- Paternal grandfather, James Dudley, Sr., served in the military for twelve years, including during World War II, as a chef. His maternal grandfather, Walter Lee Davis, served in the Pacific during World War II and on the USS South Dakota.
- Attended Jonesboro Elementary in Bessemer, Alabama before he moved to Atlanta where he finished grammar school at Cedar Grove Elementary School in East Atlanta.
- In 1993 during the eighth grade, he started his career as a drug dealer selling marijuana and crack cocaine.

- When his mother was pregnant with him his father was on the run from the police for dealing crack cocaine and heroin.
- In September 2017 he published his autobiography, The Autobiography of Gucci Mane, written while he was in prison.
- Helped pioneer the hip hop subgenre of trap music alongside fellow Atlanta-based rappers T.I. and Young Jeezy.
