Just when you think you’ve sorted out who’s fighting whom, the plot has already high-jumped into a whole new dimension. And speaking of high jumps, let’s discuss Kraven the Hunter—a character whose incoming spotlight just might shift the sands in the superhero universe.
The buzz around the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film, directed by J. C. Chandor, has fans feeling like kids in a candy store. Finally, Kraven is set to claw his way into the limelight! Although he’s no stranger to the stage (think cartoons and video games), it’s hard not to reminisce about how this wild ride could have started with a different ticket—straight out of Black Panther.

Fun fact: Once upon a time, Ryan Coogler wanted Kraven the Hunter to be one of the main antagonists of Black Panther, intending to recreate a famously intense showdown between T’Challa and Kraven from Christopher Priest’s comics run in the 1990s for the 2018 blockbuster. The only thing that stopped him was the fact that Sony held the rights.
Considering that this is the man who managed to turn a third-stringer like Namor into a violent revolutionary rebuke of colonization, it’s easy to imagine what Coogler might’ve done with Kraven as a supernaturally dangerous, unhinged poacher in Africa. And it would have been easy to do it during J.C. Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter: a shapeless, rudderless, unimaginative bore that fumbles the ball with every single conceivable aspect of the character.
There’s one thing that soars in the film, and it’s Russell Crowe as Kraven’s abusive overlord father,...

Stephen Amell garnered widespread acclaim for portraying Oliver Queen aka Arrow in the CW series, Arrow. Although his superhero role comes under the DC banner, he recently voiced his frustration over how the Arrowverse is being treated in comparison with the broader DC Extended Universe (Dceu).

As Marvel True Believers will tell you, writer Al Ewing’s style is a fascinating synthesis of six different comics traditions. After all the trials and misses, Marvel Cinematic Universe might finally be heading in the right direction, bringing back Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool to the big screen with one of the most anticipated Marvel releases since Avengers: Endgame.
Wolverine’s return to the MCU means a lot, not only for the franchise but for Hugh Jackman as well. Everything is going how it actually should. But years back, the Australian star had prepared a contingency plan if things wouldn’t go as he wanted them to, with none other than Christian Bale.

Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige tends to fall between the stage boards when it comes to the director’s oeuvre. It’s not as blockbuster as his Batman trilogy or as critically acclaimed as Oppenheimer (which sold so well on Blu-ray it led to a major studio shortage) but it no doubt stands as one of his finest achievements: narratively, technically and, yes, magically. And it took years to get to the screen. Distracted and delayed off and on since the days of Memento, The Prestige would end up a feat that stands alone–ironically enough when you think about it…–in Christopher Nolan’s filmography.
But this is just the Pledge. So how did Christopher Nolan turn The Prestige into a minor masterpiece? How did he pull the rabbit out of the hat? Let’s find out: Wtf Happened to this movie?!

With all the chatter about the 2022 movies that are already well on their way to Oscar night, it’s time to shine one last spotlight on Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical epic “The Woman King.” Released last September, the movie stars Oscar winner Viola Davis in another unforgettable role as Nanisca, the general of the Agojie, an all-woman army protecting the African kingdom of Dahomey during the 1800s.
If that idea sounds familiar, that’s because the Agojie were the inspiration for “Black Panther” comic book writer Christopher Priest to create the Dora Milaje, Wakanda’s woman army that would play a huge role in both 2018’s “Black Panther” and 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Despite the similarities, “The Woman King” is a very different movie, based more on historical knowledge of the Agojie while telling an original story about Nanisca and the Agojie’s newest young recruit, Nawi, as played by Thuso Mbedu.

Christopher Nolan always seems to have a confident vision for each movie he makes. His signature style is in part defined by his self-assuredness when delving into a new project. Whether it's the finely-tuned narrative of films like "The Prestige" or the clearly defined styles of Nolan's Batman movies, the British visionary always seems to have a solid and well-thought-out idea behind each of his projects.
With "Oppenheimer" set for a 2023 release, Nolan once again looks to be preparing a singular vision using both black and white and color footage. His drama about the Father of the Atomic Bomb will be led by longtime collaborator Cillian Murphy with a supporting cast that includes Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Gary Oldman, Matt Damon, Kenneth Branagh, Michael Caine, and Rami Malek. And that's just to name a few.

