It’s always fun to discuss horror novels that Aren’T Stephen King. No knock on the monster from Maine, he’s the master of horror novels over the last, oh I don’t know, 50 years, for a reason but its nice to not have the show be solely dedicated to his adapted works. He says knowing that he makes the schedule and decides what books to cover. See you in May, Mr. King! Funnily enough, the man actually loved today’s subject to the degree that he called it one of 2006’s best horror novels, but more on that in a little bit. The Ruins (watch it Here) was one of those hot properties by an author whose previous work was an instant success with critics, fans, and studio executives that put it to celluloid. The book came out and just two years later we were given a movie...

Forgiven for Forgetting
After starting the year with one of the best horror sequels of all time in Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we moved into the hilariously smart German satire Killer Condom. Trace and I should have known the good times wouldn’t last!
With this week’s discussion of Renny Harlin‘s The Covenant, we begin a two-week stretch of poorly rated, very dumb thrillers. In the film, Caleb (Steven Strait) is a member of the popular Boys of Ipswich at an elite boarding school. He also has a dangerous birthright: the men in his family can use The Power to get what they want.
The trade-off? The more they use their abilities, the faster they age, as evidenced by his father’s (Stephen McHattie) condition.
Things change with the arrival of dangerous bad boy Chase (Sebastian Stan). Suddenly both Caleb’s relationship with Sarah (Laura Ramsey) and his 18th birthday ascension are under threat.

After almost passing up No One Lives and mistaking it for something generic, Ryūhei Kitamura set out to make a fun and exciting horror movie. And he more than succeeded without sacrificing the fear and personality found in the original script. With Robert Hall’s bloody practical effects sweetening the pot, this movie ends up being a delightfully gory action-slasher.
The initial setup of No One Lives is both familiar and misleading. The cold open shows an imperiled young woman (Adelaide Clemens) running through the woods. It is only when she is caught by her unseen pursuer does the audience learn her name: Emma. Using a broken piece of glass, she desperately scratches her name, while upside down, in a nearby tree before presumably dying off screen. Several months later, the story shifts to Luke Evans and Laura Ramsey’s characters, who pause their road trip and stop at a motel out in the sticks.

Lifetime has announced two new TV movies, “A Rose For Her Grave” and “Desperate Hours,” both inspired by novels from author Ann Rule.
“A Rose For Her Grave” stars Chrishell Stause of “Selling Sunset” fame, Colin Egglesfield and Laura Ramsey, and follows serial wife-killer Randy Roth opposite the woman who finally brings him to justice.
Gina Gershon will serve as a first-time director for “Desperate Hours.” Samantha Mathis, Harrison Thomas and David Conrad star in the film. The screenplay is an adaptation of Rule’s novel “Last Chance.” The film follows a mother who finds herself and her young children held hostage by a man who forces his way into their home after committing a murder earlier in the day.
Both films will debut on the network in 2023.

Hitting the "big 3-0" can be a big deal -- it's a chance to celebrate the end of your 20s, and also the age where you have to admit that you're finally an honest-to-goodness grown-up. Thankfully, there are some great TV shows to get you through the transition and give you some previews of the chaos and joy ahead.
1. 'Parenthood' (2010 - 2015)
"Parenthood" provides one of the more realistic TV portrayals of what it means to become an adult in your own family. An updated version of the classic 1980s movie of the same name, "Parenthood" is the story of the Bravermans -- four adult siblings, their spouses, their six kids, and their aging parents -- and how they all manage to support each other through various crises. Each character grows into new phases of adulthood over the course of six seasons, and the ensuing joy and heartache creates a compelling emotional journey for viewers.

"Burn Notice" creator Matt Nix's medical drama "Complications" for the USA Network has been cancelled. Jason O'Mara starred in the series as a doctor who becomes involved in a gang war after the death of his daughter.
It and "Mr. Robot" were the two new series the network launched this past summer. 'Robot' has already been picked up for second season and has been generating a lot of buzz, "Complications" never really took off.
With the network set to offer strong new dramas like "Colony" and "Queen of the South" shortly, the series isn't being given a chance to continue.
In other cancellation news, VH1 has rescinded its second season order for its dreamed "Hindsight" and have opted to cancel the series despite the first season scoring good notices. Laura Ramsey starred in the series as a woman who, on the eve of her second wedding in 2015, is transported...

VH1 has canceled its scripted time-travel dramedy Hindsight, despite having renewed the show for a second season back in March. The series, about a woman (Laura Ramsey) who gets transported back to 1995 on the eve of her second wedding for a life do-over, debuted back in January to rave reviews; Vulture's own Margaret Lyons praised the show's "perfect vision" in her review. In a statement, the network explained, "We love Hindsight and couldn’t be more proud of the series. But in this overcrowded and rapidly changing climate, we need to carve out VH1’s distinct place in the scripted marketplace and deliver the biggest audiences possible for our series." Maybe VH1 doesn't love the '90s as much as we all thought.

