In the realm of the supernatural genre, The Vampire Diaries occupies a very special separate space for being an incredibly intriguing and fascinating series about blood-sucking fictional beings known as Vampires. Having won several awards and fashioned off several spin-offs, the series remain as beloved as ever despite its end in 2017.

What made the tale even more interesting was that the series took creative liberty to expand upon the concepts of ‘Originals’ aka the first-ever Vampires, in turn leading to an equally successful series, The Originals. The concept turned out to be instrumental to the success of The Vampire Diaries, yet Ian Somerhalder has a good reason to be bitter about the show.

Fifteen years ago, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson thought that, on the heels of True Blood and Twilight, vampires were becoming a bit overrated.
Luckily, they didn’t listen to that instinct when they forged ahead with an adaptation of L. J. Smith’s fantasy horror novel, The Vampire Diaries, for The CW.
The pilot aired on Sept. 10, 2009, and, not only was it a resounding success, putting up what at the time was the largest premiere audience since the network debuted three years earlier, it also spawned an entire franchise that would last more than a decade. The Vampire Diaries would also influence pop culture and the entire young adult genre in unpredictable ways — so much so that it’s still worth talking about seven years after the final episode.

It’s been 15 years since audiences were introduced to Mystic Falls and its vampires, love triangles and teenage drama. And still, The Vampire Diaries holds a special place for many viewers.
Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW on Sept. 10, 2009, and ran for eight seasons,. Now, to celebrate the milestone anniversary, showrunner Julie Plec looks back on the series she created with Kevin Williamson and how it launched a supernatural franchise.
She recalls wanting to “tell a really emotional story that was sexy and romantic and scary and all the things,” while also creating “something that felt timeless, that could live on and continue to feel like anybody, any generation at any time can connect to it.”
Julie Plec
And to accomplish that, Plec and Williamson knew they had to build a solid team that could produce stories with “creative integrity and that we’re deeply emotional and highly entertaining.”

Julie Plec, co-creator of the hit supernatural drama “The Vampire Diaries,” has hinted at the possibility of a new series in the franchise. During a promotional event for her new Max series “The Girls on The Bus,” Plec shared her enthusiasm for expanding the “Vampire Diaries” universe.
“I have a story I still want to tell,” Plec told Screen Rant. “I know that the people who are on the book have a story that they still want to tell. I’m sure Warner Bros. has plenty of stories they want to tell. So, the hope is they’ll give me the opportunity to do it again. We’ll see.”
While no specific details were provided about the potential new series, Plec suggested that L. J. Smith’s original novels could serve as inspiration. The franchise, which began with “The Vampire Diaries” in 2009, has already spawned two successful spin-offs: “The Originals” and “Legacies.

When it comes to the gothic and horror supernatural genre, vampires have consistently been explored in both shows and movies. Over the years, there have been multiple interpretations ranging from romantic fantasies and action to comedy and supernatural horror. Among many notable entries has been the CW teen drama starring Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, and Nina Dobrev, which has earned acclaim as one of the best vampire TV shows.

However, the concept of a teen drama revolving around supernatural forces did not seem appealing to Somerhalder, who played the role of Damon Salvatore in the series, when he first received the script. The actor recalled throwing it away believing the makers were attempting to bring The Twilight Saga to the small screen.

Exclusive: Actress Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) has signed with Untitled Entertainment for management, with partner Evan Hainey to run point on her behalf.
“Funny enough Evan helped start my career well over a decade ago and we have remained good friends ever since,” Graham told Deadline. “I have consistently turned to him for guidance over the years as I navigated my journey in this industry, and he has never steered me wrong. This is a natural alignment. I am very grateful to join forces with a great man and solid friend like him.”
Graham broke out with her series regular role as witch Bonnie Bennett across all eight seasons of The CW’s supernatural teen drama The Vampire Diaries, which aired between 2009 and 2017. Developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, the show based on L.J. Smith’s books had her starring alongside Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, and more.

Back in 2009, Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson teamed with Julie Plec to develop a series of novels by author L.J. Smith into the television series The Vampire Diaries. After running for eight seasons, The Vampire Diaries wrapped up in 2017 – and if there’s ever an attempt to reboot or revive the show, don’t expect to see Paul Wesley reprise the role of Stefan Salvatore in the new episodes. Speaking with InStyle, Wesley (who played Stefan for the entire 171 episode run) said such a project would get a “hard pass” from him.
Wesley went on to say, “I would never do another vampire anything, period, let alone Vampire Diaries.” When asked if he misses anything about playing Stefan, he answered, “I don’t really miss anything about playing him, and I don’t mean that in a [negative way]. Eight years is a long time, and I’m so glad to put that to rest.