Though he's known for making meticulously-planned and intricately plotted films, Christopher Nolan never writes a movie with a cast in mind. Preferring to build out the character before thinking about casting, the celebrated director takes his story and its characters seriously enough to allow them to become fully formed without imposing any limits. And it was no different with his 2006 period thriller "The Prestige."
A tale of two dueling 19th Century magicians, the movie was an adaptation of Christopher Priest's novel of the same name. Nolan and his brother, Jonathan, took the liberty of rearranging the story significantly to make its three acts mirror the three stages of the magicians' tricks: the pledge, the turn, and, of course, the prestige. The result was a clever and effective fantasy thriller that made for a refreshing change of tone between Nolan's blockbuster "Batman Begins" in 2005 and "The Dark Knight" in 2008.

Comic book movies and comic books exist in an infinite reciprocation loop. Fans of Ryan Coogler's ecstatic "Black Panther" or epically mournful "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" can turn to Marvel for more in-print stories. Marvel and its stable of A-list writing and illustration talent will continue spinning tales about T'Challa, Shuri, Namor, and more. With "Wakanda Forever" making more than 300 million worldwide in its first weekend of release, there is little chance this loop breaks anytime soon.
If the Marvel complex exhausts you, that status quo might be instantly tiring. Yet, the "Black Panther" comics canon is comprised of incredible offerings from some of the most compelling writers and thinkers of color from the 20th and 21st centuries. To deep dive, is to encounter the authors of "Between the World and Me" and "Bad Feminism." There are offerings from a Hollywood director and the first black writer-editor in mainstream comics.

Dwayne Johnson is finally joining the Dceu with Black Adam. The movie’s trailers (not to mention the movie itself) showcase a brutally action-packed epic, the character isn’t one of DC’s most well known, despite having been around for over 75 years. Black Adam is truly the most complex (and violent) character to spring from the Shazam mythos and has been the center of some of DC’s best tales of the past 20 years. He has become one of DC’s greatest anti-heroes, a godlike being of profound honor and with an immense capacity for violence.
But what makes Black Adam so tough, and why is one of the biggest action stars of a generation so eager to play him? That’s because he shares that magic word of Shazam and it makes him a formidable character with a cool set of powers and abilities.

“Only the most broken people can be great leaders,” Namor (Tenoch Huerta) intones in the latest trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While the first trailer for Ryan Coogler’s highly-anticipated sequel conveyed a message of grief as the central characters mourned the death of King T’Challa, reflecting audiences’ continued grief over the loss of Chadwick Boseman, the latest trailer puts a greater focus on the film’s narrative. It even hints at the inclusion of a key Marvel villain that hasn’t been announced.
Although there is still a somber tone, one that I suspect will permeate the film as a means to permit collective grieving over Boseman, this trailer is a confirmation that the death of T’Challa will not make the world smaller. Sony Pictures’ “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, is now playing in theaters, and much like past historical actioners like “Braveheart” or “Gladiator,” those who venture out to see the film will likely be wondering how much of it is rooted in fact.
John Boyega, Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Adrienne Warren and others star alongside Davis in the story of West African women warriors who take no husbands and serve in their positions for a lifetime to protect their nation.
Davis’ character is based on a real life historic figure named General Nanisca, and in the film she trains new recruits alongside Izogie (Lynch) and Amenza (Atim). Headstrong new recruit Nawi (Mbedu) and her peers Fumbe (Masali Baduza) and Ode (Adrienne Warren) challenge their elder superiors with new battle tactics, thoughts and principles.

If you read Gold Derby’s September box office preview, you already know that there are indeed movies being released this month, but not to expect too much from many of them. Even so, there are a few films that should keep moviegoers happy until the next superhero flick, hopefully. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This week’s biggest and widest release is Sony’s “The Woman King,” starring Oscar winner Viola Davis as Nanisca, the titular ruler of the Kingdom of Dahomey, a powerful African state during the 18th and 19th centuries that fought back slaves and rival tribes alike. Sony is releasing the movie into 3,500 theaters, with lots of room at the multiplexes for a unique style of historic war epic.
“The Woman King” teams Davis with filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood, and it offers something for Black women, who have been deeply underserved in recent months.