“Hindsight” will not return for a second season on VH1, despite having been renewed in March. “We love ‘Hindsight’ and couldn’t be more proud of the series,” the network said in a statement. “But in this overcrowded and rapidly changing climate, we need to carve out VH1’s distinct place in the scripted marketplace and deliver the biggest audiences possible for our series. As a result, we’re no longer moving forward with a second season of the show.” The series followed Becca (Laura Ramsey, pictured above), who’s approaching 40 years old and a second marriage. The quirky, charming, ’90s time-travel dramedy Hindsight will indeed be back for a second season, VH1 tells Vulture exclusively. The show recently finished its first season, which found our heroine Becca (Laura Ramsey) accidentally back in 1995, on the eve of her first wedding, with a chance to make all of her big decisions over again — not that she does such a great job even with the do-over. There's no firm date for when the show will return, but the fact that it's coming back at all is a real relief. Viva whimsy.

Fan fiction is more prevalent than you might think. With Fifty Shades of Grey being unleashed in theaters Friday, there's no denying that the novel's author, E L James, has brought fan fiction into the spotlight. After the racy material within the story forced James to pull it from FanFiction.net, she next hosted Master of the Universe on her own website called 50Shades.com (which now redirects to her official author page). Last night, VH1 debuted its latest scripted drama, Hindsight, and all things considered, it’s actually pretty good – if you can get past the idea that clogs were ever a fashionable option for women’s footwear.
The show revolves around Becca, played by Laura Ramsey (Mad Men), a familiar face, but still relatively under the radar. On the eve of her second wedding, in a very Thirteen Going on Thirty trippy teleportive way, Becca is transported back to the nineties just in time to be faced with the reality of making the same mistakes for a second time.
The pilot itself is mainly concerned with establishing the characters, most of whom you meet both in present day and then as younger versions of themselves, and setting the groundwork for the series as a whole. It answers most of the basic questions – how, what, where, when – but leaves a heavy question mark hanging over the why.

Matthew Weiner of Mad Men fame is coming you way with his feature film writing/directing debut, Are You Here. The bizarre-sounding story is brought to you with a cast you might expect isn’t difficult for someone with Mad Men under his belt to get into his film.
Ben (Zach Galifianakis) inherits a sizable fortune when his father dies, despite the fact that Ben lives off-the-grid and had been estranged from his father. Steve Dalls (Owen Wilson), a womanizer and local television personality, is a friend of Ben’s, and decides to join up with Ben to fight the legal battle brought by Ben’s sister (Amy Poehler), but there’s a lot more going on than that. Check the trailer below for more of an idea of the ins and outs of friendship that are explored in this one.

The new film Are You Here follows Steve Dallas (Owen Wilson), a womanizing weatherman, and his slightly off best friend, Ben Baker (Zach Galifianakis), as they return to Ben’s childhood home after his estranged father passes away. Upon learning that Ben has inherited a majority of the family fortune, the two friends must deal not only with the strain these events are having on their friendship, but with Ben’s controlling and bitter sister (Amy Poehler), Ben’s father’s beautiful young widow (Laura Ramsey), and each of their own shortcomings as they try to straighten out and take control of their lives

Chicago – You would think that a film written and directed by Matthew Weiner – the creator of “Mad Men” – would be worthwhile company, especially when the cast includes Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson and Amy Poehler. It is disappointing to note that not only was this cliché-ridden mess unpalatable, but it also switched gears two-thirds of the way through to evoke a different mood, and that schizophrenia didn’t help the overall product.

The story of two dysfunctional friends who go to the country because one of them has inherited the farm sounds ho-hum just in that description, and everything that happens seems wedged in by presenting a series of assigned stereotypes instead of interesting characters. Owen Wilson, now pushing 50, is again portraying his familiar puppy dog womanizer character, which is now as creaky as his standard tousled hair cut. Zach Galifianakis again plays the puffy and confused stoner manboy, but...

On the latest episode of TheWrap's popular video series “Drinking With the Stars,” Laura Ramsey, who plays the female lead alongside Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis in Matthew Weiner‘s comedy “Are You Here,” sat down with film reporter Jeff Sneider to discuss how her experience on “Mad Men” helped her land the coveted role. Ramsey and Sneider enjoyed drinks at Mixology at The Grove in West Hollywood, where the up-and-coming actress looked completely different than she does in “Are You Here.” Also watch: Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson and Amy Poehler Help Matthew Weiner Do Comedy in ‘Are You Here’ Trailer (Video) Despite.

