DC Comics Is Shaking Up Starfire's Origins With One Teen Titans Writer Calling the Decision "Tricky"
DC writer Kami Garcia, the co-creator of the popular Teen Titans graphic novel series, describes dealing with Starfire's origin as "tricky." The whole premise of the popular YA graphic novel series by Garcia and Gabriel Picolo is to have the Titans just be normal teens, with the goal of making them as relatable as possible for the teen readers of the series.
In an interview with Liam McGuire of Comic Frontier, Garcia describes wanting to make all the Titans as much like "normal teens" as possible. Because of this, Starfire's alien origin is shaken up and spun out in a whole new way in the new book Teen Titans: Starfire by Garcia and Picolo. In this story, Starfire's origin is very different.
Garcia doesn't address Kori's alien nature in the book, and even her physical appearance is depicted by Picolo as more human-like, as Kori doesn't have her usual orange skin.

Its been quite some time since fans have seen Starfires villainous sister, Blackfire, in comics. Thats why her blink-and-you-miss-it return in the ongoing Titans series is more than welcomeespecially since shes sporting one of her best costumes to date. Fans of the Teen Titans will be shocked to learn that one of the most Iconic members of the team was almost left out DC's latest series. The team's brand is thriving, with the Teen Titans established as equal to the Justice League in the main DC Universe, while a separate series of Young Adult graphic novels breathe new life into the characters, with Teen Titans: Starfire set to be the next entry in the YA anthology.
Speaking with Comic Frontier, writer Kami Garcia offers new details about her and Gabriel Picolo's Teen Titans: Starfire, featuring Cyborg in a supporting role. Starfire and Cyborg have had a close friendship in every iteration of the Teen Titans, but believe it or not, Cyborg was almost not included, as Garcia wasn't sure if she could pay respect to the character as a non-black creator

The love story between Invincible and Atom Eve gets even more adorable than it already was. One can argue that the union between Mark and Samantha is practically the heart of both the TV show and the original comic books. When they get together in the comics, it changes the foundation of the franchise, on top of just being utterly adorable.
Gabriel Picolo's Instagram page features fan art of how Invincible and Atom Eve's relationship can be even more adorable than it already is in the comics. As seen below, these art sequences focus on the two partaking in mundane, normal, humane activities outside the realm of superhero action.

Everyone loves the action that comes from the comics and even the show, but it's moments like these that reflect just what makes the romance between two superheroes all the more lovable.

Artist Gabriel Picolo shares summer road trip illustrations of Teen Titans bonding in an old car. The Teen Titans graphic novel series from Picolo and Kami Garcia showcases a more casual side of the Titans. The illustrations capture the Titans' camaraderie on a classic cross-country adventure.
The Teen Titans Go!...on a road trip. Comic artist Gabriel Picolo celebrated the start of summer with a series of illustrations featuring the Titans driving across America to visit Bumblebee, catching up with some familiar faces along the way. For fans of his and Kami Garcia's Teen Titans graphic novels, or fans of the Titans in general, this "side story" is a delightful gift.
The Titans in Garcia and Picolos series are just as much young adults as they are superheroes; it makes sense that the young heroes would band together for a classic, cross-country road trip in an old car.

Bestselling novelist Kami Garcia has become a powerhouse force in comics thanks to her work at DC. Her Teen Titans graphic novel series with fan favorite artist Gabriel Picolo has hit multiple bestseller charts and her darkly brilliant true-crime inspired tale Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity has quickly become a cult smash in comic book circles. She’s combining both sides of her DC Comics career with her new upcoming YA graphic novel with Isaac Goodhart, Constantine: Distorted Illusions. Centering on a teenage version of occult DC hero, John Constantine, the gorgeous graphic novel is out now and channels all the punk, magic, and madness you need.
The book kicks off with John Constantine as he’s just graduated high school, but he’s still the chaos-hungry magician we all love. He’s just like the rest of us at that age, Garcia explains. “Like all 17 year olds, he thinks he knows everything.

