With the film opening in theaters on December 20, The Walt Disney Studios has revealed new Mufasa: The Lion King posters and a “Music of Mufasa” featurette.

Walt Disney Records will release the songs only and deluxe versions of Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King original motion picture soundtrack. The soundtrack is available to pre-add and pre-order now.

The original songs were written by Grammy, Tony and Emmy Award winner and Kennedy Center Honor recipient Lin-Manuel Miranda, and produced by Grammy Award winner Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda, with additional music and performances by Lebo M.

Said Miranda, “‘The Lion King’ has an incredible musical legacy with music from some the greatest songwriters around, and I’m humbled and proud to be a part of it. It’s been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa’s story to life, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters.

The Walt Disney Studios has announced that Mufasa: The Lion King tickets are now on sale. Exploring the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands, the anticipated film opens in theaters on December 20, 2024.

In a new featurette, director Barry Jenkins, songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, and members of the ensemble cast take viewers behind the scenes of the film with some insight and personal inspiration. The studio has also released a TV spot and character banners for the film.

The big-screen adventure enlists Rafiki to relay the story of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone, until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline.

Eight new character posters for Mufasa: The Lion King have found their way online this morning (via Toonado.com) along with a new featurette to celebrate tickets for the live-action prequel going on sale. 

"Taka" will, of course, eventually be known as the villainous Scar, but it's Kiros who we expected to be this movie's big bad. We also see fan-favourites like Timon and Pumba, Rafiki, and Zazu. 

The final trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King was released at D23 Brazil (you can watch it here if you missed it) but we'd imagine Disney plans to pull out all the stops in the coming weeks.

Fans expected Jon Favreau's The Lion King to receive a follow-up of some sort, and this original story taking place long before we met Simba undeniably intriguing, especially with filmmaker Barry Jenkins at the helm.

Disney has just dropped the final trailer for Barry Jenkins' Mufasa: The Lion King (via Toonado.com) featuring younger versions of characters like Mufasa, Scar, Sarabi, Rafiki and Zazu before they called Pride Rock home.

Just like 2019's The Lion King, this movie looks visually stunning; the main difference here is that we're getting an original story rather than what many felt was little more than a shot-for-shot remake of the 1994 cartoon from filmmaker Jon Favreau.

Similar to this summer's awesome Transformers One, it looks like we'll meet many familiar characters in their early years and watch as the friendship between Mufasa and Taka (a.k.a. Scar) crumbles and ends with them becoming bitter enemies.

Tom Burke, who played the sort of Mad Max-esque character Praetorian Jack in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Maurizio Lombardi, who was recently seen as Inspector Pietro Ravini in the Netflix series Ripley, have been added to the cast of the Prime Video limited series Blade Runner 2099 – which is, of course, a continuation of the franchise that began with the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner and then got a long-awaited follow-up called Blade Runner 2049, which had Denis Villeneuve at the helm, in 2017. Deadline notes that Burke and Lombardi will both have recurring roles on the show, but details on their characters have not been revealed.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels, Game of Thrones was a breakthrough for HBO. Debuting in 2011, It straddled multiple eras of its network’s ownership and technology.

The series showed that massive audiences would respond to fantasy series with dense mythologies. It also included a massive number of characters and place names.

And even though the series eventually got beyond Martin’s published books, many fans were dissatisfied with how the series ended. But Game of Thrones remains mostly well-remembered.

Last night, Disney's show-stopping "Entertainment Showcase" panel concluded with Mufasa: The Lion King director Barry Jenkins, songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, and cast members Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Theo Somolu, Braelyn Rankins, and Anika Noni Rose hitting the stage.

A new minute-long TV spot for Mufasa: The Lion King has aired which confirms a new trailer is coming "tomorrow".

As with 2019's The Lion King, the visuals are nothing short of extraordinary. The difference this time, of course, is that we're getting a new story and not a shot-for-shot remake of the original animated movie. That was a real sticking point for some five years ago.

Willem Dafoe has been named Artistic Director of the Venice Biennale’s Theatre Department. Dafoe will hold the role for a two-year term from 2025 to 2026. The appointment was confirmed by the department board, headed by Pietrangelo Buttafuoco. “I was first surprised then happy to receive Pietrangelo Buttafuoco’s invitation to be the Director of the International Theatre Festival of La Biennale di Venezia 2025-2026,” Dafoe said. “I realize that I am known as a film actor, but I was born in the theatre, the theatre trained me and galvanized me. I am a stage animal. I am an actor. Theatre taught me about art and life. Disney on Monday released the first trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King.

Directed by Barry Jenkins, the music-filled film serves as both an origin story and follow-up to Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic movie The Lion King. That film was based on the 1994 Disney animated classic of the same name.

Along with the trailer release, it was revealed that Blue Ivy Carter will make her film debut voicing Kiara, daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala, while her mother, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, will reprise her role as Nala from the 2019 film.

The new film, which hits theaters Dec. 20, will tell the backstory of Simba’s father, Mufasa, an orphan who grew up to be a wise, powerful and compassionate ruler.

