8 True Stories That Inspired Hollywood’s Greatest Biographical Drama
Image
Films have a magical ability to transport us across worlds and time when done right. While fictional tales have their own magic, some stories are so extraordinary, so deeply human, that they deserve to be told on the silver screen.

Such biographical dramas, rooted in real-life events, have the rare power to not only captivate and entertain but also to educate and inspire. These films peel away the layers of history and paint a picture of the triumphs, struggles, and complexities of some of the most remarkable individuals who helped shape the world and occasionally, and made it a better place.

From tales of heroism in the face of unimaginable horrors and adversities to stories of quiet resilience, Hollywood has no shortage of biographical dramas that resonate. Although there are times when the creative flair takes over and adds a bit of dramatic flourish to create a story worthy of cinematic appeal,...

Steven Spielberg’s event film rescheduled for June 2026 while The Daniels’ next film relinquishes its release date
Image
It’s time for a good old release date shakeup! Steven Spielberg‘s anticipated event film no longer opens in theaters on May 15, 2026. Instead, the lauded filmmaker’s mysterious new feature opens on June 12, 2026, taking over a spot previously reserved for Everything Everywhere All At Once Oscar-winning duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, also known as The Daniels.

According to The Daniels, their next movie is coming along nicely. Still, it needs more time in the oven, so let them cook. A new date for their latest project is forthcoming. In the meantime, cinephiles can look forward to learning more detail about the next outing from the filmmakers who brought us an Oscars dark horse and one of the most visually entrancing films of 2022.

With Steven Spielberg’s new film going on June 12, 2026, it shares its opening weekend with the Scary Movie reboot. Also opening around that time are Amazon...

Universal Shifts Untitled Steven Spielberg Event Film Away from ‘Avengers’ and ‘Mandalorian’ Movies
Image
Universal is shifting its untitled Steven Spielberg event film away from “Avengers: Doomsday” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and straight into the “Scary Movie” reboot’s territory. The untitled Spielberg movie was originally set for a May 15, 2026 theatrical release; the film will now wait nearly another month, releasing wide on Friday, June 12, 2026.

The shift is not all about Spielberg, IndieWire has learned. The June slot was previously occupied by another untiled Universal event film, that one directed by Daniels Kwan and Scheinert. The Daniels film is now undated, but a new release date will be announced shortly. It has a script, a person with knowledge of the situation told IndieWire, but needs a little more time. Internally, the Spielberg shift is being looked at as a win-win for both films.

It’s not like there is no competition set for Spielberg’s new date — it’s just now less of a crossover with potential movie-goers.

Begun, the Cola Wars have: Judd Apatow to direct Coke vs Pepsi movie with Steven Spielberg producing
Image
Deadline reports that Judd Apatow has been tapped to direct Cola Wars for Sony, who shelled out $1 million in April for the pitch. The film is based on the true story of “Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola” in the mid-1980s. Steven Spielberg is also on board and will produce the project through his Amblin Entertainment production company.

The Cola Wars brought us many memorable events, including the disastrous launch of New Coke and the Pepsi commercial that left Michael Jackson with severe burns. The film is billed as “the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender (Pepsi) vying for the No. 1 spot (Coca-Cola).” Jason Shuman (Acapulco) and Ben Queen (Cars 2) are penning the script for the project, and while it’s still in the early stages, it could be a fun flick.

First Man True Story: What The Movie Changed About Neil Armstrong
Image
First Man closely follows Neil Armstrong's life, highlighting his struggles and emotional journey. The movie is fairly accurate regarding the space race and Moon landing events but with a focus on Armstrong's experience. While the flag is shown on the Moon, First Man chooses not to depict the crew planting it, focusing instead on Armstrong's personal moment.

Damien Chazelle's First Man revolves around Neil Armstrong and his experience as an astronaut, including during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission to the Moon. Of course, since it's a movie, the 2018 biographical drama changed a few small details about Armstrong's life and the Moon landing. However, as it turns out, Chazelle and screenwriter Josh Singer still stayed relatively close to how the major events of Armstrong's life played out.

First Man was nominated for four Academy Awards Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects, winning in the last category.

Ryan Gosling's Oscar-Nominated Biopic Is Now Streaming On Netflix & Its Box Office Still Shocks Me

First Man, Ryan Gosling's biopic about Neil Armstrong's personal tragedy before the Apollo 11 mission, is now on Netflix, and it's not just a historical account; it's a deep character study. It was a surprising box office flop despite positive reviews. Controversy over its omission of the American flag may have deterred some viewers. First Man won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and it's a must-watch on Netflix for its breathtaking Moon landing sequence.

Ryan Goslings highly acclaimed Neil Armstrong biopic First Man is now streaming on Netflix, and I still cant believe it didnt do better at the box office when it came out in 2018. First Man reunited Gosling with director Damien Chazelle after theyd each scored the biggest hit of their respective careers with La La Land. It was supposed to be their next blockbuster success, bringing an old-school genre into the modern day. But...

Universal reserves May 2026 date for an untitled Steven Spielberg event film
Image
The iconic Steven Spielberg has been focusing more on human dramas as of late, except for the occasional special effects-laden vehicles like Ready Player One and The Bfg — even sitting out Indiana Jones for the first time with the last entry, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. However, Deadline has now revealed that Universal Pictures has reserved a release date for May 15, 2026, for what is being described as an “original event film” that has been created by and will be directed by Spielberg.

It is not revealed what the event film is. However, it was reported last month that Spielberg would reunite with frequent collaborator David Koepp for an original UFO movie that has been kept very secretive. The UFO movie is said to be based on Steven Spielberg’s own original idea and that David Koepp is writing the screenplay. Unfortunately, that would be all the information given at this point.

