Released in theaters in March, following its premiere at SXSW, Mohan’s Immaculate follows Cecilia (Sweeney), a woman of devout faith who is offered a fulfilling new role at an illustrious Italian convent. Her warm welcome to the picture-perfect Italian countryside is soon interrupted as it becomes clearer to Cecilia that her new home harbors some dark and horrifying secrets.
The film was critically acclaimed, if only a modest success at the box office, at a gross exceeding $28 million. Mohan directed from a script by Andrew Lobel.
Prior to Immaculate, Mohan collaborated with Sweeney on The Voyeurs, an erotic thriller for Prime Video, which also starred Justice Smith, Ben Hardy, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo. She also appeared on his teen comedy-drama series Everything Sucks!,...

After working together on the one-season Netflix series Everything Sucks! and Prime Video erotic-thriller The Voyeurs, Immaculate sees the reunion of director Michael Mohan and producer/star Sydney Sweeney for a project that is being released into cinemas. Arriving at a remote Italian convent, the devout Sister Cecilia (Sweeney) intends to fulfil a new role tending to dying nuns. As the virginal sister discovers that she is pregnant, it becomes clear that dark secrets are being kept at this gorgeous countryside location.
It is well documented that, after auditioning for this role in 2014, Sweeney used her star power to revive this project and keep the throughline which initially attracted her, even while revising the script. Thank goodness that the Anyone But You...

A lot of movies (and TV shows) are too damn dark these days. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat down to watch something made in recent years to end up gradually getting frustrated that I can barely see anything on the screen. Usually, it seems intentional, like directors want you to struggle to see the image for some reason. It was jarring when we saw how dark Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem was, but now that seems to be normal. But the overwhelming darkness isn’t always intentional – for example, director Michael Mohan has taken to social media to let viewers know that his psychological horror film Immaculate (you can read our review Here) was not meant to be as dark as it is on most streaming services.

Sydney Sweeney is an up-and-coming young actor who has taken the world by storm because of her brilliant talent. The American actress has been acting from a young age and she has been around the industry for a long time. She has been doing small roles in many big movies but got her big break because of shows like Everything Sucks! and Sharp Objects, but her stardom reached a new level after her HBO series Euphoria came out.
Sweeney has also enjoyed a healthy film career and has her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films which recently produced the psychological horror film Immaculate while she did technically appear in a Marvel film known as Madame Web, let’s ignore that film as best we can. In his review of the new horror film Immaculate (you can read it Here), JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray said the movie – which reunites Sydney Sweeney with Michael Mohan, who directed her in the erotic thriller The Voyeurs and the Netflix series Everything Sucks! – is “a decent throwback to Dario Argento-style Italian horror movies.” During a recent post-screening Q&a at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Boston Seaport, Mohan also revealed that one particular scene in the movie was inspired by the work one of my favorite grindhouse era filmmakers, Jack Hill – and that same scene also had to be salvaged with the help of Saw X director Kevin Greutert!

If you’ve been praying to the genre movie gods for a pregnant final girl to wreak bloody havoc in the last act of a horror movie, “Immaculate” has answered you.
While the first hour or so of director Michael Mohan’s “Immaculate” is laden with familiar jump scares and ominous Catholic portent, all hell breaks loose in the last act. Sister Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), who embraced religious piety after surviving nearly drowning in a frozen lake as a young girl, is the new nun in town at an exclusive Roman convent that doubles as a hospice care center for dying nuns in their last days. Despite coming to the convent a virgin, Cecilia is stunned to discover she’s pregnant.

Sydney Sweeney is one of the rising stars in Hollywood. Although she began acting at an early age with guest roles in TV shows like Pretty Little Liars and Grey’s Anatomy, she did not gain recognition until she starred in the 2018 comedy-drama TV series Everything Sucks! Fast forward to 2019, she had the world’s attention with her breakout role as Cassie Howard in the HBO series Euphoria.
Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard in Euphoria
Needless to say, Euphoria, the fourth most-watched show in the history of HBO, exposed the artists to greater opportunities in the industry. Sweeney is one of the breakout talents from this show. While she has starred in some great projects over the years, she decided to take the steering into her own hands for her most recent project, Immaculate. In a recent interview, she revealed the real reason why she chose to work as a producer on the movie.

Immaculate Review: Sydney Sweeney Is A Stellar Scream Queen In Weakly Written Religious Horror Story
Immaculate's bold choices in lighting and music build a tense atmosphere. Sydney Sweeney delivers a strong performance as Sister Cecilia. A lacking script and silly twists hinder Immaculate's potential for greatness.
Rising Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney has had a recent stint of success and exposure in big-name films. From her box office success in the hit romantic comedy Anyone But You, to her dabble in the superhero genre with the critically panned Madame Web, Sweeney has proven her acting range in such diverse projects. Now, she’s returning to the horror genre with Immaculate, her second collaboration with director Michael Mohan, to tell the story of how one woman’s devout faith leads to an unspeakably evil turn of events for her planned life of peace.

