebrated Thanksgiving with the “it girls” this year.

The sketch revolved around a Thanksgiving dinner featuring the episode’s host Charli Xcx as Posh Spice herself, Victoria Beckham.

It also included Bowen Yang as Marc Jacobs, Chloe Fineman as Julia Fox, Ego Nwodim as Naomi Campbell, Sarah Sherman as Rachel Sennott, Ashley Padilla and Jane Wickline as Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Heidi Gardner as Cher and Kenan Thompson as Law Roach.

Exclusive: In a bidding situation, HBO has landed one of the highest profile comedy packages to hit the marketplace in awhile. Titled Kansas City Star, the half-hour project is headlined and executive produced by Kaley Cuoco and created and executive produced by the Hacks trio of Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky, sources tell Deadline.

Deals are still being finalized but the comedy is expected to get a series order, I hear. Warner Bros. Television, where Cuoco and her Yes, Norman banner have a producing deal and Aniello & Downs as well as Statsky are under overall deals, is the studio.

Details about Kansas City Star are sketchy but it is described by sources as a comedy with heart starring Cuoco as a semi-famous actress who returns to her hometown to work with a regional theater troupe. Reps for HBO and Wbtv declined comment.

Max has released the first footage from its new seasons of “Hacks,” “The White Lotus,” Nathan Fielder’s “The Rehearsal,” “The Righteous Gemstones,” Tim Robinson’s “The Chair Company,” James Gunn and John Cena’s “Peacemaker,” and a bunch of other originals.

The streaming service’s 2025 (and late 2024) slate can be previewed in the promo video at the bottom of this story. But first, here is the full list of comedies, dramas, and docs — the asterisks are Max’s, and they denote brand new footage. The bolding is ours, and it denotes first footage. On Sunday night, during the finale of “The Penguin,” Max released one of those biannual teasers previewing the service’s upcoming programming that serves as a periodic reminder that HBO is the best in the business. “Saturday Night” is a ticking clock film like few in recent memory. The new movie, directed and co-written by Jason Reitman, is about the first-ever broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” on October 11, 1975, and the story unfolds in real-time during the 90 minutes before showtime.

“Jason described it really well: You’re balancing truth and myth. But the main takeaway that you want is the feeling of what it might have felt like that night,” co-editor Shane Reid tells Gold Derby about the film. “So the constraints of time are something that we’re conscious of and using, but we’re not allowing it to dictate the way that you want to feel in the film.”

The actor and original Saturday Night Live castmember took to X, formerly Twitter, on Friday to share his thoughts on director Jason Reitman’s latest film, which centers on the 90 minutes leading up to the sketch comedy show’s first broadcast in 1975.

“Cracking a Head to applaud Jason Reitman’s triumphant SNL film. Jason Reitman's superb "Saturday Night" features 80 speaking parts, along with dozens of background actors, and a camera that effortlessly weaves through a busy set while capturing the disorderly and anarchic production of the first episode of "Saturday Night Live." That required a lot of meticulous planning, especially when there are long single-take shots that move seamlessly throughout a set that has no edge of frame, which means that everything on that set was designed as if all of it could be seen on camera in any given moment. But even with such careful organization needed to realize this hilarious, frenzied chronicle of showbiz history, Reitman still had moments of last minute inspiration, and one of them resulted in a key scene that serves as a significant moment of realization for showrunner Lorne Michaels (played by "The Fablemans" star Gabriel Labelle).

In 2008, director Jason Reitman lived his “SNL” dream.

He was fresh off the success of “Juno,” which earned Reitman a Best Director Oscar nomination and the film a Best Picture nomination. His agent reached out to Lorne Michaels and relayed Reitman’s wish — to do a guest writing stint on “Saturday Night Live.” And, incredibly, it happened.

“It was like getting to suit up for the Los Angeles Lakers for one night,” Reitman told TheWrap. He and “SNL” writer Simon Rich stayed up until four in the morning on a Tuesday night working on ideas. On Wednesday, they took their three sketch ideas to the table read. “And then later that afternoon I got to be there for the moment when they come out of Lorne’s office and pinned a piece of paper to the wall,” Reitman said.
