FX has canceled its drama series The Old Man after two seasons.

The series, starring Jeff Bridges as a retired CIA operative pressed back into action, performed well in its first season in 2022 and earned two Emmy nominations, for Bridges’ lead performance and cinematography.

Production on season two stopped during last year’s dual labor strikes, leading to a gap of more than two years between seasons – not unusual for a streaming series but hard to overcome for a show that originates on a linear channel, as The Old Man did on FX. The cancellation comes about eight weeks after season two aired its finale in late October.

FX declined comment.

The second — and now final — season is up for three Critics Choice Awards in January: best drama series, best actor in a drama for Bridges and best supporting actor in a drama for John Lithgow.

The series, based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Perry, starred Jeff Bridges as veteran and former CIA operative Dan Chase. Season 1 followed Chase after he killed a home intruder and went into hiding. The good news for fans of “The Night Agent,” Netflix’s conspiracy thriller that’s one of its most popular series of all time, is that it’s snagged an early Season 3 renewal months ahead of its Season 2 premiere, Netflix announced Tuesday, along with some first look photos of Season 3. The bad news is that the premiere has been pushed to 2025. On balance, more positive than negative, we’d say.

Season 2 was originally slated to premiere in 2024, but has been pushed to winter 2025. This will mean Season 2 premieres close to two years after Season 1 premiered in March 2023. But the gap between Seasons 2 and 3 is likely to be smaller, as work on Season 3 is already underway. Filming on the 10-episode third season is scheduled to start later this year in Istanbul and move to its home base in New York in 2025.

On Oct. 8, Netflix made the announcement everyone has been waiting for: The Night Agent season 2 will be released in winter 2025. Netflix has given an early Season 3 renewal to its hit actioner “The Night Agent,” in advance of the show’s second season return in Winter 2025. The series, from Sony Pictures Television, is set to begin a production unit in Istanbul at the end of the year, and then will turn its attention back to filming in New York in 2025.

The streamer announced the additional pickup while sharing first-look images for “The Night Agent” Season 2. Gabriel Basso stars in the series, which comes from creator Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) and is based on the novel by Matthew Quirk.

In Season 1, low-level FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Basso) helped save the U.S. President’s life, earning him the chance to become a Night Agent. Truncated by Bridges’ cancer diagnosis and recovery along with a bout of Covid, the first season of The Old Man concluded with three episodes less than originally intended. Still, the series presented two of our best acting talents, complemented by solid performances from Alia Shawkat and Amy Brenneman, as the series set up an even more exciting sophomore run.

According to THR, the synopsis for season 2 reads, “Season two of The Old Man will follow former CIA operative Dan Chase (Bridges) and ex-fbi assistant director Harold Harper (Lithgow) as they work to rescue Emily (Alia Shawkat) after she’s kidnapped in Afghanistan. Gbenga Akinnagbe, Navid Negahban and Jacqueline Antaramian will reprise their roles from the first season.”

“The Old Man” will be back soon with a new season. The FX drama will kick off Season 2 with a two-episode premiere on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 10/9c, the network announced Wednesday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

Season 2 consists of eight episodes, one more than Season 1. The remaining six episodes will air weekly. All episodes will stream the next day on Hulu.

FX also dropped a teaser for Season 2 — set to Soundgarden‘s “Black Hole Sun” with lots of helicopters and bullet holes — which will pick up after last season’s bombshell. The first season ended with the reveal that Angela Adams/Emily Chase (Alia Shawkat) is also Hamzad’s (Navid Negahban) daughter, Parwana. Season 2 finds Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and Harold Harper (John Lithgow) teaming up to rescue the woman they all claim as their daughter from Hamzad.

Two years and change after its first season ended, FX is putting The Old Man back to work.

The thriller starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow will begin its second season on Sept. 12, about 26 months after season one concluded in July 2022. The Old Man is one of four series FX will debut in September — the others are American Sports Story, the network’s latest anthology from Ryan Murphy; English Teacher, a comedy created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace); and docuseries Social Studies, from filmmaker Lauren Greenfield (The Queen of Versailles).

Additionally, FX will debut Lie to Fly, its latest New York Times Presents documentary, on Aug. 23.
