The Story: After causing a deadly accident while driving drunk, a family man (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is sent to a maximum security penitentiary. There, he’s recruited by the Aryan Brotherhood, and coerced into acts of violence that threaten to erase any trace of the man he once was.
The Players: Starring: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Omari Hardwick, Lake Bell, Jon Bernthal, Emory Cohen & Jeffrey Donovan. Written and directed by Ric Roman Waugh.
The History: Shot Caller was released with very little fanfare last summer. A low-key VOD release from Saban, which nonetheless received some pretty good reviews when it played the festival circuit, it forms a loose trilogy for director Ric Roman Waugh, following his earlier Felon and Snitch. Originally a Relativity production, that company’s bankruptcy sent the finished film into a tailspin, hence the limited release. Given how VOD numbers are rarely revealed, it’s impossible to know how the film did financially,...

Stars: Aaron Pierre, Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, David Denman, Emory Cohen, Steve Zissis, Daniel H. Chung, Dana Lee | Written and Directed by Jeremy Saulnier
It has been a while since Jeremy Saulnier gifted audiences with a film. After the one-two punch of 2013’s tense Blue Ruin and 2015’s masterful Green Room, Saulnier was solidified as a director worth watching. Since then, he has made 2018’s Hold the Dark, and worked on season 3 of True Detective. With Rebel Ridge, the writer/director has delivered another work that shows why he remains one of the most exciting filmmakers working today.
The story opens with the sight of Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre), a former Marine, cycling into the town of Shelby Springs. With Metallica blaring in his earbuds, this prominent character is shown to be singularly focused as he rides into town with $36,000 in cash, money intended to post bail for his cousin...

Jeremy Saulnier's latest movie, "Rebel Ridge," just debuted on Netflix — and critics are loving the newest project from the director of "Green Room."
According to FlixPatrol, the movie — which Saulnier wrote and edited as well — has been the most-watched Netflix film in the U.S. since it hit the streamer on September 6, 2024. It also has a pretty astounding Rotten Tomatoes rating of 95% (as of this writing). With Aaron Pierre in the lead role of Marine veteran Terry Richmond — a role that was originally played by "Star Wars" veteran John Boyega until the actor departed due to family commitments — the movie has a pretty impressive cast, with James Cromwell, Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, David Denman, and Emory Cohen flanking Pierre.
So, what is "Rebel Ridge" about? As the movie begins, Pierre's Terry is heading to post bail for his cousin Mike (C.J. LeBlanc) and plans to buy a truck afterwards...

Director Jeremy Saulnier’s gritty action thriller Rebel Ridge brilliantly balances the intensity of its grounded spectacle with an intimate, emotionally charged undertone, and part of the credit for this perfect assimilation goes to the compelling performance by the cast and memorable characterization. Not only the lead roles played by veteran actors who are ever reliable in their craft, but even the minor characters played by relatively new performers with minimal screen time made a lasting impact in the movie despite having mostly conventional parts, which goes on to prove not only the deftness of script but also proper casting as well.

Blue Ruin and Green Room writer/director Jeremy Saulnier opts not to complete his own three-colour trilogy with Rebel Ridge (‘Red Ridge’ was right there), instead saddling this engaging 21st century riff on First Blood with a banal title that doesn’t do it justice. For Saulnier, though, it must be quite a relief just to get this Netflix project out the door, after the 2020 production was waylaid first by Covid and then by the sudden departure of original star John Boyega. Happily, Aaron Pierre proves a more than capable replacement, shrugging into the skin of a former Marine and enthusiastic cyclist who finds himself firmly at odds with a small-town police department.
After being rammed off his bike by a patrol car for cycling while Black in the Louisiana town of Shelby Springs, Richmond (Pierre) is subjected to a legal if ethically dubious search and seizure, which sees the...

Many movies have been made about soldiers whose skill set proves out of step once they re-enter the civilian world. Some of them treat those differences with empathy and insight; but more often than not, they leverage them for explosive, empty action sequences. “Rebel Ridge” mostly falls perfunctorily in the latter category.
Written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier (“Green Room”), the film’s focus on a Black soldier adds degrees of complexity to the conflicts that erupt between him and local law enforcement in a small, mostly white town. But if racial politics (cinematic and otherwise) prompt Saulnier to treat him marginally more thoughtfully than most movie veterans, the filmmaker’s obligations to genre formula end up overshadowing those differences by the time the last empty, explosive action sequence has unfolded.

Plot: A former marine (Aaron Pierre) takes on the corrupt police force of a small town.
Review: Jeremy Saulnier has always struck me as a talent to watch. From his small-scale debut, Blue Ruin, to his genre breakthrough, Green Room, he’s always had a talent for mixing bone-crunching violence with a surprising amount of soulfulness. While I thought his last film, Hold The Dark, was a mixed bag, it had one incredible shoot-out about mid-way through the movie that made me think that Saulnier, should he ever go that route, would make one heck of a legit action film.
Lucky for us, he went that route.
Rebel Ridge is probably Saulnier’s most conventional and accessible film to date, but it also ranks as one of the most entertaining films Netflix, which is dropping the film this week, has made in some time. Gorgeously shot and featuring a breakout...

Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge is a race thriller that, up to a point, is as effective as they come. A Black man, Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre), is racing down a Louisiana backroad on his bike, Iron Maiden’s “The Number of the Beast” blasting on his headphones. From there, he’s promptly rear-ended and thrown off his bike by a cop car in pursuit, held up at gunpoint, and thrown against the car by two officers. For some 15 minutes, we’re simply bearing witness to the kind of traffic stop that’s gotten so many Black people killed, and Saulnier twists the knife by expertly modulating the tension between the cops clearly looking for any reason to bust out the weaponry and Terry refusing to capitulate to his clear harassment.
Violence doesn’t ignite here, thanks to Terry unbelievably maintaining a cool head, but the traffic stop still ends...

Heads up, folks: One of the best trailers of 2024 has just dropped.
Jeremy Saulnier, the writer/director behind films like "Green Room" and "Blue Ruin," has returned with "Rebel Ridge," a movie about a guy who is trying to bail his cousin out of jail, but whose life savings is unjustly taken from him by small-town police officers who seem to operate with impunity. After calmly explaining his case and trying to get his money back, the man takes things into his own hands -- and that's when the cops realize they've made a huge mistake: The dude they're harassing used to be a Marine, and he has no intention of meekly putting his tail between his legs and slinking away from this situation. Quite the opposite, actually: The guy becomes a one-man wrecking crew hellbent on justice, and he's going to make them regret ever messing with him in the first place.

But when Terry’s life’s savings is unjustly seized by law-enforcement, he’s forced to go head to head with local police chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson) and his combat-ready officers. Terry finds an unlikely ally in court clerk Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb) and the two become ensnared in a deep-rooted conspiracy within the remote township.

Jeremy Saulnier, the plainspoken American auteur behind “Green Room,” “Blue Ruin” and “Hold the Dark,” has been toiling away for the past few years on a new movie for Netflix called “Rebel Ridge.” Now, that movie is finally here. And there’s even a new trailer, which you can watch below.
In the film Terry (Aaron Pierre from “The Underground Railroad”) attempts to bail his cousin out of jail, when he runs afoul of some morally questionable smalltown cops. What starts off as a minor infraction soon balloons, with Terry having to take matters into his own hands and bring down a systemically corrupt police chief (a snarling Don Johnson) and maybe whole chunks of the Shelby Springs government. His only ally is a young attorney (AnnaSophia Robb), who soon finds herself in over her head as well. As the trailer suggests, Saulnier will deliver the bone-crunching suspense set pieces he is so good at,...

Coming our way from director Jeremy Saulnier, whose previous credits include Murder Party, Blue Ruin, Green Room, Hold the Dark, and episodes of True Detective season 3, the thriller Rebel Ridge was announced back in 2019… but we haven’t seen it yet, because the project was slowed down by the pandemic lockdowns, then by the departure of lead actor John Boyega a few weeks into filming, reportedly due to “family reasons.” With Aaron Pierre (M. Night Shyamalan’s Old) taking over the lead role, Rebel Ridge did make it through production on the third attempt. It wrapped in the summer of 2022, had a positive test screening, and is finally ready to make its way out into the world. Netflix has announced a September 6th premiere date for the film, and along with that announcement comes the unveiling of several first look images, which can be seen in this article.

Jeff Nichols’ newest film, The Bikeriders, has some true elements to it. Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Norman Reedus, Boyd Holbrook, Toby Wallace and more have finally hit the big screen after a new distribution deal and release date postponed the movie’s release in 2023. St. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate Irish culture, history, and of course, to have a bit of fun! To those unfamiliar, March 17th marks the traditional death date of St. Patrick (Ireland’s patron saint). It used to be a religious day to remember him and how Christianity spread in Ireland.

The day is celebrated beyond Ireland as a way to embrace Irish culture. This day offers people a chance to enjoy traditional music, dancing, food, and drinks. Also, wearing green is a big part of it since it’s linked with Ireland.

