Since its inception decades ago, the Academy Awards have expanded its reputation of cinematic excellence, which honors legendary achievements while making dreams a reality. The upcoming Oscar race features an unusual situation where primary category nominations will not be dominated by big names only.
The 2025 Academy Awards presented different choices for nominations compared to the 2024 competition, which was dominated by Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer along with the Best Actress duel between Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone.

Without a doubt, this year's Best Actress race is a nail-biter. With frontrunners Demi Moore (The Substance) and Mikey Madison (Anora) having split the major precursor awards, prognosticators are divided between who will take home the top prize. Which leaves room for dark horse contender Fernanda Torres (I'm Still Here) to potentially pull off an upset.
Here are five reasons why the Brazilian actress could surprise everyone and take home the Oscar for Best Actress this Sunday.
See Video Interview: Fernanda Torres
1. She seized her momentum at a key time with the Golden Globe win
Torres solidified her status as a serious Oscar contender back in January when she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Actress. The winner of (either) Best Actress awards at the Globes has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Actress four times in the last six years. While there's no substantive overlap...

We admit to kicking this category down the road to see if the The Brutalist’s A.I. controversy would make any measurable ripples in this race—that is, outside the social media bubble of extremely online non-voters. And the plan was to keep things simple, if Adrien Brody followed his BAFTA coronation with a SAG victory, by sparing readers any unnecessary hemming and hawing and offering at the end of this article a reprint of the essay I wrote about Brody’s performance for this year’s New York Film Critics Circle gala.
But after Timothée Chalamet’s upset victory at the SAGs for his performance as a young Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, it’s no longer possible to call this one a done deal. And suddenly I’m forced to play the part of John Nash in A Beautiful Mind, like I did last year when...

The most eventual Oscar season in years will end on Sunday night with the 97th annual Academy Awards. According to the Gold Derby odds, several nominees should have their speeches prepared, including stars like Demi Moore (The Substance) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain). But who will win at the 2025 Oscars — and who could win? Ahead, the final 2025 Oscar predictions in all categories.
Best Picture
Anora
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Pérez
I’m Still Here
Nickel Boys
The Substance
Wicked
Who will win: Anora
Despite the late push from Conclave, with its key wins at the BAFTA Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards, it would be an overwhelming upset if Anora lost Best Picture on Sunday. Since 2000, only three movies have won top honors from the Producers Guild and Directors Guild and subsequently lost at the Oscars: Brokeback Mountain, La La Land, and 1917.

We have ourselves a race! The Oscar contests for Best Actor and Best Actress got especially interesting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday because the winners disagreed with another industry peer group honor, the BAFTA Awards. Arriving on a busy blue carpet for a gray day at the beach, guests at the 2025 Indie Spirit Awards agreed: It’s time to Make the Movies Messy Again.
Inside the ceremony tent, host Aidy Bryant put it perfectly when she said, “It’s been a great year for film and a bad year for human life.” Hundreds of the most important decision-makers and visionary artists championing creative independence today gathered in Santa Monica, California on Saturday to honor the best in boundary-breaking film and TV.
“Anora” and “Baby Reindeer” won the most categories in several tight races, but the show’s main source of dramatic tension came from the countless news items surrounding a tough awards season. From fraught talk of cultural fascism to economic critiques of the entertainment industry, honorees and their peers predicted an uncertain but fiery future for filmmakers, cast, and crew. Actors Michael Urie and Lily Gladstone are opening up about how the war President Donald Trump is waging against diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives might affect Hollywood.
Both Gladstone and Urie attended the SAG Awards Sunday in Los Angeles, where they were nominated for Hulu’s Under the Bridge and the Apple TV+ series Shrinking, respectively.
“I am concerned, and I am very worried about about all of the minority groups that this administration seems to be going after,” Urie said when asked by The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet if he’s concerned about how the Trump administration’s stance against Dei initiatives might reverse the strides Hollywood has made in recent years in terms of representation. “And [I’m worried] about the big corporations that are taking it in such stride — the companies that are rolling back their own Dei just because the administration has rolled back the federal Dei.

Charlie Kaufman is getting back in the director’s chair. The auteur, who has mostly focused on his screenplays since helming 2020’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” will write and direct short story adaptation “Later the War.” IndieWire can confirm that Eddie Redmayne, Tessa Thompson, and Patsy Ferran will lead the film. World of Reel first announced the project, with Deadline following up Monday.
“Later the War” follows a man (Redmayne) who manufactures dreams for people but instead begins to create nightmares for his clients. The script is based on Iddo Gefen’s short story “Debby’s Dream House,” which is part of the “Jerusalem Beach” collection.
Ken Kao and Josh Rosenbaum of Waypoint Entertainment will produce “Later the War,” along with Sarah Green of Brace Cove Productions and Steven Demmler. The film will be fully financed by Suraj Maraboyina’s 131 Pictures, with WME Independent and CAA Media Finance co-representing...

