The Sundance Film Festival might be moving in 2028, but until then, it’s parking itself back in Park City for another edition of what are expected to be just under 100 features and 50 shorts. The second Sundance under the supervision of new festival director (and IndieWire co-founder) Eugene Hernandez takes place January 23 through February 2, with the lineup expecting to start trickling out next week.
Ahead of the announcement, however, IndieWire has the scoop on films we’re hearing will be in Utah this year and the ones — some long-gestating indies, others secret surprise drops — we’re hoping will pop there. Some expected titles, like Celine Song’s “Past Lives” follow-up “Materialists” or “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” from Kogonoda either aren’t finished yet or are holding out for Cannes and into the fall festivals. Others, like Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s “Hot Milk,” have been on this list before.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series that shines a spotlight on the scripts for this year’s buzziest films is now pointing the viewfinder on Saturday Night, the Jason Reitman-directed film that tells the origin story of NBC’s venerable late-night franchise by focusing on the 90 minutes leading up to its TV debut.
The flick written by Reitman and Gil Kenan takes place on October 11, 1975, when an ambitious troupe of young comedians and writers would go on to change television forever. Formerly titled SNL 1975 (that’s the title on the script), the film tells the true story of what happened behind the scenes that night leading up to the first-ever broadcast of SNL.
The movie stars Gabriel Labelle as SNL honcho Lorne Michaels, Dylan O’Brien (as Dan Aykroyd), Cory Michael Smith (Chevy Chase), Rachel Sennott (Rosie Shuster), Lamorne Morris (Garrett Morris), Nicholas Braun (Jim Henson), Finn Wolfhard (NBC...

In taking on the role of Gilda Radner in Jason Reitman’s film Saturday Night, British actress Ella Hunt was stepping into the shoes of a beloved U.S. treasure and a Saturday Night Live-verse she herself had not grown up with. In Saturday Night, Reitman details the hours approaching the very first broadcast of SNL—resulting in a fast-paced, comedic romp in which chaos reigns. For Hunt, it was not only a case of working through the character development with no long-held cultural connection to Radner, but also of honoring her in a way that resonated with all the SNL viewers who’ve loved her for so long.
Deadline: As a Brit, what was your feeling going into the role of Gilda Radner?
Ella Hunt: Honestly, for me, approaching this movie or when I got sent the audition, part of my initial hesitancy was, I can’t...

Glen Powell. Timothée Chalamet. Rachel Sennott. The trio from “Challengers.”
If you’ve been online recently, you’ve probably seen fan-filmed footage from celebrity lookalike contests. While not new, the current wave kicked off in earnest at the end of October, when there was a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest in Washington Square Park in New York City. Over 10,000 people attempted to watch the festivities, according to The New York Times, which featured all eras of the actor, and became viral gold when Chalamet himself dropped in.
The prize? $50, and bragging rights.
Since then, seemingly every celeb that has ever had a moment in the internet sun has had an event in their honor, from a Chicago-based one (natch) for Jeremy Allen White to a Dublin gathering for Paul Mescal. While they are unofficial, lo-fi, and grassroots, they spread like wildfire on X. Any celeb (or publicist) worth their salt knows...

There are Glen Powells everywhere for those with the eyes to see — at least according to the lookalike contest held earlier today in the Top Gun: Maverick star’s hometown of Austin, Texas.
According to Fox 7 Austin, hundreds of people gathered at Auditorium Shores in Town Lake Park on Sunday, including Powell’s mother and aunt, who helped select the winner from a pool of several contestants.
While Powell didn’t make an appearance in person, on account of filming Edgar Wright’s forthcoming remake of The Running Man in England, he did FaceTime into the event and send a message to organizers promising something money can’t buy: a cameo in his next movie.

It’s an early Sunday afternoon in New York’s Washington Square Park, and if you walk past the hungover college students slamming bacon egg and cheese sandwiches and turn right at the brass band busking for tips, you can see a miracle is happening: an internet trend is still in full swing.
A row of at least seven people in blue chef aprons and white T-shirts line up in front of the Washington Square Arch. Some have cigarettes tucked behind their ears, while others scratch at wonky tattoos hastily drawn on with Sharpie.

Marcello Hernández’s beloved and viral Saturday Night Live character Domingo was arrested by Sabrina Carpenter this weekend. The charge? He’s far too hot.
Carpenter “arrests” a fan for being “too hot” at each of her Short n’ Sweet tour concert stops. The bit occurs just before she performs “Juno.” The singer arrested Millie Bobby Brown at an Atlanta show last month, and did the same to Rachel Sennott and Margaret Qualley earlier this weekend in Los Angeles.
Hernández’s Domingo character originated during Ariana Grande’s Oct. 12 episode of SNL, when the Wicked star joined the show’s cast as a group of bridesmaids singing a parodied version of Carpenter’s “Espresso,” accidentally revealing to the groom that the bride was unfaithful to her fiancée during their bachelorette trip, where she hit it off with a man named Domingo.
“Sabrina, I’m here!” Hernández can be heard shouting...