When it comes to vampires, you’re talking about the lesser of two evils, literally. When The Vampire Diaries began, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) was presumably the bad boy to Stefan (Paul Wesley). Still, they were both vampires. Embodying the darker side of the equation, Somerhalder said at the time that he found a way to relate to Damon.

Somerhalder was on a Television Critics Panel for The Vampire Diaries’ first season in January 2010. He said tapping into Damon’s loneliness helped him play the character.
Damon was just lonely on ‘The Vampire Diaries’
Damon was feuding with his brother and the love of his life, Katherine (Nina Dobrev), died. Fortunately, Katherine would come back and Stefan would remain entangled in his life. But, eternal life gave Damon a lot of down time.

Spoiler alert for The Vampire Diaries, but even the human characters didn’t stay human for long. Nina Dobrev played Elena on the show, the center of the love triangle between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley). Candice King played Caroline, and both became vampires by the second season. It was a surprise to them both.

The Vampire Diaries was based on the books by L.J. Smith. Over eight seasons, the show took some liberties. It still featured Damon (Iam Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev), but they had a few new adventures. Those included a Katherine (also Dobrev) subplot.

The Vampire Diaries was serious drama about love and vampires. It ran for eight seasons and launched two spinoffs on The CW. But, the cast and crew kept things light on the set. Vampire Diaries bloopers abounded so it was hard to take the melodrama too seriously.

Tvd aired eight seasons from 2009 to 2017, introducing audiences to several wonderful characters.
One of those characters was our beloved witch Bonnie Bennett, played by Geneva-born and LA-raised actor Kat Graham. According to Graham, playing Bonnie helped her grow up.

When vampires are the lovers, The Vampire Diaries had to come up with villains even more dangerous than vampires. Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) was a good one. The Vampire Diaries was about vampires and teenagers, right? Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) vied for the affections of Elena (Nina Dobrev), and it got complicated. But, to co-creator Kevin Williamson, The Vampire Diaries was about something more. Set in the fictional Mystic Falls, Va, to Williamson the show was a small town story.

The Vampire Diaries was late to the vampire lit party. The Twilight movie franchise had already begun in 2008 and True Blood had run for several seasons on HBO. By 2009, The Vampire Diaries co-creator Kevin Williamson was worried the show would be seen as a rip-off so he turned it down.

The Vampire Diaries made Paul Wesley the obsession of Stefan stans for eight seasons. Turns out, Wesley counted himself among them. Landing the lead role on the series fulfilled that obsession.

The Vampire Diaries was hardly the first vampire show on television. Buffy, the Vampire Slayer pioneered makeup effects for vampires and other creatures. Of course there was Dark Shadows, and Vampire Diaries even came after True Blood. But one of co-creator Kevin Williamson’s big pet peeves was “cheap effects” so he devised The Vampire Diaries makeup to avoid that look.

Nearly every culture has come up with some variation of the vampire myth. From ancient Romanian storytellers sharing cautionary tales about the shapeshifting Strigoi to modern-day LARPers putting on plastic fangs and hanging out in goth bars, it’s clear that our fascination with undead bloodsuckers is far more than a simple fad. That’s why it’s no surprise that popular culture has been borrowing from vampiric folklore for years, especially when it comes to television.
While some of the reasoning behind the popularity of vampires on the small screen is practical, an even simpler explanation is that the tragic and romantic qualities of the immortal Nosferatu make them uniquely suited for weekly dramas. And with so much vampiric media out there, we decided to come up with this list of six must-watch vampire shows to quench your thirst for televised bloodshed.
As usual, this list is purely based on personal opinion,...

Is "The Vampire Diaries" your go-to rewatch? We can't say there's anything instinctively comforting about vampires, but there is a certain quality about Elena and the Salvatore brothers that keeps us coming back when we just don't want to start something new. Boy, do we miss the drama of that love triangle - especially in the early seasons.
Without giving too much away (and spoiling the trivia questions ahead!), the show features a group of teens in a sleepy town who find out there are supernatural beings all around them. Over the course of several seasons, there are violent deaths, people turning into vampires (and other creatures), love, betrayal, and of course, plenty of drama from beginning to end.
The show may have ended with a little heartbreak and moderate happiness in 2017, but thankfully, the story continued with not one spinoff but two. Test your knowledge of this supernatural world...

Dear Diary, can you believe it's been 12 years since The Vampire Diaries premiered? It feels like just yesterday that we were immediately compelled by the love triangle between Elena (Nina Dobrev), Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder), but The CW hit series actually premiered on Sept. 10, 2009, transporting viewers to Mystic Falls. Based on the book series by L.J. Smith and created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, Tvd ran for eight seasons, produced two successful spinoffs (The Originals and Legends) and delivered one of TV's most epic love triangles. But can you believe Nina almost lost the role of Elena to a High School Musical star? Or that Ian was this close to starring in a...

