Rod Stewart will play the coveted “Legend” slot at the 2025 Glastonbury festival, joining an impressive roster of previous “legends” – from Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones to James Brown and David Bowie – who performed at “tea time” on Sunday at the famed British music fest.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that I’ll be playing @glastofest 2025!,” Stewart posted on Instagram (see it below). “After all these years, I’m proud and ready and more than able to take the stage again to pleasure and titillate my friends at Glastonbury in June. I’ll see you there!”
Stewart last played Glastonbury in 2002, headlining with Coldplay and Stereophonics. Today’s news – which makes Stewart the only performer to ever have both headlined the fest and performed in the Legend slot – arrives shortly after the 79-year-old Stewart announced that he will retire from “large-scale world tours” at the end of 2025.

It features the final recording of Jeff Beck along with contributions by Bruce Springsteen, David Gilmour, Slash, Ronnie Wood, Joan Jett, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, and Sting.
The song came out a week ago, but it was difficult to discern who was playing what part throughout the ten-minute song.

Mark Knopfler has teamed up with a host of fellow guitar legends to record a version of his song “Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)” to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.
The Dire Straits frontman tapped Eric Clapton, Slash (Guns N’ Roses), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Brian May (Queen), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Pete Townshend (The Who), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Bruce Springsteen, Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), Joan Jett, and many more, forming what he has dubbed “Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes.” Notably, the star-studded version opens with the final recorded guitar track by the late Jeff Beck.
Knopfler’s longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher handled the production of the track, which might be the greatest assemblage of guitar talent to co-exist on a single song. The Sgt. Pepper‘s-style artwork was created by Sir Peter Blake.

Noah Kahan is back with the latest Stick Season re-release: a fresh cut of “Homesick” featuring a new verse from Sam Fender.
First announced earlier this week, the augmented version of “Homesick” follows a series of duet cuts Kahan has shared commemorating the one-year anniversary of Stick Season’s 2022 release, including collaborations with Gracie Abrams, Hozier, Kacey Musgraves, Lizzy McAlpine, and Post Malone.
Now, the duet version of “Homesick” builds upon the nostalgic reflection of the original thanks to a new verse from Fender, detailing his upbringing in Newcastle, England. In lengthy press statements, the artists explained how the collaboration grew out of a mutual respect that they had for each other.
“I come from a very different place than Sam did… but it felt like I had grown up the same,” Kahan said. “The nostalgia, pride, bitterness, confusion, and anger that Sam wrote about feeling was so similar to...

Lorna Tucker’s documentary about homelessness and ways to help end it will be heading to UK cinemas in February.
Director Lorna Tucker has turned her own experiences of homelessness into a touching, rousing documentary. Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son is heading to UK screens 16 February 2024 and arguably, it’s exactly the film we need right now as we face an unprecedented housing crisis. The film is narrated by Colin Firth.
But the future didn’t always look too bright for Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son. The team had to crowdfund in order to secure a theatrical release and they’ve now hit that milestone. Their Kickstarter campaign met the £30 000 goal just recently and Sam Fender, Adam Buxton and Bryan Adams, who wrote a song for the film, are among some of the project’s supporters.

Popular English alternative rock and indie sensation Sam Fender was forced to cancel his Leeds Music Festival set multiple times due to medical emergencies in the crowd. Telling the crowd to calm down, the 29-year-old singer stopped his set on August 26 evening as a fan required medical help in the crowd, telling the packed audience: “We need some help over here, let’s stop.”
He went on to ask: “You ok? We need help over here – we’re going to have to calm down,” mirror.co.uk reported.
A source at The Mirror added: “We’re not sure what happened but Sam acted very quickly and made sure that nothing happened until the medics and security got the fan out of the crowd.”

UK singer-songwriter Sam Fender played the second of two homecoming concerts on Saturday (June 10th) in Newcastle, and he was joined by a special guest for the occasion: AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson.
Johnson took the stage for renditions of the AC/DC classics “Back in Black” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.” Both tunes are from 1980’s iconic Back in Black album, the band’s first LP featuring Johnson, after he replaced the late Bon Scott.
Considering AC/DC haven’t performed since 2016, a cameo from Johnson is a rare occurrence. Fender and company were up for the moment, knocking out joyful, rousing renditions (as seen in fan footage of the concert).
Johnson, in particular, seemed to relish being onstage once again. Back in 2016, he was forced to step away from AC/DC’s US tour due to hearing loss and was famously replaced by Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses.