Saturday Night Live celebrated Thanksgiving with the “it girls” this year.
The sketch revolved around a Thanksgiving dinner featuring the episode’s host Charli Xcx as Posh Spice herself, Victoria Beckham.
It also included Bowen Yang as Marc Jacobs, Chloe Fineman as Julia Fox, Ego Nwodim as Naomi Campbell, Sarah Sherman as Rachel Sennott, Ashley Padilla and Jane Wickline as Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Heidi Gardner as Cher and Kenan Thompson as Law Roach.
Cher was in charge of doing the cooking, though it soon becomes clear she shouldn’t be trusted in the kitchen once she pours Sprite in the gravy.

Back in September, Christina Aguilera tapped Sabrina Carpenter to perform “What a Girl Wants” together at a 25th anniversary celebration of her debut album. On Friday, Carpenter revisited the moment on a bigger stage by bringing out Aguilera to perform the hit single, as well as “Ain’t No Other Man,” at her concert at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena.
While playing a round of Spin the Bottle with her backup dancers, Carpenter announced the winner as “a little Christina,” at which point Aguilera emerged from a platform under the stage.

Exclusive: In a bidding situation, HBO has landed one of the highest profile comedy packages to hit the marketplace in awhile. Titled Kansas City Star, the half-hour project is headlined and executive produced by Kaley Cuoco and created and executive produced by the Hacks trio of Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky, sources tell Deadline.
Deals are still being finalized but the comedy is expected to get a series order, I hear. Warner Bros. Television, where Cuoco and her Yes, Norman banner have a producing deal and Aniello & Downs as well as Statsky are under overall deals, is the studio.
Details about Kansas City Star are sketchy but it is described by sources as a comedy with heart starring Cuoco as a semi-famous actress who returns to her hometown to work with a regional theater troupe. Reps for HBO and Wbtv declined comment.

Max’s 2025 is packed with a lot of exciting new and returning shows, and the spot shows off new footage from many of them, from the prequel series “It: Welcome to Derry” to Emmy-winner “Hacks” Season 4.
Among the returning series previewed in the spot, there are first looks at “Hacks” Season 4, featuring Deborah (Jean Smart) getting in Ava’s (Hannah Einbinder) face and sarcastically calling her a “big, brave girl,” to which Ava coolly replies “I guess I am;” “The White Lotus” Season 3, which features Walton Goggins admiring a huge gold Buddha statue and the return of Natasha Rothwell’s Season 1 character Belinda; and “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 4, which features John Goodman with a long,...

“Saturday Night” is a ticking clock film like few in recent memory. The new movie, directed and co-written by Jason Reitman, is about the first-ever broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” on October 11, 1975, and the story unfolds in real-time during the 90 minutes before showtime.
“Jason described it really well: You’re balancing truth and myth. But the main takeaway that you want is the feeling of what it might have felt like that night,” co-editor Shane Reid tells Gold Derby about the film. “So the constraints of time are something that we’re conscious of and using, but we’re not allowing it to dictate the way that you want to feel in the film.”
Starring Gabriel Labelle as “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels and featuring a parade of young talent playing the famed Not Ready for Primetime Players, “Saturday Night” is based on several interviews Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan conducted...

Longtime friends and collaborators, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, reunite once more in this new biopic, charting the explosive birth of the iconic Saturday Night Live comedy program on the US TV network NBC.
Set in the frantic 90 minutes before the show’s inaugural episode aired, Saturday Night expertly captures the unpredictable, high-stakes nature of live television, weaving in biting humour, personal conflicts, and the birth of a cultural phenomenon.
Reitman and Kenan’s script balances tension and comedy, paying homage to the anarchic energy of SNL’s origins while offering insight into the fragile egos, narcotic excesses and volatile personalities that shaped its creation.
The film opens on October 11, 1975, with a visibly stressed Lorne Michaels, portrayed with nuance and gravitas by The Fabelmans star Gabriel Labelle, entering NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza in preparation for the first show. Outside he is greeted by a stressed out NBC page (Stanger Things...

“Saturday Night” and “Bottoms” actress Rachel Sennott may be a rising star in Hollywood, but in the Cayman Islands, she’s just another tourist who forgot to check the rules around weed in a foreign territory. While traveling there for a much-needed vacation, Sennott was arrested and detained at the airport following a bag search where security found a CBD joint she didn’t realize she’d packed. As detailed in an interview on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Sennott’s assistant came to the rescue when her boss stopped responding to calls and texts.
“Shout out to my 23-year-old assistant Claire!” Sennott said, receiving a huge applause from the studio audience. “Literally, shout-out Claire! Shout-out Claire. Claire thinks I’ve been kidnapped because I always reply to my texts. So Claire calls the embassy. She goes, ‘Rachel Sennott’s been kidnapped.’ They go, ‘Who is that?'”

