One of the most important elements of delivering a memorable movie monster is the reveal. It’s a pivotal moment that finally sees the threat reveal itself in full to its prey, often heralding the final climactic confrontation, which can make or break a movie monster. It’s not just the creature effects and craftmanship laid bare; a monster’s reveal means the horror is no longer up to the viewer’s imagination.

When to reveal the monstrous threat is just as important as How, and few contemporary creature features have delivered a monster reveal as surprising or as cool as 2020’s Underwater.

The Setup

Director William Eubank’s aquatic creature feature, written by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) and Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan), is set around a deep water research and drilling facility, Kepler 822, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, sometime in the future.

Simu Liu recently walked the runway for the fourth edition of Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty show, and discussed the experience during a red carpet interview with Variety at the Lacma gala in Los Angeles on Saturday, Nov. 5.

“That was a wild phone call to get, by the way,” the “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star said of being contacted about the show.

“It’s not everyday that one receives a phone call and it’s like, ‘Would you like to walk for Rihanna’s fashion label?'” he recalled.

Per the official logline, the series follows “brilliant botanist-adventurer Dr. Nate Grady (Liu) as he teams up with the slippery international fixer, Sloane Seydoux, on a breathless race to solve an ancient mystery tied to the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World.”

Adam Cozad is attached to write and executive produce the adaptation, with Justin Lin onboard to direct and executive produce via Perfect Storm Entertainment. Perfect Storm’s Salvador Gatdula and Andrew Schneider also executive produce along with Beau Flynn of Flynn Picture Co. Scott Sheldon is co-executive producing. Listening to the audio commentary to Underwater, you can hear director William Eubank gush about the set design, the costumes, the creature effects, the title sequence, and so on, and you realize it’s about all that and not the story and characters. Any time you take your eye off the story and characters, you’re in trouble.

Underwater, out now from 20th Century Home Entertainment, is a complete misfire of a horror thriller, effectively remaking Alien and setting it under the sea. It wastes an engaging enough cast anchored by Kristen Stewart, looking as fetching in her underwear as Sigourney Weaver did, and never builds enough original suspense to be worth sitting through.

What are you afraid of? For many it is the dark. For some it is clowns. However, for this writer’s money, few things send shivers up and down the spine as the vastness and unknowns of the deep blue sea. Most of the globe is populated by these waters and there is something particularly terrifying about those dark, unexplored, and rather alien, depths. This is a fact a few films have picked up on but with Underwater, which is the last film to be released under the 20th Century Fox name following Disney’s acquisition, director William Eubank (The Signal) resurges the aquatic horror genre.

The new horror film Underwater is a piece so devoid of entertainment value that you may find yourself yearning for the understated elegance of a film like DeepStar Six (1989) or even the subtlety of similar fare like Leviathan (1989). Universal could not have set it up any better for the wide release of Sam Mendes’ “1917.” After grossing over $2 million from a two-week limited release run, the DreamWorks-produced World War I film is set to go wide on Friday days after winning Best Picture and Best Director at the Golden Globes.

Kristen Stewart will go to any length to distance herself from the sun. The upcoming survivalist movie Underwater shows the Twilight star leagues away from her past horror endeavors. It is a combination of a cabin-in-the-woods movie and a submarine thriller. But the first trailer for the film explores what happens when a protagonist drops down to the same level as the enemy below.

Directed by William Eubanks, who helmed the 2014 film The Signal, Underwater is set 5,000 miles from land, and seven miles under the ocean. That's about as isolated a spot as you can set a film and still be on earth. In 20th Century Fox’s upcoming horror film “Underwater,” Kristen Stewart tries to escape evil forces not from the depths of the galaxy but at the bottom of the ocean. Right now, the DC Extended Universe is one giant question mark — and most notably, The Batman may be the biggest question mark of all. Initially, Ben Affleck was set to write, direct, and star in the Caped Crusader film. Ben Affleck’s next film as director, following Live By Night, was supposed to be the new standalone Dark Knight adventure, The Batman. There’s still speculation as to whether Affleck is stepping away from the cape and cowl entirely, in spite of his insistence that he’s committed to the role. Away from Gotham City, though, he’s found another project to interest him.