Steven Spielberg Sets Untitled Event Film at Universal for May 2026
Image
Universal Pictures has dated an “untitled event film” directed by Steven Spielberg for a wide release on Friday, May 15, 2026. The story will be by Spielberg and the screenplay by his frequent collaborator David Koepp. Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce.

While no further details were shared at present, Variety reported last month that Spielberg’s next project will “likely” be “a UFO film based on his own original idea” and written by Koepp. The May 2026 release is Spielberg’s original idea as written by Koepp, and a Spielberg UFO film would surely be an event film.

When reached by IndieWire, a spokesperson for Universal Pictures declined comment on the UFO detail.

Of course, most Spielberg films are event films, with many written by Koepp, including: “Jurassic Park,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” (a UFO film!), and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Combined, those...

Steven Spielberg is Going Back to His Et Roots With Next Aliens Project and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2 Might Have Been the Catalyst

Steven Spielberg is one maverick director among his contemporaries who has mastered every genre in the cinema handbook. The director has made intense thrillers, sci-fi dramas, historical/war epics, and comedies. Spielberg can do no wrong and as an ardent lover of cinema, he has no plans of slowing down.

Henry Thomas in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

His sci-fi flicks such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and A.I. Artificial Intelligence have been celebrated as some of the best entries in the genre. According to new reports, he is heading back to that genre yet again with his new film, and the recently released Dune: Part Two may have had a hand in Spielberg developing that itch.

Steven Spielberg developing new UFO movie to be written by Jurassic Park’s David Koepp
Image
It’s been a while since Steven Spielberg has dabbled in the world of extra-terrestrials, but according to a report from Variety, the acclaimed director is working on a UFO movie which will likely be his next project.

Sources told Variety that the UFO movie is based on Steven Spielberg’s own original idea and that David Koepp is writing the screenplay. Unfortunately, that’s all the information we have at this point, but a UFO movie from the man who gave us Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is hard to ignore. Koepp has penned a handful of Spielberg movies, including Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Additionally, American Fiction — based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett — is nominated for the WGA Award for best adapted screenplay.

The comedy, which stars Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright as a frustrated novelist who writes a satirical book under a pen name that exposes the publishing industry’s limited view of Black life, has garnered numerous awards in addition to the Oscar, including the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, a BAFTA award for best adapted screenplay and Film Independent Spirit Awards for best actor (Wright) and adapted screenplay. 2024 Oscars Winners List: ‘Oppenheimer’ Wins Most with 7, ‘Poor Things’ Second with 4
Image
Another Oscars season is over. The 96th Academy Awards have wrapped, and the full 2024 Oscars winners list has been revealed.

“Oppenheimer” had an air of inevitability about it unlike few Best Picture contenders in recent memory: IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted it would win seven Oscars tonight, including the top prize. And indeed it did, nabbing seven statuettes overall. But the triumphs for “Oppenheimer” at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards suggested it was the film to beat, by any standard.

“Oppenheimer” also received the most nominations overall, with 13. Its seven wins were for: Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Picture — the most of any film tonight. The next-most nominations was 11 for “Poor Things,” and then 10 for “Killers of the Flower Moon.

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Wins Oscar for Best Original Screenplay
Image
Crank up that steel drum cover of 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P”! “Anatomy of a Fall” has scored the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Director Justine Triet and her husband and co-writer Arthur Harari took the stage at the Dolby Theater on March 10 to accept the trophy.

In winning the award, Triet and Harari beat out several other Best Picture nominees to claim the top prize. Also nominated in the category were David Hemingson for “The Holdovers,” Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer for “Maestro,” and Celine Song for “Past Lives.” The sole non-Best Picture nominee recognized in the category was “May December,” which received its sole Oscar nomination for Samy Burch’s script.

The Original Screenplay Oscar is the latest award that Triet’s courtroom drama received during the past Awards season. Triet and Harari won in the same category at the British Academy Film Awards, the Golden Globes, and the French César Awards.

The Oscars: Oppenheimer dominates, and Emma Stone surprises; here are the winners!
Image
The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. Overall, it was the icing on the cake of a refreshingly entertaining edition of the Oscars – one of the best in years.

Right off the bat it was pretty amusing, Jimmy Kimmel made some pretty fun digs in his opening monologue, including some references to Robert Downey Jr’s checkered history (which he was happy to play along to) and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s genetic perfection (he ain’t wrong). Plus, there was a close-up of Anatomy of a Fall’s breakout dog star, Messi (who showed up despite earlier giving the award show the high hat...

Oscars 2024 Winners List: Oppenheimer Takes Best Picture, With Real Competition From Poor Things
Image
Another awards season comes to an end, as the 2024 Oscars named Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as Best Picture, beating out contenders like Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, and Poor Things. Nolan also won for directing, while Cillian Murphy beat out The Holdovers‘s Paul Giamatti for Lead Actor and Robert Downey Jr. received the win for Supporting Actor.

But Poor Things didn’t fare too badly, taking home four awards including a surprise win for Emma Stone, who was widely considered the underdog given Lily Gladstone’s heavily favored performance in Flower Moon. American Fiction also took home a well-deserved adapted screenplay nomination, while Anatomy of a Fall won for original screenplay.

Barbie didn’t go completely win-less, as Billie Eilish and Finneas won their second Oscar for “What Was I Made For?” (just after a jaw-dropping rendition of “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling and a whole...

2024 Oscar Nominations: ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Poor Things’ Lead This Year’s Picks
Image
My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.

“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...
