The Expendables franchise started strong with an impressive ensemble of legendary action stars in the first installment. The introduction of the "Young Expendables" in the third film set up a potential new direction for the franchise. However, The Expendables 4's lackluster performance and failure to capitalize on the young recruits led to its downfall.
Before The Avengers, the greatest crossover of all time might have been 2010's The Expendables. Directed by Sylvester Stallone, the over-the-top action flick's premise hinges on its impressive ensemble cast of legendary action stars. The first installment boasted not just Stallone, who plays Barney Ross the leader of the titular elite group of mercenaries but greats like Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Bruce Willis, and, notably, 2024's biggest action star, Jason Statham. While The Expendables is light on plot, its top-notch action sequences helped the film gross a staggering $274.5 million.

Key takeaways: The Expendables franchise needs new action stars to revitalize it after the fourth movie's poor performance at the box office. Hollywood should consider hiring younger talent from the '90s to the 2020s to prevent the franchise from feeling stale and repetitive. The inclusion of professional boxer Bud Crawford, martial artist Mackenyu, and actors like Pedro Pascal and Michael B. Jordan would bring authenticity, talent, and fresh energy to The Expendables 5.
If there's one thing that The Expendables 5 may need, it's an injection of new, exciting action stars to revitalize the franchise. Stallone and friends may have been on to something with previous entries in the franchise, but the third movie didn't fare well and even returning to an R-rating for the fourth movie didn't help. The Expendables 4's abysmal performance at the box office is a clear indicator that the series could use new blood to...

“Dancing With the Stars” Season 32 kicked off right on schedule on Tuesday night, with all 15 couples, even temporary holdout actor Matt Walsh, hitting the dance floor for the first time.
“Bachelorette” star Charity Lawson and partner Artem Chigvintsev earned the highest score of the evening for their Tango, which judge Bruno Tonioli proclaimed to be “exquisite,” while Carrie Ann Inaba said it was “stunning,” especially for Week 1.
Charity took the lead from singer Jason Mraz, whose Cha-Cha-Cha with Daniella Karagacha to his own song, “I Feel Like Dancing,” prompted Bruno to dub him “the one to watch.” Jason, who claimed his higher-than-average dancing skills were due to an “extra vertebra,” earned a “7” from each judge.
After the audience votes were added, “Rhobh” star Mauricio Umansky and “Veep” star Matt Walsh were in the bottom two. Matt’s “non-traditional” Cha-Cha-Cha with partner Koko Iwasaki received a “4,” from each judge, a decision the audience booed.

The Expendables 4 is ranked as the worst movie in the franchise, lacking enjoyable elements and wasting new additions to the cast. The Expendables 3 suffers from a PG-13 rating and the inclusion of a younger cast, deviating from the franchise's DNA and resulting in lackluster action. The Expendables 2 offers cleaner and flashier action, capturing the vibe of a 90s-era action film, but the original The Expendables is still the best.
Now that The Expendables 4 is out, here is a complete ranking of every The Expendables movie. The franchise created by Sylvester Stallone was made in an effort to bring together a group of action stars from the 80s and 90s in a collaborative effort that paid homage to the films that helped define their careers. Viewers have seen Stallone share the screen with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and...

The Expendables 4 is set to hit theaters in 2023, but it seems that some cast members from The Expendables 3 won't be returning. Thorn, played by Glen Powell, was a important character in The Expendables 3 but is not confirmed to appear in The Expendables 4. Thorn's absence in the next installment would be puzzling, especially since he and the other new recruits were formally inducted into the team in the previous movie.
The Expendables 4 is bringing the action hero ensemble franchise back to theaters, but one new crew member of The Expendables 3 may not be returning for the team's next ride. The Expendables first took off in 2010, with Sylvester Stallone leading a crew of action movie veterans in a throwback to '80s and '90s action films. The Expendables franchise hit its first snag with 2014's The Expendables 3, which underperformed its two predecessors due to its ill-advised PG-13 rating.

“So You Think You Can Dance” judge Nigel Lythgoe praised season 15 contestant Jensen Arnold and her entire dancing family in the third week of live shows, saying it would be nice if someone created a reality show around sisters with actual talent. He didn’t mention any untalented sisters by name, but it wasn’t hard to interpret that Kardashian subtweet. Whether or not the Arnold sisters get their own reality show someday, who’s your favorite member of the dance family: Jensen or her trailblazing big sister Lindsay Arnold? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Like Jensen, Lindsay got her start on “Sytycd.” She competed in the ninth season of the show during the summer of 2012. She only made it as far as the Top 8, but she found success the following year when she became a professional dancer during the 16th season of rival competition series “Dancing with the Stars.