I’m getting the distinct impression that Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo enjoy two things. One, working together. This is their second effort together, after last year’s Teen Titans: Raven Young Adult book, and they have a third collaboration in the pipeline for next year. Two, they really like the Teen Titans. Garcia has it on record that her favourite character is Raven, and Picolo has made clear that his favourite is the hero this time round, Gar Logan. Their next project, announced for early next year, will come as no great surprise when I tell you it is a Raven/ Beast Boy team up. That, of course, is when creators create the best comics, when they really care about the characters.

What would John Constantine, working class warlock and notorious scumbag who tends to end up doing the right thing anyway, do if billionaires with angel wings started hurtling from the sky and impaling themselves on church spires? He’d probably be pretty chill about it, to be honest, but we’re going to find out for sure in September’s Hellblazer: Rise and Fall, the new DC Black Label book from Tom Taylor and Darick Robertson.
Taylor and Robertson got their first crack at Constantine in 2019’s DCeased: A Good Day to Die, the tie in/expansion to the surprise hit zombie book, DCeased. But even before that, Robertson was no stranger to over-the-top gore played for righteous humor: he’s also a co-creator of The Boys, among many other books in his legendary career.

The first thing that leaps out in a conversation with Kami Garcia, author of the wildly successful Ya Teen Titans graphic novels, and the extremely not middle grade Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity, is how much fun she’s having. “Before I took on the Joker project…I was really considering doing a serial killer prose novel,” she tells us in an interview. “And then I kind of thought to myself, well it will be way more fun to do it with Joker because he’s the ultimate serial killer. [Now] sometimes I’ll send my agent colored pages that I like and look gorgeous, but I always have to remember to say ‘do not view while having lunch’ and stuff.”
But knowing that she’s one of the organizers of Creators 4 Comics, the social media auctions of comics memorabilia, original art pages, and experiences to benefit the Binc Foundation, makes that less surprising.

Jim Lee, the legendary comic artist turned publisher turned DC Comics executive, has spent most of his social distancing putting up huge for local comic shops. He’s been furiously sketching some awesome characters, then auctioning them off on eBay. The Binc Foundation, the charity that supports book stores in times of crisis, has seen an influx of cash thanks to the work of the comics great, to the tune of $230,000 so far. Previous sketches have been of Cyborg, Darkseid, Bane, Grifter and Zealot, and others.

Wonder Woman has had quite the renaissance in recent years, and as one of the Big Three (with Superman and Batman) it is thoroughly deserved. You don’t get continually published since 1941 unless you have something that clicks with readers after all. She first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941, graduated to her own book with Sensation Comics #1 in 1942, and has never looked back since. She has gone through several’ fad’ phases down the years, such as the depowered white jump suit era (yikes), and has sometimes struggled with getting enough readers to pick up her book. Historically, though, having a female character they are trying to aim at girls but written by middle aged men, doesn’t really work, and also ends up alienating the male audience. Most self respecting teenage boys back in the day wouldn’t pick up...

It’s not easy being the greatest female icon in the history of American comic books but, even after more than seven decades on the job, the Amazon princess they call Wonder Woman handles that burden with noble grace and singular determination.
That’s one way to interpret the striking, just-released cover artwork for the upcoming, 96-page, prestige-format, 750th issue of Wonder Woman from Burbank-based publisher DC Comics. The milestone issue will hit shelves at brick-and-mortar retailers on January 22, the same day it lands on the virtual spinner racks of online retailers.
The image evokes the Hellenic imagery of mighty Atlas hefting the world on his Titan shoulder and it was illustrated by Catwoman writer/artist Joëlle Jones, just one of the many DC stars who made contributions to commemorative issue.
Announced interior artists include Colleen Doran, Jesus Merino, Elena Casagrade, Gabriel Picolo, and Wonder Woman Rebirth illustrator Nicola Scott.

