In the build-up to Wolf Man's release, the design of the titular monster was seemingly unveiled when photos of a guy in a mask at Universal's theme park attraction found their way online.
Though this did turn out to be the basis for the werewolf that attacks our protagonists in Leigh Whannell's movie, the overall look came across a lot better on screen, and Blake (Christopher Abbott) ultimately transforms into a different beast altogether.
Even so, the "Hills Fever" wolfman's final design still proved to be highly divisive, and a lot of fans simply couldn't get on board with a near-hairless creature that looked far more man than wolf.
We've already seen some alternate creature designs from concept artist Constantine Sekeris, who has now taken to Instagram to share another early sketch. This take on the monster actually looks a little like the Wolfman from Monster Squad!

Horror fans were very excited when it was announced that Leigh Whannell had stepped in to replace the departing Derek Cianfrance as director on Universal/Blumhouse's Wolf Man reboot, since the filmmaker had previously delivered his own take on another classic Universal Monster which proved to be a big critical and commercial hit.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Whannell is going to be able to repeat The Invisible Man's success.
Wolf Man arrived in theaters on Friday amid mostly negative reviews (it currently sits at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the movie has now come in well below its already modest opening weekend box office estimates.
The downbeat werewolf flick was on track for a $17M-$21M bow, but only managed to take in $10.6M over three days (analysts believe it'll hit $12M by Monday).

Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man is now in theaters, and the Universal Monster reboot may be facing an uphill struggle after failing to take a big enough bite out of the box office over the weekend.
We're still waiting on international numbers, but the movie only managed to take in $4.45M on Friday (including Thursday previews) in North America, and is now on track for a $17M-$21M debut. This wouldn't exactly be a disaster for a film with a reported $25 million budget, but audiences really don't seem to be too fussed about this one.
Wolf Man has earned a C- CinemaScore, which is disappointing even for an R-rated horror movie. It's also dropped down to a "rotten" 54% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Again, overseas takings may be a lot better (and that relatively low budget has to be taken into consideration), but as things stand, Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King looks set to claim the No.

When Universal Pictures’ attempt at a Marvel-style “Dark Universe” flopped, Blumhouse stepped in with its own take on classic movie monsters. One of their biggest hits was The Invisible Man, which earned rave reviews and pulled in $144.5 million worldwide on just a $7 million budget.
Director Leigh Whannell, after working on The Invisible Man, shifted his focus to Wolf Man. For years, there’s been talk about a sequel focusing on Elisabeth Moss’s character, the “Invisible Woman.”
Jason Blum and James Wan have hinted that they’re open to continuing the story. However, Whannell recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s not interested in directing a sequel.
Whannell explained that crafting an ending is one of the hardest parts of screenwriting, mentioning his admiration for movies like Se7en, which he recently saw in IMAX.

When Universal Pictures' plan for an McU-style "Dark Universe" fell apart, Blumhouse wasted no time putting its own spin on those iconic movie monsters. The Invisible Man was among the first and received rave reviews before grossing $144.5 million worldwide on a mere $7 million budget.
While filmmaker Leigh Whannell has since moved on to Wolf Man, there's been chatter for years about him helming a sequel revolving around Elisabeth Moss' "Invisible Woman."
The movie ended by teasing a vigilante-style follow-up and both Jason Blum and James Wan have left the door open to it becoming a reality in previous interviews.
Unfortunately, Whannell doesn't seem overly interested and closed the door on stepping behind the camera for The Invisible Woman while talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via FearHQ.com).

The movie begins with an overprotective (borderline abusive) father taking his young son hunting in the dense Oregon woods. After an encounter with an unseen creature, the man becomes obsessed with tracking the monster down.
We then jump forward 30 years, as Blake Lovell (Christopher Abbott) receives a letter informing him that his estranged father has legally been declared dead after going missing in the woods years earlier. Blake convinces his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) to accompany him to his dad's secluded house to pack up his belongings.

Writer-director Leigh Whannell follows 2020’s horror hit The Invisible Man with another revamp of a classic Universal monster movie. Unfortunately, it’s not quite a howling success – it delivers its fair share of tension and gore moments, but things get a bit hairier when it comes to landing on a suitable allegory and the script ultimately disappoints.
Wolf Man opens with a prologue, in which pre-teen Blake (Zac Chandler) has a scary encounter with an unseen creature in the woods, while out hunting with his stern, militaristic father Grady (Sam Jaeger). Thirty years later, a now grown-up Blake (Christopher Abbott) inherits a remote woodland cabin after his father is finally declared dead, having disappeared without a trace, many years earlier.

The moment we first caught a glimpse of Wolf Man's titular monster during last year's Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, it was clear Blumhouse's take on the iconic character would be divisive.
In terms of creature design, it's not what fans expected and definitely not what the majority wanted. Alas, it now sounds like that's at least one of the contributing factors to filmmaker Leigh Whannell's take on the franchise being too light on scares in a reboot that lacks bite.
The review embargo lifted today and while some critics enjoyed this fresh take on the most iconic of all werewolves, most agree that Wolf Man is a far cry from the edge-of-your-seat horror movie Whannell delivered with The Invisible Man in 2020.
According to Variety, "'Wolf Man' wants to say something — about the fear of inheriting aggression or mental illness from our parents, perhaps — but winds up making him pathetic in the process.

When we look back on this period of Hollywood movies and decide which reboots and remakes actually deserve to come with us, Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man should be among them. After Universal's attempted cinematic universe was Doa, the 2020 horror film showed the classic monsters had more to offer than brand recognition by finding something about the 1933 original that spoke to today and mining it for well-executed scares. I remember it as the kind of movie I was telling friends they had to see as soon as I left the theater.

