A suburban London psychiatrist and his patients are kidnapped by aliens in this delightfully clunky, on-a-budget adventure

This UK-produced apocalyptic science-fiction yarn looks as if it was made with just enough budget to cover a couple of lights, petrol, the delightfully clunky visual effects – the digital equivalent of sticky-back plastic and pipe cleaners – and a few sandwiches for the cast and crew. But props are due to writer-director Simon Cox, the several dozen producers credited and cast and crew who sunk time, money and effort to make something so ludicrously ambitious with such meagre means, even if the end result is markedly uneven.

The main protagonist is Tom Dunn (Simon Haycock), a psychiatrist living in the London suburbs with his school-teacher wife Mandy (Lucy Drive), who has just discovered she’s pregnant. The Lebanese Censorship Bureau banned the British film, despite it being selected by the festival.

British Lgbt film Wasp has been banned from screening at the Beirut International Film Festival by the Lebanese Censorship Bureau.

Despite being selected by the festival’s programming team, the film has failed to receive the necessary permit from the country’s government to be screened during the event.

The move comes as a surprise as Hong Khaou’s Ben Whishaw-starring Lilting and Xavier Dolan’s Tom At The Farm - both of which highlight with Lgbt issues - were permitted to screen at the festival in 2014.

Wasp recently played at Britain’s Raindance Film Festival (Sept 23 - Oct 4), having debuted at FilmOut San Diego in May this year.

Exclusive: The distributor has picked up North American rights to the Lgbt drama from Swiss feature directorial debutant Philippe Audi-Dor.

Simon Haycock, Elly Condron and Hugo Bolton star in the tale of male lovers whose relationship and sexuality are tested when a female friend joins them at a family house in Provence.

Wasp premiered at the Boston Lgbt Film Festival and went on to screen at Film Out San Diego.

“I wanted to turn the cliché of the straight-homo binary around,” said Audi-Dor, who directed from his screenplay.

“For once have a gay character be attracted to the opposite-sex, in order to properly open up a general discussion on the complexity of sexuality.”

Breaking Glass CEO Rich Wolff negotiated the deal with Camille Pages of Wide Management and plans a DVD and VOD release in August.