Sydney Sweeney recently played the character of Julia Cornwall in Sony Pictures’ Madame Web alongside Dakota Johnson. Her other release alongside Glen Powell; Anyone but You did slightly better than the former despite opening to mixed responses. Sweeney and Powell’s chemistry was highly appreciated by the audience and has been the talk of the industry ever since they started filming.
Sweeney has also showcased her exceptional work while portraying Cassie Howard on HBO’s Euphoria and appearing in the first season of the critically acclaimed anthology series The White Lotus. She earned Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her work on both series. The actress is now gearing up for the release of her psychological horror movie Immaculate in which she not only stars but also serves as the producer. In a recent interview, Sweeney talked about the actress she would like to work with next.

Thank goodness that the Anyone But You star...

To say that modern human society has issues with organized religion is an understatement. Make no mistake: faith is a beautiful and often necessary component of living, if only to help ease the burdens that are foisted upon every one of us on a daily basis. There can be such great comfort in believing that there's a divine presence in the universe, whether it's something that makes everything happen for an unfathomable reason or whether it's something that is perhaps testing us, putting all of us through our moral paces before we perhaps receive peace in the afterlife.
However, there's no denying that these beautiful and healthy aspects of religion have been woefully corrupted by eons of human weakness, frailty, bigotry, misogyny, and much else. As many people these days rightfully point out, a number of the current tenets of American Catholicism and...

Immaculate is a horror movie with an R-rating due to graphic violence and disturbing content. Immaculate is Sydney Sweeney's scariest movie yet, surpassing her previous horror roles. Immaculate is not suitable for children, as it deals with mature themes and violent scenes.
Sydney Sweeney stars in the horror movie Immaculate, which might be too much for some viewers due to its R-rating. Sydney Sweeney is currently at the peak of her career thanks to her roles in some of the most popular projects in recent years, both on TV and the big screen. Sweeney’s acting career began in 2009 in the zombie comedy film Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction and a minor appearance in the TV series Heroes and Criminal Minds, but she rose to fame with her role as Cassie Howard in HBO’s Euphoria.

Sydney Sweeney sets a new high with the religious-themed film Immaculate, scoring highest on Rotten Tomatoes at 71%. Sweeney's collaboration with director Michael Mohan sets Immaculate above previous horror films, promising heightened success. Immaculate follows Sweeney's recent box office flop Madame Web with a superior performance compared to her past horror movies.
Sydney Sweeney's new movie Immaculate has garnered enough critical praise to break her current horror genre trend. After starring in the romantic comedy and surprise box office hit Anyone But You, Sweeney will appear in a completely different film in terms of genre, tone, and fear factor that can be described as a religious-themed horror. Immaculate is directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel.

It doesn’t take a theologist to see that “Immaculate” director Michael Mohan probably grew up a devout Catholic.
His new horror movie stars Sydney Sweeney as a flung-from-innocence novice nun who arrives at a Roman convent bubbling with religious fealty — only to become the vessel for an immaculate conception gone horrifically wrong. Taking advantage of the film’s on-location shoot, Mohan, who previously directed the “Euphoria” and “Anyone but You” breakout in his erotic thriller “The Voyeurs,” steeps the shocker in religious iconography that veers from the saintly to the satanic.
“I grew up super devout Catholic,” Mohan told IndieWire. And “every Catholic person has guilt and trauma.” That’s for sure, as the Neon release mashes references to Ken Russell’s “The Devils,” Roman Polanski’s “Rosemary’s Baby,” and even Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!” in charting Sister Cecilia’s (Sweeney) psychological undoing in the process of being emblemized...

Sydney Sweeney’s had a huge 2024 so far — and her most startling act of the year is still ahead.
In the early weeks of the year, her Sony Pictures romantic comedy with Glen Powell, “Anyone But You,” showed remarkable staying power at the box office, eventually building from a tepid early result amid holiday competition to over $200 million at the global box office on the strength of word-of-mouth. Sweeney’s Fifty-Fifty Films shingle produced the film, as well as the upcoming “Immaculate,” which is to be released by Neon on March 22.
In “Immaculate,” Sweeney plays Cecilia, an American nun who arrives at an Italian convent, hoping to find safety and solace. The seeming miracle of her shortly thereafter becoming pregnant — a 21st-century answer to the Virgin Mary — quickly turns sinister, as Cecilia’s body and her faith both rapidly turn against her.

