Chieh Yang, born in Taoyuan County of Taiwan at 1989, is a female Taiwan film director, screenwriter, producer and actress. She studies Radio & Television Dept. of National Chengchi University at Taipei during 2008-2013, and MFA-Film program of Columbia University at New York after 2014.
She joins school drama club in her high school and college life to accumulate experiences of stage performance. At 2010-2011, she produced documentary films to dig Taiwan social issues such as rural education, plastic cosmetic industry and so on to enrich her experiences of film production. Her first narrative short film "Her Dream Lovers" produced in this period attracts widely attentions and reporting of Taiwan media after Chieh Yang applied it for Short Film Corner of Cannes Film Festival at 2012 when she was exchanged to France at her third year of college.
Widely reporting of Taiwan media helps her production of graduate work "Starry Eyes". After graduating from college, she founded "Whoa Studio" with some friends and took cases such as production of commercial ads., music video and short film competition. Chieh Yang applied for MFA-Film program at the same time. At 2014, she got admission from Columbia University and then started to learn the essence of world-leading USA film industry at New York.
At 2016, the short film "Ping Pong Coach", which wrote and produced by Chieh Yang, got "Student Visionary Award" in the Tribeca Film Festival at New York. She also got "Best Editing Award" by "Cronos" directed by her in the Golden Harvest Award at Taipei. In an interview with Taiwan media, she said she hope to produce her first narrative feature film at Taiwan.
In another interview with media, she emphasized that most of her films before going to USA were inspired by the bedtime story her father told her when she was a child. Besides fascinated with fantasy movie and magical realism, she is interested in the culture differences and the immigration inner loneliness in the society after she studies at USA.
