Dev Patel has been an interesting actor to watch as he always brings an earnestness to his performances that is hard to convey. Along with his breakout performance in Slumdog Millionaire, the actor received enormous praise and accolades for his dramatic range in films like Lion, Hotel Mumbai, The Green Knight, and in his recent directorial debut film Monkey Man.

Film directors acting in the films they make is neither rare nor new. Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton were doing it during the silent era, and as more artists like Orson Wells, Ida Lupino, John Cassavetes, and now Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper got into the act (literally), it's hardly surprising for audiences to see a movie written by, directed by, and starring the same person.
However, there also exists the parallel concept of the director's cameo, which is distinguished from the acting directors because the concept of a cameo itself is an elastic idea — ranging from a brief, non-verbal appearance to an entire supporting role. Unlike a filmmaker playing the lead or a co-lead in their own feature, a director making a cameo appearance in their own film tends to have a meta aspect to it: they know you know who they are, so their appearance in and of...

Harrison Ford has cemented a strong legacy with notable roles that range from drama to adventure. From gaining worldwide recognition with Han Solo’s role in the Star Wars franchise to bidding farewell to the titular character in the Indiana Jones franchise, he has proven his acting mettle, becoming an American cultural icon.

With a great personality like Ford, it would surprise even his collaborators to find him knocking at his door. Well, the scenario happened in real life when the former visited his Cowboys & Aliens co-star, Walton Goggins.

A disaster from 2010, Noah Ringer’s The Last Airbender was a disappointing live adaptation of the much-adored source material, Avatar: The Last Airbender. The animated show was aired for the first time in 2005 and it instantly became a fan favorite, as fans adored the show for three seasons. While the film had a plethora of things wrong with it, one of the most visibly wrong things present in the film was the casting.
Noah Ringer as Aang in The Last Airbender (2010)
In the show, the characters were from different races, but in the film the characters were whitewashed, making the film an eyesore. Noah Rider portrayed the role of Aang, the last Airbender who had a difficult time surviving epic flop, and it was his passion that saved him from falling into the depths of depression.

He’s king of the twist, master of tension, and sometimes wildly inconsistent in his output – but at his best, M. Night Shyamalan and stripped-back superhero fare, Shyamalan is as unpredictable as many of his movies’ final acts.
With new existential thriller Knock At The Cabin, the director trades in big twists for tight, truly affecting filmmaking. As the film arrives in cinemas, Empire has wrangled all of Shyamalan’s major movie releases into an official ranking – have a read below:
13. The Last Airbender (2010)
This adaptation of the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender did not, it’s fair to say, connect in the way that everyone hoped. The story follows Aang (Noah Ringer), a child “avatar” able to channel the four elements, who became frozen in a block of ice and doomed the four nations to fall out of harmony – until he’s thawed out and forced to confront his destiny.

We look back at M Night Shyamalan's much-vilified fantasy movie, and ask if anything could have saved it...
“The Last Airbender is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented.”
So began Roger Ebert's review of The Last Airbender. It sounds harsh, but Ebert's half-star verdict was fairly representative of the tidal wave of criticism that engulfed director M. Night Shyamalan's most expensive and, ultimately, most derided film yet.
But unlike other misfires from Shyamalan, this wasn't based on his own original idea. It was the first of a planned trilogy based on the beloved Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was hugely acclaimed for its visual sense, engrossing storytelling and lively, vibrant characters. What went wrong? It's almost harder to try and figure out what, if anything, went right.

If you follow our Twitter feed (@CinemaSpy) you’ll know that a couple of days ago we promised you the specs for the December 6 Blu-ray and DVD release of Cowboys & Aliens.
Forgive our tardiness but our stagecoach was delayed a day by a washed out road and the 1G wi-fi at the nearest saloon was spotty at best. Hence, it’s taken us a bit longer than expected to reach the best Western (Ok, bad joke). Anyway, here are the full details.
According to Universal, the Blu-ray combo pack release will include and extended edition of the John Favreau-directed sci-fi western while the DVD will have the theatrical version. As far as we can tell, the extended edition includes roughly 17 minutes of extra footage but we’ve no idea what that shows. As for Bonus Features, here’s the list:

…a mysterious, amnesiac stranger (Craig) stumbling into a tightly controlled Arizona desert town known as Absolution. It’s not the friendliest place for outsiders and the situation is made worse by the cruel grip of Colonel Woodrow Dollarhyde.
But then something happens to give the town bigger problems than the newcomer’s arrival or Dollarhyde’s despotic rule: aliens screeching down from the sky in flying saucers to abduct and kill humans. Soon the residents and a group of other cowboys are teaming up with the resident Apache tribe to fight off this brand new menace. Can they win an epic battle against a seemingly unstoppable force? Cowboys & Aliens movie delivered lots of wild action, special effects, drama & more. Universal Pictures released their new action/thriller flick "Cowboys & Aliens" into theaters this weekend. I just watched it,and thought it was way better than I had anticipated it to be. The theater was also surprisingly packed, which made me think this movie is a pretty huge deal. It stars: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, Paul Dano, Noah Ringer, Keith Carradine, Clancy Brown, Ana de la Reguera, and Abigail Spencer. In the flick,Daniel Craig played character Jake Lonergan who is a robber that has forgotten his identity after escaping the grasp of dangerous aliens. Now he's caught out in the middle of nowhere, and makes his way to a small town called "Absolution."