Prominent Black actors including No Time to Die star Lashana Lynch and Enola Holmes’ Susan Wokoma have signed an open letter decrying the abuse faced by Francesca Amewudah-Rivers after she was cast in a West End theatre production of Romeo & Juliet.

The Jamie Lloyd Company announced last month that Amewudah-Rivers will play Juliet alongside Tom Holland’s Romeo in the staging of William Shakespeare’s tragedy, which opens at the Duke of York’s Theatre on May 23.

More than 880 people have signed the open letter, which was organized by Wokoma and writer Somalia Nonyé Seaton. Signatories include Sheila Atim (The Woman King), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Secrets & Lies), Lolly Adefope (Ghosts), Freema Agyeman (Doctor Who), Wunmi Mosaku, and Tamara Lawrance (Time).

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, who was recently seen in the action film ‘Fighter’ is set to present an award at the upcoming edition of British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards. The actress earlier presented the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ at the 95th Academy Awards, last year.

The film is more a lyrical poem to a time and place, than a plot-driven drama, so it is best enjoyed when you can just embrace it’s dreamy memories of childhood friendship, warm family moments and young bittersweet romance, and let the lovely imagery and dreamy feeling float you downstream.

This lovely, dreamy piece of cinema art was written and directed by award-winning poet, photographer and filmmaker Raven Jackson, making her feature film debut. It is a lyrical film that powerfully evokes its place and time, and the people in that landscape.

British GQ hosted its biggest party of the year with The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White and Doctor Who‘s Ncuti Gatwa among the honorees!

The 26th annual GQ Men of the Year event, in association with Boss, was held on Wednesday night (November 15) at the Royal Opera House in London, England.

The other honorees included Andrew Scott and Phoebe Bridgers‘ band Boygenius.

Chicago – Reflective and observational films … as if the audience is inside looking out along with the the characters … are very rare and takes a quality creator to pull off. One such film is “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt” and it is written and directed by a quality creator, the poet-turned-filmmaker Raven Jackson.

The film is a visual tone poem, as a woman named Mack (Charleen McClure) goes from her childhood to adulthood learning her life lessons – with its growth, loves, heartache and memories – as a black woman in Mississippi, with her sister ally Josie (Moses Ingram) and various friends, lovers and family.

The first image in writer-director Raven Jackson’s All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt—a close-up of a hand squeezing a freshly caught fish, its reflective scales mirrored by the twinkling, gauzy light captured on 35mm by cinematographer Jomo Fray—quickly immerses us in the film’s world. The relationship between bodies and the natural world that surrounds them, mediated by the physical properties of film, is central to Jackson’s work. As the scene progresses, the camera’s focus remains resolutely on what may seem like its incidental textures, tracking the interplay of skin, earth, and water as if they were brushstrokes on a canvas.

The elemental poeticism of these images is clear evidence of Jackson’s promise as a filmmaker, and yet this opening sequence also points to why All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt amounts to a limited showcase for her talents. Essentially all of the film’s aesthetic,...

“I’m interested in patience,” she says ahead of her feature debut’s San Sebastian screening, following the Sundance premiere earlier this year.

“I am interested in slow cinema, even though in the U.S. it’s not as prominent. When I was in the edit [with Lee Chatametikool], I knew that many audience members are not used to such a pace. But that challenge excited me.”

“My short ‘Nettles’ took its time too, but I wonder to what degree it will continue with my next feature. There’s no world where it makes sense for a hug to last 15 seconds [like in ‘All Dirt Roads’] and I’m not sure if every one of my films will ask for such patience. If they do, I’m going to give it to them.”

As the wait continues for those dagnabbit major Hollywood studios (AMPTP) to stop dragging their feet and hash out a fair deal with the striking actors' guild (SAG-AFTRA) and writers' guild (WGA), indie wunderkind entertainment company A24 just keeps on trucking along. Although the studio recently elected to delay "Problemista," the feature directorial debut from "Saturday Night Live" alum and "Los Espookys" co-creator/star Julio Torres that picked up lots of critical acclaim from its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (read /Film's review), A24's Australian horror flick "Talk to Me" continues to do boffo business at the box office and even has a sequel in the works.

Meanwhile, the studio has yet to slow down its marketing for its upcoming slate of films, including "Dicks: The Musical" and the decidedly different sounding "All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt," another film from a first-time feature director that garnered raves at Sundance earlier this year.

Oscar winner Jenkins serves as the executive producer of the decades-spanning period piece, which was acquired by A24 at 2023 Sundance. “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt” will also screen during this year’s NYFF Main Slate lineup.

Per the official synopsis, the film is a lyrical, decades-spanning exploration across a woman’s life in Mississippi. Charleen McClure, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” breakout Moses Ingram, Reginald Helms Jr., and Zainab Jah star, with Sheila Atim and Chris Chalk rounding out the cast. The film follows a West African family in the South. Cinematographer Jomo Fray used 35mm film to capture the textured history of Mack, played by McClure.