Though The Expendables 3 was a substantial box office disappointment, drawing less than its two predecessors both domestically and internationally, a fourth installment in the star-studded, testosterone-fueled action franchise is still happening, according to sources.
The Expendables 4, which is being greenlit with a sizable $100 million-plus budget, is getting the green light after Nu Image and Millennium struck pre-sales deals with Sp International Pictures on behalf of Ssxh Beijing and Max Screen Film Distribution to make the movie happen.
Those deals include equity investments in the project and give Chinese distribution rights – $78 million of the last installment’s $206 million haul came from the country, where The Expendables is apparently a beloved and extremely lucrative series instead of the more nostalgia-infused amusement it is stateside. Or, as Steven Paul of Sp International puts it:
“What seems to work in their favour in China, is that these movies are good old-fashioned shoot ’em up entertainment.

Over the last week or so, Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance in Southpaw just became his main shot at Oscar attention. Part of that has to do with people seeing his film, which opens on Friday, but most of it has to do with one of his other 2015 releases being pushed back. That one is the drama Demolition, so this boxing flick is his primary chance, unless Everest becomes a big player. As for the movie itself, it’s a solid sports drama, mainly elevated by Gyllenhaal, who delivers yet another outstanding performance. At this point, he might just be the most consistent and interesting actor in Hollywood. Southpaw is a boxing drama about Billy Hope (Gyllenhaal) a champion who has fought his way to the top and has it all. A loving wife (Rachel McAdams), a cute daughter (Oona Laurence), millions, and a championship belt, to boot. Then, tragedy strikes...

The clip, “Title Fight,” features Gyllenhaal’s character Billy Hope encountering his friend and manager, played by 50 Cent (aka Curtis Jackson). I'm really only writing about this because I found it humorous this "clip" (which is actually a trailer) for Southpaw actually premiered on Jay-z's music streaming service Tidal last week, but in order to watch the video you had to actually sign up for the service. While there was an option for a free trial that "free" trial did require you give over your credit card details so they could charge you later on down the line if you didn't cancel your free trial in time. I'm sure the move managed to gain the service a few extra subscribers that will eventually become ex-subscribers, but it's just funny what companies will do to use silly things such as movie trailers to pad their stats and get an extra buck out of anyone they can. That said, here's the brief trailer for Southpaw, no subscription required. yt id="5FOjuRxzUGg" width...

Another one of Jake Gyllenhaal's most anticipated movies this year is the boxing drama Southpaw from director Antoine Fuqua in which Gyllenhaal plays boxer Billy "The Great" Hope, the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion, However, a tragic accident sends him into a downward spiral. His daughter is taken by Child Services and his home repossessed by the bank until a washed up former boxer named Tick (Forest Whitaker) agrees to take Billy under his wing, rebuilding him into a new man. Written by Kurt Sutter ("Sons of Anarchy"), the film co-stars Rachel McAdams, Naomie Harris, Victor Ortiz, 50 Cent, Clare Foley, Beau Knapp, Oona Laurence and Rita Ora. Along with the new trailer, we also have Enimem's song "Phenomenal" which will be featured in the film. Eminem will exec produce the soundtrack, but even more interesting is the fact he was once tapped to play the lead role, but reportedly dropped out to focus on music.

When we last saw Jake Gyllenhaal on screen, he wasn’t looking too hot, going gaunt to play a sociopathic reporter in Dan Gilroy’s excellent Nightcrawler, and this summer will find the actor transforming yet again, as he bulks up to play a battered boxer in Southpaw. A new trailer for the Antoine Fuqua-directed drama has cast further light on the story, and if the compelling look given here is indicative of the film as a whole, Gyllenhaal could be duking it out with the best of them in this year’s awards race.
In Southpaw, Gyllenhaal’s fighter, Billy Hope, endures punishment in and out of the ring, as his massively successful career is shattered by the murder of his loving wife (Rachel McAdams). Falling into despair, the boxer loses his grip professionally and personally, leaving child protective services to take his daughter (Oona Laurence) away from him.

I listed it as one of my 20 most anticipated films arriving this summer, but I also fear Southpaw might be a bit of a stinker. I didn't watch the first trailer after hearing it was a bit spoilerish, but I did peep a few seconds of this one and the brawl at what appears to be an awards ceremony followed by the gunshot and the death of... someone (maybe his longtime trainerc) seems a little on the nose, not to mention a little Rocky III, which isn't all that bad... Rocky III might be a little steeped in stupidity, but it was still fun, the question is whether or not this movie will have a little fun, or if it will be too overly melodramatic. I don't know, maybe I'm just nervous because I got my hopes up a little too high for this one. sb id="1519073" height="281" width="500" From...

The May 1 release of Avengers: Age of Ultron marks the "official" start of the 2015 Summer Movie Season and with that in mind, it's only appropriate to offer up a look forward at what's ahead over the next four months. What is ahead over the next four monthsc Well, a lot of movies that cost a lot of money with a few smaller features mixed in for good measure, and as much as some of us may lament the fact studios have become so franchise focused, it's hard not to admit a desire to see some of these bigger features. As a means of whittling down the flock of films arriving over the next several months I've chosen to take a look at my 20 most anticipated, which does mean there are bound to be some titles I probably ought to mention, but didn't make the list for a variety of reasons.