From eighth billing to bankable leading lady, Immaculate director Michael Mohan has played a key role in Sydney Sweeney’s rise to superstar status.
In 2017, Mohan helped cast Sweeney in the ‘90s coming-of-age series, Everything Sucks!, and while she was only billed eighth in the closing credits, her character played an integral part in the show’s central coming-out story. Mohan was certainly impressed by the Washington native’s acting ability, but it was her extracurricular efforts that indicated she was bound for great things, as she spent her downtime learning the ins and outs of production. Unfortunately, in April 2018, despite a passionate fanbase, Everything Sucks! became one of Netflix’s first of many more heartbreaking cancellations. However, within a matter of months, it opened the door for Sweeney to join the cast of HBO’s eventual hit, Euphoria.

Sydney Sweeney has had a busy few months as she rises to new levels of stardom. After the mammoth success of her romantic comedy with Top Gun: Maverick’s Glenn Powell called Anyone But You, the actress starred in the meme-bank Sony film Madame Web. The actress is now gearing up for the release of her first production, the horror film Immaculate.
Sweeney reportedly first came across the script for the film when she auditioned for it way before her fame. Though the project did not take off, the script of the film reportedly kept spinning her head, and when she got the chance to produce her own film, she decided to contact the screenwriter. While there were some changes from the original script, Sweeney mentioned that her performance in one particular scene in the film was the result of her reaction to a real-life incident.

When season two of Euphoria was airing in early 2022, social media was filled with memes of Sydney Sweeney’s terrified expressions in the show, as the internet declared the star needed to be put in a horror movie as soon as possible. It turns out she was already working on it, in the form of her latest film, Immaculate.
“I already had the script so I was really excited to see everybody’s reactions to Euphoria season two and everybody being like, ‘A horror film! Give us a horror film!'” Sweeney told The Hollywood Reporter at the movie’s Los Angeles premiere at Beyond Fest on Friday. “I was like, ‘Just you wait! I have something in store for you.’ I held onto it for a long time.”
A long time is an understatement, as she initially auditioned for the project a decade ago, but the movie was never made.

Sydney Sweeney’s second collaboration with director Michael Mohan, Immaculate, recently premiered at the SXSW Festival. Horror film fans are in for a treat as this film is filled with its share of blood and gore. During the filming of one of the particularly ‘bloody’ scenes, Sweeney suffered an ocular injury from fake blood flowing into her eyes. The Euphoria actress pulled off a Leonardo DiCaprio move and continued filming the scene with her hurt eyes.

DiCaprio set the precedence for this acting commitment in his movie Django Unchained with Quentin Tarantino, where he ignored a bleeding hand to perform an intense scene. Also serving as the producer of the film, Sweeney could’ve felt the extra pressure to deliver on her role.

The film comes to movie theaters nationwide on March 22, 2024, and Neon has put together a unique piece of promo marketing this week. They got Sydney Sweeney and co-star Simona Tabasco to play “Fuck, Marry, Kill”… and all the choices are horror movie villains!
“Fuck, Marry, Kill: Horror Edition” features icons like Leatherface, Chucky, Hannibal Lecter, Pinhead, and Michael Myers. Who would Sydney Sweeney kill? Ghostface and Pinhead, for starters. Sydney Sweeney endures all kinds of religious and bodily horrors in director Michael Mohan’s “Immaculate” — and that included a real ocular injury on set.
Speaking to IndieWire, Mohan said that while shooting the last take for the nun horror movie out from Neon March 22, Sweeney got fake blood in her eye in one of the film’s gnarliest scenes. Theatrical blood typically includes ingredients like corn syrup, red food coloring, and even cocoa powder — in other words, stuff you’d never want to get in your eyes.
“We wanted to do everything practically,” said Mohan, whose film stars “Euphoria” and “Anyone but You” breakout as Sister Cecilia, the new nun at a Roman convent who becomes the vessel for an immaculate conception she ultimately rebels against in a bloody final twist we won’t spoil here. But let’s just say you’ve never seen a pregnant final girl quite like this before.

In director Michael Mohan’s Immaculate, evil lies not in the efforts of Satan and his demons but solely within the hearts of the men running a convent in the Italian countryside and, to a lesser degree, the women who answer directly to them. In the opening scene, we witness a terrified young nun (Simona Tabasco) desperately trying to escape the convent, only to be hunted down and restrained by a creepy quartet of red-masked nuns. From this point on, it’s abundantly clear that something is off at Our Lady of Sorrows, even if it takes a young American nun, Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), who’s freshly arrived at the convent, quite a while to figure out that serious trouble is brewing in this little corner of paradise.

In the new horror movie Immaculate, Sydney Sweeney plays a devout nun named Cecilia, who, after learning that she is somehow with child, is pursued by both the manipulative clergy inside her convent in Italy and servants of darkness. But before she became the young blonde prey in this “nunsploitation” flick, Sweeney was the one doing the chasing.
Sweeney first heard of Immaculate many years ago, when she was just 16 years old. “I auditioned for it, was obsessed with it, and didn’t get it,” she tells Den of Geek while promoting the film at SXSW 2024. “And then I found out that they never made it. And every year, I followed up with my team asking, ‘Did they ever make that movie Immaculate? Whatever happened to it? Who booked it?’ And when I got older and I realized I wanted to make it myself, I went after the script.”

