[This story contains spoilers for “La Locker Room Aux Folles,” the ninth episode of Ted Lasso season three.]
After several nearly hour-long installments, Ted Lasso comes in at a comparatively lean 44 minutes for “La Locker Room Aux Folles,” which despite its title and the opening and closing tunes on the soundtrack, is definitely not a farce about an elaborate attempt by anyone at Richmond to hide their true nature.
It does, however, bring some resolution to Colin’s (Billy Harris) coming out story and takes a big step in positioning Roy (Brett Goldstein) to become Richmond’s next manager if Ted (Jason Sudeikis) ends up heading back to Kansas at season’s end (and, of course, the even larger if of Apple TV+ continuing its biggest show even if its title character isn’t there anymore).
Written by Chuck Hayward — who, Harris noted to THR, has had a key role in shaping Colin’s story this season — and directed by Erica Dunton, “La Locker...

A feelgood narrative sits somewhat awkwardly alongside a topical yet disappointingly tepid story of race on campus
Before it was even released, there was swift pushback to the Netflix acquisition Step Sisters. Despite a formidable production team behind it that includes Dear White People writer Chuck Hayward and Master of None’s Lena Waithe, the premise struck the Twitter commentariat as trite and conservative: Jamilah, a college senior hoping to gain admission to Harvard Law School, is asked by a professor to rehabilitate a group of disgraced white sorority sisters by teaching them how to step, a style of percussive dance that has its roots in African foot dancing and black sorority life. If she can pull it off, and impart upon them lessons of unity and sisterhood, the sorority will be readmitted to campus (they were punished because a sister was caught having sex on school grounds) and Jamilah...

“Intense.” It’s easily the one word to describe “Chapter V” of Justin Simien’s Netflix series, Dear White People.
“It was intense, bro,” says Barry Jenkins, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Moonlight, who stepped in to direct the episode, which is a largely satirical take on racial tension at a predominately white Ivy League-type campus told through the eyes of black students upended when campus security is called to a party and pulls a gun on a black student named Reggie (Marque Richardson).
The scene comes near the end of an episode that sees Reggie, a student activist, and his friends journey (via several enjoyable walk-and-talks) through campus from one event to the next before arriving at a party where he and a white student (Nolan Funk) get into a racially charged confrontation over singing the N word along to a Future song. As tensions...
