In addition, Murai will produce “Bushido,” with Henry Dunham serving as a writer and producer.

Additional details are under wraps but the project is said to be inspired by “To Catch a Predator,” the 2000s-era reality show in which host Chris Hansen aimed to expose alleged sexual predators. Hansen would use hidden cameras while orchestrating sting operations that lured culprits to homes under the pretense of having sex with a minor, only to have the suspect arrested.

Oppenheim, whose documentary credits also include “Some Kind of Heaven,” a look at the world’s largest retirement community, and “Spermworld,” following the story of sperm donors, recipients, and all that connects them, is directing from a screenplay by Ajon Singh.

When Cj Entertainment, the production team behind Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet, got the idea of remaking the 2003 cult Korean sci-fi comedy, they didn’t expect it to get so big.

This was before the release of Bong Joon-ho’s multi-Oscar winner Parasite, before Korean cinema exploded worldwide and before Cj Entertainment became one of the biggest global production outfits with its 2022 acquisition of Endeavor Content (now Fifth Season).

“[Cj Enm] was sort of an unknown production company from a marginalized place then,” said Jerry Jerry Ko, head of Cj Enm’s film division, speaking at a forum on Navigating the New Paradigm at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival.

“We started out with the belief that the film’s concept was ahead of its time and that [maybe we] could make an indie movie, but as we traveled around Hollywood, we realized that there were many hidden fans of the original film.

Universal Pictures will release Bugonia internationally, excluding Korea, where Cj Enm will handle the local release. The film, written by Will Tracy, follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

Bugonia sees Lanthimos leave his recent home of Searchlight Pictures, which has released many of his films, including the Oscar winners Poor Things and The Favourite as well as the upcoming Kinds of Kindness. Lanthimos’ latest movie is based on the South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet!, written and directed by Jang Joon-Hwan and produced by Sidus.

Stone also worked with Lanthimos on The Favourite and Poor Things, while Plemons and Stone appear in Kinds of Kindness.

Six-time Oscar-nominated director Lanthimos recently collaborated with Stone and fellow “Bugonia” star Jesse Plemons on “Kinds of Kindness,” which debuted at Cannes 2024.
