Gkids announced the acquisition of a pair of director Naoko Yamada's acclaimed films, 2016's A Silent Voice and 2018's Liz and the Blue Bird . In addition to the licensing news, Gkids revealed plans to bring A Silent Voice back to cinemas in North America this December. A Silent Voice will screen in North America on December 15 and 16, 2024. Japanese filmmaker Naoko Yamada is best known for directing the acclaimed anime A Silent Voice: The Movie, and her latest film, The Colors Within, debuted at the Annecy Film Festival to great reception. Directed by Yamada from an original screenplay by frequent collaborator Reiko Yoshida, The Colors Within follows a band of high schoolers fronted by a girl who can see colors in people’s hearts.

With only a few more weeks until T he Colors Within premieres in Japan, the upcoming Naoko Yamada-directed anime film released a brand new trailer today – though, it’s a little more on-beat for the creator who enjoys showcasing her characters goofing around and showing their personality through movement. Tsubasa Yamaguchi, who graduated from the Tokyo University of Arts, is the first-class author of the manga “The Blue Period”. Starting in June 2017, Kodansha serialized the manga in Monthly Afternoon magazine, and eventually it was printed by Kodansha Comics and released in Fall 2020. After winning the 13th Manga Taisho award (the “Cartoon Grand Prize”) in March of 2020 and the 44th Annual Kodansha Manga Award in May of the same year, a seinen anime adaptation was released in Japan by Netflix. The series' script is written by Reiko Yoshida, and Ippei Inoue composed the soundtrack. The twelve episodes, produced in the studios of Seven Arcs and running from the 2nd of October until the 18th of December of 2021, had Koji Masunari as chief director and Katsuya Asano, who directed the anime at Seven Arcs, while Tomoyuki Shitaya designed the characters.

Is redemption possible when looming over you are past actions that you bitterly regret? That is a question at the heart of A Silent Voice, an animated feature adapted from a manga series written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima. The story follows Shouya Ishida, who spent the sixth grade leading his class in bullying Shouko Nishimiya, a new classmate who is deaf. The class turns against Shouya when his actions result in Shouko transferring to another school, leaving him isolated and bullied.

The passing years leave Shouya with hatred over the person he was, driving the depressed teen to the point where he believes suicide is his only absolution. When he crosses paths with Shouko in middle school, Shouya wishes to atone for his awful actions, but wonders whether it is too late for that.

Japanese creator Naoko Yamada, whose latest film “The Colors Within” screened in the main competition at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, continues to challenge herself.

“Animation provides me with hope, yearning and challenges. It allows me to expand my imagination infinitely and, at the same time, it challenges me to see how much imagination I actually have,” she told Variety via an interpreter following the premiere of her latest.

“I want to see what I can do without limiting myself to any particular subjects.”

It introduces a young Totsuko, a closeted synesthete who can actually see others as colors. She becomes fascinated with honor student Kimi – and her dazzling shade, who has dropped out of school but pretends to attend for her grandmother’s sake.

Following the TV anime series and a short anime film produced by Toei Animation, a live-action film adaptation of Reiko Hiroshima's children fantasy novel series Fushigi Dagashiya Zenitendo is set to release in Japan on December 13, 2024. The short anime film was screened as a part of the omnibus film festival Toei Manga Matsuri in August 2020, then the TV anime series has aired on Nhk Educational TV since September of the year. Hideo Nakata , best known for the international success of his Ring horror film franchise, is attached to direct on a screenplay by Reiko Yoshida . Gkids, the Academy Award-winning producer and distributor announced a multi-territory acquisition of The Colors Within (Japanese title: Kiminoiro) which is directed by Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice), with production from studio Science Saru (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off).

The film will have its world premiere in competition at the 2024 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. US outfit Gkids has partnered with the UK’s Anime Ltd. to secure international rights to The Colors Within, the highly anticipated anime feature directed by Naoko Yamada.

It was revealed today that the upcoming feature will receive its world premiere in competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (June 9-15).

The plot of part 2 continues from the second part. However, as specified in the trailer, Dead Dead Demon’s DeDeDeDe Destruction’s anime adaptation will have an original ending.

A coming-of-age drama about artists, Blue Period has become one of the most popular seinen titles of the modern era. Written and illustrated by Tsubasa Yamaguchi, the manga has been published since 2017 and there are 15 collected volumes as of the time of writing. A 12-episode anime adaptation premiered in 2021 and was also a hit, although no official confirmation of a second season has been made since then. But, we do have other great news, as Warner Bros. Japan has just announced that a live-action Blue Period movie is premiering this year in Japanese cinemas.

The movie was announced just today in Japan, and Warner Bros. has confirmed that the movie will be released on August 9, 2024 in Japanese theaters. It is unknown whether the movie will have an international distribution or not.

After the massive critical and commercial success of “A Silent Voice” (2016), it seemed like director Naoko Yamada could do no wrong and was poised for huge things. It may have been strange for some then that her next directorial project would be tied to the “Sound! Euphonium” anime series, which Yamada had previously worked on as series unit director under Tatsuya Ishihara. It could almost be seen as a regression, as Yamada's first two features, “K-on! The Movie” (2011) and “Tamako Love Story” (2014), were also based on pre-existing anime series. Yet whether a fan of “Sound! Euphonium” or not, “Liz and the Blue Bird” (2018) is a constant delight and could well be Yamada's masterpiece.

Makoto Shinkai recently took to Twitter on March 14, 2024, to share his thoughts on the upcoming anime film adaptation of Inio Asano’s Dead Dead Demon’s De De De De Destruction following its preview screening.

Describing the film as “truly magnificent,” Shinkai expressed that while watching the movie, he was transported back to the same feelings of excitement, passion, determination, and talent that he experienced when the manga first debuted in Big Comic Spirits magazine back in 2014.

Moreover, Shinkai noted that the movie served as a reminder of the anxiety that has been deeply ingrained in everyone’s daily life ever since the earthquake, a sentiment that remains relevant even ten years later.