New Regency’s Jeff Nichols-directed crime drama The Bikeriders is getting shopped to rival studios and streamers after the movie stepped off its Dec. 1 theatrical release date, Deadline has confirmed.
New Regency has a deal at 20th Century Studios/Disney, which was originally set to release the movie. 20th Century Studios/Disney had Gareth Edwards’ brilliant sci-fi action movie The Creator starring John David Washington and that $80M production didn’t do well earlier this fall, released during the actors strike and grossing $40.7M stateside, $104M WW. Tracing the evolution of a fictional motorbike gang known as the Vandals, writer-director Jeff Nichols’s The Bikeriders takes its inspiration from a photobook of the same name by influential mid-20th-century photographer Danny Lyon. A major contributor to the “new realism” photography movement, Lyon lived alongside his leather-clad petrolhead subjects for months at a time, helping him create urgent, spontaneous images of their outlaw lifestyle that oozed authenticity. Unfortunately, those latter qualities are in short supply in the film, but the sheer exuberance of the story and the stylistic brio of Nichols’s direction often compensate.
The Bikeriders is narrated by Kathy (Jodie Comer), the girlfriend of fiercely committed young Vandals member Benny (Austin Butler). She relays the idiosyncrasies and transgressions of the gang from a slight remove as it evolves from a blue-collar fraternity and surrogate family to a nihilistic crime syndicate. As endearing as Kathy’s disapproving bemusement can be,...

Director Jeff Nichols’ clear admiration for the work of photojournalist Danny Lyon and his 1968 book The Bikeriders that chronicles the lives of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, is evident in a new drama of the same name about a fictitious motorcycle gang called the Vandals. Nichols has teamed up once more with long-time collaborator and cinematographer Adam Stone to recreate the film-grainy look and feel of 1965’s Chicago by bringing Lyon’s black-and-white photos into full, colourful and vibrant life.
Katy (Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer with a thick and rather amusing northwestern dialect that casts doubt on her casting) is the battle-worn and cynical narrator of the film, as she explains to the Danny Lyon character in the film (played by Mike Faist) how she first got into the gang, married the most eligible bikerider, Danny, and eventually found herself forced into a ‘love triangle’ for Danny’s affections...

Directed by Sean McEwen, American Outlaws is based on the real-life events of a bank robbery and other associated felonies committed by three siblings, Dylan, Lee-Grace, and Ryan Dougherty. Starring Emory Cohen, Sam Strike, and India Eisley in the lead roles, the film is based on the 2012 case of the Dougherty siblings, who took the police on an 8-day chase after committing a string of felonies. The movie dramatizes certain incidents, but, in the end, it’s a deeper look into the hollow façade of the ‘American’ way of life, where the poor are always treated as second-class citizens, leading to children growing up with a lot of anger and issues in their hearts. Here’s everything that happens in the 2023 action thriller American Outlaws.

Some films merely offer you a clockwork plot. Others, like Jeff Nichols’ smokin’ cool “The Bikeriders,” whisk you away with a roar of mood and atmosphere.
That’s no surprise coming from the versatile director of “Mud,” “Loving” and “Midnight Special,” all seemingly different (but equally wondrous) films with one common denominator: a precise, wistful sense of place and tone. As soon as we spot Austin Butler on a bar stool sporting a badass Vandals Chicago jacket on his back, that exacting disposition is evident here, too. With appealingly greased and molded hair, Butler looks like he just stepped away from the “Elvis” set for a swift cigarette break, wearing the invincible aura of a movie star like it’s his second skin. Based on Danny Lyon’s 1968 book of black-and white photographs, “The Bikeriders” follows a fictional Midwestern biker gang in 1965 Chicago called the Vandals. Austin Butler stars as Benny, a quietly smoldering young man who, like elder gang member and founder Johnny (Hardy), is unconditionally devoted to the club. Jodie Comer stars as Kathy, Benny’s wife who fell for him at a young age and grapples with the consequences of Benny’s involvement in the group. Using photographer Danny Lyon’s iconic The Bikeriders’ imagery as a jumping-off point, Jeff Nichols’ latest feature imagines a fictionalized Chicago motorcycle club, the Vandals. Motorcycle club culture might be a distinctly American phenomenon, but Nichols casts two Brits in the lead, with varying returns: Jodie Comer as Kathy narrates the story in a clear Goodfellas conceit, adopting a Midwest accent flashy (and divisive) enough to ensure sustained awards-season chatter; Tom Hardy is Johnny, a truck driver who gets the idea to start a motorcycle club while watching Marlon Brando’s The Wild One. This low-stakes “why not?” starting point for founding the club works early in the film, until, following the Goodfellas trajectory, it all comes crashing down. Without Thelma Schoonmaker’s editing prowess, The Bikeriders’ rise-and-fall narrative ultimately plays too conventional.

Nichols hails from the Heartland and has a better handle on the life and attitudes one finds in so-called flyover country than nearly all the directors working at his level. You’ve probably seen a few of his films, most of which take place down dirt roads in rural areas. Movies like “Shotgun Stories,” “Loving” and “Mud.”
With “The Bikeriders,” Nichols brings us into the big city — or the outskirts, at least — and then zeroes in on a social microcosm all of us recognize, but few have penetrated: a Chicago-area motorcycle club that calls itself the Vandals. The Vandals don’t really exist,...