Ever since resurrecting the erotic thriller with the respectably lurid 2021 drama “The Voyeurs,” it was clear Sydney Sweeney and director Michael Mohan were interested in second comings. So it was only a matter of time before they’d turn their attention to Christ himself in “Immaculate,” an enjoyable if uneven horror film cut from a slightly different cloth than its religious brethren with a captivating turn from its star as a virginal nun whose pregnancy inspires questions beyond the health of the child, and a hell of an ending.
Refreshingly free of the pseudo-theology that usually bogs down films set inside the church, “Immaculate” simply suggests that My Lady of Sorrows is no place for a young woman. When the police stop the young woman on her way to the convent in the Italian countryside, they wonder why such a person would choose to become a nun. As they rummage through her luggage — a search conducted because she has no return ticket — they ask, in English, if joining a convent was a difficult choice. The woman scans their faces in confusion before responding: “I don’t see it as a decision,” she says with bitter force.

In the realm of religious horror, one filled with tales of divine terror, Immaculate emerges as the latest contender. Yet despite its promising setup within the shadowy confines of an Italian nunnery and a cast led by Sydney Sweeney, the film struggles to carve out a niche for itself. Directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel, the movie treads familiar ground, recycling familiar elements without delivering the novel twists, deeper insights or genuine horror in a genre that thrives on the exploration of faith’s darker dimensions.
The opening scene grips the audience with a woman’s desperate attempt to escape from a nunnery, only to be thwarted and mysteriously buried alive. The story then shifts to Sister Cecilia (Sweeney), a novitiate embarking on her spiritual journey at the nunnery, undeterred by skepticism at customs and cautionary advice from Sister Mary (Simona Tabasco) about her vows. The story then shifts to Sister Cecilia (Sweeney), a novitiate embarking on her spiritual journey at the nunnery, undeterred by skepticism at customs and cautionary advice from Sister Mary (Simona Tabasco) about her vows. Her encounter...

Religious horror is one of the most effective horror subgenres. No matter what religion a movie is exploring, the very idea of faith being turned into a nightmare you can’t escape from is inherently ready for some thought-provoking ideas, imagery, and scares. “Immaculate,” the new nun horror movie starring and produced by Sydney Sweeney, fails to stand out among other religious horror movies, relying instead on cheap and uninspired jump scares, and marred by pacing issues and a superficial exploration of what makes Catholicism scary. It never provides a cohesive narrative to support the genuinely interesting and bonkers ending to this Italian convent nightmare.
It’s not like the idea of horrors inside a convent isn’t already a prime setting for scares. An isolated place where only women reside, but controlled by men, belonging to an institution with a millennia-long history of abuse, is ripe for horror. This...

A horror movie set in an Italian convent with a title like Immaculate communicates all there is to know about the plot. A young American nun, Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), travels to her new post in the remote countryside, only to discover she’s miraculously pregnant soon after taking her vows. Director Michael Mohan and screenwriter Andrew Lobel pack in the Italian horror influences, with Suspiria largely presiding over this religious horror entry and blasphemous imagery in spades. But the film’s breakneck plotting, inert jump scare overreliance, and familiar tropes undermine a fierce performance by its lead.
Despite the stunning, labyrinthine, and ornate halls of the sprawling convent, the cast of characters in Immaculate is rather small. The sweet fish-out-of-water Sister Cecilia instantly bonds with Father Sal (Álvaro Morte) and the feisty Sister Gwen (Benedetta Porcaroli) yet draws angry stares from Sister Mary (Simona Tabasco). Toss in a few eccentric or stern Church elders,...

Last month, the Motion Picture Association ratings board announced that they had given the psychological horror film Immaculate, which reunites Sydney Sweeney with Michael Mohan, who directed her in the erotic thriller The Voyeurs and the Netflix series Everything Sucks!, an R rating for strong and bloody violent content, grisly images, nudity and some language. Now, in an interview with Variety, Mohan has promised that the film gets extreme, just like that rating explanation indicated.
Scripted by Andrew Lobel, Immaculate sees Sweeney taking on the role of Cecilia, a woman of devout faith who is offered a fulfilling new role at an illustrious Italian convent. Her warm welcome to the picture-perfect Italian countryside is soon interrupted as it becomes clearer to Cecilia that her new home harbors some dark and horrifying secrets.
Simona Tabasco (The White Lotus), Alvaro Morte (Money Heist), Benedetta Porcaroli (Baby), and Dora Romano (The Hand of God...