Dear diary, can you believe it's been more than 10 years since The Vampire Diaries premiered? While it was initially written off as a TV version of Twilight, the CW hit, which debuted on Sept. 10, 2009, quickly developed a cult following that turned the show into one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons, blending together epic romances, supernatural beings and small town drama to create one irresistible series that helped redefine the young network. Based on the book series by L.J. Smith, Tvd was created by Dawson's Creek creator Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, two people who know a thing or two about iconic teenage love triangles. But Kevin almost passed...

Whether we love them wholeheartedly or as guilty pleasures, Young Adult books make for great reading and TV material.
Unfortunately, TV is prone to making the same adaptational mistakes with Ya books as they are with any other type of literature.
Fortunately, TV is always searching for it next teen hit, so there's plenty of opportunities to finally give these Ya books a proper TV adaptation.
Let start with Pretty Little Liars because even though it aired for seven seasons, there's quite a demand for a redo.
Compared to the TV version, the Pretty Little Liars books, written by Sara Shepard, had far more substance.
For one thing, the books were much better plotted whereas the TV series was nonsensical.
The books were much better in how it depicted mental health.
Despite its great casting, the TV series did a huge disservice to the characters. The TV show radically changed...

The Good Place vet Manny Jacinto will be spending some quality time with Nicole Kidman in Hulu’s forthcoming limited series Nine Perfect Strangers.
Per our sister site Deadline, Jacinto has joined the star-studded cast, which also includes Melissa McCarthy. The drama, based on Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty’s book, is set at a boutique health-and-wellness resort, where nine stressed city dwellers try to get on a path to a better way of living. Jacinto will play Yao, a man-kid with a hipster vibe who has a life-and-death encounter with the resort’s director, Masha (Kidman), after which he becomes her right-hand man.

Vampire shows, much like vampires, can’t stay dead forever.
As “The Vampire Diaries” executive producer Julie Plec mourns the end of her long-running series, she also isn’t closing the door on the franchise. For one thing, the show’s spin-off, “The Originals,” is back for another season. And in this age of reboots, nothing ever really goes away.
Quips Plec: “In ten years when I’m unemployed and bored and someone calls and says, ‘Hey, Netflix is looking for a six-episode revival of “The Vampire Diaries,”‘ I will go, ‘fuck yeah, thanks Netflix!'”
But seriously, the executive producer says she has already planted some seeds that will provide “ways the franchise can live on even outside of these two shows, and one day soon I...

In a surprising development for streaming video, Amazon Prime has obtained the rights to HBO shows. Don’t cancel your cable subscription just yet, the deal only covers older HBO shows, plus Girls and Veep episodes that are more than three years old. Still, the news is a pretty big deal. Netflix has long had older episodes of Showtime’s series (and now Hulu has a few shows), but HBO has resisted letting its shows appear anywhere but HBO Go. Game of Thrones and True Detective as well as Sex and the City (which airs in syndication) aren’t included.
Recently, CBS renewed The Big Bang Theory for three seasons, which would take it to season ten. Showrunner Steve Molaro tells The Hollywood Reporter that, for now at least, he’s approaching that tenth season as the final one, which would give the show a Friends-sized run.

The likable vampire seems like somewhat of a paradox. Since the earliest incarnation of count Dracula, the vampire has typically been somewhat of a reviled species. However, over time, it has been scientifically proven (no it hasn’t) that audiences find vampires irresistibly sexy and dangerous but charming.
Contemporary vampire fiction has forever changed the landscape of vampire cinema and television. We now see vampires cast as the protagonists and antiheroes in movies and TV, as opposed to being almost exclusively cast in the role of the villain. Anne Rice was a pioneer of vampire fiction in her heyday and still continues to be. She was undoubtedly a huge inspiration for L.J. Smith (The Vampire Diaries Books) and Charlaine Harris (The Sookie Stackhouse Novels). Both authors have further changed the light in which vampires are portrayed, both in fiction and on the big and small screens. We didn’t forget to mention Stephanie Meyer.

Young Adult book properties are becoming cinematic fare all over the place, but when it comes to TV there've been a few significant hold-ups this season. ... The CW has now passed on its second piloting effort for "The Selection," an adaptation of Kiera Cass' bestselling Ya novel. The CW gave its "Selection" adaptation a second chance by ordering up a new script and starting the cast over from scratch with a seasoned director at the helm, but to no avail. The second effort was said to be much more adult than the book or the first pilot attempt and took noteworthy liberties with the characters and bedroom behaviors included -- a formula which has panned out well for the network with "The Vampire Diaries," which is at this point very loosely based upon L.J. Smith's novel series. Fellow Ya book-to-small screener "Delirium" was also passed on (by Fox) this week.