For the second straight year, Netflix live-streamed the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The experience went extremely well, proving once again that the streamer is getting ever-better at such events. Maybe the SAG Awards won't bring the same viewing numbers as an NFL game, but the ceremony is just as worthy of a watch.
Netflix also came away with two winners on Sunday. Emilia Pérez missed out on Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, but Zoe Saldaña won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. That trend hopefully will continue when the Oscars are held in March. She is worthy of another win.
Jessica Gunning won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie for her work in Baby Reindeer. She was also worthy of the victory, and won an Emmy in the same kind of category for the role.

With tight races for Lead Actor and Lead Actress, suspense ran high before Netflix’s two-hour no-longer ad-free 31st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night, where swearing was allowed. Conclave won Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, becoming the first movie to defeat Anora at one of the top industry guilds.
The win allows the Oscars Best Picture race to keep some intrigue heading into next weekend. Anora had previously won top honors at the Producers Guild Awards, Directors Guild Awards, and Writers Guild Awards. Since the SAG Awards started giving out its film ensemble honor, only five movies have swept the top industry guilds: American Beauty, Slumdog Millionaire, No Country for Old Men, Argo, and Everything Everywhere All at Once. All five movies won Best Picture.
Now, this is a race. Conclave heads into the Oscars next week with some significant wind at its back, having also won Best Film honors at the BAFTA Awards last week. It is also heavily favored to win Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing. If Conclave pulls off the Best Picture upset,...

Demi Moore underscored the importance of connecting with others while accepting her prize for The Substance at the SAG Awards 2025 ceremony.
The star won for outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role during Sunday’s event. While delivering her acceptance speech, Moore recalled the “deeply meaningful” moment when she received her SAG card as a teen in 1978.
“You have all been my greatest teachers, and I am so, so grateful that I have continued over these so many years to be able to try — and sometimes succeed and sometimes fail — but to be able to keep going,” Moore told her fellow actors from the stage.
She also shared some advice for performers who are still establishing their career paths. “As these actors who are having to do it all, I just encourage you, don’t lose sight of the human connection,” Moore said. “That’s the work that we do.

It’s always fitting that the Screen Actors Guild Awards take place at Los Angeles’s Shrine Auditorium, because this awards show is a kind of shrine itself: An occasion for Hollywood’s best and brightest to come and pay tribute, with devotional flourishes, to the art of acting. Now, the 2025 SAG Awards winners list has been fully revealed, and indeed you heard the word “craft” a few times: Actors love to pepper that word into their acceptance speeches as if they’re back at the Actors Studio.

The actors have weighed in on the 2025 Oscar race — and it's potentially game-changing.
Sunday’s 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards saw several of this year’s key competitors face off one last time before the Academy Awards on March 2 and the ceremony delivered more than a few surprises. Perhaps none was more significant than Timothée Chalamet winning Best Actor for his turn as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown in an upset over the awards-season favorite, The Brutalist star Adrien Brody. Or maybe it was Conclave thwarting high-powered rivals Anora and Wicked to land the night's biggest prize of best film ensemble.
Wicked came into the evening with a record-tying five nominations for film categories but failed to win anything. Anora, after a dominating run in precursor awards in recent weeks, finished 0-for-3.

The victory was Moore’s third among the major Oscar precursor ceremonies. She previously won best actress prizes at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards.

Demi Moore won Best Actress for The Substance at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards, adding another wrinkle to the Oscar race.
Moore, who was in first place in the Gold Derby odds, beat Mikey Madison (Anora), Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez).
Still in first place in the Oscar odds, Moore dethroned Madison as the Oscar frontrunner following her Golden Globe victory and inspirational speech, and became the favorite to win SAG, a group that loves a narrative. She also collected the Critics Choice Award and numerous regional critics prizes in the past month — all non-industry awards — but when it was time for the industry to weigh in, BAFTA crowned Madison Best Actress last week. Anora has also shown to be strong with the industry, taking the Producers Guild, Directors Guild, and Writers Guild of America Awards, reestablishing itself as the Best Picture frontrunner.

Actors… Many love to hate on this class of artist, perhaps denoting them as divas or neurotics or in need of parental affection, but those who can truly grasp their commitment to craft and truth understand how valuable they are to our shared cultural experience. This is why every year, the Screen Actors Guild Awards serve as an important marker in the awards season hustle and bustle. Often scheduled the weekend before the Oscars (as it is this year), the SAG Awards are a reminder of how vital performers are to the end result of what ends up on screen in theaters and homes around the world.

To those who have loved Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, Jazzy might be perceived as a milder play on the same notes. Morrisa Maltz’s Jazzy reveals a genial narrative pleasure in the accompanying ecstasy and the pangs of distress in preadolescence and adolescence. This age is marked by conflicting emotions, burgeoning mannerisms, and uninhibited living. The film vigorously examines the noise that is part and parcel of traversing this part of one’s life. With the specificity of her detailing and the acuteness of her observations on childhood, Maltz sheds light on the vagaries of a profound period in a girl’s life. To add to this, Jazzy is a companion piece to Maltz’s The Unknown Country, where Lily Gladstone’s Tana undertakes a journey to connect with her Oglala Lakota roots.