Exclusive: Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s G-Unit Film & Television has optioned Christopher Priest’s DC comic Xerø for development alongside Color Farm Media as a live-action film with an eye on a franchise.
Based on Priest and ChrisCross’s DC Comics series, the film follows a Black government assassin who weaponizes invisibility by disguising himself as a white man to blend anonymously into the exotic Casino Royale haunts of the international elite. A review of this week’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, “The Whole World Is Watching,” coming up just as soon as I pull an El Chapo…
Two-thirds of the way through its run, Falcon and the Winter Soldier remains competent and little more. It’s a show in which lots of things happen in each episode, yet the individual episodes feel sluggish, because those various incidents don’t do much beyond inching the plot forward. And it’s a show that has never really solved the problem of...

This article contains The Falcon and the Winter Soldier spoilers.
We knew Bucky Barnes spent a lot of unexamined time in Wakanda after the events of Captain America: Civil War. And we certainly expected it to be mentioned in Marvel’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier to some degree. Even still, it was a pretty massive surprise when, at the end of the third episode of the new Disney+ Marvel streamer, Bucky finds a trail of Kimoyo beads leading him to Wakandan bigwig Ayo, a major guest appearance from a Black Panther character.
But why is Ayo here? Why does she care about what’s going on with Bucky, Sam, Zemo and the super soldier serum? We don’t know yet, but it’s a safe bet she’s there to kill Baron Zemo.
Ayo from Black Panther
Florence Kasumba’s Ayo is second in command of the Dora Milaje.

Comic books aren’t required reading for fans of Marvel movies and TV shows, but they are a great way to dive that much deeper into the origin stories of the superheroes permeating the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Now that “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” has officially premiered on Disney+, the timing is perfect to catch up on some of the comic books revolving around the dynamic duo. The series’ pilot finds Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) embarking on a new adventure, in the midst of dealing with some personal issues. The six-episode series, which debuted on March 19, is directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer.

Color Farm Media has signed with APA for representation. Established in 2017 by Erika Alexander, who is best known for 90s hit sitcom Living Single, and media/tech entrepreneur Ben Arnon, the multi-platform content company is behind the recently released crucially acclaimed documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble, which chronicles the brave life of the late iconic activist and Congressman.
Color Farm’s upcoming project slate includes Rise and Shine: The Boys Choir of Harlem, the true story of Walter Turnbull, a young Black opera singer from Mississippi who overcame extreme prejudice, and his own inner demons, to create a world-class boys choir in Harlem. Rachel Goldberg is attached to direct.
Also in the pipeline is Xerø, a scripted, live-action television series based on a DC Comics series created by Christopher Priest, who was the first Black writer and editor at Marvel where he reinvented the Black Panther character, as well as Fat,...

It’s somehow almost 2021, which means the DC Universe is about to enter its Future State, the big two month crossover that kicks off the new year by pausing its regular line, and diving deep into the wild, varied timelines and parallel universes for new angles from fresh creators. And we are happy to have your exclusive first look at the February covers and solicitations for the Justice League family of books.
Since half the fun of solicits is trying to piece together what’s happening in the book from the 50 words and a cover, we decided to engage in some wild, semi-informed speculation on what might be coming from DC’s event.
Let’s get right to it: Future State has a very strong Seven Soldiers of Victory vibe.
The original Seven Soldiers were briefly a superteam from the ’40s, brought back sporadically whenever a comic needed a nostalgia boost,...

Just in time for this Sunday’s premiere of “Batwoman” on The CW, we’ve compiled a list of other memorable and bad-ass superheroines. From “Wonder Woman” to “Captain Marvel,” here are some super-women you don’t want to mess with.
Wonder Woman
Whether you met her first in DC Comics, played by Linda Carter in the 1970s, or played by Gal Gadot in Patty Jenkin’s 2017 hit film, if you know only one name on this list, chances are it’s this one. Created in 1941 by William Moulton Marston and H.G. Peter, Wonder Woman is the immortal, super-strong, magical genius daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta. After moving to the world of mortals as an emissary of the Amazons, she fights for justice and equality solo and as a founding member of the Justice League against a rogues list that includes literal gods and colorful criminals like Cheetah. DC’s Milestone revival kicked off at FanDome earlier this month, with the promise of new and old material returning the beloved characters to comics. And at the second stage of FanDome, they followed through, with the release of Milestone Returns #0, free to read only during the digital convention. Now, they’re fulfilling another stage of that promise: Hardware and Icon are being published digitally for the first time ever.
This week saw the release of Hardware: The Man in the Machine, the first volume of Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan and J.J. Birch’s origin/revenge tale about genius inventor Curt Metcalf, on ComiXology and other digital platforms. And over the next two weeks, the first two volumes of Icon (A Hero’s Welcome and The Mothership Connection), from M.D. Bright and McDuffie, will go on sale online as well.