Wonder Woman #750 features an all-star lineup of talent.
Action Comics and Detective Comics went back to legacy numbering for huge milestones. In January, the Trinity is complete, as it's Wonder Woman's turn.
DC announced a giant anniversary issue - Wonder Woman #750 - coming January 22nd. It will be a 96 page comic, and like Action Comics and Detective Comics #1000, it will be a bit of a short story jam session. However, unlike those two thousandth issues, Wonder Woman #750 mixes in some newer talent to go with the classic Diana creators who are almost fundamentally required by the universe to be in here.
The book will feature new stories from Greg Rucka and Gail Simone, arguably the two most accomplished and important Wonder Woman writers still making comics today. Rucka wrote Diana's Rebirth arc that brought her up to date in the new continuity in addition to fleshing out...

I have already read and reviewed two of the DC Ink books, featuring Mera and Selina Kyle, and enjoyed both quite a lot. Though, as DC’s foray into the Young Adult book market, these were not aimed at me, I read them with a view to try and understand the audience they were pitched at, and they did that job beautifully. They took typical teen themes such as angst, alienation and social awkwardness, and married them with younger versions of future superheroes like Catwoman, Aquaman’s future wife Mera and now, Raven, from the Teen Titans. It says a lot for the versatility of these characters that they adapt so well to this new approach. Although, to be fair, Kami Garcia with this book had an easier time than most, Raven already has some pretty good emo chops already.

We take a look at the use of sewing in fantasy novels the Unraveling Kingdom series and Spin the Dawn.
Sewing is a bit arcane for people, like myself, who aren’t particularly good at it. I can sew badges onto a Girl Scout uniform and hem pants if pressed, but create a whole new article of clothing? It’s beyond me.
There are plenty of wizards in my social circle who have this skillset, and it always strikes me as magic, so when I encountered Torn by Rowenna Miller last year, I thought it was absolutely appropriate to have the main character as a seamstress who casts charms through her stitching. Since then, two more #stitchwitchery books have hit the shelves: Fray, the second in Miller’s "Unraveled Kingdom" series, and Spin the Dawn, an #OwnVoices series launcher by Elizabeth Lim that adds a Mulan...

Iconic filmmaker John Carpenter is co-writing a new Joker one-shot for DC Comics!
Call it a match made in hell: legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter is co-writing a new Joker one-shot with his Big Trouble in Little China comic book collaborator Anthony Burch (Borderlands 2). The 40-page book is titled The Joker: Year of the Villain #1, a tie-in to the big, baddie-centric DC crossover event coming out of Scott Snyder's Justice League. The book is out on Oct. 2, with art by Philip Tan and Marc Deering.
Here's the synopsis:
Now a human-alien hybrid, Lex Luthor has made his appeal to the world, asking its citizens to embrace doom and give in once and for all to evil, humanity’s true nature. In exchange, he will grant them the tools to ascend to their ultimate selves. While some DC villains (and heroes) are willing to hear what “Apex Lex” has to offer,...

We talked to the author of the new original graphic novel set in the Teen Titans universe.
It has been a good year for DC’s Teen Titans. Just a year ago, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies hit movie theaters. Since then, the characters have starred in a storyline in the Mmo DC Universe Online and had a successful first season launching the new DC Universe streaming service in Titans. Now, the characters are being relaunched in an excellent new original graphic novel run starring individual characters by Ya star Kami Garcia, with pencils by comics newcomer (but fan favorite) Gabriel Picolo.
Teen Titans: Raven reimagines Rachel Roth as a normal teenage girl (if one can be half demon and be normal). “We wanted to portray her as a real teen,” Garcia told Den of Geek. “I just wanted Raven to seem like a girl...

Harley Quinn delves deep into the madness of the Joker in a new DC Black Label comic.
If Batman and Catwoman are a match made in heaven, then the Joker and Harley Quinn are a match made in hell. Both of these couples are getting their own comic series in the next few months, the latter as part of DC's adult-oriented Black Label imprint.
Joker/Harley: Criminal Insanity is a nine-issue miniseries from writer Kami Garcia and artists Mike Mayhew and Mico Suayan that tells the story of Harleen Quinzel, a forensic psychiatrist who arrives in Gotham to examine a serial killer known only as the Joker. If you're familiar with Harley Quinn's canon origin story, then you know this meeting is not going to go well for the psychiatrist.

