With one week before the Academy Awards, "Birdman" continues its triumphant march towards Oscar glory. Just this past weekend, the Alejandro González Iñárritu contender won the top awards at the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) awards, the 62nd Sound Editors' Golden Reel, and the 51st Cinema Audio Society. The film also took home the Best Contemporary Hair Styling award from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild.

Well, if you depend on the guilds and societies to help you predict your Oscar ballots the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) and Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild handed out their awards last night adding a little fuel to the fire. I think most people have American Sniper taking the Sound Mixing award at the Oscars, but if you want to go the way of the Cas you'll be putting Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) on that top line. Sound mixers Thomas Varga, Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montano, Gustavo Borner, Jason Oliver and John Sanacore took home the Cas Award for best live action sound editing while the animated award went to the team behind Big Hero 6 -- Gabriel Guy, David Fluhr, Alan Meyerson and Mary Jo Lang. Capping off a busy night for awards in the run-up to the 87th annual Oscars, the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) awarded the sound mixing team of "Birdman" top honors Saturday night. "Sherlock," "Game of Thrones" and "Modern Family" won in the TV categories. Clint Eastwood's war film "American Sniper" is considered the favorite to win the comparable Best Sound Mixing Oscar, though "Birdman" was nominated by the Academy's sound branch as well and, indeed, could be formidable if it is the industry favorite the guild awards have suggested it is so far. "Whiplash," also Oscar-nominated, won the BAFTA prize. "Interstellar" and "Unbroken" are also up for the Academy Award, each of them nominated by Cas as well. The Cinema Audio Society (Cas) announces the nominees for the 51st Annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2014 in six categories and the Cas Technical Achievement Award Nominations. Final balloting for both the Outstanding Sound Mixing and the Cas Technical Achievement Awards will open online Wednesday January 21st and end Friday, February 6th.

The Awards will be presented at a sealed envelope dinner on February 14th in the Crystal Ballroom of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. During the awards the highest honor of the Cas . the Cas Career Achievement Award will be presented to Production Sound Mixer David Macmillan, Cas. Doug McIntyre, host of Kabc Talk Radio.s McIntyre in the Morning, will be returning as the Master of Ceremonies

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.

“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. Complaints about the sound mix on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” clearly didn’t have much influence on the members of the Cinema Audio Society, who on Tuesday made the film one of the five nominees for the best feature-film sound mix of 2014.

“Interstellar” joined “American Sniper,” “Birdman,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Unbroken” in receiving nominations for the 2014 Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing, which will be presented on Feb. 14 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

Chicago – The Tyler Perry empire rolls on, with a new show called “For Better or Worse” premiering November 25th on TBS. The series is based on two films Perry produced, “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Why Did I Get Married Too?” and focuses on characters played in both films by Tasha Smith and Michael Jai White.

Smith and White were in Chicago recently to promote “For Better or Worse,” in which they play Marcus and Angela, a married couple going through the process of interrelating. They are joined in the series by friends going through their various stages of relationships. It is described by Tyler Perry as a drama/comedy that will focus on the ups and downs of marital bliss.

Daniel MacPherson has revealed that dieting for his role in The Cup was "hard". The 31-year-old Australian actor, who played the late jockey Jason Oliver in the racing film, said that he existed on "black coffee" while trying to lose weight before filming started. MacPherson told National Features: "The first month was pretty hard, but after that I was just living on black coffee and exercise." He admitted that he drove to a McDonalds on the last day of filming, but said that he could not binge on "junk food" because it made him feel sick. He added: "I started dieting in February and we didn't wrap until August; I was hanging by my fingernails by August." It’s lucky 13 for the Boston Underground Film Festival as they celebrate their raucous 13th annual edition this year. Opening with the much buzzed about bloody feature film Hobo With a Shotgun starring Rutger Hauer and directed by Jason Eisener, the fest then barrels on for eight wild nights and days from March 24-31.

While there’s plenty of underground goodness from the U.S.A., this year Buff feels like it’s a much more international affair with several sick features from around the globe. There’s gory horror and quirky black comedy from Japan in the guise of Yoshihiro Nishimura’s Helldriver and Sion Sono’s Cold Fish; the Argentinian freak-out Phase7 by Nicolas Goldbart; David Blyth’s Wound is a psychological thriller from New Zealand; and Mark Hartley’s Machete Maidens Unleashed! is a look at Philippine exploitation cinema from the ’70s.

Director Simon Wincer is about to start production of his new horseracing film The Cup, but he admits that the project has been particularly difficult to put together.

“I’m glad that we’re up and running, because it’s certainly tried my patience a number of times,” Wincer told Encore.

The Cup tells the story of Damien Oliver, winner of the 2002 Melbourne Cup with the horse Media Puzzle. Oliver’s brother was killed in a horse racing accident in Perth, one week before the event.

Wincer and Eric O’Keefe started working on this project in 2003, and it’s taken seven years to make it happen. The $17.5m film was financed in 2008, but fell apart due to the global financial crisis.

Win some, lose some. That’s what The Cup has experienced in its long journey.