After such high-profile flops as 2010’s The Wolfman and 2017’s The Mummy, the latter of which failed to launch Universal Pictures’s intended Dark Universe franchise, came a rare standout amid the studio’s ongoing project of rebooting its classic horror movies: Leigh Wannell’s The Invisible Man, which reframed the 1933 film (based on H.G. Wells’s novel) as an extreme case of stalking and gaslighting. While this ostensibly feminist spin on the story earned the film some appreciation, its pointed topicality was less compelling than Wannell’s masterful orchestration of suspense and, during the middle stretch, use of a single location.
Following that success, Wannell has been given the reins to Wolf Man, nominally based on the 1941 version with Lon Chaney Jr. that, along with its sequels, proved to be one of the most influential entries in Universal’s monster cycle. As with The Invisible Man, there isn’t...

Leigh Whannell delivers a new take on a classic Universal Monster as Wolf Man releases and becomes available to watch. The 2025 horror movie brings back an icon of the monster genre with Christopher Abbott playing the titular character. The film comes from Whannell after he already successfully revamped a Universal Monster with Blumhouse's help in 2020's The Invisible Man. The new version of Wolf Man focuses on a family as the husband/father begins to transform into a new being after an animal attack.

The highly anticipated horror film Wolf Man, directed by Leigh Whannell, is set to hit theaters on January 17, 2025, marking the seventh installment in Universal’s Wolf Man franchise.

The first press screenings for Wolf Man took place last night, and the social media reactions have been very positive so far.
Although a lot of horror fans were disappointed by the creature design (of both the first werewolf and the monster Christopher Abbott's Blake transforms into) in Blumhouse/Universal's reboot, this doesn't seem to have been an issue for the majority of critics.
Overall, it sounds like director Leigh Whannell has delivered a worthy follow-up to 2020's acclaimed The Invisible Man with a terrifying, gruesome, and surprisingly emotional film.
It's always worth keeping in mind that these initial reactions do tend to be quite effusive, but we haven't come across a single negative post, which is usually a pretty good sign.

Blumhouse and Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man is set to hit theaters later this month, and tickets for the horror reboot are now officially on sale.
To accompany the announcement, we have some new posters, a TV spot and featurette giving us our best look yet at the other werewolf that Christopher Abbott's Blake will change into.
The new spot includes a (very) quick glimpse of the beast, but the featurette spotlights the full creature design via some concept maquettes. The video also features Whannell and the cast discussing this latest take on the classic Universal Monster.
It's entirely possible that what we've seen of the Wolf Man so far will not be the final form, as Blake could transform into a more lupine-looking creature towards the end of the movie.

A couple of leaked screenshots from The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man reboot have found their way online (via Reddit), and they reveal our first glimpse of the movie's other werewolf.
Our first look at what was assumed to be the titular Wolfman via an actor in a costume at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights was met with a lot of backlash, but the most recent trailer appeared to confirm that this will be the creature responsible for the initial attack, leaving Christopher Abbott's Blake to change into a different beast altogether.
Whannell addressed the negative response during an interview with NME.
“The marketing department for a movie is so huge,” he said, “it’s really impossible to keep tabs on every single thing. So when something comes out that maybe the internet decides they don’t like, the only thing I can think is: ‘Well,...

Following the recent trailer, Empire Magazine has shared a new official image from the upcoming Wolf Man reboot, and it finds Christopher Abbott's protagonist, Blake, beginning his Lycanthropic transformation.
Our first look at the titular werewolf via an actor in a costume at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights was met with a lot of backlash, but the trailer did suggest that this will be the monster responsible for the initial attack, leaving Blake to change into a different beast altogether.
Director Leigh Whannell tells the mag that this movie represents his return to "pure horror" after working on Upgrade and The Invisible Man.
“Upgrade was more sci-fi action. I was watching a lot of domestic thrillers when I wrote The Invisible Man, because I love that genre. [Wolf Man] is me saying, ‘I just wanted to make something that is straight-up, pure horror.’”

“I think of it as a companion piece to The Invisible Man,” he continues. “I didn’t want this film to be a nostalgic or a retro Wolf Man film in any way.

2025's Wolf Man reboot is months away from release, with an exciting cast rounding out the monster horror movie. With the Wolf Man reboot's release planned for January 2025, there's a shockingly small amount of material available about the project so far. A teaser trailer offered some glimpses at the various cast members, but many of the plot details are rather vague. Blumhouse Productions revealed some footage at CinemaCon, showing the lead star being bitten by the beast, establishing the film's werewolf conflict.
Wolf Man is arriving in a sudden wave of monster movies following 2020's success with The Invisible Man reboot. Other upcoming films include Nosferatu, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, and more, but there's currently no indication that any of these projects will be connected, akin to Universal Pictures' classic monsters universe. For now, Wolf Man looks to be a standalone horror with no connections to the Dark Universe or any other movies.

Likely as a response to the backlash our recent first look at the titular werewolf via an actor in a costume at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights received, Blumhouse has released the first official teaser trailer for Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man.
While the trailer mostly keeps the beast under wraps aside from a few shadowy shots, we do get a couple of very quick glimpses of the creature running through the forest, and another through a rifle scope.
It's quite blurry and difficult to make out too many details, but based on what we do see, it does look like the display costume was indeed influenced by the movie monster.
At any rate, this is a very effective teaser, and should garner some more positive feedback from horror fans.