Emily Eavis’s latest Glastonbury headliner announcement felt like an apology. Usually, organisers have fun by hiding clues near Worthy Farm – a poster in a charity shop window revealing Stormzy’s Pyramid Stage slot in 2019, for instance, or a mysterious “crop circle” for Radiohead in 2017. This time, though, Eavis’s announcement was made via a discussion about the fact that 2023’s headliners are male, all-white, all over again. Guns N’ Roses, Arctic Monkeys, Elton John.
As the news broke, music fans on social media swiftly began questioning why Lana Del Rey or Lizzo weren’t headlining over one of the current trio. “[Lizzo] could totally headline,” Eavis said of the Grammy-winning artist, who is playing two shows at London’s O2 Arena this month. “Many of the artists could. But the headline slot had already been promised to someone else.”

Awards ceremonies like the Brits can always do better, but by now they’re just an excuse for a party
There was a five-headed elephant in the room at what was otherwise a strangely flat affair at the Brit Awards. As is tradition with music ceremonies, a row flared up over representation after the nominations were announced. The gender-neutral Artist of the Year category was entirely made up of male artists: Central Cee, Fred Again, George Ezra, Harry Styles and Stormzy.
The switch from gendered categories was implemented in 2021 after Sam Smith – who came out as non-binary two years earlier – urged awards shows to be “reflective of the society we live in”. At the first non-gendered awards show in 2022, Adele walked away with the Artist of the Year prize, for which Little Simz, Sam Fender, Dave and Ed Sheeran had also been nominated.
Women fared well across the board, with Olivia Rodrigo winning Best International Song, Wolf Alice taking home the British Group prize, Becky Hill for British Dance Act,...

Directed by Hector Dockrill the beautifully cinematic video follows the relationship, and unconditional bond between a mother (played by Niamh Algar) and her son (played by George Jaques), navigating their way through meandering moments of adolescence and adulthood.
The return of Lewis Capaldi has been characteristically disruptive, in the most exciting way. Rocketing straight to the top of the UK singles chart in September with comeback single ‘Forget Me’, his third UK number 1 which quickly became Gold-certified and smashed 100 million streams globally, making him the fifth artist this year to have a single go straight in at Number 1 in its first week,...

December 12, 2022 – Sam Fender is very pleased to release a new live album, Live From Finsbury Park. The album captures Sam’s scintillating sell-out performance in front of 45,000 fans earlier this Summer in London. As Sam’s biggest headline show to date, and straight off the back of his show-stealing performance at Glastonbury Festival, the Finsbury Park show paid testament to an incredible twelve months for an artist whose rise has been meteoric.
The album is released as a standalone double coloured vinyl through Polydor Records/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. It also then feature as a “Live Deluxe Edition” of Seventeen Going Under on double CD and include B-sides and the “Live From Finsbury Park” recordings.
Two new tracks feature on the deluxe edition, the recently shared “Wild Grey Ocean” and the previously unheard, “Little Bull of Blithe.” Both tracks were part of the original Seventeen...

Sam Fender has just been announced as one of the headliners for Reading and Leeds festival (9 December).
While sharing the news to his Instagram page, the North Shields artist recalled a story from when he attended Leeds festival 10 years ago as a punter.
During his time attending the festival, Fender told how he was apparently saved from a tent fire by a “young hero from Sheffield“, who urinated on the flames to put them out.
“Little did he know he’d just saved Reading and Leeds’s 2023 headliner,” Fender joked.
Announcing the news alongside a picture of the official line up, Fender wrote: “I first went to Leeds festival 10 years ago as a teenager, me and Deano [childhood friend and guitarist] spent the entire week launching hot dogs out of a gazebo pole at random crowds of lads chanting ‘Yorkshire Yorkshire’.”

The BBC has confirmed that this year’s Top of the Pops Christmas Special will still go ahead despite reports that it had been axed.
The festive special will air as usual, hosted by BBC Radio 1’s Clara Amfo and Jack Saunders.
Top of the Pops stopped being broadcast weekly in 2006, but has continued to air its festive special annually.
In a series of reports this week, it was claimed that the show will be shelved, per an article published in The Sun. The piece alleged that “BBC Scrooges” had axed the special after 57 years on TV.
A source told the publication: “[BBC] bosses felt the cost involved in creating a one-off show like this were too high to justify. Creating the studio and bringing together a string of artists to perform for just this programme required a disproportionate amount of resources.”