He’s in talks to direct Red Platoon, a war film set in Afghanistan, and based on the memoir by Clinton Romesha. The story is a true one, set in 2009 and around the battle of Kamdesh.

It’s been a while since we heard anything about the future of the Divergent series after the previous installment, 2016’s Allegiant, was released in cinemas. Lots of rumours have circulated about what direction the franchise would take and it looks like we may have some answers this week.

While still in the “early stages” of development, Deadline states that Ascendant is set to find a new home with Starz and that the conclusion is being written and executive produced by Adam Cozad (Tarzan) and directed by Age of Adaline helmer Lee Toland Krieger, both of whom were attached the film version was planned.

The Divergent franchise is inching closer to continuing on the small screen.

Premium cable network Starz is developing a TV take on Ascendant, which was to be the fourth movie in the Divergent franchise.

Writer Adam Cozad (Tarzan) is attached to pen the script as producers Lionsgate look to its newly acquired full stake in Starz to mine the stalled feature franchise. Cozad will executive produce alongside Lee Toland Krieger (Age of Adaline) after they were both previously set to write and direct what would have been the fourth film in the Divergent franchise.

Ascendant is in its early stages of development. It's unclear if the project would reunite any of the stars of the films including Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Ansel Elgort. Lionsgate TV and Starz declined comment.

Looks like it’s one and done for Cara Delevingne and the DC Extended Universe…and we can’t say we’re surprised.

The Valerian actress played the part of June Moon (Aka The Enchantress) in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and quickly became the common enemy of Task Force X. A bloated script and clichéd dialogue arguably reduced Delevingne’s supernatural menace to a bland, wholly forgettable villain though, and that’s certainly disappointing, particularly when you consider her performances across Paper Towns and Face of an Angel.

The Legend of Tarzan screenwriter Adam Cozad will be taking on the challenge of writing Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros. Cozad hasn't really done anything that impressive; both The Legend of Tarzan and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit were mediocre films with weak scripts. 

He has a relationship with Warner Bros., though, and they obviously liked whatever it is that he pitched to them. There's no director attached to the film yet, but the studio is hoping to get Mel Gibson on board. I would really like to see that work out because I think Gibson would do some great things with the movie.

David Ayer wrote and directed the first movie, which turned out to be a lot of fun, regardless of its faults. Ayer is now set to direct Gotham City Sirens with Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn.

Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad sequel hasn’t quite landed on which director can handle its damaged little corner of the DC movie universe, but Mel Gibson is apparently still in the running. So, while the studio figures that out, it might as well put together an actual script for the film that goes beyond “Harley Quinn is there.” To accomplish that, Warner Bros. has hired Adam Cozad, who previously wrote last summer’s largely boring The Legend Of Tarzan—which also featured Harley Quinn herself, Margot Robbie.

The DC Extended Universe is certainly at an interesting point in its life. All of its films have been financial successes, but despite that fact, there are plenty of folks who are almost ready to swear off the universe altogether. So despite their overall financial victories, Warner Bros seems to be making fast, seemingly random decisions, going forward with such films as Gotham City Sirens, Man of Steel 2, The Batman, and of course, Suicide Squad 2, despite their slate already being full.

Though the search for a director continues apace, The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that Adam Cozad, screenwriter on the recent Legend of Tarzan reboot, has officially entered talks to pen Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros.

The anti-hero sequel, which has been labeled a straight-up priority for the studio after David Ayer’s divisive original stormed to $745 million worldwide, sparked into life exactly one month ago, when Hacksaw Ridge helmer Mel Gibson rose to the tip-top of Warner’s shortlist. Gibson remains the number-one choice to helm the follow-up, according to sources, though it should be noted that those same reports indicated that Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), and Life director Daniel Espinosa were also in contention for the coveted gig.

Cross Guy Ritchie off the list for Suicide Squad 2 - but mainly because of a schedule clash...

Just a quick update here. One of the directors who had been linked with Suicide Squad 2 at one stage was Guy Ritchie, currently about to release his King Arthur movie into the world. Ritchie wasn't on the shortlist that appeared earlier this year, but his name had been banded around. And in a new interview with Variety, he seems to confirm that at least some conversation somewhere took place.