There’s something both appropriate and ominous about an episode of The Vampire Diaries that starts off in a cemetery. Given that season 4 has accumulated the highest body count of any season thus far, the Mystic Falls cemetery must be seeing a huge boom in business. Although many of this season’s victims will never make it to a marked grave, there have been plenty of human casualties as well. And, the fact that the prom episode started off in this grim location doesn’t bode well for the events that follow.
The season started off with a mass murder of 12 council members, and with two additional sets of murders, has at least tripled. And, that number doesn’t account for any of the casualties of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or recurring characters that have been put to rest e.g. Mayor Lockwood. Needless to say,...

Since the premiere of The Vampire Diaries, or actually, since we first read L.J. Smith’s novels, we’ve been dying for two things: For Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder to come public with their sexy love, and for Elena to become a vampire. Wish #1 came true last year, and it looks almost certain that #2 would be coming to pass when the show returns for season four on October 11. But it seems like Nina/Elena never wanted these things to be inevitable.
First, we have Nina, who graces the cover of Seventeen this month and fully laughs at her past rules against dating a co-star. “The first time I was on the cover of Seventeen, the cover line said, ‘Nina: Why she wouldn’t date any of her co-stars.’ And then cut to two years later … it’s funny that I said that, but you know what? It was honestly...

While the Twi-hard world struggles to put the pieces back together following last week’s Kristen Stewart cheating news, fans of another vampire couple might be understandably wary of putting too much faith in their real-life romance. So far as we know, The Vampire Diaries stars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder are still going strong. (And we’re reeeeallly hoping that now that Elena is a vampire, she’ll follow in the L.J. Smith books’ plot and fully fall for Damon onscreen too.) But that doesn’t mean that there are wedding bells in their near future, either.

I’m not sure what hurts more after last night’s season three finale of The Vampire Diaries, my eyes from all the crying or my neck from all the head-spinning. Like every finale (and yeah, every other Episode) the show has given us before, this was a game changer for Elena, the Salvatores, their friends and their enemies. So, if you haven’t seen the episode yet, you definitely should stop reading now.

The CW has given early pickups to its series "The Vampire Diaries," "Supernatural" and "90210," the network said Thursday. "The Vampire Diaries," based on the series of books by L.J. "Secret Circle" fans, you're in for a treat. John Blackwell isn't the only fallen witch returning from the dead before the end of the first season.
Zap2it has exclusively confirmed that Nick (Louis Hunter), who was killed in a surprise twist in the fifth episode back in the fall, is coming back to Chance Harbor! Of course, he's not quite the same bad boy with the heart of gold who we mourned last year. Death by drowning, apparently, can change a guy.
"We are thrilled to have Nick back, but he's not the same person as he was before," executive producer Andrew Miller tells us. "The Circle is stunned, but those closest to Nick, his brother Jake and girlfriend Melissa, find themselves on opposite sides as they struggle with how to deal with his unnatural return."
Given how well we've gotten to know Jake (Chris Zylka) since Nick's death,...

Vampire Diaries season 3 producer hints Elena could turn into a vampire & more. As previously reported, the Vampire Diaries cast recently hit up Paleyfest this past weekend, and gave a ton of spoilers at the panel. Now a new report from Hollywood Life reveals that producer Julie Plec hasn't totally shot down the possibility that Elena could get turned into a vampire in the future. They say,she was asked the question at the event, and she replied with, "We’ll see. There’s a wealth of stories that have been given to us from these books. There’s things we’ve decided to do and things we’ve said maybe not for us. So I would say I don’t know." They pointed out that it isn't a definite confirmation. However,it isn't a flat-out "no" either, and she shoots down rumors that are entirely untrue. Plus the "we'll see" answer suggest that they are,...

'Vampire Diaries' creator Julie Plec teased that Elena-with-fangs could be a possibility. Do you want that to happen? Mystic Falls' finest descended upon Los Angeles this weekend for Paleyfest, dropping hints at some pretty major plot points to come on The Vampire Diaries. And even though I was basically drooling during the entire panel discussion, one question in particular is still ringing through my ears two days later: Will Elena (Nina Dobrev) ever turn into a vampire, like she does in L.J. Smith's original book series? Executive Producer Julie Plec, who I now consider to be the master of the artful tease, gave this cryptic response: "We'll see." "There’s a wealth of stories that have been given to us from these books," Julie said. "There’s things we’ve decided to do and things we’ve said maybe not for us. So I would say I don’t know.
