Mick Taylor is back to his tourist-killing ways in Wolf Creek 2 and, with the movie hitting Us VOD services next week, we caught up with John Jarratt for the latest segment in our Q&A series. In this feature, John Jarratt talks about who inspired his portrayal of Mick Taylor, what he’s working on next, and he shares one of his favorite on-set moments from Wolf Creek 2:

In both Wolf Creek films you do a wonderful job of balancing between a kind, happy-go-lucky guy and a menacing, maniacal guy. How do you prepare for a character like Mick? How do you find that balance?

John Jarratt: The happy go lucky guy is an impersonation of my father who was a fun loving outback, knock about, guy. Just add menacing and maniacal and you’ve made Mick.

Greg Mclean returns to direct the sequel to his 2005 cult horror starring John Jarratt as homicidal bushman Mick Taylor who preys on backpackers in the Australian Outback.

Jarratt is back in the role and stars alongside Shannon Ashlyn, Ryan Corr, and Phillipe Klaus.

Mclean and Aaron Sterns co-wrote the screenplay and produced with Helen Leake and Steve Topic. Wolf Creek 2 is scheduled for a 2014 release.

Screen Australia says it has not mismanaged its finances by spending its annual production funding in just six months - a state of affairs which it says reflects the strength of the local film industry.

The government screen agency revealed in mid-December 2012 that it had spent its entire annual $42 million drama production allocation due to the unprecedented number of quality feature film and television projects seeking support. The shock announcement was reminiscent of the agency's abrupt decision to cut its investment cap in 2009 while several films were mid-financed. That decision.threw several major Australian productions into dissaray including The Tree and the biggest box office hit of.2010, Tomorrow When the War Began (Omnilab Media had to increase its investment at the last minute to ensure production).

Overspending on such a scale has never occurred before, even going back to the era of Screen Australia.s predecessor funding arm, the Film Finance Corporation.

Directed by Greg Mclean, written by Mclean and Aaron Sterns, and produced by Helen Leake (Swerve, Black and White, Heavens Burning), Greg Mclean, and Steve Topic (Crawlspace), the sequel starts production seven years after the original Wolf Creek hit screens internationally.

The sequel to Australia’s highest grossing R-rated film ever has started production in South Australia after long delays.

Wolf Creek 2 has begun principal photography, again helmed by writer-director-producer Greg Mclean.

It will be a welcome relief to Mclean after the film struggled to get off the ground due to financing issues. In 2011 private investor Geoffrey Edelsten agreed to $5m investment but was later accused of failing to honour his commitment.

In a counter-suit, Edelsten claimed he was misled into being the major private investor.

The film was back on track by September but Edelsten has not returned as an investor in the project.

However the film does see the return of notorious pig hunter Mick Taylor played by John Jarrett, currently seen in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.
