“Black Mirror,” “Silo” and “The Last of Us” were among winners at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Sunday night in London.

“Black Mirror” Season 6 was among a handful of shows to take home two awards, with creator Charlie Brooker and writer Bisha K Ali winning in the drama writer category while the show also won best photography and lighting in fiction category for the episode “Demon 79.”

The awards were a win for Apple TV+ with “Silo” and “Slow Horses” also each taking home two awards, the former for original music in fiction and production design and the latter for sound in fiction and editing in fiction.

Meanwhile “The Last of Us” director Peter Hoar took home an award for best fiction director.

Period drama “The Great” also picked up a gong thanks to costume designer Sharon Long.

The awards were hosted by Stacey Dooley and guest presenters included Katie Piper and Tanya Moodie.

The BAFTA TV Craft Awards were handed out at the Brewery in East London on Sunday, April 28. The Craft Awards, like the Creative Arts Emmy, are dedicated to below-the-line categories with a dozen devoted to fictional programming, another six to factual, and four are in a combined field to make 22 categories overall. Black Mirror, The Last of Us, and Slow Horses were among the winners of the BAFTA Television Craft Awards 2024, which were handed out in London on Sunday.

Silo, The Witcher, coverage of the coronation of King Charles III and the Eurovision Song Contest were also among the winners.

The craft award for best drama writer went to Charlie Brooker and Bisha K. Ali for Black Mirror episode “Demon 79.” Peter Hoar won the best director in fiction honor for his work on The Last of Us.

The ceremony, celebrating the best behind-the-scenes TV talent of 2023, was held at The Brewery in the British capital, an 18th-century brewery recast as an events venue.

HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon and the BBC/AMC medical comedy-drama This Is Going to Hurt won the most honors at the 2023 BAFTA TV Craft Awards.

“The Long Shadow,” a true crime drama by “Hijack” and “Lupin” creator George Kay, has revealed a stellar cast.

Directed by BAFTA-winner director Lewis Arnold the 7 x 60′ series for U.K. broadcaster ITV and streamer Itvx, drama is a depiction of the five-year hunt for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, focusing on the lives of the victims who crossed his path and those of the officers at the heart of the police investigation.

Toby Jones (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) plays Dennis Hoban, who initially led the enquiry, with David Morrissey (“Sherwood”) as George Oldfield, who took on the investigation. Toby Jones and David Morrissey have joined the cast of ITV’s Yorkshire Ripper drama from Lupin writer George Kay. The Long Shadow will air next month and is described as the “definitive depiction of the desperate five-year hunt for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe,” better known as the Yorkshire Ripper. Jones will play Dcs Dennis Hoban, who initially led the enquiry, while Morrissey, who already plays a policeman in the BBC’s Sherwood, is Dcs George Oldfield, who famoulsy took on the investigation. Lee Ingleby is Dcs Jim Hobson, whilst Katherine Kelly plays Emily Jackson with Daniel Mays as her husband, Sydney Jackson and Shaun Thomas as their son, Neil Jackson. Produced by Des outfit New Pictures and directed by Lewis Arnold, the series, which was announced three years ago, will launch next month and air on Sundance Now in the U.

Exclusive: James Graham’s BBC drama Sherwood has set three-time BAFTA nominee Clio Barnard as its Season 2 director, as Lesley Manville and David Morrissey confirm they will reprise their roles in a story that will move forward to the present day.

Barnard, who has been BAFTA nominated for Ali & Ava, The Selfish Giant and The Arbor, is lead director and EP on Season 2, which begins filming this summer. The director, who replaces Lewis Arnold and Ben A. Williams, will oversee a season “navigating the devastating effect of two crimes on the community” in Nottinghamshire, told through a modern-day lens. She most recently directed Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes in Apple TV+ drama The Essex Serpent.

Serial killer dramas have a grimy reputation. The phrase conjures up lurid magazine headlines promising Sick! Twisted! Depravity! and Never-Seen-Before Crime Scene Photos! Think ‘true crime serial killer’, you think of Jack the Ripper tours and David from Psychoville poring over victim stats and working himself to a froth over all the gory details.

To shake off those associations and emerge as nuanced, intelligent and non-exploitative, a drama has to work hard. It has to foreground the human cost and trace a story that doesn’t revel in gore. It requires scripts that build in context and narrative balance. It needs empathy with the victims, and a central performance that captures the horrid anomaly of the killer without lending rock star glamour. Most of all, it needs a purpose other than as a ratings draw.

