Belinda, a Mexican and Spanish popstar who appeared on Disney Channel’s The Cheetah Girls 2, stands up for Selena Gomez after Eugenio Derbez criticized her work on Emilia Pérez.

In a social media post, Belinda noted that she usually refrains from commenting on other people’s lives, but after watching Derbez’s criticism, she felt compelled to defend Gomez.

“I think it’s unfortunate that people express themselves with such coldness of the work and effort of a talented and admirable woman like Selena Gomez,” Belinda wrote on her Instagram Stories.

She continued, “We need to be more empathetic with the comments we make, which can hurt people’s feelings. I wish social media was used for constructive criticism instead of destructive criticism.”

Belinda said that Gomez might not read her message but congratulated her for “everything you have achieved in your career,” adding, “We are billions of people who love everything you do.

Following a response from Selena Gomez, Eugenio Derbez is walking back his criticism of her performance in Emilia Pérez with a heartfelt apology.

The 2x Emmy nominee, who previously deemed Gomez “indefensible,” ate his words after she commented on the clip that she “did the best I could with the time I was given.”

“I truly apologize for my careless comments—they are indefensible and go against everything I stand for,” he shared on TikTok. “As Latinos, we should always support one another. There’s no excuse. I was wrong, and I deeply admire your career and your kind heart.

“Selena is indefensible,” Derbez said. “I [watched the film] with people, and every time she had a scene, we looked at each other to say to each other, ‘Wow, what is this?'”

On Monday, the Palm Springs International Film Festival announced that the 28-year-old American actor will receive the Chairman’s Award at its annual gala on Jan. 3, 2025. This honor specifically recognizes Chalamet’s performance in James Mangold‘s “A Complete Unknown” from Searchlight Pictures, a biopic of music legend Bob Dylan.

The opening night movie will be Paramount Pictures’ “Better Man,” starring Robbie Williams and directed by Michael Gracey, which chronicles the pop star’s meteoric rise and dramatic fall. And the festival will close with Sony Pictures Classics’ “The Penguin Lessons,” starring Steve Coogan and directed by Peter Cattaneo, in the dramedy about a teacher whose life changes when he adopts a penguin. Two days after being chosen as the recipient of the Cinema Vanguard Award at this year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Adrien Brody has been awarded another top honor at an influential awards season stop.

2024 is shaping up to be a good year for Selena Gomez. She is currently starring in one of Hulu/Disney+’s most popular shows Only Murders In The Building, which was recently renewed for a fifth series.

Steve McQueen’s filmography will be feted at the 2024 Middleburg Film Festival.

The annual festival, which will take place from October 17 through 20, will honor Academy Award winner McQueen with the Visionary Director Award. McQueen’s latest film “Blitz” will open the festival, and the auteur will participate in a post-screening conversation.

“Blitz” follows the “epic journey of George (Elliott Heffernan), a 9-year-old boy whose mother Rita (Saoirse Ronan) sends him to safety in the English countryside. George, defiant and determined to return home to Rita and his grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) in East London, embarks on an adventure, only to find himself in immense peril, while a distraught Rita searches for her missing son,” per the official synopsis.

“Blitz” will screen at Middleburg as a co-presentation with the British Embassy. British Ambassador to the United States Dame Karen Pierce will introduce the feature, and also receive the Festival’s inaugural Film Diplomacy Award.

John Waters is lamenting how much fans of smart indie dramas are “fading” amid the modern adoration of IP.

Waters told The New Yorker, as part of a profile of his pal “Welcome to the Dollhouse” and “Happiness” director Todd Solondz, that Gen Z moviegoers would rather pay for Marvel films than arthouse features.

“Todd still has the fact that the intelligentsia likes his movies,” Waters said of Solondz’s filmography. “But I think, unfortunately, that audience is fading, because young people want to go see comic-book movies in a mall and have a riot after.”