Sneak Peek a new teaser trailer supporting the DC Ink graphic novel, "Teen Titans: Raven", written by Kami Garcia ("Beautiful Creatures") and illustrated by Gabriel Picolo, available July 2, 2019:
"...when a tragic accident takes the life of the foster mom of seventeen-year-old 'Raven Roth', along with Raven's memory, she moves to New Orleans to live with her foster mother's family and finish her senior year of high school.
"Starting over isn't easy. Raven remembers how to solve math equations and make pasta, but she can'’t remember her favorite song or who she was before the accident. When strange things start happening—things most people would consider impossible—Raven starts to think it might be better not to know who she was in her previous life.
"But as she grows closer to her foster sister 'Max' and 'Tommy Torres', a guy who accepts her for who she is now,...

The world of film-related books has been dominated by Star Wars for the last two years, and that’s not a bad thing. With insightful authors like Pablo Hidalgo and gorgeous efforts like Star Wars: Galactic Maps, there has never been a better time to be force-crazed. This month is no exception, but you’ll also find new releases about Hitchcock, the Marx Brothers, and even two involving X-Files prequels. Let’s start with a book that took on new relevance just weeks after its release.
The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher (Blue Rider Press)
Carrie Fisher’s The Princess Diarist, a hilarious and touching look at her life as Star Wars icon Princess Leia, was a must-read even before the sudden, shocking passing of its author in December. It is even more poignant now. While the book earned pre-release buzz over its revelation of an on-set affair with Harrison Ford,...

Even though Fox's TV series has pretty much followed their relationship from their first meeting together, a new young adult novel series based on "The X-Files" is going even further back in the lives of FBI special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
EW reports that "The X-Files Origins" is the series moniker by which a series of young adult prequel novels are being penned which will explore the separate lives of the two characters back in their teenage years.
In the TV series we learned Scully was a promising doctor from a military family who had various issues of faith throughout her life. Mulder of course was a kid whose existence was changed when his sister was apparently abducted by aliens.
The first novel is Kami Garcia's "Agent of Chaos" which follows a 17-year old Mulder, the second is Jonathan Maberry's "Devil's Advocate" which follows a 15-year old Scully.

The final episode of The X-Files revival airs tonight, and it's going to be sad to see series go away again. Hopefully it's not forever, though! For those of us who will be left with a hankering for more X-Files stories, Imprint/Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group has announced that they will be releasing two new young adult novels that will feature teenage versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
The two X-Files Origins novels will be called Agent of Chaos and Devil’s Advocate, and they take place in the spring of 1979, when Mulder was 17 years old and Scully was only 15. It was during that summer that both characters experienced life-changing events that set them on the path to becoming FBI agents and ultimately working on the X-Files.
Erin Stein, Publisher of Imprint, had this to say in a statement to EW:

Even if you're not a big reader of young adult fiction, you may have seen the advertisements for the new Chloë Grace Moretz movie The 5th Wave and suspected that it looks like the kind of movie that was adapted from a Ya franchise. All the elements are there: a post-apocalyptic dystopia, a winsome female protagonist who stands up to become the world's champion, an imperiled younger sibling and the winning combination of light science fiction and teenaged angst. The 5th Wave is the first in a trilogy of books by Rick Yancey about a group of underage rebels fighting off an alien invasion.

Sundays at San Diego Comic-Con are known for family-friendly fare, but this year there's plenty to keep horror fans sticking around like "Supernatural," "The Strain," and "The Following" (all presenting their wares in the hallowed Hall H).
Along with that trio of horror TV panels, there's plenty more on tap for Day 4 of the 2014 Sdcc, especially if you're a comic lover (you know, those things that started the event in the first place), plus the annual presentation of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.