Stephen Graham (“The Irishman”) and Sean Bean (“Game of Thrones”) will star in three-part prison drama series “Time,” created by Jimmy McGovern (“Accused”) for U.K. broadcaster BBC One.

Set within the British penal system, the drama is seen through the eyes of two different men, a teacher, husband and father who killed an innocent man in an accident, played by Bean, and a caring prison officer, played by Graham. Both men are seemingly trapped by their pasts and unsure of their futures, but have to survive and find the strength to move forward.

The series will be directed by Lewis Arnold.

More than 100 emerging U.K. directors have joined together to launch Directors Now, a free downloadable document in which each shares their unique backstory, musings and anecdotes about working in the industry today.

Meant as a resource for the next generation of filmmakers, the document was put together in part to counteract the negative impact the Covid-19 situation has had on new filmmakers who might otherwise have been starting their careers if circumstances were more normal.

Directors Now was created and edited by director Lewis Arnold, who also frequently teaches at the University of Gloucestershire and the National Film and Television School.

AMC Networks’ streaming service Sundance Now has taken the rights for true crime drama “Des,” starring David Tennant, in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean.

New Pictures’ chilling three-parter, based on the true story of serial killer Dennis Nilsen (Tennant), will debut on commissioning broadcaster ITV in the U.K. later this year.

ITV has offered a first look at David Tennant as Scottish serial killer Dennis Nilsen in its newly-announced miniseries Des.

The drama from Catherine The Great producer New Pictures was unveiled on Friday and ITV quickly followed up by releasing an image of Tennant as the man who murdered at least 15 men and boys between 1978 and 1983.

Des was developed by Luke Neal and Lewis Arnold, with Neal writing the first two episodes and Kelly Jones penning the third. It charts Nilsen’s unraveling from the point of his arrest to his trial, and is based on the Brian Masters book Killing For Company, which attempted to get inside the mind of the killer.

Masters is a central character in ITV’s drama and is played by The Crown star Jason Watkins. Line Of Duty actor Daniel Mays features as Detective Chief Inspector Peter Jay.

BBC America announces the premiere of the Prey TV series, Thursday, February 25, 016, at 10:00pm Et/Pt. The show plays out as two three-part stories covering two criminal cases. Check out these photos above and below, and get more series information from BBC America.

After a lacklustre outing, last week’s episode of Humans bounced back by intersecting a number of character trajectories. This week’s episode continues the upturn in quality by delving into the history of a number of characters, shedding further light on their present-day actions and what drives them. Since the beginning of the season, Leo has been single-minded in his search for Mia, a search that finally brought him and Max in contact with Mattie last week. Similarly, Mattie’s initial anger towards synths and their ability to replace humans has been replaced with a genuine level of curiosity and care for Anita, particularly after getting a glimpse of Mia. This week’s episode formally cements Mattie’s turn to an ally of Leo and Anita/Mia, in a strong episode that benefits greatly from bringing some characters together and adding further dimensions to others.

Prey has been renewed for a second series.

ITV confirmed that the drama is returning for a new run, adding that it will feature a "completely new story" starring Philip Glenister and Rosie Cavaliero.

Glenister will play prison officer David Murdoch, whose life becomes complicated on a routine visit to a hospital as events spiral out of control.

David receives a phone call, which changes his life forever and sees him on the wrong side of the law.

Unaware that the life of David's heavily pregnant daughter Emma has been threatened, DS Susan Reinhardt (Cavaliero) pursues the fugitive while trying to understand his motives.

Show creator Chris Lunt has returned to pen the upcoming series.

The 34th edition of the Cambridge Film Festival (Aug 28 - Sept 7) is to open with The Kidnapping Of Michel Houellebecq, Guillaume Nicloux’s comedy-drama based in part on true events.

It recounts the disapperance of reclusive French novelist Michel Houellebecq during a book tour in 2011. The rumours of his whereabouts led to endless speculation, including a kidnapping. The film, which stars the novelist as himself, will be presented at the festival by Nicloux.

Special guests at this year’s festival include writer-director Rowan Joffe and novelist Sj Watson who will present Before I Go To Sleep, an amnesiac thriller starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong.