The year 2015 is shaping up to be a very exciting time at the movies. Blockbuster sequels like Star Wars and Avengers plus exciting new adventures from Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are arriving over the next year. Here is a list of the highly anticipated movies I’m looking forward to in 2015.
Please share with us the movies your most looking forward to by reaching out to us on Twitter and Facebook.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
The assembled team of superheroes return featuring Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk and two new additions, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The trailer showed a rather dark side that is sure to accompany a bigger and louder sequel. I enjoyed the first movie, but something tells me this one will top it.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz.
From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and starring Academy Award nominated Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Brokeback Mountain) comes a story of tragedy, loss and the painful road to redemption… Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal, display of offensive fighting…one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame.
With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral. His days now an endless haze of alcohol and prescription drugs,...

In case you hadn't heard, "Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter teamed up with "Training Day" and "The Equalizer" director Antoine Fuqua for the new boxing drama "Southpaw." Harvey Weinstein has been touting it since he showed footage of Gyllenhaal "training" at Cannes last May. Judging from the first preview, it may be box office heaven for The Weinstein Company. We'd warn you about spoilers, but this is one trailer that pretty much puts it all out there. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Billy Hope, a champion junior middleweight boxer who seemingly has it all. A beautiful and loving wife (Rachel McAdams), an adorable daughter (Oona Laurence) and an opulent lifestyle. When tragedy strikes Hope hits rock bottom until he decides to pick up the pieces of his life by hanging out at a small-time gym run by Forest Whitaker. You can predict the entire movie's plot based on this new preview,...

The first Southpaw trailer has hit and doesn’t shy away from taking you through each act of the movie, so if you like your trailers to be subtle this isn’t for you. Jake Gyllenhaal leads the film (which was once a project for Eminem) and has a lot to fight for it seems. Besides that the trailer shows too much and doesn’t feel like a serious contender for its actors, I’ll give it a chance because I’m a sucker for a good comeback story. Here’s the official synopsis:

Here is the result of Jake Gyllenhaal’s hard work transforming his body into Junior Middleweight champ Billy “The Great” Hope for Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw, the Kurt Sutter- and Richard Wenk-scripted pic that the Weinstein Company will release July 31. Gyllenhaal dropped jaws in November when the first photo from the movie was released, showing he had gained 15 pounds of pure muscle to leave his Nightcrawler character — for which he earned a Golden Globe nom — well in the rearview mirror.
The first trailer shows the effort will be worth it: The tale of a champ who loses everything in a personal tragedy and is forced to fight his way to redemption looks perfectly gritty and rough around the edges, hallmarks you’d expect from a Sutter (Sons Of Anarchy) and Fuqua (Training Day) tie-up. Then throw in a fully committed Gyllenhaal and co-stars Rachael McAdams, Forest Whitaker, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson,...

Boxing isn’t about how hard you hit, as the old Rocky saying goes, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keeping moving forward. It’s an adage that will ring true for Billy “The Great” Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Southpaw, a down-on-his-luck fighter who must overcome a family tragedy in order to win back custody of his daughter.
As with most of these underdog stories, it’s an arc that will see Gyllenhaal’s character enter the ring once more for the so-called “fight of his life.” But beyond the familiar narrative, there’s certainly reason to be excited for the upcoming drama. For one, Training Day‘s Antoine Fuqua is in the director’s chair, with Forest Whitaker, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and Rachel McAdams rounding out Southpaw‘s ensemble cast.

I don’t know what catalyzed Jake Gyllenhaal into the career resurgence he is in right now, but I’m excited for whatever he is going to do next.

Southpaw follows Hope as he struggles through a tragedy and tries to get himself back in shape to become a contender once again. The first trailer for Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal has arrived as director Antoine Fuqua has definitely sought to bring us a "down in the trenches" boxing drama with an impressive cast. Said cast also includes Rachel McAdams, Naomie Harris, Forest Whitaker, Victor Ortiz, Tyrese Gibson, 50 Cent, Clare Foley, Beau Knapp, Oona Laurence and Rita Ora. Southpaw—the Weinstein Company boxing movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, directed by Antoine Fuqua, and written by Kurt Sutter and Richard Wenk—has set a release date of July 31. Gyllenhaal, who dropped weight for last year's Nightcrawler, clearly hit the gym to portray Billy “The Great” Hope, the troubled Junior Middleweight champion whose life is spiraling downward when a washed up former boxer (Forest Whitaker) takes him under his wing. The actor added 25 pounds of muscle during six months of training. "I watched him vomit in the gym and almost pass out," Fuqua recently told EW. "I watched him take gut shots to the ribs,...