Launching a new take on the box office-saturated “Paranormal Teen Romance” genre in early 2013 was perhaps not a good idea. Twilight fans were still reeling from the end of their beloved franchise, The Hunger Games Mockingjays were busy gearing up to share what had become a hugely successful franchise, Divergent devotees were busy dream-casting, and Percy Jackson fans (fan?) were far too consumed with celebrating that their (his or her?) series was not dead. Even with strong shelf sales, Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s best-selling “Caster Chronicles” series didn’t seem poised to be the kind of cinematic juggernaut that could compete with Twilight and The Hunger Games and whatever would come next – it simply didn’t have the heat to push it over the top – which is a damn shame, because the duo’s Gothic romance spawned one hell of an underrated feature in Richard Lagravenese’s Beautiful Creatures. When a book becomes a hit, topping bestseller lists and leaving store shelves vacant, one question always quickly follows: “When will it be turned into a movie?”
Audiences have seen this time and time again, with major examples being Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Lord of the Rings series, among many others.
Adapting literature to film can be a win-win situation, as it provides an original story with a built-in audience that will likely buy tickets come opening day. At the same time, not every book translates to box-office success, with some vehicles being better suited to a smaller medium — like TV.
Creating TV adaptations of beloved literature is not a new phenomenon, but it’s one TV executives should increasingly consider in the face of a disappointing fall season.

To say this year has been unkind to young adult adaptations would be an understatement. In February, "Beautiful Creatures" opened with just $7.5 million in ticket sales, this despite being based on the popular Ya novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. In March, "The Host," an adaptation of "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer's Ya novel, underwhelmed with an opening of $10 million. Last weekend, it was "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" that stumbled: the adaptation of Cassandra Claire's popular Ya series grossed only $14 million in its first five days of release. Even the first trailer for the adaptation of Veronica Roth's "Divergent," the series many have pegged as the heir apparent to "The Hunger Games," was met with a few shrugs after it debuted during the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show on Sunday.
This is the world that Mark Waters' adaptation of Richelle Mead's "Vampire Academy" is coming into next year.

Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...

A gripping combination of political history and personal intrigue, Pablo Larraín's No (2012, Network, 15) dramatically recounts the campaign to remove General Pinochet from power during the 1988 Chilean referendum. Based on a stage play by Antonio Skármeta, the action centres on René Saavedra (Gael García Bernal), an advertising executive enlisted to sell the "No" campaign to a nation with the slogan "Happiness is coming", to the displeasure of the hard-line politicos who believe he's belittling their cause.
The completion of a thematic trilogy (following Tony Manero and Post Mortem), No benefits from Larraín's bold use of boxy, grainy U-matic video stock, which enables him to blend latterday recreations with authentic archival TV footage. The result is a seamless mix of fact and fiction, brought together through a unifying aesthetic in which the medium perfectly fits the message.

While it has a lot of humor and a little charm, Beautiful Creatures suffers from a rushed story, poor editing, and poor use of such a great ensemble cast. The film has a lot to like in it, but those elements never come together to capture the magic of its story and setting. Based on the popular novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (which I will admit I have not read), the film was written for screen and directed by Richard Lagravenese (P.S. I Love You), and features a stellar cast including Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, Thomas Mann, Emma Thompson, Margo Martindale, Eileen Atkins, Zoey Deutch, Tiffany Boone, Rachel Brosnahan, Kyle...

In the wake of Star Wars’ massive and surprisingly success, studios went looking for the next Star Wars. We’ve seen this cycle again and again, which has led to some good things (the revival of Star Trek in 1979) and some bad (the original Battlestar Galactica). Hungry authors have been more than happy to fill the order with way too many urban fantasies reading like made-to-order hash. What everyone loses sight of is that Star Wars and Twilight each staked out territory that had not been overly mined in the period before their arrival. So, what makes any of the imitators succeed is how well executed it is and how much the formula is given fresh ingredients to keep it from feeling like warmed up leftovers.

So what will the fates have in store for The Mortal Instruments? Based on the first book in the series by Cassandra Clare, the new movie stars Lily Collins as Clary Fray, a seemingly...