I’ve never felt so naked in my whole life,” says Jacob Slater, the man behind the reins of rock band Wunderhorse. The Hertfordshire-born frontman is centre stage at his sold-out show at London’s Lafayette, 600 pairs of eyes transfixed by him. As he roars through a rollicking set of gritty rock, his face crinkles, his body bucks. Pouring out of him are vignettes of teenage trauma, delivered with a preacher’s zeal. He bares his soul; his heart is open.
“It’s kind of a relief going on stage every night,” he tells me the following day, when we meet in a bar in King’s Cross. “It’s like this is what I’m supposed to be doing.” This is fortunate, given Wunderhorse are currently on the road with Irish rock band Fontaines DC, having previously supported North Shields artist Sam Fender. Nick Cave has weighed in on the Kanye West debate, saying he will still listen to the rapper’s music regardless of his recent antisemitic remarks.
Last month, West made headlines after tweeting antisemitic comments, which led to his brief social media suspension and losing out on his billion-dollar partnership with Adidas.
You can find out more about what West has said and who has called him out here.
“Well, on some level I don’t care what Kanye has to say on things, but I do love Kanye, his music,” Cave said during a new interview on BBC’s Newsnight.
“But, I find antisemitism in particular distasteful. And so it’s very disappointing to hear these remarks and such sort of obvious, boring kind of reductive tropes that he’s actually pedalling.”
Cave added: “However it’s a personal choice as to whether you can go on and listen to that person’s music.

Sam Fender’s older brother Liam Fender has released his debut single.
The long-time musician released “Love Will Conquer” on Friday (28 October). The track is accompanied by a semi-autobiographical music video filmed in North Shields, and starring the actor Jacob Anderton.
News of the single comes with the announcement of Liam’s first ever hometown show at Riverside in Newcastle on Thursday 8 December.
The song’s “universal message of togetherness, belief in better times, and the importance of connection has only grown more poignant amid the turbulence of recent years”, Liam said on the new single.
“Love Will Conquer” is an optimistic take on the world, with the video showing Anderton working during the day and then performing to uninterested audiences in the evenings.
Liam himself also features in the video singing in the pub scattered between shots of Anderton.

This year’s Best New Artist race is one of the most fun to follow in years at the Grammys. And it isn’t only because a lot of exciting artists are looking to be nominated, but more due to the lack of an obvious, undeniable front-runner like Billie Eilish or Olivia Rodrigo in years past. While a couple of people do look like very safe bets, the category could go a myriad of ways and ultimately shock us all for the first time in forever.
A few front-runners are probably safe for a nomination. Latto could perhaps be the biggest of them, with her hit “Big Energy” being one of the defining songs of 2022 and being a hip-hop/pop crossover. Another is Zach Bryan, whose debut album, “American Heartbreak,” is the biggest country album eligible for this year’s Grammys and has netted multiple weeks in the top 10 of...

In another universe, Santi White might be about to hit the road for her Holified Tour right now. Instead, the musician — who performs as Santigold — is talking to Rolling Stone about what she calls a “cultural crisis.” As she was preparing to tour on the heels of her new album, Spirituals, Santigold came to the sound realization that the trek was unsustainable, both financially and for her mental health. She made the difficult decision to cancel the run, and she was far from alone. Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber, Animal Collective,...

When last year’s rock field nominations at the Grammys were announced, the reactions were mixed. A lot of people were happy that the field prioritized rock legends and “authentic” rock music over alternative-leaning. However, others were quite disappointed by the lack of high-profile — and mostly young — artists who were snubbed in favor of the veterans. To many, the rock nominations weren’t exciting without those interesting committee-inserted picks we typically got. The Recording Academy is always aware of criticism, so this year let’s consider who might ultimately get picked for prestigious nominations, young and old.

Little Simz has been named as the winner of the 2022 Mercury Prize with her album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, and rightly so. This year’s ceremony unfolded much as it has in previous years, despite being rescheduled after the Queen’s death in September. And as with previous years, there was plenty of healthy competition to be found on this year’s shortlist: Simz with her ambitious, orchestral fourth album, Sam Fender with the rootsy, socially astute guitar rock of Seventeen Going Under, and Gwenno with her shimmering Cornish-language record, Tresor. Oh, and Harry Styles. Arguably the only one who didn’t deserve a nomination.
Styles has sought credibility from the instant he launched his solo career. There’s nothing wrong with this in itself – why shouldn’t a former boyband star seek artistic acclaim along with the adulation of his fans? No, it’s more the way Styles has gone about it.

Sam Fender, Little Simz, and Harry Styles are among the artists shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize.
The shortlist was unveiled in July, comprising 12 albums – from rap and jazz to indie and Cornish folk-rock – that will compete for the coveted award at a ceremony held this September.
This year’s entries are among the most eclectic in recent years. Little Simz is shortlisted for the second time with her critically adored Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, following on from her nod in 2019 for Grey Area.
Rock singer Sam Fender receives his debut nomination for his second LP, Seventeen Going Under, as does pop star Harry Styles, who has been shortlisted for his third studio album, Harry’s House. His record is arguably the most “pure pop” album to be shortlisted since Ed Sheeran’s controversial nomination in 2017.
First-time nominees make up most of this year’s nominees, following last year’s shortlist which included 10 debuts.