If Matthew Weiner‘s name wasn’t on Are You Here, you never would’ve guessed this movie came from the mind behind Mad Men. The focus, power, subtlety and charms of his AMC drama are nowhere to be found in his feature directorial debut. The staggering drop in quality is disappointing, but worse than that, even on its own terms, Are You Here is a notable misfire. Are We Here is about two seemingly different friends, Steve (Owen Wilson) and Ben (Zach Galifianakis), and how the death of Ben’s father challenges and enriches their friendship and those around them. Ben — who is considered a failure by his family — inherits most of his father’s money, which he was left to clean up his act. This delights the selfish and greedy Steve, while disappointing Ben’s sister, Terri (Amy Poehler). She had plans for her father’s shop, land and money. Since...

Writer-director Matthew Weiner, creator of the magnificent Mad Men, has made a feature film — theoretically a comedy — that's just shy of terrible. Owen Wilson is Steve Dallas, a boozy Maryland TV weatherman who has no discernible life, and is proud of it. His lifelong friend, Ben (Zach Galifianakis), is a shut-in, and given to episodes of mania.
Ben's father dies and leaves his vast Pennsylvania farm and fortune to his son, much to the dismay of his shrill, Daddy-loyal sister (Amy Poehler). Steve, who has prostitutes on speed dial, begins wooing Angela (Laura Ramsey), the free-spirited young wife of the dead father.
When she tells Steve that "I try to avoid things that keep me from feeling," you know that by movie's end, Steve is going to be feeling...

After several cast changes and an eight-year journey to the screen, Matthew Weiner’s feature directorial Are You Here finally made its Hollywood premiere last night at the Arclight on Sunset Blvd. This Friday, Millennium Entertainment will unspool the film, which stars Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler, in limited theaters as well as on DVD.
“Like most of what I do, this is a genre-less film,” Weiner told the audience before the projector rolled, “Laugh where you want to laugh.”
Despite his reputation for creating the monumental, award-winning period TV drama Mad Men, Weiner’s uphill battle to get Are You Here made further underscores the challenges of getting adult feature dramas off the ground. With its comedic star wattage cast and a set-up that involves a crazed stoner (Galifianakis) inheriting a farm after his father’s death with his weatherman philandering friend along for the ride (Wilson...

One Has to Ask: Weiner’s Debut a Floundering Misfire
Success sometimes has a blindsiding effect on self-criticism and control, which may very well be the excuse for the feature directorial debut of “Mad Men” and “The Sopranos” scribe Matthew Weiner, Are You Here, which is a nauseous, floundering excuse for a film. If you’re confused about whether you’re meant to laugh at or feel pity for these unengaging stereotyped people, it’s probably because the cast seems unsure of this as well. Painfully, obnoxiously miscast, there isn’t one single moment that works in the entire film, which is nearly two hours. Originally titled You Are Here when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2013, it’s as if the refashioning of statement to question is posed for anyone left in the audience that stayed until the end credits.

You know you’re in for a tough time with a movie, especially a comedy, when the promotion centres around one of the smaller roles and Not the films leads. And so is the case with Awful Nice. Yes, despite the appearance of Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Svu, True Blood) amongst the cast of unknowns, the apparent star of this film – at least according to the PR spiel rolled out for the movie so far – is “British FHM darling Keely Hazell”.
Yeah doesn’t look good does it?
Awful Nice tells the story of Jim and Dave. Two brothers who haven’t seen each other in years, but when their father unexpectedly dies, they are forced to travel down to Branson together to redeem their inheritance; the family’s lake house.

Dysfunctional families have been extremely fertile ground for Hollywood for a long time, as has been made clear by the abundance of dramas like August: Osage Country and Nebraska, and comedies like Little Miss Sunshine and the upcoming This Is Where I Leave You. Now, audiences can look forward to another film that explores broken family dynamics – Are You Here, which stars Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis.
A new trailer for the flick, which focuses on a weatherman (Wilson) who accompanies his childhood friend (Galifianakis) to the reading of his late father’s will, has hit the web, and you can check it out below.
Normally, the involvement of Wilson and Galifianakis alone would be enough to get me excited, but the supporting cast for Are You Here is also superb. Amy Poehler (NBC’s Parks & Recreation) plays Terry, sister of Galifianakis’ flighty man-child, who understandably isn’t too happy...

Matthew Weiner has been working on Are You Here, an ode to and examination of what he calls the “myth of male friendship,” for over a decade. He started writing the film between his first two years at The Sopranos, just around the point in his life when he started looking around and wondering where all his friends had gone.
It took Weiner nearly eight years to get the script to Owen Wilson, two breaks from Mad Men to shoot it, and two more seasons to edit and finish the film. But after showcasing an in-progress cut at the 2013 Toronto...