These seven movies prove Apple TV+ is making a serious play for your movie nights.
I find myself on Apple TV+ a lot these days, and while most people think of the streamer for its high-quality TV shows, it’s actually been making a serious play for your movie nights, too. Apple TV+ has been stacking its lineup with a mix of big-name projects and under-the-radar films that are actually pretty good - including the recent action-comedy “Wolfs,” starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. The selection isn’t as deep as some other streamers, but what’s there is worth a watch. If you’re looking for something new to check out, here are the top 7 movies streaming on Apple TV+ right now.

The potential next collaboration between Martin Scorsese and his longtime muse and lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio has just been revealed. Also, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is part of it for some wild reason.
According to an exclusive report from Deadline, the pitch for Scorsese's latest project following his Oscar-nominated film "Killers of the Flower Moon" has DiCaprio, Johnson, and Emily Blunt attached to star. Deadline also provided the pitch's "thumbnail description," which reads, "Imagine Robert De Niro's Jimmy the Gent character from 'Goodfellas,' but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime in Hawaii." The outlet also notes that the film will be written by Nick Bilton (a Vanity Fair editor who directed the 2021 documentary "Fake Famous") and says that the "film focuses on a turbulent time on the island paradise when an aspiring...

After a whiplash of an awards season for Emilia Pérez, the dust has settled in terms of the Netflix Spanish-language musical’s Oscar potential. Now that the Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards unveiled their results, the French export is the favorite to win Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, Best International Film, and Best Song for “El Mal,” according to the combined Gold Derby odds.
But there is still one more obstacle for Saldaña to overcome: the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Feb. 23. She’s competing there against Ariana Grande (Wicked), Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl), and Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson).
Since the unprecedented controversy surrounding the movie’s lead actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, over her resurfaced bigoted social media posts and subsequent string of statements and apologies, Saldaña has distanced herself from her costar, who made history as the first openly transgender...

BAFTA Awards voters often go by the beat of their own drums, and that independence was fully displayed during Sunday’s ceremony. After winning top awards from the Producers Guild, Directors Guild, and Writers Guild, Best Picture frontrunner Anora won only two awards on Sunday — but its victory for Mikey Madison in Best Actress was significant. Meanwhile, after flopping with the major guilds, The Brutalist rebounded with four wins, including Best Actor for Adrien Brody and Best Director for Brady Corbet. However, The Brutalist couldn’t win Best Film, falling to Conclave, which also won three other awards. Ahead, the biggest takeaways from the BAFTA Awards results and what it all might mean for the Oscars race as winner voting continues until Tuesday.

Under picturesque snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, Timothée Chalamet braved the chill in Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz on Friday, stopping to sign autographs for a polite group of fans and collectors. The actor was in town to promote “A Complete Unknown,” his Bob Dylan biopic launching in Germany on Feb. 27 — but let’s be honest, there’s another reason for the European detour: Oscar campaigning.
While none of the eager autograph hunters will be checking his name on a ballot, multiple AMPAS voters later attended the film’s glittering Berlinale screening, making this yet another crucial pit stop on the road to the Dolby Theatre.
A short flight away and two weeks earlier, Demi Moore was making her presence felt at Armani Privé’s spring 2024 show during Couture Week in Paris. Her body horror thriller “The Substance” — directed by Parisian filmmaker Coralie Fargeat — has been making waves all season, with Moore...

Sabrina Elba will join the cast of “Nuur.” The upcoming feature from director Lula Ali Ismaïl (“Dhalinyaro”) is being produced by Scythia Films, the banner behind the Oscar-nominated “The Apprentice.” Elba joins previously announced cast members Omar Abdi (“The Gravedigger’s Wife”) and Hamza Fouad (“Riverdale”).
The film is adapted from the novel “The Youth of God” by Hassan Ghedi Santur, who also wrote the script. In it, Nuur, the title character, is a sensitive and academically gifted 17-year-old boy growing up in Toronto’s Somali community in Dixon. Elba will portray Haawo, the resilient Somali mother to Nuur and his older brother, Ayuub. When Haawo lived in Mogadishu, Somalia, she worked as a flight attendant and was married to a successful architect. Years later, she is depressed, grappling with a failed marriage and stuck in a dead-end job at Walmart. When Nuur goes missing, she goes on a journey to bring him home.

Sometimes, the British Film Academy paves the road to the Oscars. Sometimes, it doesn’t. Last year, the BAFTA Awards crowned the eventual Oscar winners in the top eight categories, with wins for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr., and Da’Vine Joy Randolph and screenplay victories for American Fiction and Anatomy of a Fall. However, BAFTA and the Oscars split on all eight above-the-line categories two years ago. British voters embraced All Quiet on the Western Front that year over the eventual Oscars juggernaut, Everything Everywhere All at Once.
The expectation at the moment — mainly because the race was so crowded before Anora won at the Producers Guild Awards and Directors Guild Awards — is that this year might offer something in the middle. Ahead are three key BAFTA Awards categories whose results might significantly impact the Oscars.