Following runs on Marvel’s Black Panther, DC’s Deathstroke and Justice League, and Dynamite’s Vampirella, veteran comic book writer Christopher Priest is teaming up with Heavy Metal for an upcoming standalone science fiction series titled Entropy.
The publisher describes the project as the story of Henry Hanks, a “likable, average everyman who will become responsible for destroying the world,” under the influence of Kako, a seemingly unstoppable chaotic force that exists throughout the multiverse — a force that he swears to destroy, no matter the cost.
No artist for the series has been announced.

I’m not entirely sure why, but DC have always been far better than Marvel with anthology books. Possibly because of their extended history, that they just have that much more material than Marvel had, and could make extra money by packaging old, sorry ‘classic’, reprints with the odd new story or framing sequences. The recent run of DC anniversary issues have also seen them put out some rather good 100 page anthologies, but now with all new material, though with very definite nods towards source material of the past. Which brings us to this ‘Guidebook’. Odd title in a way, as it’s appeared too far down the line into the event to be a guide for anything, but it’s certainly a good opportunity to fill in gaps in the main book, and to give short, sweet glimpses at some of the peripheral characters.

Jc Chandor is being eyed to develop and direct “Kraven the Hunter” a “Spider-Man” spin-off movie based on the iconic villain for Sony Pictures, according to an individual with knowledge of the project. Another individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap that Chandor’s deal is far from finalized.
The project is being billed as the next chapter of Sony’s universe of Marvel-licensed characters. “The Equalizer” screenwriter Richard Wenk is writing the script. Palak Patel is overseeing for Sony. Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad are producing. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote the screenplay.
Born into Russian aristocracy, Sergei Kravinoff a.k.a. Kraven the Hunter is an obsessive big-game hunter who was introduced as a Spider-Man villain in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #15 (1964). According to Fandom, Kravinoff began his career using the typical tools of the hunter but over time he developed a preference to take down large animals with his bare hands.

Slade Wilson has a complicated family life. He’s the premier assassin in the DC Universe, with super powers and a big beefy sword and a butler with wit sharper than Slade’s sword. He’s would seem to be the ideal Batman foil, but instead he’s the primary villain of the Teen Titans, and especially Robins in all their varying incarnations. And most of that rivalry comes from Slade’s dysfunctional family, which you can get a glimpse of in this exclusive clip from the upcoming DC animated feature, Deathstroke: Knights and Dragons.
The movie looks to be a little bit about Deathstroke’s origin story, and a lot about his messed up relationship with Adeline, his ex-wife; and his kids, Grant, Rose and Joseph. By their superhero names, the kids are Ravager, Ravager, and Jericho.
This clip pits Rose, in full H.I.V.E. armor and in the H.

Slade Wilson is coming off of the best run of comic stories in the character’s history, and now he’s getting some space in the DC Animated Movie line to shine. Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons was announced as the latest entry in the feature series, with a release date of August 4th, 2020.
Deathstroke was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez in 1980 as a major antagonist for the Teen Titans, and he eventually evolved into the top assassin in the DC universe. We knew Dark Nights: Death Metal, the big DC megaevent from Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion and Fco Plascencia, was reworked when it got delayed. DC just announced how much it was reworked.
The main series has been expanded from six to seven issues, with a skip month planned for September. However, to help fill us up for that break, we get two supplemental comics: Dark Nights: Death Metal Guidebook #1 on August 11th, and Dark Nights: Death Metal Legends of the Dark Knights #1 on August 25th.
Death Metal is the follow up to Dark Nights: Metal, the series that introduced the Dark Multiverse and its evil coterie of Batmen (including the Batman Who Laughs) to the Dcu; to Snyder’s Justice League, which brought dark goddess Perpetua in from her prison in the Source Wall, to tear down the existing multiverse and replace it with something more pliable; and to Hell Arisen,...

