The closing ceremonies for the 31st Summer Olympics in Rio on NBC were an indication of just how exhausted everyone has become from the last 16 days. A mere two weeks have passed since Matt Lauer, Hoda Kotb, and Meredith Vieira set the stage for what would ultimately become a global demonstration of the Ugly American trope. In lieu of those three heavy-hitters, the closing ceremonies were hosted by Mary Carillo, Ryan Seacrest, and Mike Tirico finishing things the way they began–by complaining that Brazil thinks Alberto Santos-Dumont is the true father of aviation. “They’re not letting this go,...

And they’re off! After weeks of reports about trouble in Rio – from the threat of Zika virus to the very real problem of polluted water – the 2016 Summer Olympics got underway Friday night with an Opening Ceremony that underwhelmed – at least for American TV audiences. (Initial ratings were way down from the 2012 London Olympics.)
Nonetheless, the real drama and excitement is still to come over the next two weeks, as some of the world’s most decorated athletes look to add to their record tallies. As NBC’s Bob Costas recently told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour, “Obviously Michael Phelps is already the greatest swimmer in Olympic history. Usain Bolt is already the greatest sprinter in Olympic history, and they’re trying to add to what they already have done, so we’re talking about Mount Rushmore-type stuff.”

During its coverage of the Olympics’ opening ceremony Friday night, NBC aired an interview with two of the event’s co-directors, Brazilian filmmakers Fernando Meirelles (“City of God”) and Daniela Thomas (“Paris, je t’aime”)—though it’s unclear if anyone from the network was listening. Meirelles and Thomas explained the purpose behind the performance, which was to avoid the host nation’s usual navel-gazing (“talking about their belly buttons,” as Meirelles put it) in favor of global issues, connecting the history of Brazil to the specter of climate change.
Perhaps he meant that the navel-gazing would be reserved for NBC: With “Today Show” talent emceeing the spectacle at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium and Bob Costas plugging The Golf Channel from the main set, the telecast had the feeling of an especially expensive presentation at the Television Critics Association’s biannual get-together, laying on the salesmanship a little strong.

NBC aired Nancy & Tonya on Sunday, a documentary featuring interviews of ice skating stars Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding as they revisit Kerrigan’s attack 20-years later.
Nancy Kerrigan Attacked
In 1994, a man hired by Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gilloly, attacked Kerrigan off the ice during the World championships, hitting her knee with a metal pipe. Kerrigan recovered from her injury with rigorous rehab and was able to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics, winning silver.
The story soon took on a life of its own, with many speculating that Harding was behind the attack, though she claimed she had no part in it. Harding and Kerrigan competed side-by-side during the 1994 Olympics, but their relationship was strained and Harding failed to medal in women’s figure skating. Later she pled guilty to hindering prosecution and was forced to pay a fine of $160,000 and undergo three years’ probation. In addition, Harding was also eliminated from the U.

On Feb. 23, 1994, all eyes were on Lillehammer.
Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding were set to face off in the ladies' figure skating Olympic short skate, just six weeks after Kerrigan was clubbed in the knee at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in an attack orchestrated by Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly. The tape-delayed broadcast drew more than 70 million viewers and a 48.5 household rating — still the seventh highest-rated TV program in history.
The most memorable Winter Olympic moments of all time
Twenty years to the day on Sunday, the two will be back on an Olympic broadcast in NBC's one-hour documentary Nancy & Tonya (7/6c) to discuss the soap opera-like scandal that riveted America — and in Kerrigan's case, for the first time. "Everyone's talked about this except Nancy. Tonya can't stop talking about it! But Nancy wanted to do this. She was ready," Mary Carillo, who produced and narrates the documentary, tells TVGuide.

For days NBC Sports had been saying its Nancy & Tonya documentary would probably air on Sunday before the Sochi Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony, which also would sync it up with the 20th anniversary of the 1994 Winter Olympics Figure Skating Competition. But that slot depended on any weather delays or unforeseen problems during NBC’s coverage. This morning, the network nailed down a timeslot: this Sunday at 7 Pm Et/6 Pm Ct. Mary Carillo will examine the events that held Americans spellbound after defending U.S. figure skating champion Nancy Kerrigan was clubbed in the knee after a practice during the 1994 U.S. championships and rival Tonya Harding’s husband and bodyguard were arrested for planning the attack. The docu, which combines present-day and archival interviews, practice and competition footage, and news coverage leading up to and during the events, includes a sit-down with Kerrigan and a one-on-one with Harding. Nancy was brutally attacked before the 1994 Winter Olympics, by Tonya’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, and two of his accomplices. Now NBC and Espn are debuting rivaling documentaries that will force viewers to decide whose side they are on!

Taking on an exciting new role, Matt Lauer is filling in for fellow NBC-report Bob Costas during the network's Sochi Olympics coverage.
NBC made the announcement on Tuesday (February 11) after the seasoned sports reporter came down with a nasty eye infection, preventing him from performing his duties.
"Let's hope it's only tonight," Costas told Lauer live on Today this morning. "I'm walking around, I might as well be playing 'Marco Polo.' I have no idea where I am."
The temporary switch is pretty remarkable, considering Costas has been the go-to Olympics reporter since 1998 for both the Summer and Winter games.
But not to fear, Bob definitely has a sense of humor about the whole ordeal and shared a vodka toast with his correspondent Mary Carillo late last night and said, "I'm looking at it this way ... my eyes can't get any redder."...

“I don’t think she is going to be able to travel,” said NBC Olympics executive producer Jim Bell today of skier Lindsey Vonn joining the network’s coverage of the Winter Olympics next month in Sochi, Russia. However, Vonn could show up on NBC in some form or another, Bell said. “We have been in discussions,” he said of Vonn, who had to drop out of the Games due to a knee injury. When pressed whether she would be on-air, Bell stoically replied “maybe.” Bell also noted during a call with reporters today that he wasn’t worried that the absence of the high-profile Vonn — a gold medalist at the 2010 Vancouver Games and now a pop culture staple — would lead to a lack of viewer interest in U.S. participants. “There are plenty of established stars to go round, like Shaun White,” he said. “And there are always the unknowns.

There will be at least two documentaries about the Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan scandal at the 1994 Winter Olympics leading up to the 2014 Games in February.
Espn announced earlier in the week that its "30 for 30" series will feature a film called "Tonya and Nancy." Harding has been interviewed for it, but Espn Films vice president Connor Schell said that as of Wednesday (July 24), Kerrigan had not.
On Saturday, we found out why: Kerrigan will give an exclusive interview to NBC for its own documentary on the incident, in which Harding's then-husband and her bodyguard hired a man to injure Kerrigan shortly before the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.
The crime and revelation of Harding's involvement created a media storm that resulted in huge ratings for CBS' Olympics coverage. (Kerrigan recovered from the attack and won a silver medal; Harding finished eighth.)
