Born in New York City, Edwin Lester founded the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera (LACLO) in 1938, serving as the company's General Director until his retirement in 1975. The LACLO offered annual subscription series of musicals and operettas, some of which were created at the LACLO and others which were brought directly from Broadway to Los Angeles. Several of the works that Lester commissioned for the LACLO went on to wide international success, including "Song of Norway" (1944), "Magdalena" (1948), "Kismet" (1953), "Peter Pan" (1954) and "Gigi" (1973).