Christopher Priest talks Deathstroke, storytelling, and where he's leaving his hit DC comic.
Christopher Priest is one of the best comic writers of all time. His career spans almost 40 years now, and in that time he's had his hands on just about every big name superhero character out there - Captain America, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Justice League. You name it and he's probably written it. His most famous work is probably his defining run on Black Panther, a run that greatly informed the tone of the ultra-popular cinematic take.
So when DC announced he was coming back to comics, we were understandably excited. When they said it was for Deathstroke, we were puzzled for a second, and very quickly overjoyed. The tricky thing about assembling a milestone issue is that it must satisfy both casual fans and Wednesday Warriors. In other words, not only must it pay tribute to a character’s rich history, but it must also stay true to said icon’s contemporary sensibilities and, hopefully, inspire everyone who’s laid down their hard-earned money to keep reading whenever the next installment hits stands.
Seeing as how DC did a fine job of pulling off this balancing act one year ago with Action Comics #1000, they’re now following suit with Detective Comics #1000. As it turns out, the decades-old title hits quadruple digits during the very year Batman celebrates his 80th anniversary. And believe me, you won’t find many better love letters to the Dark Knight than this baby.

Batman turns 80 this year. We talked to Kevin Conroy, Bruce Timm, Scott Snyder, and more about the hero's legacy!
It all began with two shots in the dark, pearls spilling onto the blood-soaked cement. No, it all started when the bat crashed through the window. Actually, it was when the boy fell into the cave. Maybe it was that hostile takeover at Apex Chemicals? Dozens of stories have shaped the legend of the Batman over his 80-year history, tales that have made the Caped Crusader arguably the most iconic character in comic book history, rivaled only by Superman.
When Bill Finger and Bob Kane put pen and pencil to paper for 1939's Detective Comics #27, they had no way of knowing that they were creating a new American myth that would captivate readers and movie audiences for decades to come. They certainly didn't expect their first Batman adventure,...

Esai Morales Will Play Slade Wilson, better known as Deathstroke in Titans Season 2 on DC Universe.
There's been something of a dearth of Deathstroke on our TV screens recently. Despite being one of DC's most enduring anti-heroes, currently the star of one of the best monthly books in DC Comics' schedule (written by the great Christopher Priest), and his status as perhaps the single greatest villain in the history of the Arrow TV series (where he was masterfully portrayed by Manu Bennett), Slade Wilson has been suspiciously absent from live action appearances. Sure, he made a dramatic post credits appearance in Justice League (where he was played by Joe Manganiello) and there is talk of ol' Slade getting a movie of his own, but things have been awfully quiet on all those fronts until recently.

Detective Comics #1000 will feature a who's who of legendary Batman creators. Here are the details...
Batman didn't tie the knot last summer, but he still has plenty to celebrate in 2019. In May, the Caped Crusader turns 80 after his debut in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. And there's another milestone: Detective Comics, one of the books that formed the backbone of the publisher we know today as DC Comics, is hitting its 1,000th issue in March. To mark the occasion, DC is publishing an extra-sized issue featuring many of the great creators who have worked on the Dark Knight over the years.
The issue will feature a story from the current Detective Comics creative team of Peter J. Tomasi and Doug Mahnke that will introduce a new version of the Arkham Knight, the villain from the Batman: Arkham Knight video game, to the comics. The issue will also feature a...

Producer/directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo ("Avengers: Infinity War") continue developing Valiant Comics' 1997 title, "Quantum and Woody", created by Christopher Priest and Gabriel Ferrari, as a live-action series, based on a pilot script written by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari ("Ant-Man and the Wasp"):

If you partook in the incredible celebration surrounding Action Comics #1000 earlier this year and hoped for Batman to receive similar treatment when he hits a similar milestone, well, then today’s the day we can guarantee your wish being granted.
You see, DC Comics have finally released the first details concerning Detective Comics #1000, and it looks like something none of us will want to miss. In fact, the landmark issue will introduce a new version of the Arkham Knight, thus bringing the familiar name into proper continuity.
As you may remember, the eponymous antagonist was first introduced in Rocksteady’s hit video game Batman: Arkham Knight, where he was ultimately unmasked as being Jason Todd. But considering how Jason’s well-established as the Red Hood within the DC Universe, it makes sense for someone else to be under the mask this time around.
Right now, I imagine that’ll go...