When I first saw the preview for Cowboys and Aliens, it was in a packed theater for the weekend showing of Harry Potter. The audience roared with laughter when the spaceship appeared over the quaint and desolate western town. Secretly I thought to myself...”Cowboys And aliens? Yes!” but on the outside I joined in the raucous laughter anyways. “Cowboys And aliens? How ridiculous ha ha!”......
The fact of the matter is that there is nothing ridiculous about cowboys and aliens being in the same film together. What’s so weird about cowboys meeting with aliens? Perfectly logical in my mind, if you are thinking that aliens have probably been around far longer than humans have, so why wouldn’t they have come to earth sooner than 1996? Right because it’s much more...

Title: Cowboys & Aliens Directed By: Jon Favreau Starring: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Paul Dano, Adam Beach, Sam Rockwell, Noah Ringer, Keith Carradine, Walton Goggins If you’re going to make a movie called Cowboys & Aliens, there better be some cowboys and aliens. In combining the two genres, the filmmakers had two options, miraculously create some sort of scenario that feels raw and believable or just go all out, embracing absurdities of both. Forget the fact that the former would have been a near impossible achievement; who wants to watch some schmaltzy drama about cowboys fighting aliens? The filmmakers not only go for the latter option, but they...

With a title like "Cowboys & Aliens," you expect something with multiple personalities, but nothing like this movie's full-blown schizophrenia. No one involved with the making of this picture ever settled on exactly what they were making. A lighthearted summer action film? No way: too violent and grim. A serious Western revenge film? Nope: too soft and bloodless. A mystery? Nah: too many questions are left unanswered at the end. A character study of life on the frontier? Surely you jest. "Cowboys & Aliens" is just this vague, undefined blob of a movie: all of the above, and none of them convincingly.
Befitting the film's lack of specificity, it's set not in any particular time or place but in a generic stereotype-laden mining town called Absolution; this is "The Old West," not the old west. There we meet a man played by Daniel Craig, who wakes in the middle of the desert...

Take scrappy Wild West folk and pit them against interstellar aggressors, and what should you get? With Jon Favreau directing, you might expect something smart, fast-paced and fun. After all, Favreau's Elf endeared Will Farrell to audiences who had no appreciation for the man -- no small feat -- and Iron Man and Iron Man 2 were both satisfying summer blockbusters. Unfortunately, Cowboys & Aliens has more in common with Snakes on a Plane than with Iron Man.
The concept of "cowboys versus aliens" couldn't be simpler, but the movie plods along with too many subplots. Understandably, archetypal western characters abound. Daniel Craig's broody, silent stranger upsets the uneasy peace of a dirtwater town run by a dictatorial cattle baron, Woodrow Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). Townspeople like saloonkeeper Doc (Sam Rockwell) suffer the patronage of Dolarhyde's spoiled, mercurial son (Paul Dano), thanks in part to worshipful ranch hand Nat Colorado (Adam Beach). The dutiful,...

"Cowboys & Aliens" may be lassoing its way into theaters on Friday (July 29), but the movie's journey to the big screen began a long time ago in a galaxy ... well, not so far away.
The current incarnation of Jon Favreau's adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's 2006 graphic novel is a far cry from what the director had originally envisioned. When we first heard about the project back in '08, it seemed to be shaping up to be "Iron Man 2.0," with Favreau directing, "Iron Man" screenwriters penning the script and Robert Downey Jr. pegged as the flick's leading man.
"Cowboys & Aliens" was initially set to begin filming in 2009, but with Downey Jr. unsure about committing to the role and Favreau still not officially onboard,...

Cowboys & Aliens Directed by: John Favreau Written by: Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman & Damon Lindelof, Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby (screenplay), Scott Mitchell Rosenberg (comic) Starring: Daniel Craig, Abigail Spencer, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, Noah Ringer, Clancy Brown Cowboys & Aliens sticks to its guns. Symbolically, that might suggest a certain strength, but in truth it means the filmmakers couldn't have played it any safer. The story is a weak hodgepodge of ideas riding past the point of homage clear into Cliché County. The crisp, colorful visuals likewise present an unmemorable wallpaper of established western and science fiction iconography devoid of individual vision. It's a clear case of too many cooks. Credited to a screenwriting seven, their conglomerated output is anything but magnificent. With a cast of caricatures that includes an amnesiac outlaw (Daniel Craig), a bumbling medicine man (Sam Rockwell), and a grizzled cattle rancher (Harrison Ford), director Jon Favreau...

It is telling that there are five credited screenwriters on Jon Favreau‘s latest blockbuster, Cowboys & Aliens. Based on Scott Mitchell Rosenberg‘s comic-book Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby all share script credit for the film. By the last act, the entire thing feels crafted from a “science-fiction for dummies” book. That said, before it all falls apart, the populist Iron Man director attempts to create an authentic western tone and almost nails it.
Daniel Craig plays Jake Lonergan, a cowboy who wakes up in 1875 New Mexico with no recollection of his past. As he enters the town of Absolution he encounters the town bully played by Paul Dano, whose dad is Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). The two get in some trouble and are sent to a bigger prison in Sante Fe. That is, until the aliens come and attack.

Here’s three new UK one-sheet posters (basically an unamalgamated version of this poster) for Cowboys & Aliens, which is based on the graphic novel by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, and stars Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Noah Ringer, Paul Dano, Clancy Brown, Keith Carradine, Adam Beach and Harrison Ford, in a film that:
…finds a mysterious, amnesiac stranger (Craig) stumbling into a tightly controlled Arizona desert town known as Absolution.