Despite being born and spending much of my life on the other side of the Atlantic, I’ve always been a fan of Saturday Night Live. The live format, which not only allows for constant improvisation but also for countless memorable moments of actors breaking character, is immensely appealing, as is the show’s structure – a collection of distinct sketches with musical performances. So naturally, a film based on the pilot episode, specifically the 90 minutes leading up to the broadcast, caught my attention.
Saturday Night is the title of the movie and was also the name of the original show due to a conflict with another late-night program, Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell. After that show was canceled, SNL adopted the title it’s known by today, becoming a cultural phenomenon that, despite having its greatest impact in its home country, still crossed borders and reached audiences everywhere. Wow!” Aykroyd wrote after watching the movie at his local theater. “What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, music-filled ride. A perfect window into the creative process at its highest level. Pretty accurate too.”
The Ghostbusters actor continued, “I was there that night and got to relive it wonderfully again. Congratulations Gil, Jason and Blumie. Don’t miss it whether you know the show or not. It is a stand-alone masterpiece and surefire candidate for Best Picture.”

It was no small feat to get “Saturday Night Live” off the ground at NBC, and as a result, the cast of “Saturday Night” is pretty huge. In many cases, the actors also look eerily similar to the people they’re playing.
Hitting theaters everywhere on Oct. 11 after a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles, Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” tells the story of the 90 minutes right before the first-ever episode of “SNL.” It’s chaotic and at the time, even Lorne Michaels couldn’t explain what the show was going to be.
Below, you’ll find the cast of “Saturday Night” alongside what their real-life counterparts looked like back then.

Lorne Michaels is the creator and, to this day, producer of “Saturday Night Live.” He’s played in “Saturday Night” by Gabriel Labelle, who had his breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.

Most moviegoers can’t remember the last time they saw silly, campy fun on the big screen. That’s because not nearly enough of them saw Bottoms.
“Camp” in comedy is hard to define scientifically, and it’s mostly understood through examples. For instance, The Rocky Horror Picture show is considered the quintessential camp flick for its over-the-top performances, garish aesthetic and the inherent silliness of its excess. But, hey, nobody saw that movie in theaters either. In fact, it’s kind of an unspoken rule that campy comedy films can’t make a single dollar at the box office, a standard that the literal camp comedy classic Wet Hot American Summer staunchly upheld upon its release in 2001.
However, and though many of these camp comedies failed to achieve mainstream popularity, they succeeded in influencing the next generation of filmmakers who would carry on the tradition of unashamed, unrestrained playfulness,...

Jason Reitman's superb "Saturday Night" features 80 speaking parts, along with dozens of background actors, and a camera that effortlessly weaves through a busy set while capturing the disorderly and anarchic production of the first episode of "Saturday Night Live." That required a lot of meticulous planning, especially when there are long single-take shots that move seamlessly throughout a set that has no edge of frame, which means that everything on that set was designed as if all of it could be seen on camera in any given moment. But even with such careful organization needed to realize this hilarious, frenzied chronicle of showbiz history, Reitman still had moments of last minute inspiration, and one of them resulted in a key scene that serves as a significant moment of realization for showrunner Lorne Michaels (played by "The Fablemans" star Gabriel Labelle).

In 2008, director Jason Reitman lived his “SNL” dream.
He was fresh off the success of “Juno,” which earned Reitman a Best Director Oscar nomination and the film a Best Picture nomination. His agent reached out to Lorne Michaels and relayed Reitman’s wish — to do a guest writing stint on “Saturday Night Live.” And, incredibly, it happened.
“It was like getting to suit up for the Los Angeles Lakers for one night,” Reitman told TheWrap. He and “SNL” writer Simon Rich stayed up until four in the morning on a Tuesday night working on ideas. On Wednesday, they took their three sketch ideas to the table read. “And then later that afternoon I got to be there for the moment when they come out of Lorne’s office and pinned a piece of paper to the wall,” Reitman said. That’s when he found out that one of his sketches...

Plot: In the ninety minutes before the live airing of the first episode of Saturday Night Live, a young Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle) desperately tries to keep NBC from pulling the plug while dealing with a cast, writers and crew in open rebellion.
Review: Comedy would be very different nowadays if not for Saturday Night Live‘s impact. Most noteworthy comedy film stars of the last four decades emerged from their ranks, and nearly fifty years since its premiere, it remains as vital as ever. Yet, the making of the show itself had become an almost mythological tale, with it a known fact that the young Lorne Michaels had to overcome overwhelming odds to make the show in the first place.
What Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night does is that it distills most of the big challenges Michaels had to overcome into one ninety-minute period. It’s a conceit that...
